Fergus Hill showed up at the doorstep of his equally graduated teammate Helene
Juste and pounded on it without regard for the hour (late, or possibly early) and the
presence of possibly sleeping people in adjoining apartments. As soon as she opened
the door, he said, "Is the arenamaster here? Or the Chardinee?"
"That is no business of yours," Helene answered. She leaned on the door, trying
to force it shut again.
Fergus leaned on it from his side, keeping it open. "I have to talk to one of
them NOW," he said. "Maybe the Chardinee would be best, but listen! I've discovered
a foul plot to keep Bombette here on Kaltos--"
"Jealous women on the Isle?" Helene asked skeptically.
"No, of course not! Well, some, but they aren't the real stumbling block. It's
HERE, right here on Kaltos--it's--" He paused and looked around the hallway. There
were three other doors on this bit of hall, and all of them were open about a quarter
of an inch, with an avid glitter at eye height. "I can't talk about it out here,"
Fergus muttered, scowling. "Let me in, Helene."
"And have the rumor-mongers claim that I'm entertaining strange men in my
apartment? As if!"
A man's hand came around Helene from the rear, pulling her out of the way. "Let
him in," Arenamaster Troktai said. "We won't get any peace until he's got this off
his chest."

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly JHELUM games. FUZZ BALL caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested VETERAN MERCENARY and was awarded 14
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, WALLY put down FLY
BALL, causing him to lose 3 points of recognition in the process. Although LEONIDAS
made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious FOOS
BALL. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the
whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in JHELUM these days is F BALLS. At least, most blades in town are
looking to avoid them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard
pressed to find any of DUDES last week. Busy avoiding F BALLS? Mighty fighters
cannot but expect competition from those below. SOD take warning! You have more
than a few enemies in JHELUM. At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on
TINIETON. It has got the courage it takes. Witness its challenge this turn against
PETE MASTIFF! To be sure the battle was a losing one. But I like to think TINIETON
at least gave PETE MASTIFF a run for his money.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. ROSE must hold silent, for this week he
was humbled in the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by STAN of DUDES. Hail STAN
for thy victory! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing
is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

PERSONAL ADS
Arnold -- Dude, you are reckless beyond permission. I don't actually want to kill
you, but it would be so easy! Use a little caution and forethought. -- Joseph
Fly Ball -- I have never been able to hit a fly with a ball, and the gods know I have
tried more than once. How do you do it? -- Crook
Foos Ball -- Better you to be the Duelmaster than I. I never know what to say in a
column, which Jorja would insist I write. You obviously have no difficulty with
this, so I leave it TO you. -- Leonidas
A Convicted Assassin. How...ordinary. Could they not, perchance send us an assassin
whose guilt is in doubt and let us put it to a trial by combat? That might produce
some interesting variations. -- Pete Mastiff
Tinieton -- Ah, all is now clear to me. As a neuter golem, you have no distractions,
and I, as attractive as I am to the opposite sex and others, have nothing BUT
distractions. It's a heavy cross to bear, but I know my duty. -- Lovarn
Arrakis -- Life in the Mordant army I could perhaps have endured. It was from other
impositions that I fled. Trust me when I say that you don't want to know the
details. -- Balbonsigo of Mordant, resurrected
Nod and Sod -- It is not for docility that guards are sometimes sent to the arena to
fight. Rather, it is for overweening ambition and an unfortunate lack of the
corresponding skills. Still, we will bear you in mind when we have another
discipline problem. -- Arenamaster Narhmin
P.S. As, in fact, Nod has done quite well this time.
