                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

I don't have much time; he's going to be back soon. You have to listen to me:
Stay away from "Jethro."
It sounds funny, doesn't it? It's not an intimidating name; quite the opposite,
in fact. But that's part of his plan. He puts on this whole folksy, backwoods,
salt-of-the-earth dumb cracker shtick to put people off their guards, and then, when
you least expect it, you're trapped. Like me. A 'simple' contract, promises of fame
and glory in the arena, a few drops of blood...and you're his. Forever.
He's not mortal. I don't even think he's human. I don't know what he is, but
he's evil beyond any doubt. Evil, and...old. He doesn't look that old, but if you
ever see him when he's angry, you can see the ancient malevolence glittering behind
those pale gray eyes of his.
I'm taking my life in my hands by writing this, but you have to be warned. I'm
sure he'll see this before too long, but I don't think he'll know which one of us
wrote it, and I don't think he'll kill us outright. He needs us too much, though I
don't know for what. From what he's let slip, though, he's got some sort of master
plan, and we're part of it. We just need to stay alive--and do well enough in the
arena to keep him from replacing us--while we're trying to find out what he's up to,
and if there's any way to stop him. Because whatever he's up to, it's not going to
be pretty.
You have to believe me. Stay away from him. Don't talk with him, don't believe
what he says or writes, and for all the gods' sakes, never sign a contract with him.
We're not here to kill anyone--at least, I'm not. I'm not sure which of the others
are still resisting him. But if it happens...well, if we're the only ones that can
stop him, we need to stay alive long enough to do it. If that means some of you have
to die, well, I'm sorry.
Oh gods, I think he's coming back. Be careful.

-- One of Jethro's Tools

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well well well. I'm still here, and without a mook fight last time to pad my
kills. Considering my esteemed foe had about 8 fights on me, I guess you could say I
won purely by style. I wouldn't, but you can if makes you feel better. I won't
argue since I'm definitely a stylin' fella.
No avoiding my fate though, I guess. Jack's been constantly trying to prime me
for a fight with Ashanti. He's been warning me that if I don't get out of it, it
might be my last. So that's the fight I've been avoiding until now. But there's no
escaping destiny, so unlike Red Fusion's foolish tactic of avoiding me (which
backfired and bit him in the ass so hard that he hasn't got one left) I'm going to
throw both my challenges at Ashanti. Ashanti is likely better than me in every way,
more experienced, more skilled, and holds the stylistic advantage. I shouldn't win,
and I might not even survive, but I'm embracing what must be.
If I die, I die with an excellent record, lots of kills, and the knowledge that
I have greatly surpassed my potential. That's more than most of you will be able to
say on the eve of your own possible destruction. So win, lose, or die, I'm going out
the same way I came in. Kicking and screaming and drunk and naked.
     It's been fun.

Your incredible Duelmaster, Aimed Blow extraordinaire, and murderer of losers,

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. TRANSEL needs a spyreport." Oh, well. I don't wanna hurt
anybody's feelings or anything, but IT'S NEW! really goofed with their 0-0-0. Talk
about hot teams! JETHRO'S TOOLS goes out, the very first time, and goes 4-1-2!
Like, what do you guys eat for breakfast? MVP award for TEAL'C? SCIENCE FICTION's
proud of him after beating BATMAN and getting 20 points. Talk about yer major
upsets! HAN SOLO's match with GRIZZLY ADAMS cost him a loss of 8 points! The
Duelmaster isn't going to stop just cause he's Number One! ASHANTI knows this. She
was challenged by the Duelmaster. And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's
habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome ASHANTI. Aren't KREWE OF DRUID proud. (Oh, my.) I
hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want
photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. SCIENCE
FICTION was the most avoided team. Is a 108-96-5 record really that scary? Hhmph!
What kind of warriors are SUPER HEROES? SCIENCE FICTION, an easy team to beat if I
ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Like, is HAN SOLO popular, or
what? He was challenged the most in all of TRANSEL! He's got a 8-7-0, is that good?
See if I ever talk to SERENGETI again! UNCLE SPANKY was so low when She challenged
she. Hhmph! I was sorry to see such an unfair "fight" in TRANSEL. SERENGETI got 2
points after beating UNCLE SPANKY, 25 points below her. ANGEL must not be a good
enough fighter to get in fair fights. He challenged SECOND OMEN. 10 is a big
difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought ANGEL showed great skill and
promise when he was subdued by SECOND OMEN. All right, so I slept through it! Big
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? I was SO depressed when I heard BATMAN got killed. He was just a kid,
and didn't get a fair chance in TRANSEL, or anything! What if they had a fight and
nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. TRANSEL is like such a dump, and you guys
smell too much! Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Jack -- Come on, admit it. You want the bloodfeud against Ivanmoe because you don't
want to face him to face Ashanti. She's built to kill your boy and she may just get
Its New! their revenge for them (kind of ironic seeing how my warriors were the only
other ones to ever defeat that scum, and that it was my goal to kill him). Now that
Ashanti is the only challenger champ out there your only prayer would be a
bloodfeud...unfortunately, Its New! was a one man team, so...let's dance. -- Druid

Ivanmoe -- No man can refuse a beautiful Nubian queen such as myself (nor would they
want to, just look at me). You aren't avoiding me are you, precious? I promise to
be gentle. >;) -- Ashanti

Jack -- You convinced some fresh meat to join this arena? Cool. Can't wait to
welcome them in my usual fashion -- Druid

Vizzerdix -- I really, really, really HATE you. My goal is to defeat you just ONCE
before I leave this arena. -- Ashanti (licking her wounds for the umpteenth time)

Batgirl -- Boeuf Gras couldn't take any more humiliation (and I couldn't stand the
fact that were it not for all his losses I'd be over .500 right now. So he committed
suicide/I killed him off this turn. Don't worry, I have other warriors for you to
play with. -- Druid

Assur -- Leaving just when this place is starting to get fun again? Rethink, my good
man. -- Druid

All -- A scum running 66% wins ain't worth the effort, so Plainsman is looking at a
short rest-of-his-life. I'm giving him a last-minute reprieve this turn, what with
all the bawling and pleading. I had to shut them up or lose my mind, this team is
nothing but a bunch of drama queens. But he'd better start winning or it's off to
the DA. Thus, without him, their averages are 7.5-9.25-10.5-17-13.5-9.75-16.5. I
likes 'em coordinated, see. -- Saucy Jack, yr. ob'd'nt 'umble mgr., Soul Strippers

Unforgiven -- I hear you, I've been getting everywhere a full week after it runs,
sometimes later. I have like 4 days now to get DM 1 in. Hope it doesn't mess with
your strategy too bad, but then again you look like you're doing ok as it is. --
Saucy Jack

Batman -- Guess you learn better when you lose. We can do that again if you like. --

Caseopeia -- That is a sterling example of a little thing I like to call a
PREPOSTEROUS LOSS. A wise young man (me) once said, 'You're not my real dad, you're
not the boss of me.' I'll be quiet now, since I think that clears things up quite
well indeed. -- Philosononymous

Viz -- Where'd that come from, I wonder? Oh well, I don't really care. -- Ivanmoe

Second Omen -- I thought that strategy would work out for me. Thanks for helping me
prove it. -- Uncle Spanky

Spiderman -- That sucked. -- Kaiari

Philosononymous -- I never know what to write back to warriors who write ads just to
hear themselves talk. So that is all I'll say about your self proclaimed wise words.
-- Second Omen

Saucy Jack -- Second Omen will be running in the arena when he is not timing for
tourneys. -- Doc Steele

I must go to Malaysia for work. I'll miss 1 to 2 turns. Sorry :-) I know I'll miss
you all more than you miss me. -- Shocking Toad, the Manager of Science Fiction

Howdy, y'all! This is Jethro, the manager of Jethro's Tools, and I just wanted to say
"howdy"! It sure is good to be here in Transel--the place has a lot of history, don't
it? Not to mention some right tough warriors. I surely hope my boys can put up a
good fight with your boys and give the folks in the stands a right good show. Oh,
and if you read all that claptrap about me bein' some kinda evil overlord, don't pay
it no mind; I reckon somebody around here has a overactive imagination, that's all.
-- Jethro

Druid -- Yes, it's the same Night Train from 37 and it's the same manager. -- BPR

Saucy -- Maybe we'll have a little battle at the top. -- BPR

Diane --- Good fight on your part. I was not ready for a woman to whup my butt! Now
I won't be able to get a woman unless they are into giving punishment. I'm not going
for it though. Congrats on your win. -- Green Hornet
P.S. See ya all in a few months. My manager is sending me to training camp to help

Han Solo -- No man hits me and gets away with it. I will never forget that whupping.
Thanks for opening my eyes and making me realize that I have been too gentle lately.
One of my buddies will see you soon. Smile. -- Bat Girl

Kaiari -- Well well I didn't get a chance to spin a web on you. The fight was over
too fast. At least I can fight better than Batman. -- Spiderman

Spiderman -- I heard that; you are lucky you and me can't fight. Because I could
beat you, Web Man, believe that. -- Batman

All -- Green Goblin will not be around any longer. He broke some bad rules, and must
give his life. He chose his path. -- Unforgiven

STOP THINKING TOGS!!!!! It's here. Well, almost here anyway. We're looking at
a start date of the first turn in Aradi (DM 60) following the Fall Mail-In. This
should give everyone sufficient time to study the new ultra-improved T#%S IV rules
and prep accordingly. So without further ado, here is your handy-dandy guide to
winning your very own Golden Scrod (and some other very cool prizes to be announced
officially before the start of the tourney that must not be named):
1. Each T#%S team consists of two managers. After the tourney starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your partners wisely. T#%S IV will
last for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so. The only
team I know of so far is last TOGS winners: Ganolus Oakleaf/Hombre of Blood
Related/Thieves Guild. Hey, this is fun!
2. The T#%S entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per T#%S
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no
exceptions being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or
manager decides to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
    a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:
       Andy Salveson
       6812 Romanzo Way
       Elk Grove, CA 95758
    b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards and
no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. T#%S point system:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on another T#%S warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random matchup against another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning a random matchup against a non-T#%S warrior. Do not fight
your team mate, you will not get any points. Also, you will not get any points
if you challenge or get challenged by a non-T#%S team, so use your avoids
wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
10 points for being the Duelmaster. This is in addition to all points listed
above and will begin turn 1, so prep accordingly.
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member, 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the
      newsletter (that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and I will be
completely firm on this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will
not be given points if they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not
Duelmasters or fantasy related. I will be the sole judge of this. If you're
unsure if I will judge something to be Duelmasters or fantasy related, then
e-mail me before you write the spotlight and ask me. I reserve the right to
take points away from a spotlight after they are given if I judge at a later
time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
      personal ad.
-5 points for being the team that avoided the most.
If you participated in TOGS III, you'll notice some slight changes in the points
structure. The main things are points for random match ups against non T#%S
warriors, bonus points for being the Duelmaster, new spotlight criteria, and no
points given for being the most avoided team.
4. I already mentioned this, but T#%S IV will start the first turn in arena 60 after
the Fall Mail-In runs and it will last for 13 turns. There will not be a
Survivor format this time around, meaning no eliminations. I will still be doing
the multipliers at the end, however. This means that all points accumulated by a
team on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by
each team on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Prizes are yet to be determined, but I'll tell you what I know. There will be
prizes given out each turn to whichever team scores the most combined points on a
given turn. Tie breakers will go to the team with the most wins on that turn and
then to the team with most overall points. I have asked RSI for the same prizes
as last TOGS which were transferring any warrior to arena 60 and renaming Aradi
for approximately 6 months, but we'll see what they come back with. I haven't
decided how to split the prizes up, partly because I don't know how many teams
will be entering yet, but I do know the prizes will be split among the top 3
teams at the end. I will announce the exact breakdown of everything when I know
6. And just like TOGS III, Death Stud and I will be the sole arbiters of any dispute
that may arise. Whine all you like, but as Nuln told you last time, that's how
    it is.
7. M & RR Clause (go ahead, read between the capitals): I reserve the right to
disallow entry to this tourney if you have a previous history of being a big fat
    mouth about everything.
I think that pretty much covers it. I will be accepting team entries as of now
and then posting them in the newsletters as I receive entry fees. Please feel free
to e-mail me regarding any questions or comments at Ganolus@aol.com. So everyone don
your best pair of leg warmers, hop on your favorite farm animal, and ride to Aradi
for the 4th kinda-annual Tournament that must not be named for no apparent reason
whatsoever, or T#%S IV, for short. See ya'll there!

-- Ganolus Oakleaf, T#%S IV Commish

To All Managers -- I would like to take this time to announce that my alliance, The
Association, is no more. Due to the dead weight managers of the alliance and their
lack of participation, DarkSpirit and I have formed a new alliance: The Firm. We
have taken on two members so far and are looking for a few more. If you would like
to find out more about The Firm, you can diplo Dark Spirit, Unknowns XX in arena 15
or myself, Sungod, Sadists F2FII in arena 62.
                               --* The Firm *--
