Kargaed Chardinee was a little surprised that Ambitious Guard Rossanarth had chosen to go with him to the mysterious tower. It wasn't that he doubted the elf's courage; no Rirorni who had fought the elves around Xochithlan would do that, and besides, any man who would enter the arena was either brave or a fool. Or both, of course. And Rossanarth was not a fool, that Kargaed had ever noticed. But the idea of having an elf as a comrade in a tight spot was...unusual. "We must be nearly there," Rossanarth said suddenly. His movement changed, making it clear that the taller warrior had his feet on the bottom. "I never heard of any shoal water here, so this must be the base of the tower's island." Kargaed tightened his grip on the piece of wood he'd caught and kicked awkwardly, trying to get close enough to touch bottom himself. It would feel very good to get his feet on something solid instead of having them dangling in the water. He hadn't wanted to panic and show himself afraid in front of the elf, but he WAS afraid. He was a horsemen, not a damned fish! "I can't see anything but water," Rossanarth said after a moment. He stretched upward to his full height, might even be standing on his toes. "I should be able to see the damned tower, but I can't!" "Illusion, in case anyone gets close," Kargaed guessed. He got far enough to have his own feet on the bottom and heaved a sigh of relief. Although he didn't let go of the floating wood. Just in case. "Why?" Rossanarth wanted to look at his companion but didn't. Just because he couldn't see anything didn't mean there was no danger. He had a piece of wood from the destroyed ships, too, but for him, it was a club, not a float. There was satisfaction in the Rirorni's voice. "Because it's vulnerable, somehow. The black tower can be destroyed, once we figure out how." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 528): BRICK WALL of HOMICIDAL MANIACS (Nick, mgr.) I'm extremely glad that this will be my last column. Not that I don't enjoy writing them, but I was getting nervous about my ability to graduate from the arena. I believe I'm my manager's first size 21 warrior to graduate from basic after approximately 130 others before me. The fact that it was accomplished with a rather impressive record is all the better. For those who may be interested in such things, my so called numbers are 9(1)-5(1)-21-16(1)-21-4-11, and favourites are Shortspear, Lo-VHi with the Dodge Tactic and a tendency to learn defence. Final ratings are Masters in Attack and Init, Advanced Expert in Defence. Unfortunately, the team will probably only be around a couple of more turns, as the rest of the team is not particularly interesting to the Boss. Bull Durham Party Animals SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, KALTOS? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see LHOTSE win a fight and gain 21 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, LHOTSE beat CHESTER EGG and CHESTER EGG lost 19 points. You're breakin' my heart. Going for broke or broken, our Duelmaster ARENAMASTER TROKTAI Dark Arena Challenged this turn. The crowds were amazed this turn, as ARENAMASTER TROKTAI killed the Duelmaster, BULL DURHAM, leaving PARTY ANIMALS in mourning. This incredible death has allowed, I might add, MOUSE DAVIS from PARTY ANIMALS to ascend to the throne of Duelmaster, and I hear DARK ARENA is not happy. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. KALTOS, I am losing what little hope I had in you. EVEREST LLP the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like PARTY ANIMALS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. HOFFA was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I notice MOUSE DAVIS challenging down 16 points to fight ZAKAU, PARTY ANIMALS doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult to honor. Question now is, will KALTOS accept this sort of tacky behavior? MOUSE DAVIS beating ZAKAU. The insult, the....yech! And we have SAMANTHA FOX in a challenge, going down 14 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought SAMANTHA FOX showed great skill and promise when she subdued HOFFA. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for KALTOS' morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the KALTOS arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of KALTOS. I feel much better now. What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of selected arenas has become a far from fun experience. In other words Hammer has had it! The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from his planned sponsorship of any future contests. There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors. Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the time, effort and money spent over the past several years. May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today. Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history. 19 September 2005 I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord Xiang, D2-101 26 September 2005 Regarding the Regional News: If any of y'all glance at it and find some arenas are behind, rest assured I'll get them caught up next time around. I was trying to unsnarl the darned thing, but it was just getting worse, so I decided gradual and partial was better than not at all or ever. -- The Saint, keeper of lists LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS BULL DURHAM was butchered by ARENAMASTER TROKTAI in a 1 minute Dark Arena fight.
