DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
The Prancing Pony was usually full the night before the gladiatorial games, and
tonight was no different. Various groups gathered here to eat and drink. to celebrate
birthdays and anniversaries, to start fights, and to end them. It was the kind of
place where everybody knew your name, but no one knew when you'd left, who you were
with or where you'd gone.
Cruel Lee lifted a glass. "To the Duelmistress! May her reign be long and
glorious!"
Humble Lee's reply was drowned out by laughter, the breaking of glass, several
punches and a body or two hitting the floor. "Then I sez ... I sez ... Yoos not
'umble. Yoos stupid! Stoopid Lee! Hur hur hur." Laughter erupted again as those
around Ugarg Snotsnik took up the chant of STOOPID LEE! STOOPID LEE! The vicious orc
smiled broadly -- the effect was terrifying -- took a deep, deep drink of his
oversized flagon, closed his eyes dreamily, and proceeded to pass out. This was not
good for the furniture, as the orc's bulk passed easily through the table, and bounced
lazily off the opposite bench, until the stone floor caught his mass and held it.
"May my reign may be long enough to get me graduated! I'm taking a real beating
in the press for missing last turn." She waved in the direction of the Arkers
Gazette, open to the Editorial Page. Outgoing Lord Protector Halin Stormbreaker had
penned an Op Ed accusing of Humble Lee of "essentially giving up being Duelmistress."
"I think I need another drink. Waitress! Another Midori Sour, please! Thank
you. Yes, yes. The Muddy -- I mean Bloody. Bloody! -- Hand Clan account. As usual.
Thanks!"
Humble Lee looked around suspiciously. "Did your spies ever provide any intel on
who or what plotted to keep me from fighting and gaining the throne?"
"No, not yet. But it's unusual how many things went wrong." Cruel Lee ticked
them off on his fingers. "Alarm clock turned off. Shoelaces tied together. We were
all of out of your morning tea, which never happens. Armor covered in honey, and that
bear! It wasn't easy getting rid of him. Devilish work, I say."
"Perhaps." Humble Lee gazed at the beautific sleeping face of Ugarg Snotsnik.
"Perhaps."
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, ARKERS? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, HOYT FOUNDATION, since Z
GLADIATORZ took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now keep the
taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for SMITHSONIAN, whose
2-1-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 6th. Ha! OTHERWOOD turned their 2-2-0 turn
into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get
put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 3-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, BLOODY
HAND CLAN, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all
terribly impressed to see WILY GIT win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk,
tsk, PILGRIM beat MISS MATCHED and MISS MATCHED lost 16 points. You're breakin' my
heart. Looks like ARKERS has some guts at least, HUMBLE LEE the Duelmaster was this
turn's most-challenged warrior. GUTSAG BAKWORT challenged ARKERS' Duelmaster for a
shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as GUTSAG BAKWORT
takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh.
Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys
win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. HOYT
FOUNDATION, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of
cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was OTHERWOOD. Ha ha ha ha! I notice
UGARG SNOTSNIK challenging down 31 points to fight THE BEGGAR, BLOODY HAND CLAN
doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult to honor. Question now is, will
ARKERS accept this sort of tacky behavior? UGARG SNOTSNIK beating THE BEGGAR. The
insult, the....yech! SCRAP METAL was challenged by one of HOYT FOUNDATION's warriors
this turn, with TOOTHLESS LOVE having a lead of 17 points going into the fight. And
golly gee, TOOTHLESS LOVE bested SCRAP METAL. Aren't we all surprised and impressed?
I guess I can give a little credit to CHESHIRE MOON of OTHERWOOD for challenging up
by 25 to GOLD RUSH. CHESHIRE MOON lost to get 57 points of recognition.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Gee, SERIOUS LEE, ain't it past due for sending CRUEL
LEE Dark Arena? What took ol' '10-8-2' so long? Hope? Ha ha aha ha! We're all
going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that
later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ARKERS. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are
