(Hah ha) And they could not handle the games properly. One has heaaard rumours that it was caused by some questionable shell fish that was bought from ah minotaur pirate! But I feel I should have honoured the waaarrior in questiohn. Soh, without any more delayb& *** The Restful Pastures mortuary was quiet. If one wanted to be crass, they would say it was dead quiet. Igor Svenson, the owner of the restful Pastures, had opened his business when he was but nineteen. His father, a watchsmith, had wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Igor had obeyed and was spending his time after school learning the trade. In the beginning, he found the work interesting. If it was not for one fateful day, he would still be working in his father's shop to this day. Maybe he would have struck out on his own and opened a shop in Ti or one of the other bigger cities. But it was the funeral of Phillip Rose that changed all of that. Phillip was a long- time friend of Igor's father. The two had played together as children and their friendship had continued until the day of his demise. Phillip was a merchant and a successful one at that. His caravan travelled across Alastari trading goods such as furs, liquor, and furniture. Despite the protest of his wife, Phillip would accompany his caravan on some of their journeys. He said he did it to make sure the goods arrived safely. But the fact of the matter was that he did it to see the land. He had married young. And even though he loved his wife, he didn't get a chance to do anything. But she didn't know about, nor care about his wanderlust. She was worried about the bandits that prowled the roads and country side waiting for caravans such as his. When he was younger, it was different. He could handle a sword and he was sixty pounds thinner. But now he was an old man who loved his rich foods and naps. During one shipment, Phillip's caravan was attacked. It happened when they were travelling across an open plain. He was tasking some brandy to Tarrgir in the north when some of the 'Ravens' came from out of nowhere and attacked them. Phillip Rose and the caravan raced across the plains in hopes of escaping. But the Raven's had faster horses and easily outpaced the heavier wagons and surrounded them. The coachman pulled the wagon to a halt, locked the wheels, and held his hands up. Phillip, realizing they were outnumbered did the same thing. One of the bandits promised that if they surrendered, they would be allowed to safely return home. Since they had already lost, why not just let them have the shipment and return to Arkers with wounded pride and a few Eagles in debt. Soon the caravan realized that they were better off fighting. The Ravens had lied. As soon as the wagons were secured, the bandits fell upon the doomed merchant and his crew. The body of Phillip and was soon discovered along with the torched remains of the wagons and the butchered remains of the crew. The scavengers had hacked the corpses so badly, they were barely recognizable. But after the mortician got a hold of Phillip, he looked perfect. The viewers were amazed at the condition of the body. It didn't look like he had been hacked to pieces at all. The family thanked the mortician and they actually looked relieved that he was going on to the next level in some form of normalcy. That was it. Igor had made his last watch. He wanted to bring joy to families that had lost someone just like the mortician. His father was disappointed, but he understood. Soon after the Restful Pastures was opened. The doors to the mortuary had been long closed and locked. The work day was done and Igor Svenson was at home sitting in his favourite chair. He was nodding at this time and he had a glass of sherry in his hand. This always happened when he ate too much of his wife's beef stew. The doors may have been locked, but Igor tended to forget a window that was near the formaldehyde. This is where he preserved the bodies and the open window cut down on the fumes of the chemicals used to do that. This window was not common knowledge unless you worked for Igor. Unfortunately for the snoozing owner of the Restful Pastures, his two assistants had discussed the possibility of leaving the window unlocked. Both were well into their pints and were in no condition to do anything but sit in their drunken stupor and reassure themselves they had locked the rear window. The drunken Swordsman was crowded and extremely noisy, someone had overheard the conversation. And that someone was opening the window now. Carefully, the window was opened and a black boot poked through and placed on the stone floor. A jug was place on the floor and the rest of the intruder came through. He decided to leave the window open and allow the cool night air to come in. As he felt around in the dark, he banged his knee on one of the tables used to prep the bodies. "Hells! Excuse me there, sir. One is terribly sorry to have bumped your bed. I guess one can safely call it that. But as you, one's old bean, can see, it is hellaaa daaark and I have had more than one's fair shaaare of spirits. "Oh! That will leave ah bruise, I must say." Of course the cadaver did not answer. It simply lay in the gloom and on the table with its torso open and held in place with pins. The cavity of the torso was completely empty. There was a hint of preservative coming from the body. The workers must have decided to go to the Drunken Swordsman in the middle of their work or this was common practice for the mortuary. Whatever the reason, the drunken intruder moved around the table a little better. His eyes were becoming accustomed to the gloom of the room. The figure continued to fumble around in the dark. His hand had gotten tangled in what he hoped was a sheet and he roughly pulled to free it. Finally he felt his hand hit a candle. The candle fell over onto the table, and the silhouette of it could be picked out in the moon light. Next to it was a rectangle box. The intruder managed to pick a match from the rectangle box and, once the candle was upright, light it. B Soon the darkness was chased away by the glow of the candle. It was surprisingly bright all things considered and things became more visible. The silhouettes that look liked skeletal fingers and jagged edges became cups holding tools and tables and chairs. The mortuary wasn't that big. Even thouh it was officially one of the mortuaries for the city. But Igor was subcontracted to handle some of the commission's work. This he did with great joy. Not out of some morbid fascination like one would accuse him of. But it was an honour to lie to rest the warriors of the arena. He even had a chance to work on one of the orcs that were in the city. She was a real challenge because the wounds were so severe. Her opponent, the Star of Destiny, had been generous with the ferocity of his attacks. Plus that brute of a leader they had, Igor thought it was 'Dead Scar', was threatening his life if he did not make her beautiful as she was alive. She was an orc! How beautiful could she be? There was a book shelf off to the right and it was stuffed with books on embalming and other thoughts on the trade. There was a table with two chairs and a jug on it. Across the room was a door that obviously led out to the displaying area. To the intruder's left was a wall of drawers. This was what he was looking for. He picked up his jug and slowly moved over to the drawers. The drawers were stacked four high and ten across the wall. Each drawer had a metal card holder and a bit of paper with a name scribbled on it in ink. The intruder began to read each card. It was pretty easy going. Whoever had written the place cards used a meticulous hand and did not blot or smear the ink. Finally, mid-way through his search, the intruder found the drawer he was looking for. Fortunately for him, it was second from the bottom and he would not have to bend over or squat down for what he was about to do. He placed the jug down and pulled the drawer open. It rolled easily on its well-oiled wheels and came to a stop with a thump. The intruder moved the candle over the body that was inside of the drawer. It was Audacious Lee. "Hilleaoh daaarrrling." The intruder said. "It is me; Maquro Doomaxe". He placed the candle on the cadaver's chest and picked up the jug from the floor. "This is hoh it ends, eh? All of that skill and promise. Now look at you, one's old bean, laying stiff and paaarky in ah drawah resembling an old pile of cluhthes. I once talked to uhthers at ah tourney about your skill. You, one's old bean, knoh. We were simply talking shop. " Marguro took the cork from the jug and looked around. There was a stool next to a sink that was next to the window. He did not notice it when he had climbed through the window. But there is was, The stool would have made his climb a lot easier. The orc walked over and grabbed the stool and brought it back next to the body of Audacious. He sat down on the stool with a plop and poured two mugs of wine. He carefully placed one of the mugs on Audacious body as well. "Sorry love. we aaare lacking in tables here. Noh, where was one? Oh 'eaaars! I don't mind telling you, one's old bean, that I am absolutely gutted with you for doing this. No, really. Hoh daaare you! You were my mountain summit. You, one's old bean, were my holy grail. You were one's goal. If I could beat you, one's old bean, I would have completed ah spiffing feat. You were ah highly skilled opponent that inspired myself to doh bettah." Marquro took a big gulp of the strong wine in his mug and refilled it. For a while het orc sat in the mortuary, his candle silently burning. In his wine soaked mind, remembered their fights. The way Audaciously could control the entire thing and not once allow him to gain complete control of the fight. He laughed at the thought of the image of him staggering around on the sands like an oaf with two left feet. "You did giz myself ah propah thrashing, didn't you? Well, one had best be ohn one's weay. Gods speed to you, one's old bean, ohn your journey to the afterlife. Meay your god welcome you, with open aaarms." Marquro pushed the cork back into the top of the jug and stood. The room seemed to sway and he fought to stay upright. His stomach felt like it was doing flips. If he did not leave soon, he would be sick in the room. There was no need to be disrespectful, so he turned to leave. But before doing so, he turned to Audacious Lee one last time. "You, one's old bean, meay keep he mug. I am sure the Drunken Swordsman won't miss it." Marquro finally found his way back to the window and climbed back through it. He still forgot the stool that would have made the climb a lot easier. But he did remember to shut he window. The next morning Igor Svenson and his two assistants arrived at work. The assistants reeked of alcohol and they looked like they had been drinking all night. Well that would be a lesson to them. They had responsibilities and should really know better. But what they saw when they opened the embalming room sobered them up. The room looked normal except for the stool used to reach the higher shelves, Igor was not a tall man and needed something to step on when getting work material, was kicked over on its side, and had rolled into the middle of the room. One of the drawers of a recently deceased gladiator was pulled open. Closer inspection of the corpse revealed that she had an empty mug resting on her chest. That was odd enough. But the thing that sobered up the assistants was the wine coloured smile on her lips. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. This Duelmaster achievement is dedicated to the noble warrior "Doom," who was needlessly killed on the sands of Arkers. He is missed. -- Reaper, first of many Duelmasters from the honorable Ghostwalkers 2 stable SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at PEASANT REBELLION, who went down to 6th from 15th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 3-2-0 outing, HEATHEN HORDE has advanced 6 places in the rankings. Advancing in the rankings was BB PUBLIC TRANSIT who went from last turn's 39-47-1, to this week's record of 42-47-1. Hey everybody, watch out for CORRECT CHANGE, who flew up 25 points in the rankings after mashing BOSTON TEA PARTY like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was FELDSPAR, who dropped 16 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with ZIP IT. EADSKAR DA'BAD got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No doubt he was more than anxious to kick REAPER's tail out of the throne! Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was BLOODY HAND CLAN's EADSKAR DA'BAD, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by REAPER. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARKERS arena. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid SERIOUS LEE, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ARKERS really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch THE CHOSEN's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from SERIOUS LEE. And who is this THE GYPSY you ask, with 93 points and a 10-9-2 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had ETON THE STALWART challenge up 28 points in the rankings to take on GROUND SHEET? I heard ETON THE STALWART laughed all the way to the inn as his new point total of 83 was posted in the arena. I guess beating GROUND SHEET really pays! Well, it looks like HALIN STORMBREAKER wasn't happy with last turn's rank, so he went for broke by challenging up 28 points. No guts, no glory. Some advice to HALIN STORMBREAKER. Please don't challenge up 28 points to fight a 10-9-2 fighter like, say THE GYPSY. (Okay, so it may be a little late). HELGA LOARWEN of THE CHOSEN had better have a good reason for challenging down 13 points in a challenge which she won. I thought HELGA LOARWEN showed great skill and promise when she won victory over LORD SHADOW. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks.
