                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Port-A-Fortress was ecstatic. He had finally regained the title of duelmaster.
He didn't care that he beat an upstart with only six fights to his name. He just
knew that he held the title again. If anyone had asked him, he wasn't worried about
fighting Globulizer. He had read that the warrior from Weird Alchemy had won
tournament champion in his class. This did not impress him. There were too many
sand baggers in the upper tier of Arkers; a loss is a loss no matter who gave it to
you. But if Globulizer had opted to challenge Porta, as opposed to blood feuding the
death of his stable mate, there is a good chance that it would have been his last
fight. Globulizer was a whirling dervish of death on the sands. Despite his
fascade, Porta knew that death waiting for him if he accepted Globulizer's challenge.
Porta insisted that he didn't care, but anyone with common sense knew the truth.
Porta opened the door to the Chosen's guild house with a crash and closed it
equally so. He carried a couple of bottles of wine in a canvas bag. He looked in
the living room and saw Pyrat sitting on the sofa and Ria was sitting in the big
chair that once belonged to Sturm the Brute. She was staring quietly off into the
distance while Pyrat sat cross-legged reading some book on the theology of Mantor the
Bright. The youngest member of the Chosen had said he joined because he remembered
as a child how the warrior monks had proudly taught their beliefs. Now that he has
arrived, he only saw a bunch of mercenaries there only for a pay check.
Longshot, Ocean, and the now deceased Lionik supported the young man's claim
that the team was originally a group of warrior monks. Porta had the feeling that
Pyrat was trying to edge everyone back to that past glory.
Pyrat looked up from his reading and said hello. Porta usually ignored the
young man or came back with one of his usual quips. But he was in such a good mood,
he said hello back and placed the two huge bottles of wine on the table with a thud.
The two talked and Pyrat told Porta that Ocean had been looking for him.
"And what does she want? Did she say?" Porta asked.
"I can't really say. But she has been trying to talk to you since it was
announced that you won the title. That was two weeks ago. Are you avoiding her?"
"No! Why would I do that?" Porta lied. The fact of the matter is that he was
indeed avoiding, Ocean. He already knew what she was going to say and he really
didn't feel like hearing it. The last thing he needed was another person giving
lectures. Longshot was bad enough.
All the while the two talked, Ria continued to stare off into space. If she
heard the conversation, she didn't respond with her usual quips. Porta decided to
head to his room. Since Ocean was looking for him, he would continue to hide out.
Mantor only knew what she wanted with him.
The stocky warrior took the stairs of the guild house two at a time. As soon as
he cleared the last step, he was greeted by Ocean waiting for him at the top of the
stairs.
"How long have you been waiting here?" he asked. Porta wished he had come up
earlier instead of talking with Pyrat.
"Not long," Ocean replied. This was true. She hadn't been there long. She had
been in her room waiting for Porta to return home. She had tried his room, but it
was empty. So, she just had to wait. But it didn't take long. Ocean had heard the
door close down stairs and when she walked into the hall way, she heard Porta and
Pyrat's voice coming up the stairs. But she wasn't going to tell him that.
"We need to talk." Ocean then turned and went to her room. Porta looked once
at his room and then decided to give up and follow Ocean. He had an idea of what
Ocean wanted to talk to him about. And to be honest; if he ran to his room and
locked the door, she'd just wait. He'd be a prisoner in his own home.
Porta entered Ocean's room and she closed the door. There wasn't anything
special about her room. It looked like any other room in the guild house. She had
her bed against the wall and a nightstand on either side of it. On the right
nightstand was a figurine of a young girl sitting and looking at a flower. There was
a wardrobe on the opposite wall from the bed; there was also a chair next to the
window. Porta didn't understand this. The window opened to the side of the guild
house. All she had a view of was the wall of the next building. Ocean sat on her
bed and waved her hand towards the chair indicating that she wanted Porta to have a
seat. He did and then his stable mate spoke.
"First off: Congratulations on winning the title. I would have offered my
congratulations, but you seemed to be anywhere that I wasn't."
Before Porta could give his explanation Ocean raised her hand. "Save it. I
know you were avoiding me. I am not Pyrat. You cannot lie to me. I know you too
well."
Porta smiled at the last part.
"I am guessing you are about to work on your Duelmaster's Column. Listen. You
will be civil in this one. Okay?"
"What in the hell are you talking about? Be civil? To the locals of this town?
You know that isn't going to happen."
Ocean let out a sigh that was full of frustration. "Ever since we have arrived,
you have done nothing but insult the people here. I still can't believe you told
that girl that you could still see her mustache despite the makeup and made her cry.
She was considered one of the prettiest girls in the city! You hit a mental cripple
in the head with an iron skillet." (See turn 358 newsletter)
"Well. you could. Fortunately she had blond hair. It was really hard to notice
at first. And that defect was urinating against our guild house. He had it coming."
"You started a feud with You Pay I Slay. Khisanth is a powerful manager and you
starting a fight with his table."
"So what? He runs tourney babies. That doesn't seem too powerful to me. Can I
go outside and beat up on the dirty little rug rats running around the city and then
accept praise for it? Of course not! Why should I respect him?"
"Porta!" Ocean stopped and regained composure. "You have even gone as far as
get into a feud with a member of the Consortium."
"Yosemite was a Lord Protector masquerading as one of us. He was no better than
those clowns in the You Pay I Slay stable."
Ocean covered her face with her hands. Talking to Porta was like talking to a
child. They could go all afternoon with this verbal game of cat and mouse. Ocean
did not want it to get to this point, but she had no choice.
"If you don't stop, I will tell everyone what happened a few months ago."
Porta had no idea what she was talking about. Then she told him that she saw
him take his dagger out and stab the child's ball with it. (See turn 359 newsletter)
She also saw the five men who threatened to beat him for it. She told Porta
everything. She gave details that others would never know.
"So, you will be civil in this next column, yes?"
Porta didn't answer. He glared at Ocean from his chair.
     "Do we have an understanding?"
"Yes. Yes, we do." Porta replied and then went left the room. Ocean was proud
of herself. She had finally done it. She couldn't believe how easy it had been.
A few days later, Ocean sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and a copy of
the newsletter in hand. She then opened to the Duelmaster column.
"Why, you little son of a bi...."
The rest of her feeling about Porta could be heard two houses over.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

No. No, sit down. Please. No applause. Please. Stop. Yes, I know. I know.
I am your better. Calm. Calm.... Shhhhhhh.... Now, that is better. Greetings to
all of the unwashed, slack jawed locals of Arkers. Tis I, Port-A-Fortress. The man
you all aspire to be. I have finally waded through all of the rubbish to reclaim my
title. It has been too long. Much, much too long. But never fear, I plan on being
here for a long, long time.
First off, I would like to squash a vicious rumor. There is a rumor that I was
chased by five ruffians after I took my dagger and punctured one of your grimy
children's balls. Oh yes, I destroyed the child's toy. But only after he continued
to hit me with it as I walked to get some fresh air. I asked the street urchin
several times to stop. I even used single syllable words to make him understand. I
know how big words confuse you Arkerites, Akerians, Hicks... whatever you are called.
That is when five three tooth ruffians attacked me. By the way; I don't mean that
they all had three teeth. I mean there were only three teeth amongst the lot of
them! When one of them drew back to hit me, I simply stared him down. Once he
realized he was dealing with a citizen of Seam, and he saw my rugged good looks, he
backed off. So, I was never chased. Now that that is settled....
Curator, I understand you had an opinion on Ria's two challenges. You can be
quiet now. Now seriously. None of you can tout the "Andorian Way." You, and the
other sandbagging hooligans have shown you don't believe in that. Leave her alone.
She is grieving the death of her lover and you are picking at her. You are just
proving me correct about Arkers not having class. Now finish up the dusting.
And speaking of classless sandbaggers, I see Peasant Rebellion is here and
stirring up more nonsense. It made me feel good to send you packing, Pitchfork Kid.
If you ever attack me again, I will give you more of the same! You have been warned.
By the way, that booger has been hanging in your nose for three weeks now. Clean
yourself up, man!
Welcome to Trial By Combat. I see you have met Pyrat. Don't feel bad, ladies.
He has a knack for getting wins like that. But this is the first time he got a kill
that way. Enjoy your bloodfeud.
Okay, hicks. I am off. Longshot is away and I heard that he received some new
cigars as a gift. Of course I will 'borrow' one or two of them. Until next time....

Port-A-Fortress

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to ARKERS once again! Biff! Pow! ARKERS watched with glee as THE
CHOSEN got knocked off top spot by PEASANT REBELLION! Hmmmph! I always thought THE
CHOSEN was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 1-3-0! Ya gotta be quick on
yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! STEEL
PROPHETS is now ranked 3rd with a 3-2-0 turn. WEIRD ALCHEMY showed ARKERS what they
were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0. What's with
TORCHBEARER TOM? He actually beat SMITHSONIAN's PLYMOUTH ROCK, and walked away with
24 more points from the fight. Major screwup at SMITHSONIAN. PLYMOUTH ROCK lost 16
points to TORCHBEARER TOM. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe PLYMOUTH ROCK will
provide more easy wins... Apparently ARKERS isn't filled with as many gutless
wonders as I thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster got 4 challenges this turn! Another
fighter (ZORK 17-7-3) challenged another Duelmaster (PORT-A-FORTRESS 19-8-0). Life
goes on. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for Z GLADIATORZ's outstanding member,
Duelmaster ZORK. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your
fellow fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
ARKERS thinks THE CHOSEN and their 182-186-11 is too much! If at first you don't
succeed, give up... Management must be dealin', as the boys at STEEL PROPHETS ain't
reelin'! THE CHOSEN's mad!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills,
fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Longshot -- All us Consortium folk enjoyed your writings. Keep it up. -- Curator et

Port-A-Fortress? Duelmaster?! Kudos, Champ. Always good to see the old fogies win
titles. -- Curator

Sweet Revenge -- What's so sweet about it? You had to take me to court, now a pack
of cigs costs five bucks. It used to be a quarter. You sleeze! -- Lucky Strikes
(LSMFT)

Ria The Caressor -- Thanks for the massage. I enjoyed every minute of it. --
Mayflower

Bea Zerk -- Taking forts must be your forte? -- Ticonderoga

Health. Humility. Honor.
Happy New Year to all.

Shucks! I sorta liked last turn's 3-0 better than this 1-2. My Zs are so
undependable! -- Mr. Zee, The Z Man

Torchbearer Tom -- I guess I quelled that uprising! -- Zephyr

Ocean Size -- Water, water everywhere, nor ary drop to drink.... -- Zinc (who doesn't
really need water anyway)

Blue Flak -- Arghhh! Again? The MUGs must like you? -- Zoo (closed for the
Holidays)

A Z a day shortens the Alphabet Song. -- Mr. Zee

R.I.P., Lionik. ST=6(1) CN=9(1) SZ=18 WT=13 WL=17 SP=8 DF=15. He had an Advanced
Expert in initiative, an Advanced Expert in attack, and an Advanced Expert in
defense. I don't know why he stopped learning, being able to train, and winning.
I've seen duelmasters with less rating than he had.

Middle Way -- That is odd behavior to me. Don't you respect your dead that cry out
for vengeance from the grave? -- Pyrat

Trial by Combat -- I think it is safe to guess that you will not give me the luxury
that the Middle way has. -- Pyrat

Zinc -- I know. I know. I should be higher up. Why am I picking of tough guys like
you. But remember this; you were beaten by a girlie girl. -- Ocean Size

Curator -- Surely a downchallenge can't be a surprise? There's a lot of it going
around, even here in the Andorian arenas, in these days of rampant Small Arena
Syndrome. Doesn't mean we any of us like receiving a downchallenge, but what's the
point in making a big deal of it? It happens. -- Jorja

Globulizer -- Well, I would have liked to see you target some of those sponges, too,
but so be it. Your bloodfeud was well done. -- Leland Olven

Plymouth Rock -- Luck is all it was, too. -- Imerta Loel

Clyde d'Club -- Take that, you unwashed peasant! -- Kotter Nahl

Shadow -- Another win! Cool. -- Potter Sands
