TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
The door to the cabana slammed. A woman screamed. More of a startled little
shriek than a real scream, perhaps. Someone cried out for another shot, "Vin! More
vin!"
It was a typical night at the Beach Babes' cabana, so far as there was such a
thing as a typical night. Surfer Sam was expected back from Riztab any time now--the
Shuttle was SUPPOSED to have gotten into Bonsur at sunset, but with the rain, it
might have been delayed. Sometimes the road washed out. There can be such a thing
as too much cleanliness. All the team would be able to say for itself would be that
nobody had died in the past three turns. Sam was an easy going man, as acting
managers went, but they all sensed that he would not be impressed by this.
The Umbrella Man, concerned about the Userous Merchant he'd fought (see personal
later in this newsletter), was brooding over his vin. Or maybe he was just being
moody and drunk, because he didn't have much experience brooding. Setting up
umbrellas on the beach every morning and taking them down at night is not a job that
requires a brooder. It wasn't like he was a hen, after all.
The door slammed again, more forcefully, after letting in a gust of cold rain.
Laguna Lil and Paulametta shrieked obediently. Actually, they barely yipped. The
door didn't always latch properly, and sometimes it slammed half a dozen times in a
row if the wind was just wrong. Nobody looked up.
A third slam. There was something so pointed, so much suppressed violence, in
that slam that the gladiators put down their various goblets, newsletters, daggers,
and so on and turned toward the door.
It was open, and their acting manager, Surfer Sam, stood in it, hands on hips
and annoyance on face. When he saw he had their attention--finally--he nodded once
sharply and stepped back into the pouring rain, closing the door quietly in front of
himself.
Then he threw open the door, burst in out of the storm, and kicked it shut
behind him. The door, not the storm. He was very wet, somewhat battered by
hailstones, and he took the formal pose designated by mimes as "Man Fleeing
Monsters"--eyes open as wide as they would go, one arm extended behind him with the
hand held vertically in a gesture universally accepted as meaning "stop," or possibly
"get back," or in two obscure villages high in the Daggerspines "your goat just fell
through my roof and landed in my scrambled eggs."
Tallahassee Tina took a quick look around the cabana's common room to make sure
there were neither goats nor scrambled eggs in sight, then said, "Gosh! Monsters!
Where's my sword?"
"They can't get in as long as we keep the door shut and the lights on," Sam
said, relaxing. "But the wretched things have been following me for miles. Wrecked
the Shuttle, too." He rubbed a hip, presumably bruised in the wreck of the inter-
arena-city stagecoach. "They kept trying to climb through the windows. Tipped it
off balance, and when we came to that sharp curve just above Rocklawn Station over we
went."
Behind him, the door rattled gently against its frame.
Sam hunched his shoulders but didn't turn to look at it. "No! I will NOT let
them in. There are limits even for a Hero, and I do NOT have to rescue monsters!"

SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to BONSUR once again! Biff! Pow! BONSUR watched with glee as
BLADES OF ICE got knocked off top spot by BEACH BABES! Ya gotta be quick on yer
feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! FLOWER CHILDREN
is now ranked 7th with a 0-1-0 turn. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say
anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well UNDER JOLLY ROGER moved up 3,
to 3rd. What's with DR SEUSS? He actually beat VIRULENT DESTINY's T. CRURIS, and
walked away with 27 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at BLADES OF ICE
while they watched NUMBER 3 clobber LAGUNA LIL. She lost 8 points and got bruised
from objects thrown from the stands. Try as she might, TALLAHASSE TINA wasn't good
enough at persuading TASTY HANGNAIL to step down from the Duelmaster's throne...
Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
BONSUR thinks VIRULENT DESTINY and their 62-44-5 is too much! If at first you don't
succeed, give up... The bums at UNDER JOLLY ROGER couldn't face the challenges from
VIRULENT DESTINY! No excuse for that!
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master
many skills, fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are
you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

P.S. With a record like that, I'm surprised you're not on OUR team.
Good gods! The Userous Merchant is a golem! This raises a whole host of disquieting
speculations. WHO is making these golem merchants and setting them to SPY on us?
WHY are they programmed to practice usery, thus GUTTING our economy? Are they subtle
agents of SABOTAGE? Have we here in Bonsur a hidden ENEMY somewhere? WHAT is the
truth of this puzzling and DANGEROUS matter? -- the Umbrella Man
P.S. Inquiring Minds want to KNOW this stuff. So start digging! We need research!
