                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hey, Dartor, you cutie! I'm top dog around here, so I'll tell you about The
Paper Marios Consortium affiliation. Luigi is getting old and cannot remember
anyway. The dunce!
Yes, some years ago, and for quite a while, High Hopes, managed by Snuffy, was a
fixture in Kaltos. It was a fun time, they say. Then The Consortium head boss
decided to retire. Who knows why? One rumor was that the closing of many small
arenas where they participated was the last rung in the equation. Another dunce!
When he did, he packed up all he owned DM-wise and both physically and officially
gave it to the one called Soultaker. And then there were none! No Snuffy.
Not surprisingly (I can say that in retrospect!) later on the old head boss
decided to return and he asked for some primary teams back from that Soultaker. He
returned on a lesser scale, and High Hopes was not in the proposition. (Hence, High
Hopes yet belongs to Soultaker.) At the time of the return, an old friend "willed"
the Paper Marios to the boss, and asked him personally to take care of the team. He
did. (Hence, we now have ME and, of course, the forgetful Luigi.) See?
And, now, as you know, The Consortium has three teams in Aruak City--The
original Bulldogs, Animal Farm from Seam DM20 (which is now going to be a slow
basher-only arena, they say) and Colorific from DM48. Say "hi" to them for me!
All is told. Except, there are rumors that The Paper Marios are not so long for
existence. Life is not so sweet with so few friends here.
May you thrive in D2 forever!

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome KALTOS. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have
I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Biff! Pow! KALTOS watched
with glee as THE MIDDLE WAY 5 got knocked off top spot by PAPER MARIO! A team with
purpose! A team with the skill to back up their boasts! Getting a 4-1-1 their first
time out is IMAGE. What's with GEN-13? She actually beat KALTOS' PERSISTENT BEGGAR,
and walked away with 16 more points from the fight. Major screwup at THE MIDDLE WAY
5. KATIRONA MURH lost 12 points to SLINKY. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe
KATIRONA MURH will provide more easy wins... See how the Duelmaster challenged THE
MIDDLE WAY 5's ORVERD QUILL? That sort of initiative is how she got where she is
now. ORVERD QUILL was reminded on the sands why BOMBETTE is Duelmaster. Advice to
fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was CASSEY'S CREW. Management must be dealin', as the boys at
PAPER MARIO ain't reelin'! CASSEY'S CREW's mad! What do people see in ORVERD QUILL?
His 22-31-1? THE MIDDLE WAY 5 ain't talkin', but he's got 105 points.
Warriors of KALTOS unite. You have only your games to lose! Is it my
imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so
gloriously!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Well, Overd, I'm starting to think that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Know what I mean? Fergus ain't here and he seems to be ignoring me. You, on the
other hand, are looking hotter and hotter! Perhaps that "ugly" was a little hasty
and said in the heat of the moment. (No, not THAT heat of the moment.) -- Bombette

Christina -- I am really, really sorry that happened. I don't know how I was capable
of it. Gee! I didn't mean for that to happen. No! -- Tiny Toes

Bombette -- Graduate already! Fergus is giving me HECK because I lost to you and got
my Invite. The silly boob is going nuts over you. -- Orverd Quill
P.S. Of course he does. One leg at a time, just like anybody!

Sasha -- Ur. Um. Ah... Jorja is amazed to see a team ranked below ours? Good
fight? Whatever. -- Katirona Murh

Silly Assassin! He should be up in Andoria, where I hear there's a lot of work for
him lately. -- Gerdig Ibbins

I kinda like orcs, within reasonable limits. Like, within cages. -- Jammy Larke

The Embezzling Scribe is a fool. -- Felissa Hurm

4948, FELISSA HURM 4955, GEN-13 4949, SPAWN 4946, TINY TOES 4913, SLINKY 4915, and
JAMMY LARKE 4926.

The following warriors have traveled to AD after fighting this turn:

ORVERD QUILL (5-4834) THE MIDDLE WAY 5 (453)

                                 THE STOMPING GROUNDS

The new all-basher arena will be in Seam, DM 20. Only new teams (0FE) may
participate. The only rule is that all of your warriors must be bashers.

The first turn of the contest will be due on Monday, April 28. It will be a slow
turn-around arena. If you wish to enter a team, please submit your new team and first
turn strategies before then. Only one team per manager, please.

This arena will stay open indefinitely, providing there is interest (i.e., this is not
a contest that runs a set number of turns, although there are prizes scheduled after
the first 15 rounds). For more information, see details in the first newsletter or on
the forums.

Zeb Karan looked around the table at the rest of Dwes Eg's staff. Arenamasters,

standby and Dark Arena warriors, stewards and infirmarians, even the maintenance crew.
There was wine and beer on the side-table, even sandwiches, but no one was partaking.
"Stop looking like your dog died," Lew Voth said. He had once been the
arenamaster of Sentern and had taken his turns overseeing the fights in Dwes Eg. "We
all knew this day would come. When are they closing us down?"
"Immediately after the tourney, according to the information I was given."
"Short notice," Jame Rinvar, another arenamaster commented.
"No offense intended, these things just creep up on people. Tourneys make it
worse, I suppose, all the new teams being entered." Zeb grimaced. "Some of the file
cabinets have exploded from over-stuffing, you know, and it takes so long to run
through all the registered gladiators to find those who are planning to fight on any
given day that the day is OVER by the time we're ready to start."
"Which is why they closed down Sentern, Cimmeriac, and Firehold," Lew pointed
out. "This is the same thing all over again."
"Cycles," Jame said. "Things happen, and then later they happen again. We live
with it. And Dwes Eg did last for, what, eight and a half years before it reached the
explosion point. That isn't bad. That's forever, speaking practically."
"Eight or nine years is not forever--"
"The only thing that's real is today, and maybe, up to a point, tomorrow. I
don't see a problem with this. What are the new parameters, Zeb?"
"Dwes Eg remains open, existing teams can run and can recruit new members. BUT,
no new teams will be accepted. New teams will go into a new arena, DM 84, running its
first turn on the seventh of May. A regular two-week cycle."
"So Dwes Eg isn't actually being closed, just closed to new teams. Okay. This
works," Jame said again. "Number 84... does this mean it'll be out at that Blackstone
place? Rotten weather half the year, but I suppose you could say that about any site.
What about regional allegiance?"
"None specified in the data I received. Probably a personal-choice situation,"
Zeb said.
      "Transfers?" Lew asked.
"I don't know about transfers IN," Zeb said, "but I'd guess yes, they would be
allowed. No transfers OUT, though. None out of DM 82, for that matter. Once you're
in 82 or 84, the only way out is death or graduation."
"That fairly describes most arenas," Jame said. "Anyone who takes up the
gladiatorial life has already accepted that."
