DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Fans come up to me?!? It's a side of the island I didn't know existed. For
instance: this little fight-fan ship-wright invites me by to see his collection, and
I don't believe I've ever met the little types like. Very acerbic. His "jokes"...
salty...casual salty. Anyway, he keeps a piece of the launching bottle from every
craft he's built and let set sail. One by one he built them. Some seemingly wanting
to be built more than others. In helping launch them, he always managed to be some
how down below the ceremony stands, supervising. Bow on blocks and rollers, rising
up and up above him. Standing by until the bottle was smashed, the ship lumbering
away to sea, and he then quickly picking up a single individual-looking shard of that
particular christening bottle. So, I honored, he brought me by to see his pieces of
glass. Annnnd to be storied. With wild tales involving his "children." He was
animated...and as each chunk was displayed, it's ship's story delivered, I came to
see he really was creating life...as he saw it. Also, does his own investigating.
Nightly seeking out reports from the waterfront sailors on how the boats "acted" or
didn't "act" as the case and situation may have been. What dedication and nice
glass. I was properly regaled by the end of the evening. -- Lady Divan, Duelmistress
P.S. I asked to see his own ideas on private yachts. Practicality meets opulence.
We're talking: I want 4 masts...he's swearing for my other requirements I'll be
"head's up" with 3, wallowing with 4. We're talking.
SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to BIG TROUBLE, as they are pushed
from the coveted top team spot by the TERRAPIN STATION stable. For every winner
there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at SIR AGLIO, who went down
to 3rd from 9th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 3-1-0 outing, MONGREL HORDE
has advanced 4 places in the rankings. TERRAPIN STATION is no joke as it posted a
4-1-0 week advancing from 2nd place to 1st place. Hey everybody, watch out for
REVERIE, who flew up 21 points in the rankings after mashing SLIME GIGGLE like a
melon. Keep your eye on this gal. And falling like a basher in the top ten was
SLIME GIGGLE, who dropped 17 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout
with REVERIE. Drawing on all of hers experience as a 13-8-0 warrior, QUIFF went for
the Duelmastership against LADY DIVAN this week. It's a proud day for the QUBIT
stable, as their warrior, QUIFF, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. An apple a day
keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay.
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad TERRAPIN STATION? Big bad
TERRAPIN STATION. Big bad TERRAPIN STATION. KOLACT's afraid of the big bad TERRAPIN
STATION. Tra la la la la! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch QUBIT's act in the
arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from TERRAPIN STATION. And
who is this CYCLONE you ask, with 107 points and a 21-18-0 record. Ooh, the tales I
could tell! Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying TALON (BOOKIE)
will do. He challenged 19 points down to trash GAFFER. Definition of petty: TALON
(BOOKIE) won victory over GAFFER, a mismatch of 19 points. THE QUESTION of TERRAPIN
STATION had better have a good reason for challenging down 9 points in a challenge
which it won. I thought THE QUESTION showed great skill and promise when it subdued
TROJAN ROC. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). The audience likes blood and there was
plenty of it covering MICKEY MITE as he was driven to an early grave by QUO VADIS of
the QUBIT. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena
with you and see what happens.
Well, there's the manager of the KOLACT giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's
best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Its been fun, and
I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens,
I'll be leaving-- The Unknown Spymaster

All -- It's been a while since a warrior of this stable has graduated. Only thing I
can say is, it's about time. For those who care, Cyclone looked like this, 13-12
(+1)-12-15(+1)-17-8-11(+1). Favors a Broadsword, which I don't think he used more
than once, favors mod OE/ Low AL. He likes to bash...hope not with a broadsword. 76
skills with a Master in Initiative, attack and parry. I enjoyed his fights, he's
been fun. -- Zeus
Slime Giggle -- A little out of your league eh? I understand why you did it.
Sometimes FE don't mean a thing. -- Cutthroat
Tycho -- No offense about what I said to Slime Giggle. Sooner or later that's gonna
get you an invite! -- Cutthroat
Lady Divan -- Impressive, but leave me alone. -- Stormblade
P.S. You're no lady.
The Upright Man -- It was a nail biting experience, and it had the crowd on their
feet the whole time! I believe there are warriors who we can only defeat with luck,
otherwise, its a sure loss every time. I say this with modesty, and from my own
experience. -- Stormblade
Meteoric -- A three round discussion of a motion, annnnd, you lose. -- Hot Head
Positive Fury -- I got my eyes on the stars, and I'm aiming higher. -- Larry
Queda, Al -- Gotcha in the breadbasket. Right through your lunch. -- Ivan
Mashminaplp
Sultan -- S'funny how things have a way of taking care of themselves. Long may we
wave. -- Still
Sir Plutz -- Well...DARN. And I've already checked, and Nick says I'm not worth
wasting a strategy change on, either. Darn. -- Tycho
Z -- Short, but not sweet. Ouch. -- Mickey Mite
P.S. As Nick says, then again, I mite not.
Cyclone -- You eclipsed me on that one. -- Bailey O'Bead
Wild Dog -- Even a mime knows better than to throw a roc at a wild dog, after all. --
Trojan Roc
P.S. Especially if it might call down the rest of the pack of mongrels on me.
Hot Head Hairy, er, Harry, although a lot of hair might make your head hot -- Well,
no, I didn't call myself a fighter. It was Nick who did that. I just called myself
a falling rock. I think I've been mis-cast. -- Meteoric
Lady Divan -- (shocked look) You...smoke a big cigar? But I thought ladies only
smoked small, slim cigarettes in very long holders of ivory or jade. -- Lunelle
P.S. Are you any relation to the Davenports?
Hoffa-meister -- Done doggin' for a while? Welcome back to Kolact! -- Sultan
Negative Fury -- There, that should be enough. After all, Sir Win Less was aptly
named, though he did manage one win. Go in peace. -- Sultan
Tycho -- What!? An upchallenge like that, a win, and no skills? Get 'outta here. --
Sir Plutz
Gutboy -- I hate fish feet. -- Sir Realistic
P.S. The fight report had it wrong: I did not APPEAR exhausted.
Still -- Re? to all: huh? -- Sultan
P.S. Don't believe it for a minute.
Wicked Sunshine -- (grin) Not to worry, Gutboy got me back. -- Sir Realistic
Al Qaeda -- Al, Betty here. If you be my body guard I will be your long lost pal.
See I did a bad thing. I challenge this guy with horrible jokes named "Two Jacks."
It's a regular dog and pony show. I was aiming low with a modest KD, and nothing was
hitting hard or penetrating. Then, all of a sudden a voice says "he fights with
deadly bloody," so hit the poor guy eight times about the head neck. Just run some
interference. Keep ol' Ivan from Mash'n my apple. -- Thanks, Wicked Sunshine
Six Demon Bag -- Two things wrong with that fight. First, I'm supposed to win, not
you. Second, and more importantly, if I am gonna lose, you're supposed to give me
enough time to ooh and ahh my fans before you win. Get it right next time! -- The
Upright Man

My fellow duelists I come before you bearing a sad and unfortunate message.
Several months ago our group, the Vendetta Cartel, had lost contact with one of our
friends. Since he was in contact or correspondence on an almost daily basis there
was concern amongst us. With some research two of our members discovered why contact
was lost with him.
On November 10, 2004, Richard Hammes was taken from us in a senseless act of
violence during a robbery attempt at a friend's store where he sometimes worked. He
was watching the store so his friend could go home to tend to his son who had taken
ill. You may have known Rich as Abarsis, The Slaughter Priest ; richh10 on the RT;
or gameogre on the Duel2 messageboard. You may not have known that he spent 13 years
serving the United States in the Navy.
Rich dearly loved this game and all it encompassed. He may not have been the
best or most experienced manager but he loved to interact with others and was quick
to offer advice whenever anyone asked for help. He was always kind and gracious and
tried to strengthen our game, often by helping new players feel welcome or give them
a chance to compete. With his prolific posting I know that I am simply speaking the
obvious about what he did for our game. Many, like me, were drawn to him, perhaps
for his kind nature or his sense of humor, and it appears he lived his life as he
played this game. Always willing to help or do right by others.
I realize that he had many friends outside the VC so I will include the link to
the news story in case any of his other friends would like to know more of what
happened. We're all dealt a hand in life but it's not the strength of the hand
you're dealt but rather how you play it that really matters. Rich played his hand to
the very best of his human ability and for this I admire him greatly. I know we all
choose to like or dislike managers but I believe deep down we are all good and
decent, in this game, and will drop party (alliance) lines and will show the proper
respect.

Rich was taken from us all to soon and with so much left to offer the community
around him. He spoke of a desire to run a contest on the Duel2 site which I hope to
uphold in his name. Some of the people I have spoken with think it would be a nice
gesture to do one final good act in Rich's name, though it could never match what he
would've done within his community, for his community of San Diego. I hope that with
this contest we might raise a little money to donate to an appropriate charity within
San Diego in his name.
In conclusion I send a message to Rich:
"Rich, though I'm sure you gathered this I never really told you how much I
admired you and what a friend I considered you. I thank you for being my voice of
reason and always reminding me of why we both loved this game so much! You have
taught me one final valuable lesson in learning more of you. There are things far
more valuable in life than material possessions such as character and kindness. That
nothing going on in your life means that you cannot find a way to be kind and giving
to others. We always spoke of meeting someday and until we finally do know that you
will live on in with me and the rest of your brothers and sisters in the Cartel:
Master Darque, Kat, Bum, Sensei Jan, Maximillian, Hammer, Fizban, Firehawk, Phat
Phat. You increased all of our enjoyment of this game, you were a true ambassador of
Duelmasters, and the game will not be quite the same without you. A farewell battle
cry from the ZalCon: 'Confusion to our enemies'. May your soul rest in peace, my
friend."
Should anyone wish to correspond about Rich feel free to contact myself, or
anyone else within the Vendetta Cartel.

Be it known throughout Alastari that Hammer is no longer a member of the
Vendetta Cartel alliance.
A difference of opinion with another highly respected member of the VC due to my
recent vocal actions in DM 47 can only be resolved by my resignation from the VC as
of January 29, 2005.
I leave of my own accord, in good standing with all members and with no hard
feelings towards anyone in the Vendetta Cartel.
There was a time when I felt that my membership in the VC made the alliance
stronger. I know that my resignation today makes the Vendetta Cartel a stronger
alliance with my absence. -- Hammer

On behalf of the ILLUMINATI Confederation of Alliances (The kLk, CHAOS, Inc. and The
Company of Brothers) I would like to express our sympathies concerning the tragic
loss of Rich Hammes to both the DM community and to the real life world. Surely our
loss has been Heaven's gain. -- Talon Darkhart, deeply sorrowful
