Setting the Deck
Aside from the steady, intoxicating thrum of drums and the rumbling cheers from
the arena, Jhelum was relatively quiet. With such an event going on, it was nearly a
ghost town aside from a few men leading a train of donkeys through town. Even the
inn was quiet. This caught Tao's attention and could mean one of two things. Either
Mack was sleeping or up to no good.
Tao sighed and marked his book of proverbs before setting it on his desk, Just
So. Everything neat and orderly as he liked it. He straightened his kimono-like
outfit and went to investigate.
"But he'll be so mad and what if I miss my bloodfeud? Come on, Mack..." Tao
heard as he passed Gavin's door. He also noticed Chance and Silvia standing casually
trying to act like they were deep in conversation. Tao narrowed his eyes at them,
then pushed open the door. To his surprise, Bastor was climbing out the window
holding one side of a rope, with Mack clutching the other.
"What in the name of gods and all creation are you two doing?" Tao snapped.
"Uh..." Bastor began, but with a furious glance from Mack, he clamped his mouth
shut and quickly disappeared out the window.
Mack grinned with his tusks gleaming. "Secret mission."
"From a second story window facing the main road in broad daylight?" Tao asked,
exasperated, placing a hand on his forehead.
Mack shrugged and gestured toward Chance and Silvia as they walked in.
"Lookouts."
Tao glared at them. "You're part of this, too?"
"Well.... We are a team and teams stick together, right?" they said.
"Hey! This isn't funny! Get me out of here!" a muffled voice called. It
sounded suspiciously like Gavin and was coming from the footlocker. Tao's face
reddened. "Mack!"
"Bye." With that, he tumbled out the window, rope in hand, followed by a thud
and startled cry.
"Oouf! I think I broke something." Bastor whined from below.
"Me fall," Mack snickered and tugged Bastor to his feet.
Tao glanced out the window, then back at the two lookouts, only to find them
gone. "Great. Gavin? Are you well?" he asked.
"Just *bleeping* peachy! Get me out of here!" the locker yelled. Tao checked
the lock and shook his head. "Watch your language, young man..."
"Tao, if you don't--"
"Sorry Gavin! I can't open it, Mack's got the key. If you're ok then maybe I
should keep an eye on them..."
"Tao! Don't you dare--" Tao didn't catch the rest as he nimbly leapt to the
ground and hurried after his teammates.
It took several streets before the Mirani finally caught up to them.
"Oh man..." Chance grumbled.
"I hope you have a good excuse for your actions!" Tao growled.
"Sabotage," Bastor said. At Tao's look, he put his hands up in defense. "Hey,
it wasn't my idea," he whined.
"And yet you are still here," Tao countered.
"Yeah, and with two working legs, too," he chimed back.
Mack shook his head with impatience, then slammed it into the door of a dwelling
in front of him. Another hit and the door flew open in a hail of splinters. "Too
much talk, stay out of it then," Mack muttered as he moved to enter the building.
Quick as lightning, Tao slapped a dagger into his hand and pressed it over
Mack's kidney. The others exchanged worried looks, but remained silent.
"You stab Mack in the back? Coward. Mirani have no honor," Mack growled. As
Tao eased pressure, Mack spun and grabbed Tao by the throat. The Mirani was faster,
though, and pricked Mack's throat lightly with his knife.
"I can take you Mack, don't toy with me," Tao said softly with a fearsome glint
in his eyes.
"Then stab, little man, or leave alone." Unfazed, Mack turned, letting Tao go,
and headed into the dwelling.
"Whoa. Sorry, Tao," Bastor said.
"One day Mack is going to push too far." Tao sighed and put the knife away.
One deep breath and he regained his composure. "You do realize we are going to miss
our matches. What are you guys up to, anyway?"
Chance and Silvia had already taken up lookout points as Bastor nervously rubbed
the back of his neck. "Well, Mack said we should pay a visit to some of the other
teams and cause a bit of mischief."
It finally dawned on Tao. This is where The Redlegs team stayed. "Oh no..."
"Right. So, he said, since Rose, well anyway they were going to get me, so I
should get them first. It made great sense at the time. Really." Bastor winced at
a loud crash inside.
Tao placed a hand on Bastor's shoulder. "You have a good heart, but mush for
brains. How do you always let Mack talk you into these things?"
Bastor looked down and twirled a toe. "He's very persuasive. Good with
words..."
"Curse words and threats, maybe. He didn't threaten to break your legs again?"
"Yeah, and toes," Bastor mumbled.
"Good grief. So he wanted to harass the Redlegs, huh?"
Bastor grinned slightly. "Oh no, they are just first. We're hitting everyone."
Mack finally walked out, dusting his hands. "All helmets smashed, place
trashed." He grunted with satisfaction. "War Dogs next."
"You have got to find a hobby, Mack," Tao said.
"We're going to be in so much trouble..." Bastor moaned.
... meanwhile ...
"Guys? This isn't funny anymore. When I get out of here you are so dead. No
pay for a year! Hello? Man I gotta pee. HELP!"

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
An improvement on last time, I won against a standby this time. The Khalhums
Dwarf, that hairy old chew-toy. Well, maybe I shouldn't call him that,
disrespectful, you know? And whatever his flaws, they're probably no worse than
mine, just different. Plus, he always shows up in the arena when he's needed.
Pete Mastiff
SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for JHELUM. MVP award for BASTOR? FAUX
TIDES' proud of him after beating LARKIN and getting 14 points. Talk about yer major
upsets! LARKIN's match with BASTOR cost him a loss of 15 points! Don't you think
the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think PETE MASTIFF should let KHALHUMS DWARF be
Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team insists all
their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of F BALLS must be
getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I
don't? I don't know what FAUX TIDES' been doing. They certainly haven't been
accepting many fights from F BALLS, that's fer sher. Like, is BROTHER TAO popular,
or what? He was challenged the most in all of JHELUM! He's got a 8-6-2, is that
good?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember
you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

The Convicted Assassin was not my opponent of choice, but he did lose nicely. That's
supposed to be an Andorian trait, too: assassination and being a polite loser. I
can live with the loser, and he must not be much of an assassin if he was caught and
convicted. -- Leonidas
So that's a Veteran Mercenary, huh? Let me guess, he's some kind of secret weapon,
we hire him out to our enemies and he helps 'em lose. -- Lovarno
Dunn -- You are impressively tall. Does this cause problems during the storm season?
-- Joseph
P.S. I only ask because I want to know.
Morgan -- Ah. Um. Sorry about some of that. I mean, I meant to hit you, but I
didn't intend to step on you afterward. -- Red Hammer, having altitude problems
Harlok of Gwent, Master of Kung-Fu -- Thanks. -- Pete Mastiff
Pete Mastiff -- I still think the arenamaster should issue you a muzzle. But it was
a good fight, for a dog. One does as one must. -- Morvangor, not from Khalhums but
somewhere farther south
Leonidas -- You didn't have to be so hard on me, dammit. I made one little mistake,
and people here are never going to let me live it down. It'd serve you all right if
I went out and assassinated some more people, maybe without even a contract! --
Trilibo of Sibikhas, Assassin Third Class
Lovarno -- A punk. And an ill-mannered punk, at that. Have you no respect for my
ancient bones? -- Doldo d'Ariske, Veteran Mercenary
Lovarno -- You're a shallow and pathetic youth. Anything I did to you last time, you
deserved. -- Morvangor, not from Khalhums but somewhere farther south
Griffey -- If you think this will give you a chance to get out of paying for the
socks you ordered, you can think again. -- Beldon Maes, Traveling Merchant
Sparky -- Teach me to fight like that so I can escape. -- Markan, Captured by
Fratsfans and Sold Down the Coast
Foul Ball -- Definitely! -- Fat Dan, Scribe and Gambler
Leonidas -- One Eyed Mack may be terribly suited to certain weapons but for some
reason he performs better with it than anything else I have tried. One day he will
learn to handle it better. (Wish I could figure out what I can realise without
burning skills though!) Besides you triple my skill! -- One Eyed Mack
Red Hammer -- Scratch paper? I just write in the margins. Maybe you shouldn't have
let the fight last until round three, ever thought of that? Oh no, blame Smyd he
won't mind, sheesh... -- Smyd
Radziff 'the Semi-Dangerous Criminal' -- I assure you that my intentions were pure
and innocent until you began waving that stick of yours at me. I only defended
myself. After all you're a dangerous criminal and so it was my right by law. As far
as converting...it is not my practice but if one were to take interest and ask,
well.... -- Brother Tao
17 July 2008
All -- Many of you know me and many more don't, but I will be scarce for a few
months. I am relocating, so look for my presence online! As my will, so mote it

*TURF WAR VI RULES*
Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns)
Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
1. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork
(DM 47) newsletter.
2. Announcements made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
Captains are responsible for:
1. Verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their
alliance;
2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
3. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
Participating managers who are not Captains must:
1. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter.
Announcement made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
a. No scores will be tabulated until a Gift Certificate is received.
No EXCEPTIONS.
b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or
aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate
disqualification from the Turf War (so be sure to take any
multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance).
d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams that do not properly
declare or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other
words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of
the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your scoring
will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before
scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift
Certificate received.
e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of
the Turf War.
f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions
will be final.
Scoring will be as follows for Fights:
Win Loss Kill Die
Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5
Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5
Bloodfeud +2 -5 +5 -10
Champion x2 x2 x2 x2
Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx

2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
4. Champions must be in the Adepts bracket or lower on the turn they are
declared, and may NOT have gone above Adepts level at any time; this
includes teams transferred into North Fork for the Turf War.
Bloodfeuds:
1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
Tournament Considerations:
1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged.
2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) wins such status.
3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 50 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) win such status.
4. Points for TVs and TCs will be applied the Turn after RSI posts
tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the
results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North
Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams).
Special Considerations:
1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with
Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf
War with Team A.
3. There will be a maximum of seven (7) teams allowed per alliance for the
Turf War.
4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior,
without penalty.
Prizes:
The Turf War is a "winner take all" contest. All prizes and 100% of the Gift
Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance. It is the
responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will
submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the
contest for the non-Certificate prizes.
The following prizes have been secured from RSI:
1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena;
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters (one for each manager in the winning
alliance);
3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance
(warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have
at least one arena fight to receive this award).
4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus
potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47)
5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each manager who fights in all 10 rounds
AND 45 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied to a living
warrior from (DM 47)
These awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee) within 4
turns of the end of TW VI.
Moderators:
The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all
dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All
questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque
Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message
to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email
questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com.
