The meeting had disintegrated after Karolvingar's melodramatic announcement, and
most of the Bandit Princes had gone home, or at least, had gone elsewhere. The demon
looked after them mournfully. "They don't believe me."
"No," Doreg said. He poured wine into the glasses of himself and Zrof, the only
two humans remaining, and offered the bottle to Karolvingar. "I don't know if you
drink wine?"
The demon accepted the bottle. "I have developed a taste for it," he admitted.
Examining the label, his long ears twitched. "An excellent vintage, I see!" He
selected an unused glass and poured it full of wine.
"I don't see how we can have a Chaos War," Doreg said as the demon drank.
"Neither do the others, and probably for the same reason. This is what the Grey
Witch is all about: preventing one. That's what the arena system is for, besides,
and we have an arena here, so--?" His tone invited Zrof to speak in his role as
arenamaster. "Is the decline in arena activity a sign of weakness on the part of the
Grey Witch?"
Zrof shrugged. "About the Witch, who knows? She's been keeping to Herself
lately. As to the decline in activity, who knows? Some people claim it's a sign of
Her strength, that she has all the Lord Protectors she needs."
"There are thousands of them," Doreg admitted.
"But not thousands she can call on. They're an independent lot, gladiators,
though you wouldn't think it when they meekly accept orders to step out onto the
sands and fight for their lives. But once they get to the Isle--or get INVITED to
the Isle, since many don't go--they get large notions of their own importance. They
have their own agendas, and they don't give much thought to Hers."
"She is very strong," Doreg said. "She broke Castle Midnight, after all."
Zrof smiled slightly. "Did she?"
"It's in the Chronicles--!"
"And if it's written down, it must be truth? There are other records than the
official chronicles," Zrof said, "and they tell the story from other angles--and with
other heroes and villains." The arenamaster transferred his one-eyed gaze to
Karovingar, who had kept silence. "And it may be Castle Midnight that we need now?"
The demon nodded. "We need the true Bandit Prince of Zukal, the first and
greatest one. Not the one the Grey Witch holds prisoner, who is insane, or are both
insane, if he--they--are still split, but his father. The Demon Prince. If he still
lives and can be reached."
"A DEMON Prince of Zukal?" Doreg set down his wineglass as though it had become
a serpent that might bite him. "I never heard of--"
"Most people never heard of him," Zrof agreed. "It's very OLD history, dating
back before the most recent Chaos War, to the time at the end of the Chaos War before
that, before Alastari existed. Back when the Grey Witch was a young woman with a
dream." He paused, and his gaze weighted Doreg. "It isn't a story that should be
repeated. It isn't safe to know it."
The younger man drew himself up proudly. "I don't ask for what you don't want
to tell," he said. "Your word is enough for me to act on. But if you choose to tell
me this, know that I am a Bandit Prince of Zukal, and I can keep secrets."

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ZUKAL, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Nothing is certain in ZUKAL, with changing loyalties,
changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--BLUE MOON. Say what you will
about blind luck and dirty fighting, but BLUE MOON will tell you 371-488-9 is nothing
to laugh at... In the interest of complete reporting, FANGS got a 2-3-0 last week,
on their first time around. LETTER BOMBS had cause to celebrate, after E. LECTER got
19 points by beating ROOT. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and
practice more, after losing 8 points to DENTINE. (Discrete enough, ELEAZAR?) Now I
can't insult BLUE SUEDE, as he has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new
Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) So who was the warrior seen
charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic
problem...
And how sociable are ZUKAL's warriors? Come, let us see. Everyone is famous
for fifteen minutes, and KITTY LITTER is it right now. Most challenged warrior.
Isn't ARENA FELINES proud! COPY CAT found himself challenged by a warrior 18 below:
ADINO. ADINO of COVENANT ARMY kept his wits as he was beat by COPY CAT.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Never one to advocate
diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see BLUE MOON retaliate against ARENA
FELINES in bloodfeud! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body
parts in the arena. A certain tavern in ZUKAL would I avoid!
Do not think spyreporting in ZUKAL is the highlight of my life. More important
duties call me. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for
ZUKAL? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Arena Felines -- I guess I should apologize for rubbing your fur the wrong way...but
I won't. -- mgr. Zwingli
Kitty Litter -- I never thought a sandbox log golem would be so active. -- Agee
Tuna Breath -- Take the old broomstick like a good poll cat! -- Shammah
The Kung-Fu Master tried to step all over my shoes, and that really annoyed me. I
was, perhaps, a little, ahem, severe with him. But he asked for it. Damned fool was
nothing but a hound dog, and he DROOLED. -- Blue Suede
Oh, the Userous Merchant, JUST who I wanted to see. What a wimp! -- Azurita
And to round it off, an Ambitious Guard who laughs at me. What a day. -- Blue Haven
Ten non-DA fights, and only TWO of them involved two managed warriors? This is not
good. In fact, this is going to cause a lot of trouble down the line, when all these
warriors with inflated records from facing only standbys find themselves facing a
REAL opponent, such as at a tourney. -- Jorja
Adino -- (whimpering) All I stole was a loaf of bread! I was starving! Don't be so
mean to me, I'm not really vicious. -- Linjon, Convicted Thief
Eleazar -- I know he was a fool--anyone else would have given up after the third boot
to the face--but you have made an enemy of the Beggars' Guild none the less. --
Padrian, speaker for the Beggars' Guild of Zukal
Dodo -- If I didn't have important stuff to do, I would've stayed and let you wear
yourself out, you idiot. You fight like a stupid extinct bird. -- Mulsart, only
Convicted because a dummy like you stepped in front of me and took too long to move
when they were chasing me, so they caught me
Copy Cat -- (severely) If you do not belong to the Beggars' Guild, you will be well
advised NOT to attempt to copy what you learned from your opponent. -- Padrian
Blue Haven -- After a YEAR of this, that's the best you can do? Maybe YOU need a
little ambition, boy. -- Del Borasan, a Guard out to Better Himself
Azurita -- That match would have gone differently had I been allowed to use my weapon
of choice. Money! No one can beat me in the fine art of financial fisticuffs, and I
would soon have had you beggared. The chance may yet come, too, if you don't keep up
the payments on that armor. -- Mackobin, and what's wrong with a little usery, eh?
Blue Suede -- Wearing that ridiculous powder-blue suede into the arena is so dumb.
And if you call that singing, well, there are people around who will disagree. --
Tjorvek, Master of Kung-Fu and related un-armed styles, but I wouldn't actually MIND
having a weapon in the arena
Top Cat -- You may have won (the fight was rigged, wasn't it?), but wait until that
bite I gave you starts to fester! -- Alourisienelle, and why do you think they call
me a "venomous" concubine?
20 April 2005
I have returned after a five-year absence. I expect all tithes, gifts and bequeaths
to resume as normal. -- Magic Man
