"It's infamous!" Ardane, spy reporter for Andorak, scowled and drew back his
arm to throw his goblet through the window at the crowd outside. Then paused to
drain the contents before resuming the about-to-throw-it position.
"Now, now, it isn't THAT bad." Desiree of Darkholm, always the voice of sweet
reason at these meetings, laid a hand on his, smiled, and guided the goblet back to
the table. "It's just a little mistake, you know."
"Ha!" Debby Tonte of Free Blades stabbed viciously into her drink with an
umbrella. "That's easy for YOU to say. The Delarquans aren't complaining."
"Of course not." Galen of Talahya looked faintly envious as she pulled a chunk
of pineapple out of her glass and began to nibble it. "That's because the Delarquans
are THE Masters of Kung-Fu."
"You think some managers are complaining," Olaf Modeen said, "you should hear
what the GLADIATORS are saying. All these rumors about the Aimed Blows having
'special enhancements'..." he shook his head. "I know it isn't true, you know it
isn't true, the top managers know it isn't true--"
"Of course it isn't true!" Ketchum, spy reporter for Crysalis, matched scowls
with Ardane and said, "If ANY one style was going to get a special enhancement, it
should be--"
"Not now, Ketch," Olaf said. "Nobody gets, nobody has gotten, nobody WILL get,
special enhancements. That's always been the rule, and we all know how the Greywand
hates changes. The real problem--"
"Try telling that to some of the managers," Debby muttered, peering into her
glass for more fruit. "They don't want to hear it. Every time I turn around, some
manager is claiming that someone got a special change and, you know, HE didn't and
it's all unfair."
"The REAL problem," Olaf said firmly, over-riding her voice, "is explaining to
all the second-rate Aimed Blows why they haven't received any of these 'special
enhancements' they keep hearing about."
"There aren't any special enhancements," Ardane growled. "None. Just managers
who noticed that the Kung-Fu Master is a lot more dangerous than anyone expected, and
have put YEARS into the study of Kung-Fu and learned how to really USE it for their
own gladiators."
"Saved a lot on weapons, too," Ketchum murmured.
"But people keep complaining," Debby Tonte said. She fished one last piece of
fruit out of her glass and stared at it dubiously.
"There WERE no special enhancements," Olaf said. "There ARE no special
enhancements. There WILL BE no special enhancements. It's all a matter of deep
study and skilled management."
"Like anyone's going to believe that!"
"They have no choice," Ketchum said. "If no 'special enhancements' were given
out, then none can be taken back. It is the way it is. What's the point in
complaining because the sun rises in the east?"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Sir Cophagus -- Wanda's warned me to lay off flaunting my position. She says it
unbecomes me. She also thinks there should be a charm school refresher course for
newly crowned DMs. No sullying the honor through happenstance slipups of conduct
that could have been prevented. (if only some of us weren't such slobs) But I yam
what I yam. -- Waldo, Duelmaster

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon KOLACT, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! THE MOONDOGS? Who? SPRINGBORN is the top team these
days, buddies! THE MOONDOGS had cause to celebrate, after PERSEA QUELL got 15 points
by beating DANGEROUS CRIMINAL. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, MOTHBALL was
winsome, after beating LIRVEL MOORN and seeing her lose 6 points. Those who hoped
for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by QUIZNOS, of QUBIT, who despite a 12-8-0
couldn't overcome KOLACT's Number 1. So who was the warrior seen charging into
immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
And how sociable are KOLACT's warriors? Come, let us see.
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Questions are
being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain
tavern in KOLACT would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat!
Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for KOLACT? On that giddy
note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Icarus -- And proud I am to have made your acquaintance. Nice arena, and that
suiting up/warming up area...nice. And the island of Kolact, it's nice too. And
that breeze pounding the north end of the spit...nice. (nice and brisk) -- Buffalo
Bob

Cynica -- Nice?!? Not talking about you. (least not in my book) There are all
these ready-made adjectives for describing you and somehow that one just didn't make
the list. -- Mothball

Sir Cumference -- Look at that big lug, hogging the throne. Languishing. Totally
ignoring the pounding I gave him in practice duels the other day. (for his own good)
Not a care in the world. Typical piker. -- Wanda, the atypical Piker

Mothball -- (recoiling in repugnance) How can you have been matched with me? It is
wrong! -- Cynica
P.S. It must be that someone on the arena staff seeks your death. Is it the Userous
Merchant? The Dangerous Criminal? He's a half-elf and probably capable of any
barbarity. But whoever it is, the culprit must be discovered and punished, or no
gladiator will be safe from such manipulations!

Quiznos -- Oh, I dunno, I bet I could kill a houseplant by burying it in the sand. --
Lirvel Moorn

The Fratsfa Slave will take part in no plots against gladiators. I have put the fear
of steel into him. -- Persea Quell

The Osksi Noble is slippery and not be trusted. Despite his feeble abilities in the
arena, he has social and political power. He man be dangerous. Watch this man. --
Nestor Ordh

Buffalo Bob -- You half elves are too sneaky. And you're DEFINITELY out to get me.
I can tell. -- Icarus

Dawn -- That's the way it goes in the arena. -- Icarus
