Ria and Pyrat sat in big cushioned chairs close to the small fireplace in lodge
227. This was where Longshot's warriors would stay in during the Spring Tourney. It
was odd that the Gladiatorial Commission dubbed it the Spring Tourney. Normally it
would be called the Fool's Tourney or the Death and Taxes Tourney. What was even
odder was that winter was still refusing to release it icy grasp on the land and so
there were several gladiators arriving wearing heavy cloaks with fluffy ermine.
Workers were busy shoveling or sweeping away the drifts of snow to make pathways for
the gladiators to move about their rooms and to get to and from the arena. No one
wanted to be eliminated from the tourney because of a fall that broke and arm or
twisted an ankle. A halberd blow to the face was fine, but losing a bout to black
ice was too embarrassing for words.
The two warriors could barely keep their eyes opened as they sat and talked. It
was a long trip from Arkers and the thick cushions of the chairs and the warm fire
was lulling them to sleep. When they first arrived, they had caught their second
wind and decided to put away their luggage, wash away the grime of the road, and have
a bottle, or two, of wine while they waited for Longshot's other warriors to arrive.
Their manager was in a good mood because he had gotten another warrior invited to the
Isle. When he first laid eyes on Koroshiya Ichi, everything about the young man said
that he would be an excellent aimed blow. His speed, his deftness, and the way he
could simply look at an opponent and find every weak point on their bodies. Now he
was immortal. This was the most optimistic Longshot has been in years about his
warriors.
The first bottle was quickly drained and Ria got up to open a second when there
was a knock at the door. Since Ria was taking care of refilling their wine glasses,
Pyrat rose to answer the door. Ria waved him down and went to answer the door
herself. She was already up and the wine had put her in a cheerful mood. Ria
opened the door to their lodge, but there wasn't anyone there. So, she cussed and
slammed the door.
     "What happened?" Pyrat asked.
"No one was there." Ria replied.
"Are you sure?" the red haired member of The Chosen asked. "It could have been
the guy from Morya. What was his name?" The young man scratched his beard in
thought. His cheeks were rosey red from the alcohol he had consumed. He then
snapped his fingers. "Water Rat."
Water Rat was a jokester. Everyone of Longshot's warriors knew this. The young
man was notorious for smart comments. If sarcasm was a gladiatorial skill, he was an
advanced master in it. Even his arena name was a joke. It rained on his first day in
Morya. When the young man saw his reflection in the mirror he started to laugh.
Because of his long black hair, pointy chin, and pointy nose, he turned to Longshot
and said he looked like a wet rat. They both laughed at the joke and the name stuck.
When Ria first met him, she noticed that his personality was the day to Porta's dark
brooding one. He wasn't mean spirited like her veteran team mate.
"You could be right," Ria agreed. Just then there was another knock at the
door. Ria stormed to the door and snatched it open again. "Dammit, Water! Stop
playing with the door!"
     "Who is Water?"
Ria looked down and saw a blonde haired dwarf. His hair was long with a single
braid down his right check. He had a full beard as well. He wore a black shirt and
grey pants. He had on black boots that came to his calves. He carried a back pack
over his left shoulder and he had a Warhammer in his right hand. The hammer was
huge. At least next to him.
"Sorry. I didn't see you dow..."
"It's you. You're the widow warrior. My condolences for your loss."
Ria nervously looked at the dwarf and then over at Pyrat who simply looked
confused. She quickly regrouped.
     "Anyway, why are you here?"
"The man in white sent me." the dwarf replied. He finished the last part with a
smile. As if everyone knew the man in white.
"What man in white?" Ria asked cautiously. She was pushing the door closed as
she asked the question. Perhaps this dwarf wasn't all there. They didn't need any
trouble before the tourney.
The dwarf saw what she was doing and figured out what she was thinking and
replied, "The one in all white with a sword in one hand and sca..."
"scales in the other." Pyrat finished for him. "The man came to you in your
dreams."
     "Yes! You know him?"
"No. But I have dreamt him."
"Oh..." the dwarf's disappointment was obvious. "Anyway, he told me to join
you. He said that my fate was here."
Ria had to get her bearings
"Pyrat, you never told me about some guy in white telling you to join us. You
had a copy of the want ad in your hand when you showed up at the Drunken Swordsman."
"Of course I did. You all would have thought that I was insane if I showed up
with stories of being sent by a man in all white swinging a sword and scales around
and stalking me in my dreams."
"It worked for me." the dwarf said. Ria and Pyrat looked back at the dwarf.
They had forgotten that he was there. Ria refrained from telling the dwarf that she
thought he was insane.
"Well, Longshot isn't here now. But you are welcome to come in and wait. You
must be cold. We have wine if you are interested."
"Thank you. But I prefer ale. Do you know where I might find some in this
village?"
"You're in luck. Longshot loves a good ale. He has a cask here as well." Pyrat
replied.
The dwarf smiled and entered the lodge and Ria closed the door. She had taken
no more than three steps when there was another knock at the door. Ria turned and
opened the door again. This time her jaw dropped open.
"You have got to be kidding me!"
There at the door stood a troll.
"No! Me not 'kidding me'. Me Jackie. Big Guy Jackie!"
     Ria sighed. "Just come in."

The streets of Arkers were busy with activity. People were bumping into each
other as they tried to shop for food or get to work. There were hawkers selling hot
buns stuffed with meat, pieces of fruit, and a strong tea and coffee sweetened with
sugar and thick cream. Suddenly, the normal sounds of their normal work day was
interrupted by a woman's scream. At first, no one paid attention to her. But then
there were more sounds. More and more people started to scream or to run in
scattered directions. A single horn blast was heard and soon people were looking
towards the commotion. What they saw was shocking.
There were humans of various skin tones walking ahead of a procession. They
were topless despite the cold weather; even the women. Their bodies had various
tattoos etched all over. The patterns were tribal and covered most, and on some all
of their bodies. They wore silvery metal collars around their necks. A closer look
at the collar would show that each one had studs that looked like skulls around them.
The humans with the tattoos and collars also wore cream colored loin clothes and they
had shackles around their ankles and did not wear shoes. The chains connecting the
shackles were just long enough to allow them to walk. The procession of enslaved
humans made a jingling noise with each step. None of them looked to the side or up
and down. Their heads were set and their eyes were forward. Two in the front of the
procession had huge horns made from some animal. As they walked along there was
another blast from their horns.
Those close to the horn blowers placed their hands on their ears to block out
the deafening sound. The next part of the procession was two groups of eight stocky
men. They had broad chests and shoulders and arms thick with muscles. The stocky
men were all of the same height. They were probably six feet tall is anyone would
guess. Each group of eight men carried large palanquins loaded with crates and
bundles. The people of Arkers looked at this and started to talk amongst themselves.
Who was making such a spectacle of an entrance to the city? No one had announced
royalty visiting. But who would have slaves? And who would dress them in such
attire?
"Mother! Look!" a child shouted and pointed.
The mother and others around all turned to see what the child was pointing at.
Stomping down the street were two boars. The animals were the biggest that anyone
had ever seen. They were the size of horses. They had thick black hair covering
their bodies and long dingy tusks coming from their lower jaw. The beast each had a
golden ring through their nose and a thick leather straps running from the bit in
their mouths. Each boar had a huge saddle on their back. In that saddle was
something that isn't seen every day in the city of Arkers: orcs.
One was clearly male and the other could be female. She had on a halter top of
crimson silk and five golden earrings in each ear. She also had silk pants of
crimson as well. She wore her black coarse hair in a ponytail and there was a thick
strap of leather used as a hair tie. She did not wear shoes so that spectators could
look on in awe at her colored toe-nails. The nails were crimson like her halter top.
One of her toes had a ring on it. It was obviously gold. On the side of her mount
she had what looked to be a long sword bedecked with jewels. But it was the longest
sword any of the citizens of Arkers had ever seen.
The male of the two was topless and had tattoos similar to what the slaves had.
They were white so that they stood out against his dark skin and he was no slave.
That mistake could never be made. He had a gold earring in each ear and one in his
nose. The male had long course black hair as well, but he wore his in a top knot.
The side of his face had thick sideburns. He did not wear pants like the female,
instead he had on a loincloth that was black as night. On the side of his mount he
had a huge battle axe. The weapon looked nasty enough on its own. But one look at
the orc's thick arms drove home the kind of damage he could do with the weapon.
The precession continued down the streets. It occasionally slowed, but never
halted, as gawkers were swept aside by them. The procession had finally stopped in
front of a vacant house. The house had once belonged to a gladiatorial team in the
city, but the members of that stable had packed up weeks ago and not shown any sign
of coming back.
One of the slaves had run up to the female orc's mount and dropped onto his
hands and knees. Another ran and stood next to him. He had his head down looking
directly at the ground and his hands were straight down at his side. The female orc
slid off the back of the huge boar she had been ridding and placed one of her bare
feet onto the slave's back. The slave stiffened under the weight of the female. His
eyes were looking at the ground and his head never moved from side to side. Once the
female orc had both feet on the ground, she looked about at the gathered crowd. The
dark skinned female had a look of disdain at the gathered spectators. The man who
was standing next to her mount took the reins of the animal and began silently
tending to it. He kept his attention on the mount. She then turned and walked to
the house.
The male orc stepped down from his mount and moved towards the house. He had no
need of stepping on the back of one of the slaves. He never understood the need of
his companion to use them as such. But that was the whim of women, he supposed.
Their logic rarely made sense to him. Another slave ran past the large male orc and
up the steps to the house. He tried the door but it was locked. If anyone could see
his face, because he was looking forward at the door, they would have seen a look of
dread.
"Why isn't the door opened? Do you need... motivation?" the male orc called
out. His heavy browed face had a grin. Only the poor souls in his servitude knew
what that meant. "You may speak."
"M-m-master," the man stammered out in some unknown accent. "The door is
locked."
The grin turned into a dark storm on his face. The male orc's lips pursed and
anger could be read on his dark face as easily as the white tribal tattoos against
his dark skin. "Boy!" he shouted.
At that moment, a human boy, who could be no more than eight years old, ran up
to the door. He was dressed and shackled just like the others. He also had the
beginnings of his tattoos on his left arm. The child ran at a half shamble, half
trot to the door. In his hand was a key. Despite having his legs shackled, he
managed to get to the top of the stairs, put the key in the hole, and turn. The
door opened with a click.
"Here, now." the male orc said. The female behind him looked bored with the
situation.
The little child ran to stand in front of the male orc.
"Why didn't you have the door unlocked before I got off my mount?"
The little boy looked up to his master and said, "Sorry, master. The chains are
too hea..."
The child never got to finish his explanation. The male orc swiftly back handed
the boy and sent him to the ground in a crumpled heap. None of the other slaves
looked at what was happening. They kept their eyes straight. Even the slave at the
door looked off in a random direction. The assembled crowd on the other hand gasped
in shock. A couple of men who witnessed it made to move as if they were going to
attack the male orc. The male orc, seeing that he might have to defend himself from
some want-to-be heroes plucked his axe from the holster on his saddle and stepped
forward. The men, seeing that the orc gladly awaited a fight, stopped and then
slowly began to walk backwards. When they bumped into the assembled crowd, they
turned and ran away.
The male orc put the axe back in the holster and yelled for the slaves to tend
to their mounts and the begin moving things into the guild house.
"And now, Bekog, we will mark this home as ours."
The huge male orc then plucked the female orc off of the ground and carried her
up the steps and into their new home. While the slaves worked on getting the house
in order, the sounds of the two orcs' love making could be heard well into the night.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARKERS to see
what's new. I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but THE BRETHREN
really goofed with their 1-4-0. I just can't say enough good things about
GHOSTWALKERS 2. They went 5-0-0 their first time, don't slouch, and they've got good
oral hygiene! MVP award for SWEET REVENGE? PEASANT REBELLION's proud of her after
beating PORT-A-FORTRESS and getting 24 points. Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster must be
the most popular gal in all ARKERS. She got the most challenges. (But what about
proposals?) CLYDE D'CLUB thinks his 8-2-0 and studly character is good enough to face
up to the Duelmaster. Any bets? Was that a tear I saw in CLYDE D'CLUB's eye, as he
took over Duelmastership? And wasn't IMERTA LOEL fit to be tied! Is the Duelmaster
really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of SMITHSONIAN must be getting lonely.
They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Hhmph!
What kind of warriors are PEASANT REBELLION? SMITHSONIAN, an easy team to beat if I
ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! People were asking me did IWO
JIMA REALLY challenge FELSTAVA? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded good!)
It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but FELSTAVA wants me to write about it
since she was bested by IWO JIMA. Satisfied? ANGEL FEATHER must not be a good
enough fighter to get in fair fights. She challenged POTTER SANDS. 9 is a big
difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought ANGEL FEATHER showed great
skill and promise when she lost to POTTER SANDS. All right, so I slept through it!
Big deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? TRIAL BY COMBAT let PYRAT IRONFORGED of THE CHOSEN kill KAZANDRA KRUEL
unpunished. That's really low. (Even if KAZANDRA KRUEL was kind of a jerk...)
Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do?
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. ARKERS is like such a dump, and you guys smell

Imerta Loel -- You looked like a spring chicken, and a lovely one at that, just
engulfing my island like a favored glass of wine. Gulp. Just like that, I am flat
on the ground. Wow, lady! But, a Duelmaster Lady, so Kudos! -- Iwo Jima

Greetings, all. Welcome my newest warrior, Conestoga. The Commission wanted to name
him Conetoga, but I was having none of that. -- Curator of Smithsonians

Blue Flak -- My jacket was better than your jacket. Na na na na. -- Mayflower

Leland O -- Come on, guy; I needed that win badly. You could have given it up, you
know? You are such a greedy guy! -- Plymouth Rock

A salute to the fine warrior and Duelmaster--Imerta Loel of Middle Way 11. -- Curator
and The Smithsonians

Pyrat -- Fair enough; that, then, will keep me from having to talk to losers like
Porta-Fartress. Thank you. -- Curator

Health, Humility, Honor. -- Curator

One and three? One and three! That iz neither good enough nor pleazing enough,
gladiatorz! Not get with it! -- The Z Man

Steel Spar -- May you and your brethren dwell in the hot place for all eternity! --
Zephyr

Cyclotubulous -- You made me lose my zest for life, you bugger. -- Zest

Cyclonizer -- You ruined my table of elements, plus that is two for you Frenchies, so
knock it off! -- Zinc, Z Gladiatorz

My goodness, Port-A-Fortress! You had your opportunity. Your challenge and all; you
should have won, but you were acting more like a Porta-Potty and my fine new scimitar
(9/12/3) was sizzling! -- Zork, retired four-time Duelmaster

Port-A-Panties -- All of us Z Gladiatorz enjoyed reading your well-written and funny
spotlight. You write some ungodly fiction, that is for sure. Zork enjoyed your
funny column and your braggadocio. He also enjoyed decimating you in YOUR challenge,
and slicing apart those panties only to reveal nothing underneath. Nothing! What a
surprise. The nothing befits you, though. Have a good day, Nothing. -- Zork and the
rest of The Z Gladiatorz
P.S. You were right; you should have avoided.

Porta -- Please, if you are going to try to spell it, spell it correctly--Z
Zandbaggerz. -- The Z Man

A Z a day keeps the losers away. -- The Z Man

Two-two, with our victories being over some of those pesky historical monuments from
Smithsonian. Nothing wrong with remembering history, but we're really tired of
repeating it. And then repeating it again. And again. -- those who walk the Middle
Way

Zest -- Of course I am your better. You say it as if you just discovered something
new. -- Port-A- Fortress, the Arkers Dream

Dingo -- Nice blade work! Is that formal training or does it come natural? -- Ocean

A round at the Drunken Swordsman says that Lost Minions will not fight this turn. --
Port-A- Fortress, the Arkers Dream

I am starting to see Porta's view. I killed two warriors and both stables refuse to
avenge their ally. The Broken Clan scatters like roaches in fear of facing Steel
Prophets. Perhaps he is right that Arkers has no honour. -- Pyrat

Z Man -- No, that is me stating a fact. The top guy can't get a challenge through or
an avoid, but everyone below him can? What is the point of being number one if
everyone below you are treated better. Anyway, you bore me. Perhaps I will start
calling you the Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz man. -- Port-A-Fortress, the Arkers Dream

Pain Magnet -- Okay, you little masochistic freak. How did you beat Hyppomatus? --
Ria

Imerta Loel -- So, you made duelmaster. Keep my seat warm, will you? -- Port-A-
Fotress
