                              (The Days Of Yesteryear)

In this day and age of TC-or-else and tournaments, FTF, +20 skills, godlings,
sandbaggers, timing, stat switches, etc., etc., it is easy to deprioritize the arena
actions and miss one of the most significant enjoyments of the game. Arena life is
fun. Role playing is fun. Being a force in a city/arena is fun. Having a great W/L
record is fun. Collecting Duelmasters is fun.
Admittedly, arena enhancing actions may not be the same actions one might take
if tournament play is the primary or only satisfaction. Warriors that excel in basic
DM may not be those same types that excel in tournaments or the upper game. Spots
and personal ads are not a necessity of the upper game and tournaments. Death
matters in DM, but is insignificant to ADM. Loyalty to a cause may get lost in a
tournament. But certainly it is true that one can have great and inexpensive
enjoyment playing DM at the basic level.
The Consortium has long been known for optimizing those basic DM pleasures and
for graduating over 400 warriors to ADM. Both Kennelworth (The Bulldogs) and Mino
(Animal Farm, originally of DM20) are aged managers in the game and are now
Consortium representatives in Aruak City. At one time there were over 30 active
(Yes, active arenas) Consortium managers in basic. Perhaps some of these manager
names ring a bell? Pandora, Fandil The Wise, Lenpro, Curator, Mr. T, Ace, Senator
Bob Dole, Crazy Creepster, Oz, J D Rockefeller, Oremaster, Snuffy, Midas....
Kennelworth and Mino would like to feature some of their warriors who did well
(or better than might be expected) in past basic, but nowadays would not be in
anyone's tournament thoughts and most probably on the DA pile. Indeed, these types
of warriors were probably not on most managers' keeper list in the days of
yesteryear!
Note: the info is starting data and graduation data.

Some great fun and certainly some of the terrific records would have probably
have been missed if these sorta-lousy-yet-fine warriors had not been run. Perhaps
there is a message there for the newcomers to Duelmasters today.

Greetings Aruak,

It does not seem like another 100 turns (and about four years) have passed until
I reflect upon all that has occurred in that time, here in our Andorian Heartland.
Before I get into all of that, let us just appreciate Aruak City and its arena
culture as it is today. I still find it hard to believe, but it seems that we have
one of the most popular arenas in Andoria!
One-hundred turns ago we were dealing with the presence of The Boss in Aruak
City; now there is Doc Steele, but I see one important difference...Doc can write!
He has recently complained, either here or in Andorak, that we (Andorians, I guess)
only know of a single topic worth our consideration in the public forums: down-
challenging. While the issue can be divisive, I would like to encourage all of us to
move beyond it as fodder for conversation. I think we could all proceed in this way
by simply accepting that down-challenging does happen, and a manager that chooses to
do it shouldn't be surprised when it is done to them. End of topic.
The changes that were recently made to the tournament classification system are
very interesting to discuss. As I have discussed with some of my alliance-mates
recently, the reorganized Freshmen tourney provides an interesting opportunity for
those fighting styles that have always traditionally been overlooked on the Isle to
finally prove their worth. This fascinating possibility will not be realized until
the over-developed sandbaggers are classed correctly, but once that is taken care of,
I think the Freshmen tournament will become one of the most interesting levels of
play in arena combat.
Leeta posted an ad last turn, that started out being directed at Doc Steele but
seemed to go on to address the whole arena, in which she posed some interesting
ideas. Our old "Question of the Week" could be restarted, unfortunately without
Hanibal (he was present at the height of the "invasion" but he has since slipped away
again). Above I raised an issue that I hope will generate some dialogue, although
that not everyone is involved in ADM and/or tournaments. In the mechanics of warrior
strategy, I still think our collective understanding could be increased by discussion
and sharing of knowledge regarding tactics. After nearly 20 years, some tactics are
still misunderstood or poorly understood. Leeta also raised the topic of re-opening
one of the closed arenas. I'll reserve my own response to this notion for the
personal ads, but I do like that it is already being considered and I hope Leeta gets
many responses.
Of course, 100 turns ago there had yet to be any arena closures. It seems like
then there were so many more interesting people in our line of work. Looking back, I
think Aruak then was as vigorous as I have ever seen it--before or since. 15 teams
on the roster and all of them were active. The personal ads thrived too--most of the
arena made some contribution (and, as you can probably imagine, the Tuft Tuggers went
above and beyond the call...). Andorian Knights, Cannibalz, and Bonedaddys were all
chartered teams. Shadowgate was just getting his start here. Doc Mabuse hadn't made
his debut yet, but would arrive soon. These people helped to make Aruak a great
place to be for a while--let's not forget them!
Over the past four years Aruak City suffered two major invasions. While one
made all of us present at the time more thankful for our lives and the peace and
prosperity we normally enjoy, the other just perhaps made our warriors reach for a
heavier helm on the way to do battle. In the former, the former Tarrgirian general
Kyrican occupied Aruak by force while imprisoning some of us (including myself). The
occupation will remain a dark period in my own life as well as the history of this
city, but thankfully there was a light of salvation at the end of the tunnel. In a
fitting display of bravery, many of our very warriors (Protectors and otherwise)
confronted Kyrican in his fortress and slew him. All's well that ends well, but
let's not forget the brave souls that fell with the hope of Aruak's continued freedom
in their hearts. More of a footnote was the "invasion" of the Frothingsloshers,
troublemakers, etc. I know which event with remain more poignant in my mind 100
turns from now; at least the latter was good for the economy!
Before I wrap up this retrospective, I wanted to recognize the three very same
managers that I named as my role-models 100 turns ago. Two went away for a time,
then returned, while the third has been quietly plugging along this whole time.
Adie, Kennelworth, and Dartor, Aruak would not be what it is if not for the
contributions that each of you have made. Thanks for being here, after all this
time.

                         Health! Humility! Honor!
                         Generalissimo Puerco

The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend?

Aruak City:

The stinging sensation was sharp and virtually unbearable, but pain by steel
would be something she would have to get used to. Fiona winced as Jolith tended her
wounds. She had used some magic to stop the bleeding and bind the wounds, but actual
healing took time, for she was no priest.
"I have not held a sword since my youngest days, and now I am relegated to
this," she bemoaned, with a bit of venom. "But I will need to bear it. You are
certainly much more suited to martial combat than I, Jolith."
"I found I have some basic knowledge of swordsmanship. I used it. No doubt
however I will find my own endeavors as grievous as yours to come in this arena
environment." The man's loyalty and straightforwardness was something Fiona admired
and was coming to rely on.
"Even if I chose to destroy a gladiator through magic, it would be foolish,"
Fiona noted absently. "For one, we would draw attention to ourselves, especially
from 'her', and secondly, only blood magic works properly, and I will only touch it
so much lest it get out of control. But it's better spent on small useless tasks,
than powering the return of dead powers of the past."
"What of the resetting of the arcanum, can you sense its path yet?" Jolith
asked.
"I am gaining mastery once again, but it is not easy. When the Folstrom and
Greywand get into their inevitable tussle, I should be in control however. The high
magic set by the Eyes has faded, but the chaos beneath can be used. Master that, and
you can master anything. Fortunately, I have some knowledge and training from the
ages when my kind helped free the dragons from Folstrom control. When magic was
different, more chaotic."
"Have you considered using the Folstrom as unwitting allies?"
"I would be a fool to do any business with those devils. Yes they are powerful,
yes they are cunning, but they seek more than just power such as I. Vengeance is
what they seek, and it will only find them destroyed. Impaled on the end of a Lord
Protector's sword." Fiona took a breath and then explained, "Revenge should never be
a motivating factor. It can only be a secondary result, if any, of the completion of
real plans that move your ultimate goals forward. Do not think for a moment that the
Folstrom are not our enemies."
Fiona paused and shifted topics. "Dinin should be ready for the tournament
soon. The down time between should give plenty of time for us all to continue our
own tasks. For now I bet he would just like to get a good look at Greywand and her
entire arena ensemble. No doubt he'd like to 'graduate' and scout out the isle.
Kronos says he'll be participating as well, so we might see him afterwards. You and
I will have to wait and see if we improve sufficiently."
"What of the Tuft Tuggers and their managers? Could they discover us somehow?
I see that as our primary weakness." Jolith's mind was keen, hopefully he would be a
quick learner, with the blade and the spell.
Fiona smiled. "Tankesh is uninterested in such triviality as long as Marcus
runs, and he has his own business to attend too. My only worry would be the lady on
top. She however is bogged down dealing with the rising of dark powers from the
past, and with luck they will finish her. We need not worry about Adeolar."

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, in ARUAK CITY a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets
poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. I understand that The
Victory Tavern is buying the drinks for UNMERCIFUL FATE tonight, to honor their rise
to 10th after this turns 4-1-0. Hmmm. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for
there are sorrows to drown for SCARLET KNIGHTS II, whose 1-3-0 this turn dropped them
by 8 into 12th. The ELFQUEST guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched
in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see,
ELMER FUDD fought SEGALLION SUNDANCER and gained 23 points and contributed to LORDS
OF CHAOS' 3-2-0. SEGALLION SUNDANCER has lost to ELMER FUDD, falling 23 points,
while helping make TUFT TUGGERS a 3-2-1 turn. Well done, ARUAK CITY, the Duelmaster
was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps WALL OF GLASS is not as thrilled,
being challenged 5 times. ZLATINA ANGUELOVA challenged for the Duelmastership this
turn, attempting to dethrone SCARLET KNIGHTS II's warrior. And not without some
honor, ZLATINA ANGUELOVA now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of ARUAK CITY.
Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters
do dishes at The Victory Tavern until they win. Maybe?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. KELLUMBO'S KIDS has cause to stand
tall, as they were ARUAK CITY's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And avoiding KELLUMBO'S KIDS more than any other team we find TUFT
TUGGERS. ARUAK CITY, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing?
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? LORDS OF CHAOS has lost ROBIN U. BLIND to the arena in the sky, but
they don't seem to be worried. What do you expect from 6-6-0? It's a dark day for
BRAT PACK II, seeing how WARDUKE from SCARLET KNIGHTS II has not been revenged for
killing EMILIO ESTEUEZ. Is it really true that ARUAK CITY has more dishwashers per
capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, ARUAK CITY, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in ARUAK CITY, but never good to
wear out my welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my
pen sets to paper-- Alarond the Scribe

Wow, look at that! A team spotlight AND a DM column! Yay! -- Adie

Leeta -- Funny you mentioned the lack of writing right as some appeared. So, how
about some from the scribe!? -- Adie
P.S. Yes, let's have some more questions of the week, or even the old ones to see if
responses have changed. I know mine would have a bit on some topics.

Contests? In Aruak? I think the last contest we had in Aruak was the quickdraw
contest about...oh...at least eight years ago. We've never needed one, being the
unassuming arena that we are, but perhaps it is not a bad idea to hold a small one.
Perhaps another quick draw contest? -- Adie

D.K. -- Hmm...I must be the only one using avoids out there since only two of my
warriors avoided you last turn and I still got mentioned in the newsletter.
Whatever.... -- Tankesh, who doesn't give a...

Tatiana -- You're the teacher I've sought all my life.... -- Segallion

Dragula -- I have suddenly gotten the desire to toss this big ass axe I've been
using. It stopped working! Back to the old beating stick. However, that was one
ROCKIN' fight! If that's the way I have to lose, at least I made a run for the cup!
-- Zlatina

Van Helsing -- Didn't _I_ feel like a witch. -- Branford

Nila Sundancer -- I was just a BIT outclassed by experience! -- Eliza
P.S. Those were excellent skills, thank you.

Yellow Streak -- Now THAT was a colorific beat down! -- Kalidor

Purple People Wanna-be -- How's them apples! Yellow will be nothing but after his
black and blue bruises begin to heal. -- Tankesh

The Singing Bandit -- I have no need to kill...for now. -- Jolith

Big Dog -- I have yet to inform the commission, but I am a small elven woman. It is
unfortunate to bring my plans to fruition I must survive this dirty arena system.
So, Big Dog, who is the top dog? I might be interested in getting to know them...
better. -- Fiona

Warghast -- Your death would have brought a smile to my face. -- Dinin

Dik Dik -- Keep it up, Honey! You are beginning to impress me! Perhaps I should
have waited for you, but I am impatient and it was so, so long. -- Cherry Cheetah,
Retired Lord Protectress

Fuzzball, Fuzzball, Fuzzball! Wow! That was a close one! I feel so gooooooooooood!
-- Almond Albatross

K K Downing -- Somehow I got through that with a big win! You really know how to
stick it! -- Onyx Owl

Two Stepper -- A salute to you and a hiss to the outcome. -- Azure Asp

Avast ye Mates! Hop'n ye done 'joyd me spotlight! Aye. -- Mino

Doc Steele -- We are all so sorry that you could not find time this round for your
peasants. Maybe next? Did you like the flowers? Forget-me-nots are so lovely this
time of the year. Health! Humility! Honor! -- Kennelworth

Fiona Starmantle -- Bulldogs like any kind of tuft, even if they are maniacal! -- Big
Dog

Detective Kellumbo -- You won't accept my free drinks? Gee. And here I thought you
liked me? Is this some type of age discrimination? -- Kennelworth

Albino -- A little shift to the strategic plan; some fine execution; we're even. --
Calfskin

Blind Illusion -- Luck and a little mustard is all it takes to make my day. Thank
you. -- Hot Dog

Amy and Khans Of Calamity -- You can come back now. The four turn timing for the
blood feud of Puppy Love is all over. my dogs won't bite. -- Kennelworth

Wall Of Glass -- Congratulations again! Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn.
-- Kennelworth, Proprietor

Jo Mooncatcher -- I like your style and your personals. You are so cool. Keep on
buckin'. -- Bucking Brahma

Leeta -- I loved Hannibal's "Question Of The Week". Perhaps we should start that
back up? -- Kennelworth

This one's for Hannibal -- QUESTION OF THE WEEK -- Does responsiveness work best at
high or low activity levels, or does the level matter at all? -- Kennelworth

All -- 5-0, and most avoided team??? Awwww...you shouldn't have.... -- Detective
Kellumbo

Bonnie Raitt -- Surprise, surprise. It's called an "if challenged" strat honey!
You've just been Dik-Dikked. -- Dik-Dik

Lowell Darno -- Simply put, you were no match for Steel. -- Steel

Two Stepper -- Let me guess, you just couldn't resist the match up of snake vs. snake
could you? -- Two Stepper

Ice -- You should know that a Thunderstorm is simply not as tough as Ice. Really,
which would you rather face? -- Ice

All -- I just know that the warriors from Aruak City are gonna do *great* at the
upcoming tourney. You can all do it! -- Positive Polyana

Tankesh -- You've never met a woman as vicious as me? You, sweetheart, say the
nicest things. Just for that, no DC's this turn. -- DK
P.S. The Kellumbo is derived from the combination of Kelly and being a detective
(Columbo)....thus: Kellumbo FYI

Kennelworth -- While it is nice to know how you view this gladiator stuff, just be
sure not to shove it down anyone's throat who doesn't see things the way you do. For
anyone interested in a different view of this city, feel free to drop me a diplo. --
Detective Kellumbo

Tankesh -- Moron. -- Hugs, DK

Street Legal -- Yup pal, it's just beginning. Better buckle up. -- DK

Persiana, Skasmonauts -- That was a fine DM Column. You are a credit to this City.
Good luck on the Isle. -- Generalissimo Puerco

Kennelworth -- Perhaps you should hire Lady Fern to personally deliver Doc's forget-
me-nots. -- Generalissimo Puerco

Rockie Dee -- Okay, but I doubt I'll be by for any duets until I get my 'winning'
technique sharpened more. -- The Singing Bandit, still up to his old tricks (losing)

Leeta -- For the QoW I would ask what the novice managers in Noblish have questions
about, but I'm guessing there isn't much question-asking going on there. One reason
that kept going was that Hanibal was a new manager with not many other sources of
knowledge and feedback on the subject or gladiatorial combat. If there are any
genuinely new managers here, they have failed to make themselves known.
As for your question about re-opening a closed arena, I like the idea but I
think that doing it after the Winter tourney would be too soon. I think if we start
talking about it and planning for it now, then doing it sometime after the Summer
tourney would be better. That will give people with limited resources time to finish
some other projects and plan for the added burden of running consistently in the re-
opened arena. It will also give us time to plan the contest or whatever device it is
that will be used to lure managers there for a significant duration.
I've never participated in any of these high-profile arena contests, but it
seems to me that they just don't work that well for bringing together a large number
of active teams on a long-term basis. At times, when I have looked in on arenas
where I understood a long-running contest to be occurring, I've been surprised to see
how few teams hang around after the opening turns. Something different will need to
be done in this case, like making many participants feel like they still have a
chance to win (something) even toward the end of the contest. -- Generalissimo Puerco
P.S. My choices for arena would be either 53 or 66, but only the latter if we would
be able to move back teams that we had transferred out after the closure originally
occurred.

Lords of Chaos -- Welcome to Aruak. Please introduce yourselves. -- Generalissimo
Puerco

Kulgan and Krew -- What an unexpected surprise! Welcome back--you're just in time to
celebrate turn 500 with us! -- Generalissimo Puerco

Virginia's Secret -- Don't just stand there and smile! TELL me! -- Lini Dawnwind

Django Reinhardt -- Oh. (disappointed look) I thought your name was rein-STONE, and
I was all set to have a great talk about fashion and jewelry and stuff. But it
turned you should have been called stone-heart. Ouch! -- Jo Mooncatcher

Eliza Pigeron -- For somebody who claims relationship to a pig, you move well. If
you want to drop by our place, I'll give you some more lessons in dancing. -- Nila
Sundancer
P.S. None of the SACRED dances, of course.

Gladius Starstrike -- (puzzled look) If you're female, and I have to say you've got
the curves for it, shouldn't your name be Gladia? -- Rockie Dee

Bretndann -- Odd name you have. I don't think I've seen the n-t-d grouping before.
Hard to pronounce. -- Jon Fleet
P.S. I'm not really cavalry, you know. They say I'm too big for the horses Leeta
raises. I never guessed she was sizist.
P.P.S. I happen to be very cool and courageous, if you wanted to know.

Doc Steele -- I don't think I have a worst. At least, not on the sands. I can write
some nasty personals if I put my mind to it, but Ed. always pulls 'em. -- Leeta,
Krill Cavalry, who accepts that warriors die

Adie -- I see you have written a spotlight. Great! Except...now I have to sit down
with my magnifying glass and read it so as not to step on your storyline.... -- the
martyred Scribe

Tankesh -- Back at you, little one! I wish "Knocking a notch lower" on your too!
Big time! -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager
P.S. Back upwards to 7-3!

Kennelworth -- Bah, Humbug. We Colorifics go for "Veni, Vidi, Vici." -- Purple
People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Ice -- There is more will hidden in my back pocket. Tell your buddies to beware. --
Blue Blazes, Proud Colorific

Leeta, Doc Steele -- Kerplop Cyclone! Nice personal Doc. Bwa Ha Ha! -- Purple
People Eater, Laughing Proud Colorific

Warduke -- I didn't think I really had it in me. Thanks for those GREAT learns! --
Blue Blazes, Proud Colorific

Doodlebug -- Snuggle up to that, Big Boy! -- Blue Velvet, Proud Colorific

Kalidor -- Man you were too bold and too good for me. I'm avoiding. -- Yellow
Streak, Proud, But Humiliated, Colorific

Treestump -- I found the silver lining. Perhaps you'd better find the DA. -- Silver
Lining, Proud Colorific
