TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The sun slowly climbed higher in the sky of Arkers. The streets soon filled
with people rushing off to work and children off to school. Small talk and the
laughter of children made a strange music as everyone moved along the streets. Milk
men maneuvered their carts through the streets dropping off bottles at the market.
Deliverers for the local bakeries carried huge baskets stuffed full of warm, linen
wrapped loaves of bread. Occasionally one would knock on the front door of a house
or dart up the steps to the second floor to deliver the bread to hungry families.
The women of the houses would press a jer-hawk into the hand of the delivery man to
settle their tab or to catch up with past due bill.
Pyrat Ironforged exited the temple of Mantor the Bright. He had just finished
his morning prayers and was returning the Chosen's guild house. He wore a simple
brown tunic with black pants and black boots to match. His red hair hung down past
his shoulders and came to rest on his scabbard sword strapped to his back. Pyrat
wore a single thin braid of hair on his left side of his face. Since coming to
Arkers, he has trimmed his beard to a more presentable length. He agreed to do it
after Ocean told him he looked like a mad hermit fresh from the top of some mountain.
The observation didn't bother him. What made the situation awkward was when she
complimented him on his green eyes. There was a heartbeat of silence and then he
quickly excused himself. There was no way he would ever see her as anything but a
friend. His life was dedicated to Mantor the Bright. Pyrat Ironforged was on a
mission and he couldn't be distracted by the fairer sex. No matter how charming he
found her.
The streets were becoming too crowded, so Pyrat decided to take one of the side
streets. When there was a break in cart traffic, he darted across the street and
down the narrow path between two buildings. Pyrat's stomach began to rumble. It was
time for breakfast and he had hoped that there would be biscuits and thick slabs of
bacon. That would go well with some of the black berry preserves Ria bought. His
stomach grumbled louder in protest of his teasing thoughts.
The alley continued straight but was met on the left side by another pathway.
That is where Pyrat wanted to go. Not only did this route help him avoid all of the
hassle of the main road but it cut twenty minutes from his walk. He would have to
enter the guild house through the back door, but it was worth it. As Pyrat turned
left, he noticed two books on the ground. He bent over to pick them up and noticed
that they were a child's school books. Someone must have dropped them rushing off to
school. Pyrat put the books back where he found them. The child would probably be
back soon to pick them up.
"No!" and then there was the sound of flesh on flesh. Someone was struck. The
voice was definitely female. It was hard to tell, but Pyrat suspected that it came
from the main alley way. He decided to delay his breakfast for a few minutes to see
what was going on. As Pyrat quietly walked down the pathway he could hear mothers
telling their children to hurry up or fathers bellowing to his wife to help him find
a piece of miss placed clothing. There was a dog barking as well. He sounded big
but he also sounded a lot farther away than the shout.
"Hold her. Hold her." It was a gruff voice. It sounded slurred. There was
laughter along with the gruff voice. Laughter that told that the persons ahead meant
no good.
Pyrat almost walked right into the back of a man stand off to the side. He was
big. Really big. And he smelled like a distillery. He was undoing his pants and
looking at a young girl. Two other men held the young girl down in a garbage pile.
The people who lived in the houses put their garbage there for pick up. The men
holding the girl seemed just as drunk as the big man in front of him.
"That'll be enough of that!" Pyrat said. The big man turned around and his two
accomplices looked over to see what had disturbed their foul activity.
"Let the girl go, and we will all just walk away and pretend nothing ever
happened." Pyrat was lying of course. He was already making a mental description of
all three so that he could report them to the city watch.
"Who are you? You'd better get out of here before I split your skull."
"I am Pyrat Ironforged of the Chosen. We are the fist of Mantor the Bright."
"Oh, you are with those hopped up snobs. Get lost, you." The big man
dismissively waved Pyrat away. No one in the city liked the Chosen thanks to Porta's
abusive Duel Master's columns and interaction with the locals.
With one hand, Pyrat freed the sword he wore on his back. The well cared for
blade slide out easily. Pyrat Ironforged spun the blade around making a whooshing
sound. "Last chance; let the girl go and walk away."
The big man's only reply was to take a swing at the young gladiator. Pyrat
nimbly stepped back. The big man followed swinging again and again. He didn't
notice that he was being led down the narrow alley the red haired little man.
The two men holding the girl down looked at each other. They didn't know what
to do. Suddenly there was a grunt of pain and a thump of something hitting wood.
The two men let the girl go and ran to see what had happened. Whether she was dazed
from the assault or curiosity took over, but she followed her attackers. All three
looked down the alley and saw Pyrat standing and the big man leaning against the wall
of one of the houses and holding the right side of his face. Blood gushed out and
dripped down his arm and onto the dirty streets.
"Take this idiot and get out of here." Pyrat said. The men did as he told them
and the three of them walked the opposite way down the alley. When Pyrat tried to
see if the girl was okay, she ran past him. He watched as she grabbed her books and
continued back to the main street. Pyrat stood in the alley alone trying to figure
out what had just happened.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 -- March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the
Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio
de Bixar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, USA). All of the Texian defenders were
killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians, both
Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States, to join the Texian Army.
Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle
of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.
Several months previously, Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican
Texas. Approximately 100 Texians were then garrisoned at the Alamo. The Texian
force grew slightly with the arrival of reinforcements led by eventual Alamo co-
commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis. On February 23, approximately 1,500
Mexicans marched into San Antonio de Bixar as the first step in a campaign to re-take
Texas. For the next 10 days the two armies engaged in several skirmishes with
minimal casualties. Aware that his garrison could not withstand an attack by such a
large force, Travis wrote multiple letters pleading for more men and supplies, but
fewer than 100 reinforcements arrived.
In the early morning hours of March 6, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo.
After repulsing two attacks, Texians were unable to fend off a third attack. As
Mexican soldiers scaled the walls, most of the Texian soldiers withdrew into interior
buildings. Defenders unable to reach these points were slain by the Mexican cavalry
as they attempted to escape. Between five and seven Texians may have surrendered; if
so, they were quickly executed. Most eyewitness accounts reported between 182 and
257 Texians dead, while most historians of the Alamo agree that 400-600 Mexicans were
killed or wounded. Several noncombatants were sent to Gonzales to spread word of the
Texian defeat. The news sparked both a strong rush to join the Texian army and a
panic, known as "The Runaway Scrape", in which the Texian army, most settlers, and
the new Republic of Texas government fled from the advancing Mexican Army.
Within Mexico, the battle has often been overshadowed by events from the
Mexican-American War of 1846-48. In 19th-century Texas, the Alamo complex gradually
became known as a battle site rather than a former mission. The Texas Legislature
purchased the land and buildings in the early part of the 20th century and designated
the Alamo chapel as an official Texas State Shrine. The Alamo is now "the most
popular tourist site in Texas." The Alamo has been the subject of numerous non-
fiction works beginning in 1843. Most Americans, however, are more familiar with the
myths spread by many of the movie and television adaptations, including the 1950s
Disney miniseries Davy Crockett and John Wayne's 1960 film The Alamo.
In terms of ethnicity among the Texian defenders, 13 were native-born Texians,
with 11 of these 13 being of Mexican descent. The rest of the Alamo defenders
consisted of 41 men born in Europe, 2 Jews, 2 blacks, and the remainder were
Americans from states other than Texas. Santa Anna's forces were a conglomeration of
former Spanish citizens.

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ARKERS, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! STEEL PROPHETS after a sorry 2-3-0 might want to
consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues!
Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as
YOU PAY I SLAY can attest... SMITHSONIAN posted a nice gain, to come in 2nd.
Everybody loves a winner... Practice pays for PENNY, who pummelled ZORK, to pocket
26 points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more,
after losing 22 points to PENNY. (Discrete enough, ZORK?) ELDARRAN found out that
ARKERS isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! Word has
it one team in ARKERS is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to
death. I'll bet it works.
So much to report, so little time! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in THE
CHOSEN are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. The warriors
of THE CHOSEN found their efforts at combat frustrated as SMITHSONIAN apparently had
more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and
PUGACHEV is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't PEASANT REBELLION proud!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Questions are being
raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in
ARKERS would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the
wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Do not despair! I
shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir
