Riztab:

Torric stood in the doorway and shivered for a moment, but no longer. He still
had the OLD records to find. It seemed unlikely that the wizard would consider an
encounter with a ghost as a fair reason to renege on that. After all, what did
wizards care about ghosts? They probably had coffee with ghosts every morning.
Ghost coffee. He'd encountered a lot of that around the arena. Mostly just a strong
smell and a stain on the cups, but you knew it was coffee and nothing else. The
Ghost of Coffee Past.
He held the lantern high with a shaking hand and examined the hallway.

Shishzar of Riztab's Dark Arena stood on the Stone Golem's shoulders and peered
over a ruined wall. The wizard was easy to spot, for one who had been raised by
demons. The wizard was plotting something, hoping to acquire something of power, or
waiting to catch a fellow wizard bending and boot him in the rear. That was what
wizards did. They weren't particularly mysterious.
But what in the name of the Nine Rings of the North was TORRIC doing? There
were MONSTERS in that lake, and in the old buildings, too. Torric had to KNOW that.
Why would he risk--? Ah. The wizard was blackmailing him, that had to be it.
Finding out what the Spymaster had been up to that made it possible to blackmail him,
now, THAT would be a difficult and intriguing puzzle to solve.
He kicked the Stone Golem once on the left ear and waited while it shifted a
yard to the right. This vantage point wasn't much better, but it did put him near a
break in the wall. He could get through and in amongst the action--if any action
should occur--more easily from this position.
The ghost was not, at first, detectable as such, but only as a vague disturbance
in the ether. Such disturbances were not uncommon over the Old Town, but since this
one came out of the building where Torric had gone in, Shishzar focused his ectoptic
vision on it. In this ghastly light, he saw a figure bearing some resemblence to
Tokken Makrok, the effective ruler of Riztab, though clothed in an antique style.
The ghost was headed toward the center of the New Town Citadel, where Makrok had his
headquarters.
As this was the most interesting thing to happen so far tonight, Shishzar
immediately abandoned his observation of Torric and the wizard in favor of following
the ghost.

Zukal:

The Bandit Prince Doreg joined Arenamaster Zrof One-Eye at the city's Delta
Gate, on the east side of Zukal. He didn't say anything, but his glance around at
the absence of gladiators was pointed.
Zrof just shrugged. "An unwilling companion would be no help at all."
"True. I just thought...." His voice trailed off. He wasn't sure what he'd
thought.
"The only manager who responded," the arenamaster said, "told me she hoped your
liver was eaten by a demon, and she wasn't going to send any of her people along to
be eaten in your place."
"Jorja," Dorge said, sighing. "I made... a big mistake with her."
Zrof nodded. "So it would seem. They're called 'learning experiences'."
     "Too bad they're not retroactive!"
"No doubt, but that would involve some very peculiar time-looping and probably
destroy the continuity of existence. Assuming there is such a thing as continuity of
existence, of course." When they were out of sight of the city's walls--and there
were no outlying houses on this side of Zukal, just a few ruins where the active core
had drawn in from its largest expansion--Zrof turned off onto a side road that was
fetlock deep in mud for their horses and very slow going.
"Where are we headed?" the younger man asked.
"There is a tower out here, I'm not sure exactly where--it moves around, but I
shouldn't have trouble finding it." Zrof was silent for a moment. "Near Arvat
somewhere, I think."

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ZUKAL brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see RETRIBUTION win a fight and gain 11 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
RETRIBUTION beat ZULOR and ZULOR lost 10 points. You're breakin' my heart. Going
for broke or broken, our Duelmaster DEATH challenged this turn. And if variety is
the spice of life, ZUKAL may be getting bland, as COPY CAT stays top dog in the city.
Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys
win their fights? Skill? Ha!
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. DEATH was challenged more times this turn than the
Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ZUKAL's
morgue. More variety. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is
developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the ZUKAL arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. I see
the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens
