Carefully not thinking what that next form might be, lest he give it a clue against him. Nothing appeared. Was it through? Surely not! A shimmer in the air and a twist of iris-colored smoke. One of the sharps in his epsilon shield shrieked and went flat. The orthodox response to that called for blank verse in a blue-and-magenta palette, which was a good argument for taking a different direction. And fast, his opponent was too good--and too dangerous--for "stop and think." Acting on an instinct he didn't question, Fandil shifted to a ballad form in earth tones, with a hint of paprika wave at the end. The little cloud of smoke flashed red, flashed black, and fell in on itself, leaving a robed and hooded figure in its place. Not the demon, there was no sulfur in its signature. The mage, his opponent. Very tall, very thin, stiff and unmoving once it appeared. The sigil over its heart (if it was put together in human pattern) was Folstrom. "Begone," the hooded mage intoned. "You interfere with my necessary work! The ways must be opened for the Masters to return--" "The Folstrom? I don't think so," Fandil snapped. "The Masters will know how to deal with the prancing elves and the Aruaki beasts--" "I seem to recall that the Folstrom idea of good government and cultural stability was to have everyone submissive to them, and that more than half the population of Alastari at that time died in their Chaos Games." "They brought order and unity!" the mage shrieked. "And I have seen the Chaos Games, and they are a performance of beauty, not like the bloody holocaust of the arena system. The Folstrom understand the order that lies in the heart of Chaos--" "And that has driven them mad," Fandil said. "The Folstrom are insane." "No!" Where the mage had stood was now a shaft of intensely violet light. Fandil could feel the power of it burning against his shield, but he had expected this, or something like it. He was ready. His will reached down through his feet to grip the bedrock of the mountain top, up through his raised hands into the clouds that boiled black overhead. He seized the lighting and pulled it down onto his enemy. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #44 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Fratsfa: "So," Lenpro said, "we have two basic--linked but distinct--problems. The chaotic magic, and the civil war. Is that correct?" Lady Fern nodded. "Over-simplified, but correct." "And Fandil is going to have to be the one to deal with the magic--" "I have heard of the mage Fandil, of course," Herlas cut in, "and I would guess he has as good a chance as any and better than most, but... will he do it? Will he do it in TIME?" "He's working on it now," Fern said. The younger man blinked and looked around the room blankly. "Already? But how did he know?" Fern laughed. "That is a question I prefer not to ask my brother, along with 'what are you doing?'. It is sufficient to know that he is working on it." She sat even straighter in her chair. "Your obvious intention, Lenpro, is to state that we here in this room must begin to deal with the civil war side of the problem." "Preferably before it becomes an outright civil war," the manager from Iaye said. "At the moment, it's more of a palace coup. If we can stop it now--" "Ah..." Herlas shifted a little in his chair, "that may not be possible. Cutting it off before it becomes an outright civil war. The tensions and irritations that Korneth has been working with are real enough, and by now they're probably-- almost certainly--inflamed enough that bringing them to a halt short of violence is.... I don't think it can be done." "Just what, exactly, 'tensions and irritations' are you talking about?" Lenpro scowled. "The Andorian League is probably the best place to live in all Alastari--" Herlas sighed, looked at Outcast Orchid almost helplessly for a moment, then squared his shoulders. Definitely a 'you aren't going to like this' gesture. "Korneth may have come out of nowhere I've ever heard of, but he gained local support quickly. Very quickly--and more than you might think, especially in Convincia. The Great Thane has been... cool, but he hasn't made any effort to stop the drift of many of his lesser thanes into the..." a vague gesture, of one groping for words, "the isolationist camp, I might call it. And at a lower level still, among the ordinary people, farmers, small merchants, the foundation of Convincian strength, there's a lot of resentment against, well, the Aruaki first. They don't like how powerful the Aruaki are in the League. They don't like Aruaki wanting to marry their sons and daughters and 'taint' their own family bloodlines. They just--" "They don't like the Aruaki," Fern finished. She looked thoughtful and glanced at Lenpro. "What has been your experience on Iaye? It is officially under the government of the Aruaki Clanhold, is it not?" "Officially... sort of." Lenpro got up and started walking around the room, finding an outlet for his own irritation in the activity. With obvious reluctance, he said, "We don't see many of the Aruaki on Iaye, and if some official were to come and try to give orders... they probably wouldn't be well received. But that's a long way from civil war!" "It's the soil that a civil war can grow in," Fern said. "The werefolk are not welcomed with open arms here in Fratsfa, either, especially since the plague. Some of the plague-driven shape-changes and the associated personality shifts were," she sighed, "frankly disastrous. But it isn't the fault of the Aruaki themselves!" "It doesn't need to be," Sizzling Sunflower cut in. "It isn't the fault of the river if someone's house gets flooded, but no intelligent person builds too close to it even so." "Yes, exactly so." Herlas nodded. "Even people who aren't hostile to the Aruaki have taken to avoiding them--" "We don't see it in the arenas," Lenpro said. "Yes, well, they're avoiding the gladiators, too, I bet," Orchid said. "Nobody was giving gladiators the benefit of the doubt up in Andor just recently." "There's also hostility toward gladiators," Herlas admitted. "Many people see them as tools of the Grey Wand, which they fear outright. And, again, they resent the effect of the arenas on their sons and daughters. That it draws them away from what their parents consider the proper life and duties--" "Immortality--" "A lot of jealousy, huh?" Orchid asked. Herlas nodded again. "A lot of people have trouble accepting the typical elvish lifespan, but at least elves can be killed. Add in the guarantee of resurrection... jealousy, resentment, even religious outrage. There was a lot of dissatisfaction that Korneth could strike a match to." "It's all well and good to SAY these things," Orchid growled, taking her turn to stamp up and down the room. "But what can we DO about them? The Aruaki aren't going to go away. The arenas aren't going to go away. The elves, and the Grey Wand, aren't going to go away. All this stuff you're SAYING isn't telling us what we can DO." Herlas smiled, though there was little amusement in the expression. "Korneth's solution is to kill or 'cast out' the Aruaki--send them back to Ratan, apparently. Get rid of the arena system, kill Lord Protectors whenever they turn up and destroy the bodies so that they can't be resurrected, and direct the energies of the remaining Andorians toward a war with the Karnhorn Empire." "Scapegoats," Lady Fern said. Her expression suggested that if she wasn't a lady, she'd spit on the floor. "Cut off Korneth's legitimacy by providing a ruler that all can accept as--" "But can 'all' accept Alonj?" Orchid asked. "As an alternative to a civil war, yes, I think so. If we get the message on that out before emotions become so inflamed that nobody wants a reasonable alternative to civil war. But these irritations... they won't go away, because they do have a real foundation," Lenpro nodded acknowledgement at the Zensovian mage, "but they've become exaggerated. Inflamed," he repeated, liking the word. "So we need anti-inflammatories." Fern nodded. "It won't be easy, but--" "Maybe if the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors help out people, all kinds of people--the ordinary ones you were talking about," Sunflower began. "No." Fern and Lenpro spoke together, and immediately. Lenpro gestured for his sister to continue. "If we add the burden of gratitude to the resentments already festering, it will make things worse. No, better if we find some way for the ordinary mortal human Andorians to help out the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors, that might do better." Sizzling Sunflower looked dubious, but she shrugged and sat back, accepting her manager's perception as being wiser than her own. "How, then?" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Larkin here once again, with more interviews from the tourney. This time I'm talking to a new manager, so new he doesn't even have a manager name. "Sir... what would you like me to call you, by the way?" "Why do you have to call me anything? I don't understand why you want to interview me. There are lots of great managers here who could probably tell you stuff--" "I'm looking for a new perspective, the point of view of someone who is just starting out with the gladiatorial games." "Oh. Well, I guess that would be me." "Absolutely right! Tell me, what do you think of the tourney? This is your first, right?" "Right, my first," the young man agreed. "And it's GREAT! Everyone is just great here! I mean, most of these managers, they're, like, legends, you know? Everybody's heard of them, and they have stables of HUNDREDS of gladiators, and they've been polishing their tricks for YEARS, and I didn't figure I had much of a chance, you know?" "The popular view is that no matter how much you know, the arena can always throw a surprise at you--" "Yeah, yeah, I've heard that. I don't know if I believe it, but I've heard it. But that isn't the best thing about this tourney. The best thing is that everyone here has been GREAT. Or else I didn't meet them--the ones that might not have been. But I think I met just about everyone, and--" "And they were great. I'm glad. But perhaps you could tell our readers a little more, maybe tell them how these experienced managers were great to you?" "Well, yeah, okay. It's that everyone was so friendly and helpful, see? The ENTIRE Consortium talked to me about warrior design, for instance. I learned a lot there. And, well, there was Mannequin, and The Greek Guy, and I actually met Manager, too! And they were all really helpful. Advice, you know, and charts, and all that stuff that was so confusing. It was just the best experience! I'm going to do it again, for sure!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 318): WAR BOND of SMITHSONIAN (Curator, mgr.) Curator wants to know why a team member has to write a DM column after the team went 1-1-0-1? After some other general assassinated D.D. Eisenhower? He seems pretty choked up about it. Oh, my! I, on the other hand, think winning the Duelmaster Crown is a great honor for the team, and while it may not make up for the loss of a fine warrior and future president, it helps. So, I am writing. At the moment, there are only three of us Smithsonians--Me, War Bond, Geronimo, and Alamo. Curator hired a recruit at The Face in Tempe, but, not surprisingly, he cannot remember the guy's name, type, or whatever. And the papers for the replacement for Eisenhower have not yet arrived. So we fight short on numbers. I shall do my best to retain the title in this tumultuous time for Smithsonians. I will challenge carefully and with lengthy strategic thought. Hopefully I will also sell a few war bonds in the process. I leave you with this thought ..... War is hell. War Bond, Duelmaster SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last week's fights. Coming up with a solid 3-1-0 outing, MIDDLE WAY 11 has advanced 3 places in the rankings. It looks like the guys(?) at SMITHSONIAN had a good week as they went 3-1-0 to put them in 3rd place. I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for SOUL CATCHER, who flew up 19 points in the rankings after mashing ROMMEL like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. And falling like a basher in the top ten was KOTTER NAHL, who dropped 8 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with ZEPHYR. CONFIDENCE got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No doubt he was more than anxious to kick WAR BOND's tail out of the throne! Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was CONSANGUINEOUS' CONFIDENCE, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by WAR BOND. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARKERS arena. Did you hear that GENERALS was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of GENERALS' warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch Z GLADIATORZ's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from GENERALS. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, DEAD LEE would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had KORN challenge up 31 points in the rankings to take on ALAMO? A Carrion Bird Sellout: KORN 3-6-0 fights ALAMO 8-3-0. (BYOB) In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, BAT OF LASHES went after NORM QUESHA, who was higher by 25 points. Well, when the dust settled, BAT OF LASHES was beat by NORM QUESHA. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Big deal, so IMA SLAYER got mashed in the Dark Arena. With hers face she was more at home with the trolls than with us. (Waka waka). IMA SLAYER says to hers dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog says 'STONE GOLEM'. So the gal dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. Yes, and another newbie bites the dust as ZIGGY goes down under the sword of AMBITIOUS GUARD. Thanks to this, AMBITIOUS GUARD now has 40 recognition points. Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights.
