                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

The tavern was full tonight. Patrons drank, sang, and talked about the games
earlier that day. Shikari sat across the table looking admiringly at Ocean. Since
Shikari signed onto the Chosen stable, she has followed Ocean around like a lost pup.
The young girl admired her. The way a younger sister admires her older sibling.
Shikari sat with her chair turned around the wrong way, her folded arms resting on
the back of it. Shikari tended to dress very tom boyish. Black boots covered her
feet and stopped at her knee. She also wore a pair of green cotton britches. Her
white blouse was buttoned up. The starched collar lightly lay on her shoulder.
Shikari's head rested on her folded arms. Her curly black hair was worn in a
ponytail. Her gray eyes sparkled as Ocean continued to tell her tales of her travels
to Arkers.

Many years ago, after the Chosen had disbanded, Ocean headed to Monuntial to
find work as a gladiator. The games weren't the same in the old Freeblades city.
She soon lost interest in it. Fortune was with her because that stable disbanded as
well. The rest of her many years were filled with travel and other adventures. Most
grew bored with Ocean's tales. Some even would say that they were lies. But not
Shikari. She believed. After every training session, or after dinner, she would
seek Ocean out and ask more questions about her life.
Ocean sat with her legs propped up in an empty chair. She wore a black pair of
boots and white cotton pants. Her blue shirt was opened to the third button. There
was just a hint of her small breast showing from the opening. Random male patrons
wandered past the tables more than once. It is obvious they aren't interested in
Ocean's story. Ocean knew what was going on and she loved the attention. This was a
good thing. The blonde woman had never had a lack of attention from men. She
picked up her glass of red wine and sipped before she continued taking to Shikari.
As a matter of fact, this third glass of wine was purchased by the third different
man in the room. Each man received a smile from her red painted lips and a nod of
thanks. Unfortunately, that is all that Ocean was willing to give any of them
tonight.
The door to the tavern opened and a gust of winter air washed in, soon followed
by a large bald man wearing a black over coat. The black coat went down to his calf.
He wore black boots, blue denim britches, and a black shirt. He shut the door behind
himself and headed to the table that Shikari and Ocean occupied.
"Ladies." He said and waved the waitress over for a pint of ale.
     "Hello, boss." Replied Ocean.
     "Hello, Longshot, sir." Shikari said.
Despite his efforts to stop it, she always called him sir. Longshot reached
into his coat's pocket and took out a cigar. He then reached into the opposite
pocket and pulled out a cutter. After snipping the end, he placed the cigar in his
mouth. He then picked up the candle on the table and lit the dark roll of tobacco
leaves. He puffed until the cigar's end lit up cherry red. He then sat back and
puffed a couple of times to make sure that it was lit. The area was soon filled with
the sweet smell of the tobacco.
     "Where is Pepsi?" he asked.
"Out doing calisthenics. She didn't like that lost she received." Even though
weeks had passed since the fight, the young warrior continued her endurance training.
Longshot nodded and puffed again on the cigar. The waitress brought over the
pint and he thanked her. He then flipped a coin to her. The woman's eyes bulged.
Before she could tell him he paid too much, Longshot told her that she owed him two
more pints. The rest was for her. The waitress thanked him profusely and hurried
back to work. The truth of the matter was that she owed him six more at the amount
she gave him. She made a mental note to spend the rest of the night coming over to
make sure he was taken care of.
     "And Lionik?"
Shikari tilted her head towards one of the dark corners. He could see the man
had a young woman sitting on his lap. She was feeding him slivers of meat and
giggling like a maniac at some joke the warrior whispered in her ear.
     "And where is Porta?"
Ocean rolled her eyes and gave a sigh. Longshot knew where Porta was. The same
place he had been since they arrived in Arkers.
"He is in his room, Boss." She said.
Porta hated Arkers. Hated it with a passion. He never hid his disdain for the
place. It was good that he stayed in his room tonight. There is no telling what
alcohol would do to his loose tongue.
"Yes, sir. He is in his room working on his duelmaster's address speech. He
said he wanted to get it out as soon as possible."
Longshot placed his cigar on the edge of the table. "What did you say?"
Shikari sat up straight. She didn't know what she had said wrong. But their
manager had a look of dread upon his face.
"He is working on his duelmaster's speech. He told me that he couldn't be
disturbed."
Despite his size, Longshot got up from the table and bolted for the door. The
patrons looked to see what was causing the ruckus. Those that weren't fast enough to
get out of the way were knocked to the floor. Soon he was out the door and running
down the streets of Arkers.
"Did I say something wrong?" asked Shikari.
Ocean chuckled. "No little one. You didn't say anything wrong. Longshot is
just afraid that Porta is going to say something rude. We are new to the city. We
don't want to make waves. Not yet anyway. He managed to stop Porta's message last
time. But this time, I fear the boss is too late."
     "Why is that?" asked Shikari.
"Because Porta just walked through the door."
The young warrior walked through the crowded room. He had a grimace upon his
face and tended to give extra room to any patron walking by who seemed close to
touching him. He wore a pair of blue pants and a thick orange shirt. A blue cloak
hung from his shoulders to keep the winter winds at bay. His black curly hair was
clean cut and he wore his moustache in a pencil thin line. When he finally arrived
at the table, he sat down in the chair that was once occupied by his manager. Porta
looked down at the pint of ale and the still smoldering cigar. "Longshot's?"
Both women nodded. Porta then picked up the cigar ad began to puff away on it.
"Where is he anyway?" Porta asked. Cigar smoke billowing from his mouth.
"He ran out the door just before you entered." Ocean replied. She waved the
smoke away.
"Really? Why?" this time he was careful to exhale the smoke away from the
others.
Shikari looked down. "I told him you were working on your duel master speech."
Her cheeks turned a rosy red.
This caused Porta to laugh. "So, I guess he was going to make sure I didn't
offend these sweaty urchins. Well, it is too late. I already left my words with the
scribe at the commission. He couldn't change it now for all of the gold in
Alastari."
"Well, you are hard on the people here. Like them or not, they are Andorian.
It isn't like they are Delarq." Ocean said while she swirled her wine in its glass.
Porta picked up Longshot's pint and took a long pull from it. Soon the pint was
empty and he placed the empty glass back on the table.
     "This is true."
"Porta... Why is Mr. Longshot worried? What is he afraid of you doing?"
Porta looked at the young girl sitting next to him. A sly smile on his lips.
He then turned and looked at Ocean. She only held out her hand as if to say, "Tell
her."
After he finished, Shikari sat stunned with her mouth hanging open in shock.
Ocean only covered her face with her hand and laughed.
Their time in Arkers was going to be very interesting.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

So... This is Arkers? What a hole. They closed the games in Seam but this
place gets to continue to fester? Arkers is the cancer of Andor. I suggest to
Longshot, no I pleaded with him to go to Aruak City. That is the place we should be.
But no. He insisted on coming to this cess pit.
I arrived and what do I see? The streets are dirty, it smells of dung, there
are snot nosed children begging for money, and the most god awful looking women
offering their services. I assume they are women.
The amount of hair upon their faces says otherwise. It also seems that I have
won the title here in this cancer. Very well. If it is a champion you so badly
need; if it is a duelmaster that you need, I will accept the title. Perhaps I can
inspire some of the citizens here to crawl out of the urine puddles they love so much
and try walking upright. Since the "You Pay I Slay" stable has taken a hiatus, I
guess I will try my mettle against another member of Middle Way 11.

All glory to Seam,
     Port-A-Fortress

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARKERS this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. And let's see, OCEAN SIZE fought VIRTUOUS SCRIBE
and gained 10 points and contributed to THE CHOSEN's 2-3-0. LELAND OLVEN has lost to
NOBLE ASSASSIN, falling 7 points, while helping make MIDDLE WAY 11 a 2-2-0 turn.
Defending his title for another turn, PORT-A-FORTRESS kept YOU PAY I SLAY's warrior,
FIELDER, from claiming the throne. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the
top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Swinging Aardvark until they
win. Maybe?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. STAR HUNTER has cause to stand
tall, as they were ARKERS' most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team
to beat. And guess who avoided STAR HUNTER stable the most? Believe it or not, it
was THE CHOSEN. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was MIDDLE
WAY 11's warrior ORVILLE ROUSE. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that ARKERS has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, ARKERS, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in ARKERS, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in ARKERS again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Ever wonder how the whole challenge/avoid thing works?
Who you fight depends on exactly how it works. We will never know exactly how it
works unless we can get a look at the coding for the program, but this is how I think
it works:

The Situation:
The system allows a warrior to make two separate challenges and two distinct
avoids.
Avoids are distinct in that they MUST indicate a specific team to be avoided, so
a "double avoid" indicates a single team twice, which by default means you are
avoiding one team. In this case, the second avoid is a duplicate and therefore a
waste of an avoid.
Challenges are to specific warriors. You have a first challenge, and then you
have a second challenge.

The Process:
First the computer removes all Dark Arena challengers from the list of available
warriors.
Second, the computer checks for WHO fights WHO by going though all TVs and
bloodfeuds, which are 100% sure to go through except in four instances:
     1. the warrior challenged does not fight,
     2. the warrior challenged is also making a bloodfeud or TV challenge and that
challenge has already been assigned,
     3. the warrior has already been assigned to a Dark Arena fight,
     4. that warrior has declared your team to be one of his warrior's avoids,
reducing your challenge to 50%.
Third, the computer assesses all the regular first-challenge warriors and assigns
fights. All other challenges are at 100% chance of success except in a few instances:
warrior challenged is going to the DA, warrior challenged is involved in a previously
assigned challenge, warrior challenged is not running this turn, or warrior challenged
has avoided your team at 50% chance to avoid.
Fourth, the computer assesses and assigns all secondary challenges of warriors
not so far assigned for bloodfeuds and TVs.
Fifth, the computer assesses and assigns all the regular second challenges.
Sixth, the computer assigns random matchups in each available class starting with
the highest class first.
Seventh, the computer finds the remaining warriors that have successfully avoided
all first and second challenges and/or who also did not get randomly assigned, AND for
whom no more available warriors remain in their class for random pairing. All of
these warriors get RSI-generated warriors to fight based on their class.
So, if I'm right and avoids reduce the chance for a challenge to 50%, then:
In the absence of an avoid
          single challenge = 100% success
double challenge = 100% success, then an additional 100% success
     Where an avoid is involved
single challenge vs avoid = 50% success
          double challenge vs avoid = 75% (chance to avoid is 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25; 1 -
0.25 = 75% chance to succeed

Bloodfeuds and TVs may increase the percentage chance of success above 100%, or
they may not. I feel that their increased ability to get through is based solely on
the way the computer assigns challenges. They are first, so they are most likely to
go through. The 100% chance for a challenge to succeed is 100% if it's a TV bloodfeud
and you are the first one to get assigned a fight that day because you are also the
Duelmaster. But after that the chances start to diminish rapidly.
The run-through for second challenges theoretically means your challenge should
be 100% but it's not the case if you are the LAST guy the computer goes to for finding
challenges.
If you don't double challenge, you significantly lower your chance to get your
challenge through. The second challenge is not equal to the first challenge.
