TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The rains had stopped last night. This was good because no one, not even an orc,
wanted to stand in a down pour to say good bye to a fallen comrade; Gutsag Bakwort.
The stable of the Bloody Hand Clan stood around the massive pine coffin in silence. It
rested on a pulley system that held the coffin over a freshly dug grave. In the bottom
of the grave, rain water had pooled. But it was not enough to warrant climbing in and
bailing out. To the side eight burly men, the pallbearers for the funeral, stood next
to a wagon with a two-horse team of Clydesdales whinnying their dissatisfaction of
being out in the cold and the wet. It was spring, but there was still a bit of cold in
the air. Winter refused to go peacefully in this part of Alastari. But it could be
worse. They could be standing in the cold and sharp winds of Snowbound. Their winters
were like a house guest that over stayed their welcome. Three months of cold usually
turned into eight or nine.
The total number of attendees were only five; two goblins and three orcs. One would
have to be blind not to notice that four of the assembled left a space three-men wide
that separated them from one orc. His name was Eadskar and he was big. His body looked
like a mass of corded muscle topped with a massive head with a heavy jaw. That jaw had
two thrusting teeth that reminded one of a boar's tusk. More than once the two goblins
assembled snickered and commented. The mocking was ended when a fat female orc boxed
them both behind the ears. Her name was Maud. She was the unofficial mother hen of the
stable. Everyone knew she was not one to trifle with.
They were all dressed as presentable as possible for orcs. Some wore black leather
boots and black britches tucked in. The goblins wore white shirts and had daggers
tucked into sheaths at their waist. Maud wore the same. But she had decided to wear a
red blouse as opposed to black like Ugarg had. Or white like the goblins had. The
blouse was opened just enough to show the beginning of her cleavage. The shirt was a
pull over and didn't draw too much attention to her ample gut. She carried her war
hammer across her back. She had worn some of her nicer jewellery too. More
specifically her earrings. The female orc's ears had been pierced twelve times; five
on the left ear and seven on the right. Each piercing held a small gold hoop.
Ugarg was not so extravagant and he only carried a short sword at his waist. It was
not sheathed. It was simply tucked into his belt. Maud and Eadskar had groomed their
hair. Ugarg had simply used a little rain water and ran his fingers through his thick
hair. He only did this when Maud warmed him about someone named Eadskar. Ugarg looked
over at the massive orc again. He did not look so tough standing there in his fancy
suit of chainmail. It looked expensive though. The same went for the full helm with
the massive horns he had tucked under one arm. The others had mention Eadksar used a
battle axe in the old days. None was better they said. But now he had a great sword
strapped across his back.
"Braaaaaaaaap!"
All assembled looked to the sky and thought it was time to wrap the ceremony up before
the rain began again.
"Anyone goin' ta say any thin?" Maud asked. She kept the part about Eadskar chasing
off the priest and Gutsag's fans to herself. It made no sense to chase them off.
Especially the priest. At least he managed a quick blessing before running for his
life.
Eadskart unfolded his arms and moved towards the coffin. He placed his hand on the
coffin and it slightly swayed.
"Yoos had ta go an git yer self-killed, didn't ya Gutsy? You would 'ave loved it on
the isle. Dey don't have slaves like here at da guild house, but tings are nice der.
And dey send ya on des misshuns. Those are great. Yoos git ta go ta different places
an kill people fer da Lady. Dat is the best part."
There only silence and the sound of distant thunder. Eadskar looked up as if he was
waiting for lightning. Wearing all of that metal made his a little uneasy. Not that he
would tell the others that.
"If only..." Again, a peel of thunder. This time it was louder and it seemed to be
getting closer. "...If only yoos had been more careful. Yoos would still be ere
workin' on yer invite. I would love ta 'ave a friend on the Isle. I know we 'ad our
differences. And yes, I tried ta kill ya. Even though yoos stole ma' chance ta avenge
Bekah's death. I know yoos wuz only tryin' ta protect me. Dats wat a friend does. Dats
wat yoos wuz. A friend. "
"Braaaaaaaaaaaap!"
This time the rumble was louder. So loud that it caused the coffin to vibrate.
The coffin to vibrate?
Eadksar looked over to the pallbearers. "Yoos. Yes! Yoos git yer lazy bums here now.
Now!"
Eadskar began pulling the coffin with all of his might away from the hole. The eight
pall bearers came and helped guide the coffin and lower it down onto the muddy ground.
The man who had used the pulley to lower the coffin to the ground had picked up a crow
bar and began to pry the lid off of the coffin. When the lid was removed, the orc and
eight humans moved away from the open coffin. All had their hands over their noses.
The smell from the coffin spread quickly and the other orcs did the same. The goblins
gagged. They looked so comical that it was hard to tell if they were joking or
serious.
Gutsag sat up from his coffin. The orc was not dressed. The stable thought it was a
bad idea to waste good clothes on him. He was dead after all, right? So his big hairy
belly and chest was exposed for all to see. Now they saw this as a bad idea. They
collectively prayed to whatever gods listening for him to not stand up.
"Yoos suppose ta be dead!" Eadskar shouted.
Gurtsag yawned and scratched his hairy belly. He let loose another gust and yawned.
"Wat? Why do I 'ave ta be dead? He only hit me in da fore 'ead."
"Wit a mace!" Maud exclaimed. The foul odour had dispersed and she could breathe
again.
"Yeah. But ma 'ead is da second hardest part of ma body. Ma belly being the 'ardest."
"Why didn't you tell the embalmers?" one of the human pallbearers asked.
"Well... I was restin'. Dat mace really did 'urt and dat hospital place wuz nice an
quiet. So I slept."
The orcs and goblins laughed. Partially at the joke but mostly in relief that the
portly orc was back.
"And dem guyz at da hospital..."
"Mortuary." One of the pallbearers corrected. Eadksar glared at him and the man took
several steps away from the orc and told himself to keep his mouth shut.
"Yeah. Mort-chew-ary. Dey are so nice. Dey left me half a chicken and a big jug of
spiritz. The only problem is the spiritz make me toot."
And the portly orc let out another one rip and everyone began to gag again.
Realisation dawned on one of the pallbearers. He spoke with his hand over his mouth,
"That wasn't spirits. I think you ate someone's lunch and drank a jug of
formaldehyde."
"OH! Dat must be one of dem fancy drinks like brandy or port. I needz to git me sum of
dat in town. Anyway, letzs go home."
Gutsag stepped out of his coffin and made his way back to Arkers. The rest of his team
mates followed. They were still happy to see him.
The pallbearers turned their heads or closed their eyes. After that wretched smell, no
one should be made to lay eyes on that nude orc.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Excerpt from the journal of Halin Stormbreaker
I finally did it. I have gained the title and received my invite to the Isle. I cannot
begin to tell how happy I am. Years ago, I set out with a challenge to my skill. I
vowed to enter the arena in the fashion of the by gone days and fight with morning
star and shield. But not on occasion, but in every fight that I had. There were times
that the commission made a clerical error and some sweaty page came running up to me
with a broad sword to fight with. I won but it was too easy. But a morning star! That
is a weapon of kings. The sound of the spiked ball as it whooshes through the air. The
meaty thunk that it makes as it crashes into your opponent's skull. I admit that I
found great satisfaction when I heard a wail of pain from my opponent while they
writhed on the ground. That is true power. The morning star should be respected and
feared!
Now I have been given a new weapon and I have to say that I like it! I look forward to
training with it and improving my skills even more. Immortality tends to make even the
most mediocre fighter a god compared to men.
My final challenge in Arkers will be against Humble Lee. Yes, I know that he is the
third in ranking. But I want to see him get a shot. Rumour around Arkers is that he is
truly a humble person. Plus, we have matching records. (Ha-ha)
Praise to Mantor the Bright,
Lord Protector Halin Stormbreaker
SPY REPORT
Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! Nothing is certain in ARKERS, with changing
loyalties, changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--BOOK OF THOMAS.
What's a move up by 4 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for
celebration, according to BOOK OF THOMAS. Good things come to those who fight well,
as BLOODY HAND CLAN can attest, moving up by 0. SMITHSONIAN had cause to celebrate,
after GOLD RUSH got 22 points by beating RAL STORMBREAKER. Win some, lose some.
Speaking of which, GOLD RUSH was winsome, after beating RAL STORMBREAKER and seeing
him lose 16 points. What can be a greater victory? THE DEALER has taken his place
as the top, as ARKERS' new Duelmaster. So who was the warrior seen charging into
immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in HOYT
FOUNDATION are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of THE CHOSEN, so did that sorry team
shy from HOYT FOUNDATION Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good
oral hygiene? Whatever it is, JHERI BLOOMERS is the most challenged warrior. Them's
the breaks, MAUD STONEGUT. Expecting fair challenges from HOYT FOUNDATION is
evidently too much to ask. JHERI BLOOMERS subdued MAUD STONEGUT with a point
difference of 36. So this is what ARKERS calls a duel. This will make an
interesting tale.
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Never one to advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see BOOK OF THOMAS
retaliate against THE CHOSEN in bloodfeud! Questions are being raised about the
disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in ARKERS would I
avoid!
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me. Do not
despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

To the Good People of Arkers (and the Muddy Hand Clan): Defensive Lee was pulled TOO
EARLY! Alas, my cries of moral outrage fell on deaf ears with the commission. He
leaves at 20(+4)-18(+3)-13-9(+2)-21(+1)-3-11(+1) with naught but an Expert in Parry

Congratulations on the invite. -- Eiger
I know I am not as good of a manager as everyone else, but I decided to post Halin's
stats. Maybe this will be a lesson on how not to design a wall of steel.
HALIN STORMBREAKER (8-5498): ST=16 CN=13 SZ=8 WT=16(1) WL=16(1) SP=6 DF=11. He has a
Master in initiative, a Master in attack, an Advanced Expert in parry, and one or two
skills shy of experts in everything else. Halin's learns were all over the place. He
started winning when I stopped running him like a wall of steel and started running
him like a basher. He will retire on the Isle. -- Longshot
