It was one of the worst parts of the city. Calling it a slum would be an insult
to honest slums elsewhere. Lenpro's first instinct was to hustle the Flower Girl out
of there. How did she even come to know such an area? He glanced sideways at
Sizzling Sunflower. It might be better to ask how she could help finding it.
Sunflower was leaning close to a man, talking earnestly. Persuasively, because
his firm gestures of refusal were becoming uncertain. Very persuasively, because she
finally took him by the arm and brought him over to Lenpro. As he watched them
approach, the manager was impressed with how carefully the stranger did not attempt
to take any liberties with the Flower Girl.
"This is Two-finger Tom," Sunflower said. "He saw what happened, and he'll tell
you what he saw."
"Yeah, well." The man squinted at him, looked around carefully, leaned closer.
His breath was bad. "I seen some of those cat men grab a couple of decent girls.
Dragged 'em off, they did. I reckon that has something bad in mind."
Lenpro resisted the urge to step away from this case of walking halitosis. "We
can't go by what you 'reckon'," he said. "What do you know for sure?"
"That a coupla those Aruaki--" Two-finger Tom spat, narrowly missing Lenpro's
boot, "they grabbed a coupla human girls and dragged them off. Down that way," he
added, jerking his head toward the river. "No telling what they might do to the
girls. Cats. You can't trust 'em."
"Then we'd best go look for the girls." Lenpro glanced around at the crowd that
had gathered. "A group of us are going to look for the girls who were taken," he
said. "A disciplined group, not a mob."
Someone in the back of the crowd laughed. "Sounds to me like a mob--a LYNCH
mob--is what's needed here."
"Yeah, we can start by killing all those beast-men! More beast than man, THEY
are!" someone else yelled. Also someone in the back that Lenpro couldn't see. The
crowd stirred and muttered, some in agreement and some not, but the agreement seemed
to have the upper edge.
"No killing out of hand!" Lenpro shouted back. "That isn't the Andorian Way--"
The first man took up the argument again, his voice dripping contempt. "The
'Andorian Way' is just a pretty toy the elves and beast-lovers came up with to hobble
us honest humans! That 'Andorian Way' isn't worth spit!"
The crowd stirred and muttered. A lot of the mutters seemed to be in agreement
with the hecklers.
"Show yourself!" Lenpro demanded. "If you have courage in your convictions,
step forward and show your face."
The crowd stirred and a man came forward. Was thrust forward, perhaps against
his will, by the people around and behind him. He looked defiant, truculent.
He looked Karnhorn. Lenpro knew that racial stereotyping was often unfair, but
he needed to discredit this man before the crowd became a mob. "Is this the Karnhorn
party line you've been handing out?" he asked, keeping his voice calm, idly curious.
"It sounds like it, and you look like it."
More stirring in the crowd, mutters, a wave of suspicion. If there was a
lynching, this man might be first, and he could see it. "I'm no Kjarran-lover," he
growled. "Don't go putting words in my mouth!"
"Somebody's been putting them there," Lenpro said. "Somebody with his
headquarters in Zuwayza, I'd guess." He held up a hand and stopped the surge of the
crowd--for now, at least. "You didn't want us to wait for facts before lynching
Aruaki, why should we wait for facts before lynching you?"
     "I'm not--!"
Someone threw a stone, Lenpro couldn't see who. It arched up over the heads of
the crowd and struck the possible Karnhorn on the side of the head so that he
staggered and fell, blood running down the side of his face.
The crowd roared and became a mob, maddened and excited by the blood, by having
a target for hostility that had been festering. Lenpro cursed and pushed Sunflower
back. He wanted the heckler for questioning, but he wasn't going to get the man.
The mob would see to that--and maybe that mob had been triggered by his accomplice
who didn't want questions asked. He wanted to go in search of the missing girls, but
he suspected that wasn't going to happen right away, either. The witness, informant,
that Sizzling Sunflower had found was in the thick of the mob.

        + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #23 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Lenpro looked at the mob in frustration. It had surged in on the Karnhorn-
looking heckler, so that he and Sunflower were now on the outskirts. And from the
sound of it, injury was being done, to the heckler for a start, and probably to
others. His first impulse was to leap into the thick of it and try to stop things,
but that would be folly. A magician who knew just what to do might stop this many-
headed beast, but nobody else was likely to. He wasn't going to waste time trying.
"Can you find which way the kidnapped women were taken?" he asked Sunflower.
Sunflower jerked her wide-eyed attention away from the swirling violence and
nodded. "Yes." She took a deep breath. Violence in the arena, planned and agreed
to, or even violence in an alley, one-on-one, were things she understood and
accepted. This was different, and in ways she couldn't articulate yet. But two
young women kidnapped was something she could get her mind around. "He... he told
me. That man. When I first heard about the kidnapping, he told me the, well, he
said Aruaki--werecats, anyway--he said they went toward the Old Ruins."
No point in cursing the facts, but Lenpro wasn't happy about it. The Old Ruins
was the oldest part of the city, long deserted and little more than a maze of rubble.
Even vagrants didn't go there in search of shelter, they went to the New Ruins, or to
slums like this one. The Old Ruins dated back before the last Chaos War, and they
were said to be contaminated with magic-gone-bad, and haunted by vicious ghosts and
other monsters.
"Then we'd better go that way," Lenpro said. "Someone else may have noticed
something between here and there."
"Are we just going to leave this?" Sunflower waved a hand at the packed crowd
from which shouts, screams, and the too-familiar sounds of violence were rising.
"We have to, child. There's nothing we can do here to make any kind of
difference, and we'd get ourselves killed if we tried."
"But it's wrong to do nothing!"
"Yes, but it would be wrong to throw our lives away, too. Sometimes choices are
hard, and there's no right answer." Lenpro started walking.
She hurried to keep up with him. "I don't like it." Took a deep breath. "I
guess I have to live with it anyway, don't I?"

Fandil frowned at the young magician facing him. He was a Fratsfan, tall, slim,
blond, a bit of a dandy in his dress, but also very earnest. "I... we felt your
probing, sir, just before the blast and wondered whether, well--"
"The 'blast' as you call it," Fandil said, "what do you make of that?"
The young man shrugged and looked uncomfortable. "I... we aren't sure what to
'make' of it," he said. "We have debated it often--this wasn't the first. There
were two previous blasts much like it. Some believe it to be an attack, although
they disagree as to who is being attacked. Others claim it's purely defensive,
although defensive against what we don't know."
Fandil sighed. He had almost hoped this young man would be unimportant. Not a
complication. But the fellow clearly had useful data, at the least. "This 'we' you
refer to...?"
The young magician pulled himself up straighter and taller. "The Graduating
Class of 523 from the Frafrejan Academy of the Magical Arts! Ah, sir. There are six
of us now--since Larsenjo died. The first blast caught him wide open. His head
exploded." He swallowed a couple of times. "I was there. It was really horrible."
And startling, as well, Fandil thought. A most unlikely result of such a spell.
But there were aspects of that spell or blast which, looking back, he realized were
definitely not normal. Ah, make that, not in the commonly established mode of
magical practice.
"So, you have discussed and debated this matter," Fandil said. "Have you done
any research on it, reached any conclusions? By the way, what's your name?"
"Elosjon, sir. We, um, we didn't like to do any probing right after that first
blast. Because of what happened to Larsenjo. But after a little while, we did try
to backtrack the traces. It wouldn't have worked at all except for the, I don't know
what to call it, the different flavor? Of the magic in the blast."
"And what did you find?" Why had nobody taught this young man to make a proper
report? It was like pulling teeth to get information out of him.
"We did finally narrow down the origin point for it," Elosjon said. "It comes
to Fratsfa from the west, from the northern end of the Daggerspines."
"Do you blame it on the Aruaki, then?"
The young mage sighed. "We wanted to, we really did. They're so untrustworthy
it just seemed natural that it might be them. But it isn't. At least, we're pretty
sure it isn't. Not the Clanholds territory, anyway. It seems to be coming from
around Mountain Home somewhere."
"Didn't there used to be some kind of independent duchy around Mountain Home?"
Lady Fern asked. "I seem to remember hearing that the last duke fought the formation
of the Andorian League bitterly, and lost, leaving the line vacant."
"I don't know about the title," Elosjon said, "but there was a son, very young
then, and he'd only be just beginning to be old if he's still alive. They were pure
Fratsfan, and naturally long-lived. My grandfather told me about him. The boy went
off somewhere to study magic and nothing's been heard about him since."
"Meaning there could be a fully mature magician in Mountain Home who might be
holding a grudge against the Andorian League," Fandil said. "An unpleasant thought,
but still, valuable information. I was going to go to Andor, but perhaps I should go
to Mountain Home first...."

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Coming up with
a solid 3-2-0 outing, MIDDLE WAY 11 has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Z
GLADIATORZ is no joke as it posted a 3-0-0 week advancing from 3rd place to 3rd
place. Hey everybody, watch out for ZENITH, who flew up 17 points in the rankings
after mashing CONUNDRUM like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. Ya know, some days
it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. CONUNDRUM was defeated by ZENITH and drops
9 points. Well, everybody's pal CONCUSSION moved his record to 9-2-0 by defeating
EMM in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 8 recognition points. Advice to
bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid CONSANGUINEOUS, please raise you
hand. Wow. Does ARKERS really have that many liars? For those of you who like
math, try this one: CONSANGUINEOUS + Weapons That go Boom = BONDAGE + Avoid City.
Well just about everybody wants a piece of FEORDIS INK, who was this week's most
challenged warrior. QUEUE of BONDAGE had better have a good reason for challenging
down 11 points in a challenge which he lost. I thought QUEUE showed great skill and
promise when he was bested by CONSTERNATION. All right, so I slept through it! Big
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time
is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
Well, there's the manager of the ARKERS giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Well, there goes another Spy Report.
Good luck in next week's fights. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can
pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

Congratulations to Concussion, the really talented and fierce young Duelmaster.
Let's see what kind of DM Column "Killer" can write. -- Curator

Great DM Column, Goldeneyes. Can Concussion do as well? -- Curator

Kerbin -- all those skills and experience and me just a kid? No wonder Waterloo was
such a debacle. -- Waterloo

Ambitious Guard -- I like you better than mannequin's little meanies! -- Alamo
(Remember The)

Kik Baket -- I was lucky. Not all of my weapons were parked where they could be
decimated. -- Pearl Harbor

Congrats to Goldeneye, the only Arker with any wins at The Face. -- Curator

Confidence -- You don't leave an opponent with any, do you? -- War Bond

Well, I guess a 2-2 is okay once in a while, but you Zs better get your rumpus in
gear! -- The Z Man

What, you think Arkers is a rumpus room?

Emm -- I should have won that, but instead, I walked away with ... -- Zilch

Concussion -- You were my better and you deserved the win and the title. Salute. --

Pussy Galore -- Thanks for initiating the action. I will take all I can get! --

Ayannah Wulf -- That worked out pretty well if I have to say so myself. (wink) --

Nice team, Consanguineous. Nice Team! -- The Z Man

Zenith -- OUCH! Maybe not such a good idea that challenge eh!! -- Pussy G

Zilch -- I thought I'd try something new. The jury's out on its effectiveness, but
certainly worth further investigation!! -- Emm

Me Cheat U Lose -- Cheats never prosper... well... not always. ;-) Luck for the
future -- Goldeneye

Jos Gatecrusher -- It's my party,and you're NOT crashing it!! -- Rosa K

Boiling Blood (RIP) -- Eeek! Not again... *sigh*... I seem to be altogether too
handy at ending opponent careers... Apologies... I await your team's revenge, but
please be quick, we may only be here 1 more turn! -- Queue

Zither -- Very well done! Not quite the ending I had expected, though. I'd like to
try that again, sometime. -- Ayannah Wulf

Norm Quesha -- Worst. Duel. Ever. -- Phalene

Rosa Klebb -- Fought like a ture Dwarven woman! (Erm, without the beard. I think.)
-- Jos Gatecrasher

How come everyone "Addax" me all the time? -sigh- -- Albrecht Wulf

     Lack of imagination?

Conundrum -- Whew, sorry, I haven't a clue. -- Feordis Ink
P.S. And that was a darned pointed question you were asking.

Consternation -- What the heck? -- Indior Landis
P.S. At least you guys are good for a quip.

Waterloo -- If my memory serves me correctly, and I wouldn't count on it doing so,
it's the sunken roads you need to watch out for. -- Kerbin Notts
P.S. I suppose a boat would help.

Phalene -- Well, damn. Here I thought, gosh, I'm going to meet a woman! And then
you turned out to be significantly taller than I am, and I've always been told that
women don't go for shorter men. It's the pits. -- Norm Quesha

We salute all who participated in the tourney. -- Jorja and the Middle Way
