Valamantis:
Ka D'Argo looked at his crew of "explorers" and shrugged. They were a motley
bunch, drawn from several teams, managers, and arenas, people he'd found passing
through Valamantis on their way from one place to another. Mostly from the arenas
where they were fighting--most of them were still in Basic--to some holiday spot for
a week's recreation. Most people assumed that gladiators always stayed home,
practicing relentlessly, but that was the way to dull your edge, not improve it. He
glanced at Arenamistress Sitalva, but she shook her head slightly. It was his show,
apparently.
He took a breath and began. "You see the towers of Old Valamantis, raised by
blood sorcery."
Everyone turned to look.
Smeds of The Black Company, Mordant, sniffed dismissively. "Second class
stonework," he declared. The Dwarf's gesture took in needle-thin towers webbed
together with bridges like dreams. "Not really stonework at all; that's built with
magic. Was built with magic in the beginning."
"Stupid," agreed Shamu (The Watchmen, Cliffhome). The two Dwarves nodded at
each other. "Unreliable. Not like good honest stones that stay up whether you're
paying attention to them or not."
Goblin (The Taken, Kaltos) frowned at the no-longer-ruined city. "You mean
somebody's got to pay attention to that all the time, or it falls down?" he asked in
a voice like gravel grinding together.
"Not EXACTLY," murmured Lavender Lance (Colour Guards, Illis). Quickly, before
the two Dwarves could protest, she added, "In principle, yes, quite possibly. But
nothing is EVER that simple. What I've heard--I'm no mage, but there's always talk
of magic on Illis, you understand--is that a spell can be put into a THING, like,
well...like the sound is in a bell, maybe. Or like the light is in a candle. Under
the right circumstances, it comes out without anybody having to think about it right
THEN, and it keeps on existing as long as the circumstances last. I suppose I'm
explaining that very BADLY, but--"
"But we follow it well enough," Sputter (Joka Masher, Dwes Eg, Lord Protector)
finished. "So there might be a THING that we could break and the towers would fall
down, hmm?"
"Bringing the towers down again might be a good thing," Ka D'Argos interjected,
"but it won't solve the problem here, even if we could find the right spell-holders
to destroy. That won't get rid of the people."
"Zombies," Groblin growled contemptuously.
"Not entirely," Sitalva said. "We haven't gone into the old city, but we've
watched it closely, and there are some people who don't appear to be undead."
"How can you tell?" Smeds demanded. "Just because somebody's not falling apart
doesn't mean he isn't a NEW zombie."
"There are live and potent Folstrom wizards in the old city," a new voice said.
The pleasant tenor seemed to come out of empty air but was quickly followed by a man
in a dark blue robe spangled with silver stars, his hair bound back from his youthful
face by a silver band. He bowed slightly. "Tensekai," he introduced himself, "known
here as the Silver Mage. Bringing down the towers without first destroying the
Folstrom would be futile, a waste of energy. And not easy, either, as the spells
that uphold the towers are well guarded. The important thing is that this situation,
unnatural and abominable as it is, gives us a chance to undo a great error out of the
past. We can destroy the Folstrom this time, rather than merely driving them off."
"Correct me if I'm wrong," Lavender Lance murmured, batting her eyelashes at the
mage, "but I HAVE read a little history. I thought the Folstrom weren't destroyed
because it wasn't possible? They were too strong for the Forces of Good to bring
them down completely."
Tensekai nodded unhappily. "That's true. But we've had three millennia to
study further. We have new arts and new allies to bring to the battle this time."
"And what might the Folstrom have learned in three thousand years?" Ka D'Argos
asked.

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in KOLACT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for THE JERKS, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 8 into
17th. DEVIL'S ADVOCATE stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 6 space move up
the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! The QUBIT guild
has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where
this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, REPENT fought NEVENGAR and gained 26
points and contributed to THOROUGHBREDS' 2-3-1. GRAND SLAM has lost to GABOON VIPER,
falling 14 points, while helping make THOROUGHBREDS a 2-3-1 turn. VAPID VANNA
challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone THOROUGHBREDS'
warrior. We should ask VAPID VANNA about the thrill of victory, and what being the
new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to ask. By the way, was that
our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at Don Corleone's?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the MEGAWARRIORS stable was the most
avoided team this turn. Come on KOLACT, what are you afraid of? And avoiding
MEGAWARRIORS more than any other team we find DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. KOLACT, are we going
to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was
THUNDERSTRIKERS' warrior RIVERWIND. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, POINT GIVEN from THOROUGHBREDS challenged up 22
points to fight SULTAN OF SWING from the TERRAPIN STATION stable. POINT GIVEN
perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was bested by SULTAN OF SWING and ended
up with 74 recognition points.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? I guess it was coming sooner or later, MEGAWARRIORS has lost
NEVENGAR, and KOLACT is bound to miss him. For a little while, at least. RIVERWIND
has departed KOLACT, leaving THUNDERSTRIKERS without their 2-10-0 warrior. Question,
just what was his team doing at the taverns last night? We'd like to remind certain
teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's
considered rude.
I like this place, KOLACT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in KOLACT, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

Sir Plutz -- Let's not go for three in a row. -- Cyclone
Vulgar -- Wow, after two losses, I thought you had my number. I think I'll keep
avoiding, though. -- The Upright Man (the warrior)
Tycho -- I'm a half elf? Gee, that's news to me. I guess Assur hasn't gotten around
to telling the commission my real race. Wouldn't it be easier if the commission
actually asked for the information rather than guessed? Can I ask you for a rematch?
-- TUM
All -- Sorry for not contributing much. I'll continue to try, but no promises. I'm
here for a single warrior who isn't all that exciting to begin with so it is hard to
motivate myself to write personals every turn. -- Assur (managing Alastarian Idol)
Sultan -- I bloodfeuded Sir Plutz last turn and it didn't go through. Neither did
the one in DM4 last turn. Conspiracy?? -- Matrix
Sir Ingomyelic -- What's with all the defensive learns in that fight? Both of us! --
Nevengar
Upright -- I guess you owed me that one huh? -- Vulgar (proud loser of 2 straight
fights)
Die Nasty -- Get over it. -- Gracie
P.S. As a double-bladed hussy, or so I've been called, once, I understand some
things are harder to get over than others. <grin>
P.P.S. Next time, be born before you die, grasshopper.
Quietus -- The weapon seemed ineffectual enough...then you broke it. Drat! -- Gracie
Pikachu -- Gesundheit. Pikachu? Are you some kind of Peeking person? -- Ron
Bling Bling -- We know you lost because you were focused on getting back to the
guildhouse to pack for your trip to the Isle. Otherwise there's no way you would've
let horse-face there beat ya. In fact, it's not just him, all those guys from that
squad look a little funny. Of course, it's easy for us to find fault...we're all
cute cuddly little guys that everyone loves, everyone except those on the other side
of the arena from us that is. We Lightning Deckers pack quite a whallop when we set
our mind to it! -- Electrabuzz
Pika Pika!! -- Pikachu (translation -- I agree!)
Sir Pent -- Ah, NOOOOO! Not the asp! -- Cleo
Repent -- Not till my head stops aching. My momma done tole me, never make position
statements while your head aches. -- Tycho
Flagg -- I think it might be a bad idea to have a name like that. At least, that's
the word going around, because of some psycho lord protector being out to murder the
manager of that name. Could be you'd get hit by mistake. -- Lunelle
Jumping Viper -- Ack! But a jumping venomous spider would be even worse. Barely. --
Bailey O'Bead
Ah, a Cult Member. Lots of fun, Cult Members. No one CARES what you do to them. --
Trojan Roc
StormBlade -- The path of a storm and it's destructive work is or are clearly a case
of malign fate. -- Bailey O'Bead
Vulgar -- I rest my case. -- Cleo
Gogo Patrol -- Don't feel bad just because you lost to a lowly AB on your challenge.
In my last 7 arena fights, I fought, get this, 7 lungers. Style advantage aside, I
won 6 of those matches, 5 of which were opponents' challenges and 1 which was mine.
Not bad, if I say so myself. -- Sir Occo, inflating chest as only the windy one can
Cleo -- The least I can say is: thank you. -- Sir Pent
Gracie -- My, you looked good teaching me all those skills. -- Quietus
Octavian -- Well done, twice in a row. My only fear is: can I survive the 4th
bloodfeud? -- Qaeda, Al
Art Ery -- Interesting name. Nice learns, BTW. -- Quadriceps
Riverwind -- If Octavian leaves me alone this round, I've challenged you unarmed,
open-handed. We'll see. -- Qaeda, Al
Still -- Floyd has been awfully quiet lately. It'll be interesting to see if he
speaks up re: blankity-blank. -- Sultan, glad THAT little bugger is gone

Has anyone seen it in print that the "Goat" is leaving the "Cartel"? There were
some diplos to the effect of a special branch of the Cartel being formed, like secret
societies, governmental agencies and alliances certain agendas are developed. To
obtain the desired effect of any agenda only key personnel can be used. The "Goat"
is "Cartel" so until you see it with me announcing that I am not Cartel, remember,
"The Agenda of the Core is for you to fight for." I hope this stops the confusion.
