TEAM SPOTLIGHT
It seems only appropriate that Arkers celebrates the passing of one of the greatest
philosophers of all times. Some of the more widely quoted philosophy of Yogi Berra,
the New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher and manager who died recently at age 90
follows:
YOGIisms
On his approach to at-bats: "You can't think and hit at the same time."
On selecting a restaurant: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
On economics: "A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."
On the 1973 Mets: "We were overwhelming underdogs."
On how events sometimes seem to repeat themselves "It's deja vu all over again!"
On baseball attendance: "If people don't come to the ballpark, how are you gonna stop
them?"
On a slipping batting average: "Slump? I ain't in no slump. ... I just ain't hitting."
On travel directions: "When you come to a fork in the road take it."
On pregame rest: "I usually take a two-hour nap from 1 to 4."
On battling the shadows in left field at Yankee Stadium: "It gets late early out
there."
On fan mail: "Never answer an anonymous letter."
On being told he looked cool: "You don't look so hot yourself."
On being asked what time it was: "You mean now?"
On being given a day in his honor: "Thank you for making this day necessary."
On a spring training drill: "Pair off in threes."
On his approach to playing baseball: "Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is
physical."
On death: "Always go to other people's funerals. Otherwise they won't go to yours."
On learning: "You can observe a lot by watching."
On his team's diminishing pennant chances: "It ain't over `till it's over."
On the fractured syntax attributed to him: "I really didn't say everything I said."

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARKERS games. I have begun to suspect trickery on the
part of BORN LOSERS. How else weeks like this one's 4-1-0? How else the sudden move
to 5th team? Fortune did not smile upon LITTLE DUCKS this time out who this turn
suffered a fall into 9th position in the wake of a 1-3-0 round. My praise to FOREST
GARDEN for their 3-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round
deserving of notice! OUT OF SOAP caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested SITTING BULL and was awarded 29 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, OUT OF SOAP put down SITTING
BULL, causing him to lose 18 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing
has SWEET REVENGE in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week
she's proven hers combat skill yet again. Would you believe that over half of the
old women in ARKERS seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city ARKERS. ARKERS, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy
guilds is BASH BROS SHOWER, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels.
Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part
of last week avoiding BASH BROS SHOWER. Indeed it was STEEL PROPHETS. Mighty
fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. PITCHFORK KID take warning!
You have more than a few enemies in ARKERS. At the gambling halls I have started to
bet money on REAPER. He has got the courage it takes. Witness his challenge this
turn against ZEST! 11 points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my admiration
is what REAPER must now weigh against the defeat which resulted.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Look no more for LUCKY DUCK in the arena
or on the streets of ARKERS. Hers fate was sealed in the Dark Arena. Inevitable for
one at 6-5-1. The warrior's path is harsh. For mediocrity there is but one
reward--death. This past week DAN QUEVOS, at 7-6-0, departed ARKERS forever. I must
report the passing of AUDACIOUS LEE, veteran of many duels. 6-6-0 final record Hers
was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites. Dark alleys may hide both secrets
and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil
always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

PPPS. What is with the Andorian hang up with recognition points. I would (and always

challenge versus an honorable and brave challenge. Is it because Andorians don't
measure up somewhere else and use the recognition system to compensate for something?

The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
"But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
