Iaye:
Raoul, once known in the arena at Aruak City as In Gerfel We Trust, looked
around the waterfront and frowned. Even though he and his companions, Jeri
Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just
come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a
mess.
"What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger.
The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose
up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as
though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or
ghosts did it, if you can believe that."
"Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too."
"That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story
already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names.
A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can
still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed."
Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that
they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena,
he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and
look for help.
Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts,
but who knows? Does it matter?"
"Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other
business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--"
"Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody
can touch him."
"That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here
now?"
"No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as
much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years
back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man
can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?"
Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a
member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's
been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a
dangerous man."
"Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?"
"Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the
assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a
position to coerce--"
"Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled.
Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail,
it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their
own'."
"With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri
muttered.
"This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I
mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?"
"Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--"
"Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished.
"But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan
protested.
Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't
pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his
own files for 'encouraging' his citizens."
"And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the
Black Book. We've got to burn it."
"But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul
finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city-
states over there."
"I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff
pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth."
"Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like
the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians
are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it
as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know
anyone with a boat?"
"Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that
far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But
it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?"
"Why should they come back?" Raoul asked.
"Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether
they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are
things going crazy everywhere?"
"Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they
are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle
of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around.
Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?"
"I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a
time, and our job is to catch Peranis."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hi, Aruak,
I think if I keep winning this seat, I'll quickly run out of things to say. In case
you're wondering why I didn't get my invite, it's because I've been to just one
tourney where I did only so-so. Jhordeal says I'll probably need three or four more
FEs before I go. I don't mind the wait, just please let me get there.
Luck to all,
The Ardiventi Chef
SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARUAK CITY to
see what's new. BEAVERS ARE FOR had like a really albendranius week! Those hunks
got a 3-1-0 and wound up as 9th team! I couldn't believe it. Did PETE'S PIKES
really go up by 13? If only those guys didn't have so may missing teeth... Gross!
Really, just how far can one team drop in one round? 'CROSSED UP dropped 12, which I
think's more than all the other teams combined! Cut this out and put it in your
scrapbooks, GIRO PELETON! 'Cause they got 3-1-0 and moved up to 13th! This new team
BAD HEIR DAY shows promise, and that's all I'm going to say (for now). MVP award for
TALIA GREENBOLT? KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE's proud of her after beating ABEGAIL LACOUR and
getting 26 points. Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think THE
ARDIVENTI CHEF should let JUGHEAD be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about
it. I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want
photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. THE LIVING
DEAD was ARUAK CITY's most avoided team. Is there some award for that? I don't know
what VIEW ASKEW's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from
THE LIVING DEAD, that's fer sher. Can ASIAN LANCEHEADS' CHINESE HABU be more popular
than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same? See if I ever
talk to MAKING HATS again! FERONA HEARTFUL was so low when He challenged he. Hhmph!
Is this how BEAVERS ARE FOR advances, by having their members (MAKING HATS) fight
people that are really below them (FERONA HEARTFUL)? For sure, I was holding my
breath when I found out PIOTR WYSMYK challenged DANIEL JUSTICEBLADE. After all,
haven't 'CROSSED UP and KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE had a long standing duel in ARUAK CITY? It
wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but DANIEL JUSTICEBLADE wants me to write
about it since he was subdued by PIOTR WYSMYK. Satisfied? BRUCE ALMIGHTY must not
be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He challenged BUBBLES. 11 is a big
difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought BRUCE ALMIGHTY showed great
skill and promise when he dispatched BUBBLES. All right, so I slept through it! Big
deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey! Quit laughing! Just because NAVEL BARBARIAN had 4-7-0 was no
reason for GERFEL'S FRIENDS to send him to the Dark Arena! Stop it! It was kind of
sad, seeing old ABEGAIL LACOUR stumbling around the arena, before TALIA GREENBOLT
finished her off. Oh well! What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be
out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. I had
a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Gen. Puerco -- Muchas gracias por el bienvenido, seqor general! -- Darkfist
Armalias -- It was either a face in L.A. circa 1996 or Tempe around 1998 I think. I
seem to recall you being in the Air Force and having a girlfriend with you who played
DM.... -- Darkfist
Double Jointer -- Well, shoot. If only I hadn't had such an active desp. strategy I
think I would have won that one. -- Needle Nose
Tony McAlpine -- You just don't give up, do you? -- Segallion
Chinese Habu -- Looks like we traded results that time. I got more skills and the
loss, and you got the win. Shall we keep this up? -- Zlatina
Sumthing Painful -- Whoa, that was a big match up for me. Luckily I was up to
sustaining my attack. That was the first time I've used that weapon too, what do you
think? -- Abegail
Gerhalt -- Now THAT was a crazy fight. I'll give you credit for that one. Oh hey,
do you know that your last name means beermaster, and master in Deutsche (German, for
you uneducated folk peeping in on this conversation) is spelled 'meister'. -- Hawke
Puerco -- I know, took me long enough to get us back up to 50! Whew! -- Tankesh
P.S. We probably just jinxed us again!
Lukarian -- You should have said something earlier, then I could have spanked you
again at your request.... In all honesty, I think the only thing you'd be shooting
for would be to learn since I totally outclassed you when I was here. Sorry to brag.
: ) -- Shairlindria
Condolences for John J Wuss...may he rest in peace. -- Adie
Ardiventi Chef -- Congratulations again! More free ones for you at the Bulldog Inn!
-- Adie
Adie -- Truly I am honored. If you spoil me too much, it will be hard to NOT be the
Duelmaster of Aruak City! -- Ardiventi Chef
Hitch -- Hey, shouldn't you have left by now? -- Ardiventi Chef
Leeta -- RIP Mr. Wuss. -- Generalissimo Puerco
Lukarian and Armalias -- I didn't know I risked a challenge from your team. After
all, I was told we were allies.... -- Ardiventi Chef
Ivy -- It may please you to know that your favorite golem, The Fratsfan Chef,
received the whiffle as his #1 weapon. -- Generalissimo Puerco
Papaiz -- Yes, welcome back to Aruak! Revisit Fratsfa while you're at it. That
place needs the bodies. -- Generalissimo Puerco
Broccoli Casserole -- Your downchallenging is not appreciated here. -- Generalissimo
Puerco
Been awhile so just to respond to Puerco and Tankesh: Puerco, I didn't want to run
Space Ghost outta' the game altogether but I definitely wanted to give him a message
about the Ghostals' killing habits. Tankesh, no I was the Red Wings fan (from Detroit
area) who rooted for the Ducks to justify the Wings loss! -- Street Legal
Sneaky Pete -- I'm not great but I'm no pushover. Slow learning is frustrating but I
seem to be ahead of the curve! -- Tony McAlpine
Nila Sundancer -- A messenger yes, but I'm not sure for who yet! All I know is that
I am just trying to survive, as my style is oft beleaguered! -- Tracii Guns
Segallion -- I was sure I had you there, nice comeback. -- Tony McAlpine
Navel Barbarian -- That was a very interesting fight, I just wish you had taught me
more! -- Tracii Guns
Kedro -- Considering I have so much trouble beating anybody, I have to be VERY
selective in my challenges. Not saying anything personal, I just figured you are a
bit less mobile then the average of your style! -- Alan Holdsworth
Nugatory -- You surprised me with your defenses, I was not sure I would pull that one
off! -- Randy Rhoads
Q.O.D. -- Is a 29 points gain teams on the move a world record for fifth place on
cycle 464 in Aruak City? -- Carny
Broccoli Casserole -- (anxiously) Does it have cheese? If there's no cheese, I'm
not touching it. -- Jughead
P.S. But hold the onions.
Broccoli Casserole -- Ah, a tricky number you have there. Beware it doesn't end up
smelling like burned rubber. -- Jughead Trilby
Glleellmann -- Butter tonics give me colic. -- Hitching Post
Alan Holdsworth -- Gods, someone with a record even worse than mine! -- Kedro
Yo-Ho-Ho -- Unfair that you began the fight by throwing the bottle of rum at me! --
Nila Sundancer
Pistons McGee -- Well, that's one way to retire, I suppose. Are you any relation to
a colleague of ours by the name of Flitter McGee, over in Zorpunt? -- Ghost of John J
Wuss
P.S. I don't consider it wussy to be killed by a devastating blow to the abdomen
followed by another to the head.
Zlatina -- I'd rather pull YOUR jersey over YOUR head. -- Kedro
Segallion -- I don't know where my thoughts are going, either. They bought a ticket
to Zorpunt, but didn't get on the Shuttle, so I just have no clue. -- Nila
Hitching Post -- You are too winded too early. I strongly urge you to purchase a
case of "Dr Butter Tonic." -- Glleellmann
Nila Sundancer -- I demand the arenamaster test your sanity. -- Yo-Ho-Ho
Ardiventi Chef -- Don't count your invites to the immortality until the cake is
baked. -- Carny
Raudy Rhoads -- So close I was; you will never know. -- Nugatory
Needle Nose -- I threaded the needle. -- Double Joiner
Parnak -- I planned to go 20-0 you know. -- Killa Kupkake

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
