Leonidas rattled the pages of the Jhelum Chronicle as he turned the tabloid
inside out. "Have any of you been following the dispute over that lot to the south
of the city center?" he asked his teammates.
Pete Mastiff looked up. "Lord Somebody wants to build a mansion there, and the
Cult of Something Else wants to put in a temple, right?" He shook his head and
carved another slab of meat off the roast pig. "Nah, it's boring. Who cares?"
"We should care," Leonidas said. "If the Cult of Dreenth Shiszelle, the Spider
God, were to have a temple in the center of the city--"
"Give it a rest, Leo," Lovarno suggested. "A temple to a spider god?" The
youngest member of the team snorted. "That's a joke, not a danger. Who'd take them
seriously?"
Leonidas put the paper down on the table very carefully and stood, braced his
hands on the sturdy boards, and leaned over his young teammate. "I did not give you
leave to make games with my name," he said quietly.
Lovarno stared up at him, eyes wide, and swallowed.
Crook and Joseph exchanged a glance, and Crook cleared his throat. "Is this the
same Spider Cult that rose to prominence in Sibikhas a few years ago?"
Leonidas didn't look away from Lovarno, but he answered Crook. "Yes. At the
time when there were all those mysterious disappearances--"
"And the bodies that had been drained of all fluids and even flesh." Crook
shuddered. "I was there then, working as a bodyguard, and I saw some. Ghastly
husks. And anyone who mentioned a suspicion of the Spider Cult ended up...dead. Or
gone. We don't want that cult here."
"It might not be easy to prevent." Leonidas straightened, releasing Lovarno
from his intimidating stare.
"Easier to prevent it than try to drive it out after the fact," Crook said.

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Hey everybody,
watch out for LOVARNO, who flew up 22 points in the rankings after mashing NOD like a
melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on
the sands. FOSTER was bested by ARRAKIS and drops 14 points. Well, if ya don't
shows up at the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. FOOS BALL did not fight this
week so his title was forfeit. In front of all the crowds, FUZZ BALL took the
Duelmaster's crown for hers own. I give the bum two weeks. 4 out of 5 gladiators
surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location.
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid F BALLS, please raise you hand. Wow.
Does JHELUM really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch
WESTSIDE BULLOCKS' act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at
running from F BALLS. And who is this SOD you ask, with 29 points and a 4-12-1
record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Challenging down 18 points was TINIETON.
Pretty soon it'll be using two shields and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up'
pins. Definition of petty: TINIETON won victory over JOSEPH, a mismatch of 18
points. ANDY of DUDES had better have a good reason for challenging down 10 points
in a challenge which he killed. I thought ANDY showed great skill and promise when
he put to death BENCH. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! There's got to be more reason
for the sending of FAT BALL to the Dark Arena than his record (3-2-0). Anybody got
any ideas F BALLS? Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the
arena with you and see what happens.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in JHELUM have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some
