It is rare that Raymond Cobb turned away customers but there just wasn't any more room. The cause of the overabundance of thirsty customers was the storm raging outside. It started four days ago and would not relent. The first couple of nights had been dead. Everyone had decided to stay in their homes where it was warm and dry. But after four nights of it, the citizens became stir crazy and braved the down pour to have a pint and socialize. One of the customers joked that he was thirsty and came here for a drink. Ray's head waitress, Matilda Thistlewaite, said if they were truly thirsty, they would just poke their heads out of a window and open their mouths. Ray laughed at the joke until his face turned as red as a beet. Raymond Cobb was a retired member of Arker's city guard. One would think that after decades of dealing with the city's riff raff like thugs, thieves, and drunks, the person would simply go off into the sunset and spend the last few years resting. Perhaps playing with their grandchildren and filling their little heads with stories of the guard. But that wasn't for Ray. He had never married, nor did he have any children. So, of course grandchildren were out. And it seems resting was out too. After only being retired for a month, Ray found himself back at the recruiting office. No one thought he was serious about wanting his old job back. At first they thought it was a joke, but when they realized that he was serious, he was quickly pushed out the door. Feeling humiliated, Ray headed back to his modest apartment. Before he got home, he saw that the Maiden Pub was for sale. At first Ray was sad that the old pub was going up for sale. Then the idea hit him. Ray ran home and locked the door and shut the shutter. He then pulled a lock box from under his bed. The lockbox wasn't anything spectacular. It was 24"x12"x8" in dimension. It had metal bands and hinges that were the light yellow of fake gold. The front had a huge lock. Ray had forgotten about the lock. He stood up and went to his small bookshelf. He chose the third book from the left and opened it. Pressed in between the pages was the key. In his years on the city guard, he noticed that most people carried the key to their valuables on their person. After being robbed and beaten, the unfortunate victim returned home to a ransacked house. The thieves had stalked the victim and learned where he lived. So, even if they didn't know that there was a safe box there, they did know that all of their keys they carried must go somewhere. Ray opened the box and inside was five Andorian eagles. Ray could never have earned that much in his entire career. He came by them when he and his shift made a raid on a local brothel that was allegedly robbing customers. It wouldn't have been a big deal except one of the workers got greedy and decided to rob a wealthy and very influential merchant. The merchant in turn reported the crime and demanded that it handled. Discreetly of course. No need for his wife to find out what he was up to on the nights he was supposed to be out with his friends. During the raid, while the owner was being restrained, Ray saw a stack of eagles the brothel owner had been counting. They were in stacks like little golden towers. It was so easy during the confusion to rest his hand on one of those towers and palm it. Slipping into one of the other rooms gave him enough time to drop them in his pouch. Ray had never had a moment of weakness like that before or after. Fortunately, that moment of weakness allowed him to buy the Maiden. The Drunken Swordsman had also become the favorite watering hole of the Chosen. Tonight, the entire stable was at their favorite table raising glasses and remembering their fallen team mate. Shikari was a complete enigma. She was an adult who acted like a child. She was also a warrior who could not finish an opponent when she had him on the ropes. Her one victory was a complete fluke because she didn't realize that she actually hurt the guy. When she got the news that she was going to the dark arena, she just laughed. It was as if Longshot had told her the king of all jokes. He tried several times to explain the seriousness of the situation. But she just laughed some more. What was even weirder was that she was beating Moutnain Troll. But in the middle of the fight, she just stopped. That gave him a chance to actually hit her. The rest is history. The first time Longshot laid eyes on her, he felt she didn't belong in the arena. But the Gladiatorial Commission allowed her to sign up. A group of eight drunk and happy customers said their farewells and bundled their cloaks tight to reduce the amount of rain drenching their clothes. They then ducked low and ran out into the night. Drunken curses and laughter could be heard as they made their way home. But before the door could slam shut, one lone figure ran in. His soggy black cloak clung to his body as the water ran down it and onto the worn wooden floor. The man pulled back the hood and looked around the crowded room. His stomach rumbled at the smells of the food being brought to various tables from the kitchen. He would fill his belly once he finished what he came here to do. He wasn't a very imposing figure. He had a full red beard and long red hair that he wore in two braids. His blue shirt was soaked and clung to his body. The man moved to the table where the Chosen were sitting and talking. Ocean was the first to notice the man walking up to their table. It didn't take a genius to know he was making a bee line to them. Ocean put down her glass of wine and nodded to get Longshot's attention. Longshot stopped drinking his ale and turn to see what was going on. The man walked up to the table and turned all of his attention to Longshot. "Are you the manager of the Chosen?" "Yes. I am." Longshot replied. "Pleased to meet you, sir. My name is Pyrat Ironforged. I want to apply for this position." The young man then placed the soggy bill on the table. It was so battered by rain that most of the ink had washed off. "Her body isn't even cold yet. Why don't you buzz off. You vulture." Ria said. "My apologies, sir. But a man has to eat. I figure this was the best way to do it. I meant no disrespect." This got a stifled laugh from Porta. He loved when people mistook Ria for a man. Lionik didn't like it at all. Ria was his girl, after all. To comfort her, he placed his hand on her shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. Pyrat was surprised when Longshot introduced Ria to him. He immediately apologized. Ria waved away the apology. She had heard it all before. She took a long drink from her mug and held it up for a waitress to refill it. Longshot stopped the waitress and asked her to bring back two. He had seen how Pyrat had eyed their empty plates when he sat down. He waved over another waitress and ordered a big bowl of the stew that was cooking. The waitress came back with the stew in a wooden bowl and a big hunk of bread. Pyrat immediately dove into the stew. He ate as if he hadn't had a good meal in weeks. "What is your story?" Longshot thought as he watched the man wipe the bowl with a piece of bread to get the last of the stew. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===SLOW ARENA NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 361): IMA SLAYER of YOU PAY I SLAY (Khisanth, mgr.) CONTRACT BRIDGE of OLDIES (Coach, mgr.) SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. PEASANT REBELLION now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at STAR HUNTER, who went down to 7th from 11th. Life is tough. Hey everybody, watch out for SPARAFUCILE, who flew up 29 points in the rankings after mashing ZINC like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was FIELDER, who dropped 15 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with KOTTER NAHL. Drawing on all of its experience as a 19-12-1 warrior, ALAMO went for the Duelmastership against IMA SLAYER this week. It's a proud day for the SMITHSONIAN stable, as their warrior, ALAMO, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARKERS arena. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid STAR HUNTER, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ARKERS really have that many liars? And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause PEASANT REBELLION beats feet every time STAR HUNTER smiles at them. Try farming, eh? Well just about everybody wants a piece of LELAND OLVEN, who was this week's most challenged warrior. Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans was PENNY, who was successfully challenged by PORT-A-FORTRESS who had a mere 23 points more than PENNY. Definition of petty: PORT-A-FORTRESS defeated PENNY, a mismatch of 23 points. Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. Well, there's the manager of the ARKERS giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights.
