At least, Sam hoped they'd gone to bed. How good was a gladiator going to be who stayed up late the night before the fights, partying? Of course, he'd done it himself in his day, but that was because nobody told him how foolish it was. Now, of course, as a manager, or the next thing to one, he could afford to stay up as late as he wanted. It wouldn't be HIM down there on the sands. He listened to the rain battering the roof of the cabana and frowned. It had seemed like a good idea at the time he built the place--right after he graduated, because this was his Lord Protector land--to go with the Rustic Beach Look. Roof thatched with palm leaves, that kind of thing. It still seemed like a good idea... all summer. But now, he sighed and shook his head, now he could hear the dripping of water, and feel the cold drafts, and it didn't seem so good. It made him feel old. How could he be old? He was a Lord Protector. Ageless. Ah, but a lot of friends had died over the years. Gladiators shouldn't really have friends, so many of them died. It could get lonely. He thought of getting himself a mug of beer, so that he could cry into it. That was the Done Thing in such a situation, wasn't it? He did like to be sure he was doing the Right Things. It was part of the Hero Code. And that was another thing. Back when he'd graduated, being a Lord Protector and being a Hero were synonymous. Uh, the same thing. These days...he sighed heavily. These youngsters just didn't care. They figured being a Lord Protector was just one long party. No thoughts for the responsibilities. They just didn't get the same class of gladiators these days. All "what's in it for me?" boys. He definitely needed some beer to cry into. Ruined the beer, of course, but that was okay, he didn't stock good beer here at the cabana. He preferred vin. Made it himself, too, and aged it at least three days. Maybe he could have beer to cry into, and a vin on the side for drinking? He could wallow in being lonely and realizing what a worthless crew the youngsters were these days, and then in the morning he could have a righteous hangover and get on with his life. It sounded like a plan. He wished Applejack was here. Applejack had understood about the burdens of growing older. Or at least, uh, spending more years accumulating responsibilities. Applejack knew how to get drunk, too. But he'd gone to, where had he gone? Stormcrowe? Rotten place, Stormcrowe. Cold and wet. Of course, it was cold and wet here tonight. But it was always like this on Stormcrowe. It was enough to make you wonder why anyone would live there. You couldn't tell him that anybody but a fish liked being cold and wet! During a pause in the thunder and the heavy lashing of the rain, he heard the door to the cabana rattle on its own. He hunched his shoulders and did not turn to look at it. Probably that monster, the one who had followed him home. Monsters were awfully stubborn. Sometimes you could train one to be a gladiator. He recalled that Assurnasirbananapeel had done that with his team Big Bad. A long time ago. Time just got away from you if you turned your back on it for a minute. You went along perfectly happily, surfing and partying on the beach, paused to accept your notice of graduation, and the next thing, there you were getting old. Gray hairs and wrinkles in his tan. There should be a law against it. The door rattled again, and something whined softly. Sam had seen those monsters hours ago, when they'd wrecked the Shuttle while trying to climb through the windows and sit on his lap. They had followed him home. He hated it when things like that happened. With a sigh, as of one bearing the weight of the whole world on his shoulders, he got up and investigated the icebox. There was half a roasted turkey in it. Fortunately, nobody wanted to eat leftover turkey. Long before it was gone, you got really tired of it, and besides, it started to taste like the inside of the icebox. So it would be no loss. He carried the turkey to the door and opened it just far enough to shove the bird out. There was a startled yip, and then the sounds of rapid eating. "Slow down on that," he said, "because if you choke on it, I'm not going to give you the Hemlock Manuever." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 507): THINREDONE of LAB EXPERIMENTS (The Mun, mgr.) To take the throne by default, after LOSING to the outgoing Duel2Dude. If I had more pride than sense (which I do not, being a golem and not designed for that kind of idiocy), I might refuse the honor. But hey, I've got it, and I'm keeping it! Well, this turn only, since I'm off to the Isle now. Not that I'm sure I want to go to the Isle...I hear there are no good beaches there, and it's usually misty and rather clammy. I can't imagine how Debby Tonte stands it. Ah, well, I don't have to decide right this minute. Tallahasse Tina P.S. SHORTSWORD? They're kidding, right? They must be! SPY REPORT Good day, in BONSUR a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the difference, as BEACH BABES is pushed out of top team by UNDER JOLLY ROGER, who came from 3rd with a 3-1-0 this turn. And let's see, HAILSTORM fought PAULAMETTA and gained 25 points and contributed to WASTELAND II's 1-0-0. LAGUNA LIL has lost to DIKEMBE MUTUMBO, falling 11 points, while helping make BEACH BABES a 2-3-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and TALLAHASSE TINA remains BONSUR's top warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Warty Toad until they win. Maybe? He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. VIRULENT DESTINY has cause to stand tall, as they were BONSUR's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided VIRULENT DESTINY stable the most? Believe it or not, it was UNDER JOLLY ROGER. Anyone surprised? The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in BONSUR again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME YAKKO 3266 9 7 0 60 UNDER JOLLY ROGER (316) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -DEAD POET 5562 13 2 0 107 FLOWER CHILDREN (26) -GOKU 5628 8 3 0 97 WASTELAND II (267) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -CLOSTRIDIUM 2052 20 4 0 89 VIRULENT DESTINY (220) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -MICRO MIRACLE 5236 11 8 0 71 WASTELAND II (267) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SWEATY 4850 3 4 0 64 BRAIN (467) -BENDER 5516 9 3 1 61 BLADES OF ICE (188) -MY BIG TOE 5601 7 6 0 61 WASTELAND II (267) DR SEUSS 3269 8 8 0 58 UNDER JOLLY ROGER (316) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -T. First they try the old "one-two," and if that doesn't do the job, then they send YOU in, eh? Very clever. -- Laguna Lil Wakko -- And does Jolly Roger know you're creeping around under him, looking for the best place to stick the sword? If not, I shall make it my business to TELL him this. He should be WARNED. Such a jolly fellow, after all, we don't want to lose him. -- Umbrella Man P.S. What a demand on my time there is today! It's raining, you see, and however much you try to explain to people, at least, however much *I* try to explain to them, I handle BEACH umbrellas. For the sun, not the rain. Still, I 'spect they're better than nothing when water starts falling out of the sky. Dikembe Mutumbo -- Well, I'd say you're MUCH more likely to stab Roger in the belly than Wakko is, and what *I* say is, good thing! I hate people who go around being jolly at the drop of hat. Who do they think they're fooling? They're up to something behind that facade of false jollity, and I KNOW it. -- Animas Playamate, probably soggy with the rain today, unless it's highly localized, and just THINK what fun I could have if a cow carelessly stepped out into my quagmire! If you haven't ever TC'd at a tourney before, here is your chance. The contest will start Wednesday, December 1, 2004, but a chance will be given November 17 to dark arena, only, any warrior that you do not see fit to run in the contest. So now that I have your attention, here are the rules (like you didn't know they were coming sooner or later). 1. Any manager participating can enter one team, only. 2. No sandbagging whatsoever. (I will keep up with it, every turn.) 3. No teams or warriors will be allowed to run after contest starts. 4. All warriors will run until they lose three times, after three losses they are eliminated. 5. If a warrior sits out a turn, they are accounted with a loss in the contest. This is to keep warriors with winning records from sitting out until the end of the contest. 6. If a warrior is killed during the contest, the replacement cannot enter the contest. 7. If a warrior is killed, bloodfeuding is allowed, but only by a warrior that is active in the contest. 8. If a warrior is run after being eliminated, the manager is disqualified from the contest, no questions asked. 9. Challenges are legal, up or down. 10. Contest will keep going until 1 warrior is left without three losses, and that warrior, of course, is accounted the winner. 11. All managers participating will be asked to purchase a rollup certificate, to be awarded to the winners of the contest. <<<PRIZES>>> As I have already said, and according to participation, rollups will be awarded to the first and second place managers. So the majority and minority of the rollups will be determined when all are accumulated. Contest Champion--2 Faves prizes, and majority of rollup certificates Contest Runner-up--1 Faves prize, and minority of rollup certificates So once again I invite all managers old and new to participate in what should be a fierce and challenging contest. <<<REMEMBER, FIRST OFFICIAL TURN OF THE CONTEST IS DECEMBER THE FIRST, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, THE TURN BEFORE (NOVEMBER 17TH) YOU MAY DARK ARENA CHALLENGE ONLY!!! ANY WARRIOR WITH ANY FE (FIGHT EXPERIENCE) WHEN THE CONTEST STARTS WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE CONTEST.
