South of Andor:

Outcast Orchid looked at her companion. He had given his name as though it
should mean something to her, but she'd never heard of him. "Herlas of Zensu?"
"Yes, to my shame, I am."
She shook her head. "That doesn't mean a thing to me, but I can tell you that
as far as I'm concerned, saving my life makes up for a lot." She looked ahead. The
farm track they were following wandered into a field and stopped. "Where do we go
from here? How long before we can get back on the main roads? I don't like being
"We aren't lost," Herlas said. "I know where we are, and how to get to Fratsfa
from here--if the Chaos monsters haven't gotten there ahead of us." He guided her to
the left, into an overgrown woodlot. "If they have... no reason to go there at all.
Or not to, of course."
"Well, at least you aren't suggesting that we flee Andoria to escape the
"What would be the point? Once they've conquered Andoria, which is their goal,
I think, they will go on to the rest of Alastari, and from there the rest of Ghea."
"Lady Greywand might have something to say about that."
"Or she might not. She's insane, after all."
The woodlot was small, and on the other side of it was another overgrown track.
"How can you say that?" Orchid demanded, pulling a twig from her hair.
"Based on the available evidence," Herlas answered quietly, "but let's not go
into that now." He gestured slightly, indicating something ahead of them. "We're
about to have trouble."
Orchid looked. One of the monsters was waiting in the middle of the field. She
drew her sword, unwilling to give up without a fight. A limb of the thing
transformed into a sort of blade in response. She foresaw difficulty with an
opponent who could change forms at will.
Beside her, heat and flickering lights and a smell of ozone as her companion
cast a spell. Herlas said, "I think I can hold it to one shape, but be quick."
She nodded and danced forward, her sword beginning to trace the dangerous
patterns of her style. Sunlight flared along the edge of the blade, clean as
morning, and the monster shied back. She whirled past it, moving constantly without
pause, slicing and dicing methodically. Ichor flowed thickly.
It made a sound. Why should a Chaos monster that looked a little bit like a
person on a horse make a sound like wind chimes and sea gulls? Well, why not, it was
chaos, right? Anything goes, that's what chaos was all about. Except that she got
the feeling it was upset. Good! It should BE upset. Coming here and trying to take
over HER world--the very idea! She spun back twoard it, she had a second sword now
in her other hand, didn't know where she'd gotten it, but that didn't matter. She
hit it like a veritable wall of blades, and every gobbet of flesh she hacked off
burst into flames before it could hit the ground and was destroyed.
     Destroyed utterly.

West of Fratsfa:

     "Now what?" Elosjon asked.
"Now we make a plan," Fandil said. "I suppose you don't know anything about the
castle, or any more about the magician there except that he's probably the son of the
last lord of Mountain Home and went somewhere far away to study?"
     Elosjon shook his head.
"Not a problem, we can work with what we've got already," Fandil said, patting
his shoulder. "And really, the hint of Chaos Magic is enough." The old mage's face
set grimly and suddenly looked a lot older than seemed possible. "He's been studying
Folstrom materials, even if he didn't find the Folstrom themselves to study with."
Folstrom! Elosjon shuddered. The Folstrom, who had nearly destroyed Alastari
once--with Chaos Magic--were the monsters who lurked at the back of every
Alastarian's mind, the ultimate image of evil and depravity, never to be forgiven.
How could anyone seek out their learning? He asked the question aloud.
"Some people would go into the very heart of wickedness in search of power, and
vengeance is a strong motive, too," Fandil said. He sighed and sat down on a tree
root. "He will not be easy to defeat, but we have learned a few things since the
Folstrom were driven away. Sit down, boy, so I don't have to strain my neck talking
to you. I am going to tell you spells that you will never, on pain of worse than
death, repeat, nor even use if it isn't the most desperate last chance."
"Why?" Elsojon slid down to sit beside him. "Why keep them secret, why not use
them, why tell me at all?"
"Because these spells are as dangerous in their way as Chaos Magic, because
there is a good chance that using them will destroy you, and because someone has to
know them and be ready to use them as the final reserve. This is a battle to death
and beyond, young man, and we must make what preparations we can."
The young mage took a deep breath, rubbed his suddenly-sweating hands down his
robe, and nodded. "Okay."
Fandil leaned closer to him, dropping his voice to a near whisper, and began to
describe spells.
                         ***** *** ***** *** *****
Elosjon blinked, wondering where the day had gone. How could it be evening
already? Or maybe it was evening of the next day, or even two or three days later--
he felt stuffed with arcane knowledge, and it might have taken a long time to pour
all that into him. He was afraid to move suddenly lest all that magic slosh around
and confuse the spells. Or spill out uncontrolled. He couldn't say he'd LEARNED
them, but he was full of them as a bottle might be full of wine. He understood
Fandil's warnings now. He would rather carry live coals in his bare hands than the
spells now lodged in his mind. Still, it was his job to do. Fandil, a mage with a
towering reputation, was trusting him to do it.
He looked at Fandil, sitting beside him. "Now what?"
"Now we sleep, because darkness favors our Enemy, and we cannot give him that
advantage. And because we need sleep if we are to be at our best."

The portal was just a portal and presented no bar to their passage. Sizzling
Sunflower blinked around at the run-down section of the city to which they had
returned. It seemed unexpectedly ordinary. Orderly, despite the litter. The
buildings were all... square, or at least rectangular, all stone-colored, or brick.
The people all human. She shook her head. "I hadn't realized that things were so
conservative," she muttered.
"Predictable," Lenpro agreed. "Just as well. Humans were not meant to live in
"There were people back there--" She turned back toward the portal, but there
was nothing to see now. Just a street, cracked pavement, grubby house-fronts,
drooping trees.
"People," the manager admitted, "but not humans. And I would guess not for
long. That pocket universe is inherently unstable. But it may not be the only one
of its kind, and I can't believe that it's good for our universe to have those
clustered on it like leeches, so we'd better find my brother and tell him about it.
Fandil will know what to do with a magical problem of that kind."
"I guess. But it was an interesting place to visit, if you don't have to live
there." She started along the street in what she figured was a westerly direction,
toward the better part of the city. After a moment, she added, "There was a mob here
when we went in. I kind of thought they'd wait."
Lenpro glanced up at the sky. "It's late morning now, and we went through the
portal in the afternoon. So it's been nearly a day, at the least. Most mobs don't
have that much patience."
"That long? It didn't seem more than an hour or two that we were in there!"
"Some day when you have a week to spare, ask Fandil to explain 'temporal
discontinuity' and 'meta-subjective time' to you. We're probably lucky--I hope we're
lucky--we didn't get back BEFORE we left."

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, ARKERS? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, CONSANGUINEOUS, since Z
GLADIATORZ took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps
up, MIDDLE WAY 11, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in
the rankings? Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see D.D. EISENHOWER win a
fight and gain 15 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, D.D. EISENHOWER beat NORM QUESHA and
NORM QUESHA lost 8 points. You're breakin' my heart. CONSTERNATION Dark Arena
Challenged DARK CHAMPION for ARKERS' Title this turn, and guess what happened? And
if variety is the spice of life, ARKERS may be getting bland, as CONSTERNATION stays
top dog in the city. The Warty Toad, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries.
Where do they get this stuff? From ARKERS' trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. ARKERS, I am losing what little hope I had in you.
HEAVEN'S SHADOW the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And
it looks like Z GLADIATORZ avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be
losers, if you ask me. Hmph. KERBIN NOTTS was challenged more times this turn than
the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a
little credit to JACKSON of GENERALS for challenging up by 23 to CONFESSION. JACKSON
won to get 53 points of recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. CONSANGUINEOUS has cause to pause today,
as CONSTERNATION was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of
moods, I'll wager. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ARKERS. I feel much better now. Glad to see the back of
this place-- Snide Clemens

About time we got Consternation out of here! Let's get rid of some more Cs! Why,
they don't even write Duelmaster columns. Goldbricks! -- The Z Man

I would say congratulations to Consanguineous, bit it is getting too complicated. --
The Z man

Norm Q -- Some days I can hit all the high notes. This was one! -- Zither

Kotter -- Tsk. Tsk! You let a thin little blossom like me defeat you? My, my. --

Stray Catman? I like the win, but.... -- Zephyr

Congratulations to the Consags for Lord Protector Consternation. Well done. --

Meade -- Well, I have to win one skirmish before the big one, don't I? -- Alamo

Hanna Keene -- I was always known for liking the ladies and winning a few battles. --
D. D. Eisenhower

Downtime -- I, too, am in fetters and in the king's dungeon. Like the Z Man has
suggested, get rid of HW and FR. Duel2 costs less in the long walk. -- Sir

Respectfully, different people enjoy different types of games. While Duel2 does
have the advantage that you can skip turns with no consequence (in HW/FR you
will often ruin your position if you miss turns), a standby position for a small
kingdom in Hyborian War is only $4.50, which is less than the cost of one
warrior in DM, much less the cost for a full team. FR can get more expensive,
granted. But cost is not the prime consideration; most importantly, you should
play the type of game you enjoy and are challenged by. We have a lot of
customers who just don't get DM, but they love the challenge of military
strategy games like FR and HW. Everyone is different. -- The Typist

D.D. Eisenhower -- Your luck will run aground. -- Korn

Hanna Keene -- Not bad for an old rocker, wouldn't you say? -- Motor Head

Kotter Nahl -- Sorry, but I was out of ground "Pig" and you just made my mouth water.
-- Saliva

Consternation -- You have a great skill for making your namesake feeling obvious. --
Kerbin Notts

Confidence -- I could use some of that. But you don't seem to have the technique for
imparting it that your teammate does for handing out consternation. -- Indior Landis

Zither -- No two ways about it, I just can't carry a tune, not even in a basket. --
Norm Quesha

D.D. Eisenhower -- I expected better from you, sir. I will NOT come to Camp David
with you. -- Hanna Keene

Ziggy -- You were a cute little thing... right up till you tried to cut me off at the
knees. -- Kotter Nahl

Our congratulations to Consternation. -- Jorja and the Middle Way
