Andor:
Herlas glanced at the assassins out of the corner of his eye. The one in silk
had a slight smile; the one who looked like a peasant had no expression at all. Both
were staying close, right on the edge of earshot distance, as in "maybe they can hear
what we say, and maybe not." If he had been Korneth, the Zensovian would have picked
the assassins with the best hearing he could find and had them at just such a
distance. After all, they'd been trained to double as spies in the old days when the
kings of Andoria had protected their guild. Which meant no talking private with
Fireblade during the rest of this parade. And would the assassins keep with them
afterward? If Korneth's trust in him had fallen that far, Herlas figured it might be
time to put his ultimate contingency plan into motion.
He slid his glance toward the redhaired Lady Knight riding beside him. She
raised an eyebrow, then glanced toward the assassins and shook her head slightly.
What, did she think him such a fool that he would talk where he could be overheard?
He reined in annoyance. He'd been a big enough fool over this business already, why
might she not fear he would continue so? Why was it the only interesting women he'd
met could see that he was a fool and a blackguard? It was enough to depress a man.
The parade which had seemed endless looped back to the palace and ended. Lady
Knight Fireblade made another tiny, cryptic gesture and just... rode off! What did
she mean by it? Why did he care? He'd been playing out a lone hand so far, why did
he suddenly yearn for an ally? Herlas shook his head, hoping to shake out strange
notions, glanced at his assassin shadows, and rode toward the lodge on the edge of
the palace grounds where he was currently living.
***** *** ***** *** *****
Crystal Fireblade knocked on his door just after full dark. The front door, and
she knocked openly. Herlas looked past her gray-cloaked form into the rainy
darkness, then nodded. "Did anyone follow you?"
"I think not, though it's difficult to be sure." She shrugged out of the cloak
which had concealed her mail, the hood that had covered her flame-colored hair. "We
must take action of some kind, and soon," she said. "You know that." At his nod,
she went on, "Have you thought what kind of action? The lost king must be replaced,
and this Korneth of Sengir must be eliminated. But who the first, how the second?"
"Alonj of Fratsfa for the first," Herlas said. He indicated two chairs drawn up
to his fire, welcome on this wet night. The Convincians will accept him as a
legitimate ruler, the Fratsfan will accept no one else. The Baron of Ardivent is too
far away, and nobody knows which way the Clanholds of the Aruaki will go these days,
they are too disorganized within themselves."
"Raltumas?"
"Not of immediate concern. The defection of Aradi has weakened them, and they
were never as coherent as other parts of the League."
"And what of Korneth? He will block any attempt to put Alonj--or anyone other
than himself--on the throne. It is my feeling that he will be hard to dispose of."
"Mine, too. There were those assassins early today, a rather pointed message, I
thought."
"Yes. Where are they now?" Fireblade glanced around as though she expected to
see them in some corner of the room.
Herlas smiled. "Posted in quite likely places, watching intently and seeing...
very little. Bats or whatever moves around at night. If those two are all Korneth
set to watching me, as I hope because he can't have many at his call yet, then we are
safe enough for now. Later... probably not."
Crystal Fireblade frowned. "Should we leave Andor, get to where he can't spy on
us, do you think?"
The magician got up and began pacing, tapping his fingers against each other
behind his back. After several minutes, he said, "No, I don't think so. True, we're
at risk of spying if we remain here, but once we move away from the center of the
action, we would need to find spies ourselves or lose touch with what's going on. My
feeling is that we need to know what is going on here, at least until we've dealt
with Korneth."
"I take your point, but what about Alonj of Fratsfa? Not only do we--or
someone--have to tell him that he must take over governance of the League, he must be
protected. Korneth is surely as able as we are to see that Alonj is the obvious
replacement for the vanished king."
Herlas barked a laugh. "Have you met Alonj's Adantri wife? I have, and I would
not want to be an assassin trying to get past her!"

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
What?! I'm Duelmaster of this rag-tag arena? I would not at all have expected
to beat Miss Took of Ladies In Waiting; nope. She is older, more experienced, and
better (fighter and looker) than I will ever be. Hmmmmm.
Hey Took, gal! Where did you find those weapons? They ain't for us bashers at
all. And I know they were not your faves. Something going on here?
All I can add is to come and get me. I'm beatable. Just look at my record.
But be easy on me; I would like to get out of here alive.

SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, ARKERS? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, BLOOD RITES, since
SMITHSONIAN took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps
up, LADIES IN WAITING, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 5
in the rankings? Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, GENERALS,
the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see MEERKAT win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, BOILING
BLOOD beat ZILCH and ZILCH lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out
with the old, in with the new, as ROCK GLAS HUT FUN takes the Title and last week's
bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood today, but
why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, ARKERS?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. BLOOD
RITES, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care
to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like THE ANIMALS avoided them
the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, FEORDIS INK was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to SANTA MARIA of
SMITHSONIAN for challenging up by 23 to FEORDIS INK. SANTA MARIA won to get 103
points of recognition.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. And sending ZERO to the Dark Arena was supposed to be
one of your better ideas, Z GLADIATORZ? Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess
what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the ARKERS arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that
before I leave the fine city of ARKERS. I feel much better now. Paste this one in
your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Hmmmmm -- No Smithsonian ads last round? I musta blew it! Perhaps I was too
engrossed in history? -- Curator
A salute to Miss Took and The Ladies In Waiting for winning the DM crown. (Some days
we gotta hate those babes!) -- Curator
A 26-1 is both a wonderful and unacceptable record, Consag People. Wow! -- Curator
Meade -- You paleface generals are no match for redman generals, you know? --
Geronimo
Bull Frog -- A little patience pays its rewards. -- War Bond
Genghis Khan -- You and Napoleon. You and the little general. (Sigh) -- Waterloo
Conundrum -- What? I couldn't figure it out? You deceitful cad! -- Zenith
Consaguineous -- I want YOUR record, but my guys aren't helping. -- The Z Man
Hmmmm. If duplicate old ads show up for The Smithsonian, you can read them for
history's sake. (chuckle) -- Curator
What's the deal Crimson Mist and Blood Rites? A 24 point DOWNCHALLENGE? You don't
like me? That is pretty scuzzy, if I have to say so myself. -- Pearl Harbor
You are not alone, Pearl Harbor. That was quite a dishonorable, unsportsmanlike act.
I am surprised. -- Curator
Conundrum -- I figured it out. I figured it out! I did. -- Santa Maria
Caesar -- Even with all your Empire, it wasn't enough, was it? Thanks for the
challenge. I needed the win. -- Geronimo (interpreted by The Smithsonian Scribe)
Kublai Khan -- Napoleon taught you well. -- Waterloo
Concussion -- I still have a headache. -- War Bond
Greetings one and all of Arkers. May your stay be long and enjoyable. -- Curator,

A 24 point downchallenge in Arkers? How rude! What a chump that Crimson Mist is! --
The Z Man
Aeryn Sun -- That was really fun. I like for things to go that way. -- Zinger
(Meaning every word of it!)
Imber Lack -- Just the way I like it. Whammo! I needed that! -- Zenith
Miss Took -- Thanks for the chance to win the DM spot. I was very, very lucky. --

Generals -- I just want you to know that I take no specific personal pleasure in the
recent successes against you. (Although the personal ads might not read as such.
Wink!) While I do want The Smithsonians to remain successful, I also wish for you a
long, pleasurable, and successful play in Arkers, or anywhere else in Alastari. As
an obvious old-timer, if I can help in any way, please feel free to contact me.
(Diplo or wfms101@aol.com) Perhaps I should already know you, in which case my old
memory fails, but the offer is open in any case. -- Curator
Imber Lack -- First you must come out of the closet so I can get to my stunning
outfits. Of course they probably don't fit me now that you've stretched them out.
Don't get your feelings hurt, you're not fat, just not a size 4. I guess this means
I'll be the one buying the dinner. All in fun, in the sun. -- Aeryn Sun
Zenith -- Ah. I couldn't crank my head back far enough to see you up there. -- Imber
Lack
P.S. Which is odd, since I'm almost a foot taller than you.
Rock Glas Hut Fun -- I agree, but you have to be sneaky or the darned "civilized
folk" will come after you. -- Feordis Ink
Rabbit -- You animal! You've got a nasty kick. -- Morg Potts
Marshmallow -- Well, either way, I figured I had to squish you quickly. If you were
the real thing, the plant, you know, you were slimy and underfooted. And if you were
the sugary subsitute, you were bad for the teeth and digestion. So, either way, you
had to go. -- Kerbin Notts
P.S. But I didn't laugh about it. I wouldn't.
Ambitious Guard. Ah. -- Indior Landis
Pearl Harbor -- So am I! -- a Virginal (still) Concubine

*TURF WAR VI RULES*
Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns)
Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
1. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork
(DM 47) newsletter.
2. Announcements made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
Captains are responsible for:
1. Verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their
alliance;
2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
3. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
Participating managers who are not Captains must:
1. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter.
Announcement made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
a. No scores will be tabulated until a Gift Certificate is received.
No EXCEPTIONS.
b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or
aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate
disqualification from the Turf War (so be sure to take any
multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance).
d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams that do not properly
declare or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other
words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of
the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your scoring
will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before
scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift
Certificate received.
e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of
the Turf War.
f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions
will be final.
Scoring will be as follows for Fights:
Win Loss Kill Die
Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5
Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5
Bloodfeud +2 -5 +5 -10
Champion x2 x2 x2 x2
Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx
*After 2nd win, warrior scores no points for wins
Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows:
Spy Report mention (team name only) +2
Style Master +2
Duelmaster +2
Champions:
1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory.
2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
4. Champions must be in the Adepts bracket or lower on the turn they are
declared, and may NOT have gone above Adepts level at any time; this
includes teams transferred into North Fork for the Turf War.
Bloodfeuds:
1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
Tournament Considerations:
1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged.
2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) wins such status.
3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 50 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) win such status.
4. Points for TVs and TCs will be applied the Turn after RSI posts
tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the
results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North
Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams).
Special Considerations:
1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with
Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf
War with Team A.
3. There will be a maximum of seven (7) teams allowed per alliance for the
Turf War.
4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior,
without penalty.
Prizes:
The Turf War is a "winner take all" contest. All prizes and 100% of the Gift
Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance. It is the
responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will
submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the
contest for the non-Certificate prizes.
