Orverd clambered in behind him and took a rowing position, reaching for the oars while Fergus got them shoved away from the dock. "Who saw whatever-it-is off Whistling Rock?" he asked. "Not many people go out that way." "A guy off a ship," Fergus answered, shrugging. "A pilot, I think, but not a harbor pilot, so he had time to look around when they were coming in. At least, I think so." "Think he was a pilot?" "Yeah...and I think he was off one of the ships that just came in today. Or yesterday. Probably. Not someone I've seen before, anyway." He glanced over his shoulder to set a course and dipped his oars into the water. Orverd frowned over that as he rowed, but after a few minutes dismissed the puzzle. No one expected him to solve puzzles, after all. If Fergus wanted to go check Whistling Rock because a stranger saw something, fine. Better than hanging around the guildhouse practicing his gladiatorial moves. Besides, he was never sure he HAD any personal moves, just ones he'd copied, usually not very well--at least, they didn't work well for him--from other gladiators. Much better to think about what he might say to Bombette to get her to go for a walk with him, and maybe a drink. Dancing, maybe. He was actually a pretty good dancer, though most people never expected it of him. The job of rowing reclaimed his attention as the boat suddenly slid sideways down a wave that was too big to be happening right now, and the water grabbed at one of his oars. Well, he was no stranger to tricky currents, and neither was Fergus, so he set himself to follow whatever orders Fergus gave, and in the meantime to row whenever he could get an oar into the water. He could hear the sound for which Whistling Rock was named, so they must be there. Oh. Then Fergus was probably going around the rock to see if he could find whatever was here, which would explain the strange motions. Good. He liked for things to have reasons. "There's a man in the water!" Fergus said. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. OK, I'm duelmistress again, as expected so I have to write something. How about a simple breakdown on the Paper Marios? Come on out and play with us! Sushie, The Really Neat Duelmistress SPY REPORT Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out KALTOS to see what's new. Like, THE MIDDLE WAY 5 had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by PAPER MARIO! Way to go PAPER MARIO! And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome MICKEY MANTLE. Aren't SPORTS GREATS proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos. So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these really neat Spyreports can it? THE MIDDLE WAY 5 was the most avoided team. Is a 311-333-13 record really that scary? Is there some deep dark secret why PAPER MARIO's been avoiding THE MIDDLE WAY 5 so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can SPORTS GREATS' MICKEY MANTLE be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same? For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out TWINK challenged FERGUS HILL. After all, haven't PAPER MARIO and THE MIDDLE WAY 5 had a long standing duel in KALTOS? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but FERGUS HILL wants me to write about it since he lost to TWINK. Satisfied? Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give it a break? Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do? I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. We propose that Lord Protectors ranked "Grand Champions" and below (ADM) and "The Tower Guard" and below (Primus) be allowed to fight in the Dark Arena. This would not impact the top rankings or title match. Any managers who never got his fill or shot at fighting Gateway monsters would have it as an option. We believe it might spark some interest in the ADM/Primus realm for some managers. If interested, speak up in the newsletters or on forums under the "rules changes" thread and let RSI know. This could even be something to try for 12 months and then be re-evaluated. What say you, managers of Ghea? -- The Icelord sends.... 29 January 2007 HDFA Mission Statement "Show me the money!"
