Blue Blotto looked wistfully at his bottle, which was still a quarter full, then
turned away, squaring his shoulders. "Okay, let's do it," he muttered.
"You don't have to come," Ultorino repeated.
"Yes, I do have to. Someone has to keep you out of trouble."
Ultorino snorted. "Oh, like YOU are such a sterling example?"
Blotto looked down his nose at his shorter teammate. "Some insults I ignore,"
he said. "Unless you plan to stand around talking all night, I suggest we go NOW."
"All right all right all right," Ultorino muttered. He buttoned his coat and
pulled a knit cap down over his ears; the night was a cold one. Slung his sword's
baldric over his shoulder and picked up a stout staff, because there was dirty work
afoot in Zukal. At least there would be moonlight to see by. He opened his mouth to
make some final comment, some great exit line, but none occurred to him, so he shut
it again. Exit lines weren't everything, and if he thought of a good one later,
well, there'd be other exits.
They slipped out the rear door of the guildhouse into an alley full of shadows.
Ultorino knew it looked furtive, but how else to be private? This was the kind of
neighborhood that noticed everything and embroidered it freely. Why Jorja couldn't
get them quarters in a better part of town...? Well, okay, she said it was because
they weren't good enough to afford better, but maybe if they had a better place to
live, they'd live up to it and fight better. Circular thinking either way, of
course, and what was wrong with that? Some of his favorite concepts were circular.
Ultorino sneaked a look at Blotto, looming beside him. At six-four himself, he
wasn't used to being loomed over. It was intimidating. He tried to imagine Blotto
living in a better neighborhood and couldn't. Some things just weren't going to
happen, no matter what. Oh, well.
A shadow twitched in the alley. "Hsst! Over here. What took you ssso long?"
"None of your business. Did you get what I asked for?"
"Yesss. Ssseventy-three Bent Lane. Over the candle ssshop. It'sss being
watched."
"Thanks." Coins changed hands, clinking faintly. The twitching shadow faded
into other shadows and melted away completely.
"Bent Lane," Blotto muttered. "That makes this place look classy."
"You want to encounter mysterious strangers," Ultorino said, "you have to go
where they are."
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ZUKAL brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, 70'S CHILD, since BLUE
MOON took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. FANGS turned their
1-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this,
and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but don't get
cocky, BLUE MOON, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see NAHTALEE win a fight and gain 16 points,
terribly. Tsk, tsk, DENTINE beat WOW and WOW lost 13 points. You're breakin' my
heart. Our last turn's Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to KHALHUMS DWARF, and STEEV
has made the way for a new Duelmaster! With STEEV clearing the throne, THE
MONGOLOIDS of NAHTALEE takes a proud seat as ZUKAL's new Duelmaster, by virtue of
recognition points. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you
think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. BLUE MOON, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were
this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who
led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was
70'S CHILD. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, BLU JON was this turn's
most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ZUKAL's
morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
There's got to be a better place in ZUKAL to get a drink than The Blue Boar Inn!
Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of ZUKAL.
