His hair isn't combed because he has just walked straight from his bed to the kitchen. He is bleary eyed and barely awake. As he heads to the pantry to take out two biscuits and some honey, he sees Ocean sitting at the table with a big pot of coffee and a cup filled to the rim. "You look terrible. What's wrong?" said Porta. It was true. Ocean had huge rings under her eyes and her head hung low. "I can't sleep. These losses are really bothering me." "Don't worry. Longshot would never send you to the DA." The look on Ocean's face showed that she didn't believe him. They thought Lionik would still be around too, and he got the axe. Truth of the matter is that Longshot is not desperate, he is downright frustrated. Something had to give. "I don't know. It's just stressful. But what do you have to worry about? You are a Lord Protector now. You are immortal." "I'll tell you what. Meet me at the gymnasium tonight. I have the perfect thing to help you sleep." "Umm... Okay." Several hours later, Ocean arrived at the gymnasium where all of the gladiators of Arkers practiced. She walked through the double door entrance of the gymnasium and saw Porta standing off to the side. He waved her over to him and walked behind a row of bleachers. Reluctantly, Ocean followed. There were two of the biggest toughest guys Ocean had ever seen waiting for them. The two brutes wore the simple clothes of a labourer. The clothes were dirty. Ocean seriously doubted that they were workers. Not the kind one would guess. They worked alright; but mostly with their big ham sized hands. And the hands were usually punching into some victim over a gambling debt or slight against a boss. Pyrat ran into some hooligans this size when he first arrived in Arkers. Ocean wondered what the odds of these being the same people. They had a stretcher on the ground next to them. "Don't worry, Ocean. They are on the up and up. I use to pay them to help me practice. You'd be surprised at how many guys jumped at the chance to smack me around; even though it was with wooden weapons. Porta winked after saying the last part. Suddenly voices could be heard on the practice mat. "Okay! It's time. Lay on the stretcher. No...wait..." Porta reached into his pocket et and took out six balls of wax. "I know you two don't need any help with wax in the ears. But I need you guys to put these in your ears. Then follow my lead." The two strong men rolled their eyes and took the bits of yellow wax from his hand. They then squeezed them with their thick fingers and placed the wax in their ears. "Can you hear me?" Porta asked. Neither man answered. "Perfect! Now, Ocean, quickly climb onto the stretcher." Ocean did as he asked and her team mate waved for the two massive men to lift the stretcher. They did it without a grunt. It was as if Ocean was a feather. Porta quickly put his wax in his ear. The voice on the practice mat grew louder. "Okay, gladiatorz! We need to get into zhape! Two turnz ago, we went 1-3. This lazt turn we went 1-2... and we lozt a new recruit to zomeone named Zpazz. Who namez a warrior zuch a crummy name? Zoo! Ztop zcratching your butt and smelling your finger! Pay attention! We might have to pull you out of retirement. Okay, let'z ztart with zome calisthenicz. You definitely need them, Zest. Port-A-Fortrezz had you puffing and wheezing after only 32 minutez. I am zick of these bad performancez. Let'z go! And one and two and one and two..." "What?" Ocean asked. "Isn't that Z Man. How is he going to help with my insomnia?" Porta only put one finger to his lips to silence his team mate. He then pointed to his ear to instruct her to listen. "Listen? What am I listening for?" "...one and two and one and two... Zest! Lift thoze legz higher! Come on! And one and two and one and two..." "Seriously, what is ...what is...wow, I suddenly feel really slee..." Ocean curled up on her side. She then placed her hands together as if she was about to pray to Mantor the Bright, and then she put the hands under her head to use as a pillow. With that, she was out like a light. Porta did a little jig and clapped. It had worked. He continued his dance. "Z Man will help you get your Zs!" he sang. The two brutes Porta hired looked at each other silently debating if they had seen what had just happened. Porta then led the two out of the gymnasium and back to the Chosen's guild house. That night, Ocean had the best night's sleep she had ever had. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * As I look out at this shanty town that you call a city, I am happy. I am content. I am ecstatic. My contract with Longshot is complete. I have finally received my invite to the Isle. Yes, I know you are all happy to see me go. And no wonder. I am the 400 pound gorilla in the room. I am the dark ink stain on a white robe. I am the unavoidable truth screaming in your ear. And you classless, honourless clowns hate me for it. Whatever. Over the last few months I have been called a loser amongst other things. I'm a loser? Let's see... I started my career a couple of decades ago. As a young bright eyed novice I showed great promise by entering my first tourney after only having a 2-1-0 arena record. I entered the Novice Class and managed to go 7-3-0. After a two decades hiatus, I come back and win the title. I then hold it for four straight turns. In all I have held the title five turns. What can I say? I have skills. The saddest thing about leaving is that Longshot needs me. As long as the commission keeps sending him these high WILL retards, he will need me. When we arrived in Arkers, the Chosen were at 50.5%. Now we are 48.6% and plummeting. Maybe the commission will realize he can run something besides the mental defects that keep showing up at his door. He desperately needs a few of those golden boys that populate other stables. Since we are talking about loser...Hmmm...Trial by Combat, Shewish Bi Bistro, Star Hunter, Asgard, You Pay I Slay (Scumbags one and all), Beltazars Sett, Wild Things 2, Star Guardians, Big Bleed, the Broken Clan... all of these "teams" ran when it got too tough for them or scurried back to the tourney circuit so that they could beef up and send yet another lame duck ringer to advance with an X-0-0. I didn't run. I stood my ground. And at times took a good solid hit to the jaw while doing it. That is why I am your dream, Arkers. I am man enough to work on a craft. To work to be something better. I didn't take the lame way out and then sit around with the others patting myself on the back for doing "good work." What's funnier is that all of you tourney babies (who are in reality Lord and Lady Protectors hanging out and fighting mortals) couldn't kill me. You have your masters and advanced masters, but you couldn't kill little ol' me. How am I a loser again? Go screw, Arkers. Port-A-Fortress, the Arkers Dream * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * "Outta ma' way!" someone bellowed. Of course, whenever someone says this, people look to see who gave the order instead of actually moving. The unfortunate citizens who didn't heed the order were soon knocked to the ground. A few unfortunates also received a nice size muddy foot print on their chest and backs. One elderly man had to be helped up. The old man winced when the others tried to lift him by his arm. When they realized how severe the damage was, he was led to the local doctor for medical help. The old man carried his left arm in his hand as he slowly walked away. The left arm hung at an odd angle was noticeably swollen compared to the other arm. Despite the attack, the perpetrator was soon forgotten. But others would be introduced to him. "Hey ya stoopid 'umans! Outta ma' way!" the command went out again. This time, fewer people were bowled over. None of them were as hurt as the old man. One man got up and saw that he had hit his head on the cobblestoned street. A large red knot, that would surely be a nice, dark shade of purple later in the day formed on his forehead. And on the perpetrator went. Andeev swept the path in front of the Blood Hand Clan's house. It was still unseasonably cool for spring, but Eadskar had forbidden him to wear any warm clothing. His bare tattooed upper body was covered in goose bumps. Andeev did not mind. The alternative was a whipping. The pain from a whip was much worse than a little cold. Andeev bent with a dust bin to sweep up the mound of dirt when he heard a commotion. "Durnit! Move! Git outta ma' way!" Andeev turned to see a large mass moving in his direction. At first he couldn't make out who it was. Then realization dawned on him. Andeev dropped the dust bin and the broom and ran up the steps and into the house. "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaster!" he cried as he ran up the steps, into the house, and slammed the door. Eadskar and Beckog looked outside the window. It had been fifteen minutes since their slave ran inside with news of what he had seen on the street. The two sat and watched the person run up and down the street screaming "Outta ma' way!" What made it even odder was that the people had run inside and locked their doors for fear of being assaulted. So, the streets were empty. There was no reason to scream "Outta ma' way!" "Do you think we should go out and stop him?" Bekog asked. She was wearing a pair of black leather pants and a red top. The top was opened just enough to show her cleavage. She wasn't very gifted in that area, but she never the less enjoyed wearing revealing tops. Her hair was worn in a long pony tail that she draped over her left shoulder. Eadskar smiled as he looked out of the window. "I'd hate to stop him. He seems to be having a grand time running up and down the street. You'd think he would get tired." Unfortunately, he did not get tired. The orc couple sat and watched another ten minutes. Any minute they expected him to stop running and to enter the house. But he continued to run. Finally Eadskar opened the door and walked outside. Bekog followed. The person didn't pay any attention to them and kept running up and down the street. "Enough!" Eadskar yelled. The person running up and down the street finally came to a halt in front of the residence of the Blood Hand Clan. Eadskar's voice had boomed so loud, his neighbors peeked out of their windows to see who had made the noise. Standing before Bekog and Eadskar was a shewish giant. The giant had a full, wiry black beard and long sweaty hair. His nose was huge and bulbous. The giant wore black pants, black boots, and a grey shirt with sweat stains under the arm pits. The grey shirt looked as if it was white at some point, but constant wearing had faded it to the dingy colour it was today. The giant huffed and puffed as it struggled to catch its breath. "Oh! Der you are. I wuz looking all ovea fer ya." Bekog rolled her eyes. Eadskar didn't bother to answer. "So. A deals a deal! Right?" Eadskar got a mischievous look on his face, "What deal?" The giant stopped and looked at Eadskar. It was obvious that he was working hard to remember what the alleged deal was. For several moments he stood there with his lips pursed and his brow furrowed. Finally, the memory struggled to the forefront of his mind. "You said that we were playing hide n seek. And if I found you, you would let me stay with you." Eadskar cursed the luck that allowed the giant to remember their deal. He never meant to honour it. "How did you find us anyway?" Eadskar asked. Once again, the giant brow furrowed and this time he stuck out his tongue. This was going to be a tough memory to bring up. The giant finally remembered how it happened. Or at least he told the two orcs that he remembered. The giant had found a town and assumed that Eadskar and Bekog would be there. After looking around, one of the people of the town pointed in a random direction and told the giant that his friends had left days before and they wanted him to go that way and find them. Of course the giant didn't know he was lied to. But as luck would have it, the human had sent him to the right place. Eaadskar cursed again and tried to figure out which town he had gotten the directions from. Tobir? Lyratilan? If only he could have the head of the person who told the giant which way to go. Eadskar supposed he would have to kill him. A good blow to the skull should do the trick. Perhaps he would have to give two or three to the giant. His head was huge and thus, his skull would have to be thick and hard. Bekog knew that look on her lover's face. Eadskar was thinking of ways to kill the giant. She didn't have love for the beast, to be honest, but she had an idea. "Eddy, why don't we use him after all." Eadskar turned to face Bekog. "Are you serious? You want to use this stone head?" "Don call me dat!" the giant bellowed. He look as if he was about to cry. Eadskar had learned weeks ago that the giant didn't like the name "Stone Head." No one knew why, but it always brought about this mood. "I am serious," Bekog continued. "He is ridiculously strong and he can swing a sword." Bekog lowered her voice for het next part, "And if he dies, he dies. But I think we could use someone with his power." She then raised her voice. "And we can call him Stone...hmmmm..." She snapped her red finger nails, "Stonewall! We will call you Stonewall! A tough guy like you should have a tough name. Would you like that?" The giant beamed from ear to ear. "Yes!" He then began to hop up and down while clapping his hands. "He's about as smart as a stone wall." Eadskar muttered. "Huh?" the giant asked. "Never mind him, Stonewall. Are you hungry? You'll get your own room, you know." Bekog said as she led the giant into the house. Eadskar stood alone on the street wondering what in the hell did she just get him into. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===SLOW ARENA NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 373): CLYDE D'CLUB of PEASANT REBELLION (Nomad, mgr.) My praise to Z GLADIATORZ for their 3-0-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving of notice! ZEPHYR caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested SWEET REVENGE and was awarded 22 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, ZEPHYR put down SWEET REVENGE, causing her to lose 28 points of recognition in the process. Although CYCLOTUBULUS made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious CLYDE D'CLUB. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city ARKERS. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ARKERS these days is SMITHSONIAN. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Apparently the stalwarts of STEEL PROPHETS are catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. IMERTA LOEL take warning! You have more than a few enemies in ARKERS. At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on HYPPOMATOS. He has got the courage it takes. Witness his challenge this turn against KOTTER NAHL! The WEIRD ALCHEMY stable will be up late tonight, for indeed it was HYPPOMATOS who claimed victory in the contest, ascending 25 in recognition! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that BEKOG NECKSNAG posted a challenge against the more highly recognized JELLYBOMBER. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand BEKOG NECKSNAG was bested by JELLYBOMBER. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt! If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times already in ARKERS. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Only two and I can really plant my flag. -- Iwo Jima Ria The Caresser -- You caressed too hard! I am a delicate little thing. -- Mayflower I hope all Arkers had great success in the recent Mail-In Tournament. Good luck to all. -- Curator Health. Humility. Honor. -- Curator It was not a good Z-day or Z-round. A 1-1 is like kissing my sister and I ain't in to that! -- Mr. Z Torchbearer Tom -- You cheat! You had an unfair advantage with that unauthorized gladiatorial weapon. I hate torches! -- Zest (protesting with zest) Kal Vargas -- You shoulda took your vitamins and minerals. -- Zinc Y'all have a zippety day, now, y'hear? No doo dah. -- Mr. Z Dork... er... I mean Zork -- Why are you still talking. Shouldn't you be on the Isle polishing the real warriors' boots with your tongue? By the way; all panties are portable if you think about it. -- Port-A- Fortress, the Arkers Dream Mayflower -- Pyrat was right. You are a push over. -- Ria Sweet Revenge -- A tourney baby and an aimed blow. You beat me, what a surprise. I'd only feel bad if I fought a real warrior. -- Port-A- Fortress, the Arkers Dream Enemy Maker -- Be glad I didn't refer to you as "Enema Maker" like Ria did. :) You are one fast man. I really was trying to go first. -- Pyrat Zork -- What are you talking about? I don't write "spotlights." Oh great! You must have taken too many halberd shots to the head. You have dementia. -- Port-A- Fortress, the Arkers Dream Pain Magnet -- No, seriously, go the **censored** away. This stable has seen enough of you for a life time. -- Ocean Size This is truly a sad day. Porta is off to the Isle and there will be a big hole to fill. I have definitely enjoyed role-playing him over the years. I have always played him as an arrogant jerk. But he got a better reaction from the players these days as opposed to the ones in the early 90s. I will miss role-playing him. -- Longshot Reaper -- More like scared rabbit. Sit still and let me swat ya! -- Eadskar Space Herpe -- I don't know what a herpe is, but you are one disgusting human. -- Beckog Our congratulations to Port-a-Fortress. -- Jorja and those who walk the Middle Way Plymouth Rock -- Nobody gives US wins when we "need" them, so why should we do it for you? -- Leland Olven One-three for us, but different foes. Variety is good. Keeps us from getting stale, you know? Now if only there was some different kind of outcome, such as a draw.... -- Imertal Loel LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS RUNTLING 3 was unbelievably slain by STONE GOLEM in a 2 minute Dark Arena fight. For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There will be two different arenas: FtF-Style (DM 98): for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies Mail-in-Style (DM 99): for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions: BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.) DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur. REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters. CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In the FTF-style DM 96, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds. For DM 97, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges. TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your rollups and strategies by the Wednesday before the FTF, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament. MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest. ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill. Errors must be reported before the next turn processes. NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games. FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49. AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills. The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion. Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie. A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills. The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts. AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be conducted before transfer into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that three warriors that are designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be yours! The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make. When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
