Valamantis:
M. Kargaed Chardinee was a little surprised that Ambitious Guard Rossanarth had
chosen to go with him to the mysterious tower. It wasn't that he doubted the elf's
courage; no Rirorni who had fought the elves around Xochithlan would do that, and
besides, any man who would enter the arena was either brave or a fool. Or both, of
course. And Rossanarth was not a fool, that Kargaed had ever noticed. But the idea
of having an elf as a comrade in a tight spot was...unusual.
"We must be nearly there," Rossanarth said suddenly. His movement changed,
making it clear that the taller warrior had his feet on the bottom. "I never heard
of any shoal water here, so this must be the base of the tower's island."
Kargaed tightened his grip on the piece of wood he'd caught and kicked
awkwardly, trying to get close enough to touch bottom himself. It would feel very
good to get his feet on something solid instead of having them dangling in the water.
He hadn't wanted to panic and show himself afraid in front of the elf, but he WAS
afraid. He was a horsemen, not a damned fish!
"I can't see anything but water," Rossanarth said after a moment. He stretched
upward to his full height, might even be standing on his toes. "I should be able to
see the damned tower, but I can't!"
"Illusion, in case anyone gets close," Kargaed guessed. He got far enough to
have his own feet on the bottom and heaved a sigh of relief. Although he didn't let
go of the floating wood. Just in case.
"Why?" Rossanarth wanted to look at his companion but didn't. Just because he
couldn't see anything didn't mean there was no danger. He had a piece of wood from
the destroyed ships, too, but for him, it was a club, not a float.
There was satisfaction in the Rirorni's voice. "Because it's vulnerable,
somehow. The black tower can be destroyed, once we figure out how."

SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, TRANSEL? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed
to see HOBBLED win a fight and gain 12 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, HOBBLED beat
JAKOB and JAKOB lost 8 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the
spice of life, TRANSEL may be getting bland, as COOKIE FOR THE SOUL stays top dog in
the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of
these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. DARK
PANTHEON, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of
cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was HOLE IN THE WALL. Ha ha ha ha!
Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, JAKOB was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave
team is developing these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in TRANSEL to get a drink than The Sultan's
Tent! Any suggestions? Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have
too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Paste this one in your scrapbooks,
you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.

I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101
5 October 2005
To those once of Willaf -- It's time to come back to the sands. I'm back,
exclusively at Willaf.... -- Kurd the Vivisectionist, Your Better
