"Almost home, and I am *so* glad--I really need a bath--all this lying around in ditches to hide just isn't--" "We cannot enter the city openly," Herlas said. He sound scandalized by the very idea. "I doubt that I would be given free passage, and even if I were, you should not be seen with someone having such a dark reputation--" "Oh, pooh! *I* never heard of you, and probably most people haven't, and besides, what makes you think I care?" She squinted at him and opened her mouth to make another comment, then closed it with the observation unspoken. Maybe he did secretly enjoy his reputation as being a "bad boy of magic," but there was no need to force him to admit it. Men were silly about things like that. "I know the back- streets really well," she said. "And we're dirty enough no one will want to get close and find out more." She could see him wanting to argue and was glad when he changed his mind and just followed her. She wove through narrow streets, narrower alleys, avoiding people--who were avoiding them, so it was easy--and picking up familiar landmarks. Getting close to the Flower Shoppe. Sizzling Sunflower and the manager Lenpro came into sight, almost running, heading for the same goal. Orchid looked at her teammate and blinked. To Herlas, she said, "Does it seem to you that Sunflower is... glowing?" He hesitated. "She is certainly... radiant," he answered finally. "You mean that isn't normal for her?" "Maybe it's just the light." The two pairs came together at the back door to the complex of buildings that formed the Flower Shoppe. Orchid and Sunflower hugged each other, babbling about "amazing things to report." Lenpro looked at Herlas and raised an eyebrow, then gestured for the younger man to precede him into the building. Going first and having people with unknown intentions at his back didn't appeal, but Herlas reminded himself... well, he was sure there were extenuating circumstances, but he'd think about them later. Simply getting out of sight of the hordes of ill-wishers produced by his imagination--they were bound to show up any minute now--was good enough for now. He went in. Lady Fern hustled them into her private quarters (leaving a full house of Flower Girls crowding the nearest rooms eager for news). She pushed them into chairs, waved at a tray with bottles and glasses and plates of snacks, and sat down herself. On the edge of her chair. "What has been HAPPENING?" she demanded. "You've been gone for DAYS--" "Days? Really days?" Sunflower asked. "It didn't feel like that long--" "A pocket universe," Lenpro said. "Not particularly dangerous to Alastari in itself, so far as I can tell, but it might indicate problems to come. What if more of them form? We should probably do something about it. Where's Fandil? He'll know whether we should worry." He waved to the others for their report. "There was a golem in Andor," Orchid said, "and it was killed by gladiators, and then the gladiators were killed by a mob and it probably isn't safe to be a gladiator around there right now. And a chaos monster on the road when we were getting away." "A Lord Korneth who describes himself as being 'from Sengir', a place I have never heard of, is in control of Andor," Herlas added. "Most of the bureaucrats support him, though whether that is from conviction or to safeguard their jobs I don't know. A golem was made to look like the king--I did the illusions--supposedly to allay worry about him. No one knows exactly what happened to the king, mind you, but the people most likely to know anything at all believe that he is gone--wherever and however--for good. The later stuff, killing the golem and giving gladiators a bad name, increasing the size of the standing army, vilifying elves and Aruaki," he hesitated and shrugged. "I believe that Korneth is using all this to distract or pacify the general population while he takes complete power." "And the chaos monsters!" Orchid reminded him. "Somebody sent real chaos monsters to chase us when we left Andor. We need to tell Fandil about them, he'll know what to do." "I'm sure he will," Fern said. She looked suddenly older. "But Fandil is not here. He left days ago to track down a magician in the mountains, and we have heard nothing since Ravishing Redbud, who accompanied him part of the way, returned." In the mountains west of Fratsfa: The young mage Elosjon wiped sweat from his face. Though the morning was cold, they had been walking and climbing since first light, and that was hot work. For him, anyway; his studies had not included anything more physical than carrying a book from shelf to table or lifting a wand. Fandil seemed to be doing fine. Pride could only do so much. Elosjon gasped, "Can we stop for a few minutes?" Fandil glanced around and gestured toward an outcropping with two trees which would shield them from anyone ahead. "Surely, and next time don't wait till you're about to fall down to ask." "I wasn't sure it was okay to talk," Elosjon muttered. "I doubt that will make any difference," the older mage said, and smiled. "We aren't exactly walking silently, you know." He paused and cocked his head sideways as if listening to something he alone could hear. "I don't think anyone--the mage, at least--is paying attention. The watchdogs, though... might be different." Elosjon shivered, wishing that his imagination didn't paint those possible watchdogs in such demonic colors. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #40 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + In the mountains west of Fratsfa: After a while, maybe half an hour, Fandil stood. Elosjon shivered again. This was it. Ultimate battle, powerful enemy, no quarter. They were probably going to die. HE was probably going to die. As he stood and tried automatically to brush the dirt off his robe, he found himself thinking that it was a shame he hadn't ever visited the Flower Shoppe in Fratsfa for its primary purpose. Some magicians claimed that doing so would impair the vital forces, but others claimed it was energizing. He wished now that he had take the time to formulate his own opinion and test it. Well, too late for that, but if he DID by some chance survive, he would-- He remembered Ravishing Redbud who had started out with them, and blushed. But if he survived, he WOULD. With her. Fandil glanced at him and said, "Remember, you are present as a back-up. Not to throw yourself into the forefront of the battle and get killed for nothing, but to hold ready for that instant when just a little extra power on my side will tip the scales." Elosjon opened his mouth to protest what he saw as coddling, but the older mage stopped him with a glance. "No, I'm not slighting your ability, my young colleague. It isn't ability that you lack, but simple experience. Some things only come with long practice, and the timing that is critical in a magical battle, or any other kind of battle, is one of them. I'm not giving you the 'easy' job, either. When your assistance is needed, it will be needed desperately, and you will have to be ready to give without hesitation or limit." The older man's beard twitched in what might have been a smile. "And if any of the watchdogs show up while I'm busy, I trust you will deal with them." Fratsfa: "What I want to know," Sunflower said, "is what this Korneth guy thinks he's going to get out of it all." "Power," Herlas said. "A crown." "Yes, but how? Even if the old king is gone for good, how does all this..." she stirred her hand around as though mixing a pot of trouble, "how does it make HIM into the new king?" "That's how a man becomes a king," Lady Fern said. "By seizing a chance when it comes along--and often enough by making the chance in the first place. He will argue that there is no one else at hand who can do what needs to be done, and point to the 'Karnhorn Menace' or some other made-up danger and say that no time can be lost, the Andorian League--" "He'll make it a kingdom, not a league," Herlas put in. She nodded. "That seems a logical step for him. That Andoria needs a strong hand on the reins now of all times. None of the other 'lesser' rulers will do: the Baron of Ardivent is too little known to the population as a whole, and he's an elf, the leaders of the Clanholds are Aruaki, the Thane of Convincia is too old, the Raltumans are out of the question since Aradi's defection--" "What about Emperor Alonj?" Orchid asked. "Easily discredited. He used to seem half-mad, though he wasn't, and many people will believe that he really is." Fern snorted. "His wife may have something to say about that, true, but Alonj doesn't want to rule Andoria, and she may not push him into something he doesn't want." "He's right about one thing," Lenpro said. "Somebody has to take control." "Why?" Herlas asked. "Why not go back to being independent units: Ardivent and Fratsfa, the Clanholds, Convincia, and Raltumas. It isn't like the League is some ancient tradition, or the separate parts will turn on each other without the framework of the League to make them work together." Lenpro and Fern spoke together: "No." Fern gestured for Lenpro to carry on with the explanation. "Only in a perfect world will people work together without rules and leaders, and this is not a perfect world. People--petty nobles, great nobles, military leaders, wealthy merchants, ambitious priests--they'll see a power vacuum and try to step in to fill it. There will be fighting, and sooner or later a union again. We should bypass that if we can: Better a bad ruler than no ruler." "Not always," Lady Fern said. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 316): CONFIDENCE of CONSANGUINEOUS (Mannequin, mgr.) SPY REPORT Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARKERS this turn, and let's start with a look at some of the teams. GENERALS stable has parlayed this turn's 2-3-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 4th place. Good work, guys! And let's see, DEAD LEE fought JACKSON and gained 14 points and contributed to YOU PAY I SLAY's 2-1-0. JACKSON has lost to DEAD LEE, falling 11 points, while helping make GENERALS a 2-3-0 turn. Well done, ARKERS, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps CONFIDENCE is not as thrilled, being challenged 2 times. WAR BOND challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone CONSANGUINEOUS' warrior. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and CONFIDENCE remains ARKERS' top warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Welcome Wench until they win. Maybe? He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. MIDDLE WAY 11 has cause to stand tall, as they were ARKERS' most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided MIDDLE WAY 11 stable the most? Believe it or not, it was SMITHSONIAN. Anyone surprised? MOTOR HEAD from HEAD BANGERS took a risk this turn by bravely challenging up 27 points in a challenge against CONFESSION. Even though MOTOR HEAD lost the fight, he at least came away with a gain of 33 points for challenging on of CONSANGUINEOUS. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. YOU PAY I SLAY made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as they sent URA GONER, with a record of 5-6-0, to URA GONER death. Farewell, hers. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. I like this place, ARKERS, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy.
