Adeolar wrestled with the spell, her entire attention concentrated on it. The mirror spell was PASSIVE, it shouldn't be doing this! She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then stepped back mentally from her work. Magical devices were no different than mechanical ones in some ways, they could get "stuck" on a certain phase of operation. The mirror spell had simply gotten "stuck" on looking at Krael. All she needed to do was deactivate it, then start over with a different target. It was a simple matter. It should have been a simple matter. She couldn't shut the spell down. She took another deep breath and ran through the shut-down sequence again. There were currents of unformed magic swirling around her now, and most of them were from sources she would not touch. Blood magic, from the arena. It seemed to be working against her, reinforcing the mirror's resistance, if such a thing was possible. Dammit, the mirror wasn't alive, it didn't have a will, couldn't consciously resist...but that's what it felt like. Or that someone she'd been looking at had sensed the spell, seized it from the other end, and was trying to use it to look at HER. She was distantly aware of power--not a lot, but some, enough to help--coming from outside her and reinforcing her efforts. More distantly, she realized that it was Segallion and Nila. That power she could use. She wove their offering into her own efforts and made a third attempt to shut down the mirror spell. The resistance continued, maybe increased. It was hard to be sure, because her head was beginning to ache with the effort. Not good! If she made a slip through weariness, the spell could escape her completely. Another strand of power, faint as starlight but just as pure, joined with hers. Absolutely precise. Familiar. Shania! The united effort bore down on the critical points of the mirror spell. Not the points SHE had chosen. *I can't hold this link for long* Shania thought to her. *But without it, I couldn't have reached you at all. The high magics are fading with the Eyes, Adie. Soon they'll be gone--* "Leaving nothing but blood magic and petty witchcraft," Adie agreed grimly. "I know." *It's worse than you're thinking.* Shania's thought was urgent. *When there is no high magic, there will be no protecting circles, demons will be unbound, all the things that Sheila Greywand holds at bay will be loosed on Alastari! Gates will open as though they'd never been sealed. ANYTHING could get loose! There are residual traces of Old Chaos in Alastari, and if they aren't bound--* "Disaster!" It didn't occur to Adie to doubt Shania's assessment. In matters such as that, the elf seeress was unmatched. "But without high magic, how can we hold the bindings? You don't suggest WE use blood magic?" *No. Everything done with blood magic is tainted by it. Even for a good end... the result will be twisted. Always.* Adie was aware of Shania's shudder of revulsion. "There aren't a lot of other sources--" *I have a plan--it would take too long to explain now.* Shania's mental voice was fading. *I'll be there soon.* The link between them shivered. *Break the mirror!* She was gone from Adie's mind. It was an effort for Adie to focus outward and look at the mirror. The reflective surface was a sheet of blood! She couldn't disentangle her mind completely from the spell and realized that the mirror had gone beyond resistance and it--or something using it--was actively attempting to trap her. Easier said than done! Most of her mental barriers had been lowered to work the spell, but she slammed them back into place. Which was more difficult than it should have been, but she DID manage it. Her warrior Segallion staggered toward her, sword drawn. Adie saw that Nila had collapsed behind him. Had they been seized by the spell, when it lost its grip on her? * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 245): MISS STEP of LADIES IN WAITING (Crip, mgr.) Doggone right I'm gonna write one of them Duelmaster Columns! Bow wow! I am Bulldog proud to have made it to the top of Aruak City, Heart And Soul Of Andoria! That makes three Bulldogs in a row holding the title and at the same time getting elevated to the lady's graces. It is a pretty neat time to be a Bulldog! First Dog- Tired the TP; then the big lunger Beef Bullion, and now me, Bark, the dog with no bite. Arf arf! Some of you asked about Beef Bullion's faves which turned out to be mod/very high/SH/attack. I guess that worked for the big 3 CON - 3 DEF lunger, as he had quite the record. Me, I started as a 9-10-8-16-17-13-11 mode SL with normal damage and endurance. I never could use the scimitar well, and despite the lack of strength, seemed to like the longsword as I regularly critted with it. I ended (retirement) as a 11-11-8-17- 18-14-11 (still normal damage) and a 24-16-0 record. I will take it! Ruff! My faves were a wonderful very high/very low/BA/riposte. I have to thank all my friends and teammates for helping me get here today. I'd say Kennelworth coached well and got the most out of me. It has been an honor to be a Bulldog and to be amongst the "defenders" that preserved the values and honor of Aruak City. I wouldn't trade that opportunity for a TC! Good luck to all and remember.... Health. Humility. Honor. Bark, Duelmaster SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. THE BLUES now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. Coming up with a solid 2-3-0 outing, IMMORTALS has advanced 8 places in the rankings. It looks like the guys(?) at ANIMAL FARM had a good week as they went 3-1-0 to put them in 5th place. I guess steroids help! Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. INGRATE WHITE CREEP was bested by LOWELL DARNO and drops 25 points. Unlike most arenas, BARK managed to get his challenge off against the 21-17-0 NIXIE SEASPRITE. Our battling duelmaster BARK has managed to hold the title, fending off NIXIE SEASPRITE's none too subtle advances. Better luck next time, SCARLET KNIGHTS. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff? But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle! Did you hear that REBIRTH was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of REBIRTH's warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch ANIMAL FARM's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from REBIRTH. Well just about everybody wants a piece of DA HERETIC, who was this week's most challenged warrior. Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying BLOOD MONKEY will do. He challenged 19 points down to trash BRANFORD HAWKE. Definition of petty: BLOOD MONKEY subdued BRANFORD HAWKE, a mismatch of 19 points. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, DAMNUALL went after MOONLIGHT, who was higher by 22 points. Well, when the dust settled, DAMNUALL dispatched MOONLIGHT. GUMDROP of SNUGGLEBUNNIES had better have a good reason for challenging down 10 points in a challenge which he lost. I thought GUMDROP showed great skill and promise when he was beat by K. K. DOWNING. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Big deal, so STONEFACE got mashed in the Dark Arena. With his face he was more at home with the trolls than with us. (Waka waka). This week 4-10-0 CAPSTER was sent to the Dark Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might take notice of this. Proving again that ARUAK CITY is not rated G, DAMNUALL of the WHEN DOGMA FAILS II slew the warrior MOONLIGHT in a rather bloody bout. Let's look for a bloodfeud. Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. Well, there's the manager of the ARUAK CITY giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Aye -- The "I's" don't have it; the cats do. -- Purple Panther Ed. -- "Loins tender"? Perhaps I was a little forward? But in my perpetual state.... -- Tenderloin, Bulldogs It just sounded so...personal. -- Ed. Bark -- I am proud of you. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. Enjoy. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Dik Dik -- But you couldn't even beat Ingrate White Creep, so how could you truly contend for the title? Perhaps your eyes are bigger than your mouth? -- Dog-Tired, retired Duelmaster, Bulldogs Lonnie -- You tried, pal. (again) But I won the bullion. -- Beef Bullion, retired Duelmaster, Bulldogs Nixie -- I was proud of my new bite, and my quiet bark. A salute to you. -- Bark, Duelmaster, Bulldogs Doc Steal -- That was fun! I do so love a win against any and all Docs. -- Calfskin, Bulldogs 2XZ -- Wow! I remain... -- Green With Envy Damnuall -- Maybe next time you should show up more heavily armed? -- Rabid Shrew Kellumbo -- Damn that was vicious. Too bad for Ice, he made his challenge on the turn I finally found Forrest's weapon and rhythm. Nine outta fourteen attacks were crits!!! Sorry if it made you cringe and as many times as the audience, and you can bill me for the broken weapons later. -- Paradox23 Gladius -- Looks like your record is suffering for the same reason mine is. ;) -- Screwdriver Panther -- Damn you're fast! -- I Taj -- Don't you know you're supposed to give up after getting hit so many times... not fight back. And when I finally did, all I could do was chuckle. Where did all the Sloshers and Invaders go!? They didn't even last as long as I thought they would, and I never had much faith. I know none of you saw a difference between my team and the other invaders, but hopefully you are starting to see it now. I am still here, and I am not going away. Perhaps now that the pages upon pages of propaganda are out of the newsletter, some of you might care to learn more about your friendly Delarquan neighbor. I will try to read and respond to any sensible personal ad to that end. -- Doc Steele, mgr. of Neverwake Bark -- You have double my experience, 30 points in the rankings, you win a random match up, and all you can do is brag. Some things never change. Congratulations, you are the better warrior and your manager is a genius for devising such a devious strategy. -- Jugular Beef Bullion -- See above ad. Ditto. -- Double-Tap Kennelworth -- I must admit that I rarely care about basic wins and loses much on an individual scale, but going 0-2 against _you_ was quite painful. However, I happen to keep a score of my individual performance against every manager I fight in Aruak City, and your 2-0 brought our lifetime Aruak City score to Doc Steele 5, and Kennelworth 4. So try not to break your arm patting yourself on the back. -- Doc Steele Tatiana Seasprite -- And what do you do during a drought? -- Nila Sundancer 16 June 2004 Death Fest Begins July 29/DM 59 T-172 "You drive a hard bargain Hammer," responded Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul, "but the Gladiatorial Commission has agreed to re-open DM 58 Delarq Tor as a Slow Arena exclusively for a period of six months to those Death Fest contestants who fight their stables at least 67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death Fest; on the condition that at least 20 stables qualify for the Illis Iron Stable Award at the conclusion of the Death Fest and those qualifying managers send a New Stable to DM 58 Delarq Tor without Cannibalizing their participation in the other arenas where they have active stables!" Hammer felt a certain sense of satisfaction as he studied the ghoulish grin spreading across the face of Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul; proud Arena Master of the once dying Illis Arena, as the DM 59 Arena Authority signed the Gladiatorial Commission papers authenticating the arrangement agreed upon by the two parties presiding. "You and the Gladiatorial Commission also drive a hard bargain," Hammer replied as he reflected upon the prospects of Delarq Tor DM 58 being re-opened as a Slow Arena with at least 20 New Stables by the Managers who fight their stables at least 67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death Fest. "I also notice the clause that for Delarq Tor to be open Exclusively for 6 months to the New Stables managed by the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners that there must be at least 15 stables Active each cycle. That is a fair bargain for the opportunity to battle for the Duelmaster Throne each of those six months before Other New Stables are allowed to enter Delarq Tor." This was a Golden Opportunity for both Veteran and Newbie Managers to pave a new frontier of Delarq history by qualifying their Death Fest stables in DM 59 with 67 fights out of a possible 75; then for the price of running a stable in a Regular Arena, continuing to be Active in DM 59 and sending a New Team Roll Up to be a part of "History in the Making" when Delarq Tor would re-open for its First Turn as a Slow Arena on November 3rd, 2005. Death Fest would conclude on T-186 August 25th, 2005 allowing the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners enough time to be registered with the Gladiatorial Commission; whereupon they would be able to submit a New Team Roll Up to the GC to start a New Stable in Delarq Tor; be able to fight those New Gladiators in the Rookies 2005 Fall Mailer Tourney; then begin competing for the DM 58 Duelmasters Throne in Delarq Tor right out of the gate with the November 3rd 2005 T-1 Debut Opening Round. Hammer of the First Part had also negotiated with Lord Na-Zul of the Second Part an agreement that All 10 Dark Arena Monsters and 17 NPCs Characters be re-named by the Top Ten Death Fest Finishers. [See DM 59 T-171 Newsletter Team Spotlight by Hammer for the complete listing of Dark Arena Monsters/NPCs and the Official Death Fest Designation for which Top Ten Finishers re-name which characters!] Lord Na-Sul could not hide his delight at the prospects of Death being re- delivered to his once dying arena during the Delarq Death Fest; the DM 59 Arena Master agreed that these Death Fest Prizes were but a Small Exchange in Comparison to the Profits to be made by the local Illis business merchants and surrounding community from the Anticipated Influx into Illis by the Veteran and Newbie Managers/Gladiators/Stables seeking to make History in the Delarq Death Fest. Nor could Hammer conceal his jubilation regarding the Call Across Alistari being Answered to Cross Blades and Match Wits with the Devious, the Diabolical, the Dangerous and the Down Challenging who were being drawn to the Delarq Death Fest to Fulfill their Delarq Dueling Destiny!
