Aruak City:
Adie stood at the window and watched lightning walk across the sky. She had not
attempted to view the works of the reborn Kraelian wizard Khaldren since the disaster
with her magic mirror, but she knew the man was not idle. She could feel the
energies he was investing in Krael and his new base at Zorpunt like the heat of the
sun behind a thin curtain of clouds. It seemed better to wait for Shania to return.
Adie shivered as she remembered how closely she'd come to getting caught inside the
mirror, in a trap set by the group of wizards working in Krael to foil anyone who
would spy on them. If Segallion and Nila hadn't been here....
She threw off the dark mood with a determined effort and turned away from the
window, drawing the curtain closed.
Fandil of Ardivent gestured with his pipe at the map spread on the table.
"Khaldren hasn't expanded his territory any since your encounter," the old man
remarked. "He could be running into more trouble than he expected. Lord Protectors,
for one thing--the arena system is new since his day."
"He's had time to get used to gladiators," Cho of Khalhums argued. "And Lord
Protectors to practice on, too--not only does he control Zorpunt, but all the coast
from just above Tobir nearly to Amen-Tei. He's got Ti and Point--"
"Closed arenas, there."
"Plenty of Lord Protectors still around, though," Adie said. "A lot of them
never went to the Isle, or went and came back to their Graduation Lands." She took a
seat at the table and began to twist a lock of hair around her finger as she thought.
"There will have been some who welcomed Khaldren, I should think, and plenty who
didn't care either way...."
"Lord Protectors were ordinary people before they were granted agelessness,"
Master Cho agreed. "And ordinary people come all sorts."
Fandil muttered something under his breath; it sounded like, "Health, humility,
and honor."
Adie pretended she hadn't heard him and tapped her finger on the map. "Krael is
the old root of his power," she said, "but he's building a new base at Zorpunt. So
he'll have to be defeated in both places--"
"There's good evidence suggesting he's raising power outside Andoria, as well,"
Cho said. "Fratsfa, Celestinvael, Old Valamantis, Xochithlan, Monuntial, Zuwayza--
all the oldest cities in Alastari." He filled his mug with wine and leaned back. "I
wonder how long ago he started on this."
"Since the disturbance in the Strait of Iaye, maybe ten years or so ago," Fandil
said. "We think he came forward in time with some gladiators who were diving on the
ruins of Krael."
"That's been our assumption," Cho agreed. "But what if he started earlier--MUCH
earlier. Before the destruction of Krael. What if he left... time capsules, so to
speak, in the old cities, to wait until he called them in our Now?"
"What difference does it make? This is fruitless speculation, Cho. Whenever
Khaldren started, we have to deal with him now."
"No, I see where he's going with it," Adie said. "If this effort of Khaldren's
was planned long ago, at his leisure, and prepared for, we could be fighting more
than we realize. And since he seems to have no hesitation to use Blood Magic, he has
more magical power available than we do."
"What does the Lady of the Grey Wand say?" Fandil asked.
Adie shook her head. "She won't help. She won't even accept messages or
petitioners. We have to deal with Khaldren ourselves."
"And quickly."
On the Trier:
Shania Silverstar stood in the prow of the small ship and stared into the
darkness as though she could see portents in it, or pierce the veil of rain to see
the coast of Andoria that was--should be, anyway--coming closer.
"I've never seen a storm like this," Ashon Chang said beside her. "At least,
not since I came from.... Not here."
"It's magical," the elf said absently. "Not deliberately created, but a
reaction against magical stress in the area."
"Dangerous?" The orc, Vurand, came up on Shania's other side.
"Severe storms are always dangerous to small boats," Ashon Chang said.
"All the more reason to stay off them, then!"
Shania smiled slightly. Vurand's dislike of boats was well known. "Magically
dangerous, too. Any time you have this much power loose, it's dangerous." She
tilted her head to 'listen' to the currents of magic swirling through the area and
winced. "And this is uncontrolled. Or, perhaps, barely controlled, but if so, I
can't trace...." She made a sound of frustration. There were so many things she no
longer had the strength to do! The decay of the Arcanum couldn't take her knowledge
away, but knowledge without power was worse than not knowing.
Rhugal's hands settled on her shoulders, and she could feel the warmth of him
behind her. "If you need strength, take it."
She leaned back against him. "Thank you, but no. I feel like a vampire
already! And I don't think the situation is urgent enough at this moment to--"
Something rose out of the water ahead of them, dark and gleaming wetly when the
lightning flashed, to unfamiliar a shape to be grasped. But its position was easy to
understand: it was directly in their course. Tentacles twisted upward just as
darkness came down again.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hail and well met fine warriors and managers of Aruak City, heart of Andoria!
It is I, Dik-Dik, your reigning dulemaster. I can only hope that the offer for a
free drink at the Bulldog Inn is still good with the way Kellumbo and Kennelworth go
back and forth in the ads. What can I say? It has been a long road getting here.
From the start of an invasion gone bad, to a mid career slump, to a change in
strategy and my turn upon the throne. My time in Aruak City is one of fond memories
and glorious battles. I salute you all!
Speaking of battles, this turns challenges go out to a couple of TP's. It seems
only fitting that a basher spend his last fight against a TP. It is the *right* way
to do things if you ask me. I only regret not knowing my favorites before Kellumbo
had to submit my strategy for this turns fight. As for avoids, Headcutters and Tuft
Tuggers get the nod simply because they do not deserve a shot at the throne.
Hopefully I can get in one last fight with a TP before I head off to retirement.
Well Aurak City, looks like this is it for me. I would like to take time before
I go to recognize a few of the characters that make this arena so much fun. Adie and
Kennelworth: While Kellumbo does not agree with how you see things, I certainly
admire and respect the passion you have for this fine arena. Frothingslosher's: It
has been an honor fighting in the same arena with all of you. Doc Steele: It sure
is nice knowing Kellumbo has competition for resident bad guy and most avoided.
Papaiz: Such a pity you follow Kellumbo wherever she goes. Are you going to retire
from this arena as well? And lastly Leeta: You are the greatest. Simple as that.
And with that, I leave you all to fight and toil for the golden ring you all
seek....the title of Duelmaster. Fare well.
- Dik-Dik, proud graduate of Aruak City, heart and soul of Andoria!
SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Say good-bye
to TUFT TUGGERS, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the KRILL
CAVALRY stable. Take a look at ELFQUEST's act, as they have a 4-0-0 week and gain 14
places in the team ranking. It was a tough week for MANIACAL TUFTS, to drop 8 places
in the rankings. It looks like the guys(?) at SKASMONAUTS had a good week as they
went 3-1-0 to put them in 11th place. I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch
out for TREESTUMP, who flew up 21 points in the rankings after mashing MISMOSH like a
melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was
GLADIUS STARSTRYKE, who dropped 12 points after a disappointing (to say the least)
bout with ALMOND ALBATROSS. The most challenged warrior this week was DIK-DIK. If
this keeps up, our Duelmaster's going to need more avoids! Going for the gusto and
coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was GERFEL'S FRIENDS' THE GREAT SAMARITAN,
who was turned away from the Duelmastership by DIK-DIK. Advice to bashers--never
force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARUAK CITY arena. Did
you hear that NEVERWAKE was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal
hygiene of NEVERWAKE's warriors, I'm not surprised! And you guys like to boo me?
Well, unsling your rasberries, cause BULLDOGS beats feet every time NEVERWAKE smiles
at them. Try farming, eh? Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had
STEEL challenge up 41 points in the rankings to take on WALL OF GLASS? To the
crowd's chants of 'Bo-zo bo-zo bo-zo', WALL OF GLASS was taken out by the
lower-ranked STEEL. (Maybe it's time to think Dark Arena?). In a touching display
by a 'touched' warrior, BILLY GIBBONS went after PURPLE PANTHER, who was higher by 25
points. Well, when the dust settled, BILLY GIBBONS subdued PURPLE PANTHER.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! This week 20-18-1 SEGALLION
SUNDANCER was sent to the Dark Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records
who might take notice of this. Carrion Bird Cinematic Humor: KALIDOR THE BOLD II:
THE REMATCH. The audience likes blood and there was plenty of it covering THE GREAT
SAMARITAN as he was driven to an early grave by DIK-DIK of the KELLUMBO'S KIDS. Big
man! TEDDY RUXPIN kills KALIDOR THE BOLD. Who ya gonna fight next, TEDDY
RUXPIN--Minnie Mouse? I hope TUFT TUGGERS has a good enough fighter to beat the snot
out of TEDDY RUXPIN. Congrats to TEDDY RUXPIN for revenging the death of his
teammate (but more importantly, feeding KALIDOR THE BOLD a bit of dirt). Remember:
alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what
happens.
Well, there's the manager of the ARUAK CITY giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some
tracks. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos),
oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

PERSONAL ADS
Zlatina (with great assists from Tankesh & Adie) -- That was a GREAT DM column.
Interesting, ingenious, and just neat! -- Kennelworth
Dik Dik -- Congratulations on your DM crown. You have been advertising and
publicizing your greatness, and you have delivered on your claims. Well done, Champ.
And, of course, Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor
Maniacle Tufts -- I am back. (At least, I hope I lived through the tournament!)
Again, I apologize and I say let's do the deed! (No catsup, please.) -- Hot Dog
Contest? Didn't we just have an all-encompassing contest? Weren't the results...
Defenders 1 and Invaders 0? Coda 1 and noncoda 0? -- Kennelworth
All The Bulldog Family hopes that all Aruakers did well in the Mailer. Salute! --
Kennelworth
Adie & Kellumbo -- While it is true that there may have been more of those
"nonconventional warrior" successes in the old days, we can assure you that they run
similarly today. (from experience) The biggest difference, is that to most managers
they are even less desirable today, with the focus on godling level/highly bonused
warriors for tournaments. Were the DM arenas and roleplaying focus today the way it
was in the days of yesteryear, the resultants would remain similar. -- Mino and
Kennelworth (and the white horses they rode in on)
#!%#%! Sissy Boy!!! You are dead meat in your little bitty elf shoes, Tankesh! --
Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager
Albino Rainbow -- You put the white-out on my blue! I can only say--well done! --
Blue Velvet, Proud Colorific
Enbalmer -- Did that come as a surprise for you? -- Blue Blazes, Proud Colorific
Treestump -- What would you do without me? Your own personal silver lining? --
Silver Lining Proud, but humiliated, Colorific
All ye landlubbers, ye best send yon old scalliwaggin' rascal Spectrum (now Huckle
Cat) yer best "aye matey". He be a good'n. Aye. -- Mino
Wall Of Glass -- Perhaps I am improving? Only two minutes? Is there a message
there? Growlllll! Congratulations on your well-earned Lord Protectorship. -- Purple
Panther
Billie Gibbons and Bonnie Raitt -- Whether it be owl or kangaroo, you treated the
critters with utter disdain. Cruelty to animals is a sin! a sin, we say! Sinners!!!
-- Onyx Owl and Khaki Kangaroo
Huckle Cat -- Any friend of Mino's is a friend of mine. Welcome to Aruak City, the
Heart and Soul of Andoria. Health! Humility! Honor! -- Kennelworth, Bulldogs
Strongbow -- Not strong enough for Dik-Dik! -- Dik-Dik
Gladius Starstryke -- Well done, and on my challenge to boot. -- Ice
Kennelworth -- Honor is all a matter of perspective. -- Detective Kellumbo
Adie -- Please don't start with the whole health, humility, honor thing as well.
It's bad enough dog chow boy does it. -- DK
Kalidor -- Sometimes us total parries get confused. -- Ice
Tankesh -- You say the sweetest things (villainous slut...I kinda like that....). --
DK
All -- Now that the tourney is over, Kellumbo's Kids will be back up to full strength
for quite a while. Feel free to send those challenges and use those avoids. -- DK
Tankesh -- You little cadling! Now you've got me down to 6-3 and not on a roll.
Perhaps it is time to simply gobble you whole? -- Purple People Eater, Proud
Colorific Manager
Positive Polyana -- You can do it! Indeed, you almost did it! Great fight! You are
a deserving warrior. -- Blue Velvet, Proud Colorific
Bonnie Raitt -- Drats! Great challenge and win. I had all the chances in the world
and I couldn't close it. My bullpen is weak! -- Blue Blazes, Proud Colorifc
Warghast -- Twenty-five swipes and not one sinlge crit or big hit? I take it THAT is
not my favorite weapon and that you are way too good for me. Whew! -- Silver Lining,
Proud, but humiliated, Colorific
Dik-Dik -- Well, you managed to get to the top, just in time to graduate. I guess
that deserves some kudos, even for an invader. What can I say, you're the first to
hang at the top and make it out. I'm sure you won't take Adie or Kennelworth up on
it, but drinks are free at the Bulldog. -- Tankesh
High Elf wasn't so bad. What a wuss. -- Zlatina
Bargan Basement -- Now THAT was bold! Even though I got the win, I didn't get much
else out of that fight. A good tussle, well fought. Care for another round? Send
your buddy, Elmer Fudd. I promise not to complain about a DC. I like a challenge. -
- Kalidor the Bold
Skamakaze -- That took some balls! My defensive abilities may not be the best, and
my riposte may be poor, but still! Nice challenge, I'm no rookie. -- Segallion
P.S. Hey, that was a DC? Did you do that on purpose? Please say it ain't so.
Punch Gran Cru -- You really are a Gran Pa! -- Branford
Honey -- Sorry, you just weren't sweet enough sugar. -- Eliza
Kennelworth -- Okay, this turn, I had of my four warriors, post two total avoids to
two different teams. We'll see if I'm top avoider again, and see which one gets
picked. Maybe we can figure out how these insane commission people make their luny
conclusions. -- Tankesh
D.K. -- If you want to feel better, feel free to talk dirty to me all you want, you
skank you! -- Tankesh
P.S. Sorry to boot you from the top team spot... Wait, what am I saying! Woo-hoo!
P.P.S. You know, I never had to figure out the hole avoids thing until I had to
avoid DC'ers in Aruak. I love avoids, especially when I get mentioned as the
avoider, because it just tells the avoided how dishonorable they really are.
Purple People Eater -- I hate typing out your long name. You're such a schmuck! --
Tankesh
P.S. Not that people don't say the same of me! ;)
Scribe -- A spot? Really? Sure you were... just kidding. I'm looking forward to
it! ;) -- Adie
This time, it's in. Well, at least something is in.
Generalissimo Puerco -- Loss? Dinin? Who's that? <thoroughly confused and unaware
of the Maniacal Tufts>. -- Adie
Congratulations to our new Lord Protectors. Dik-Dik, Dragula, The Great Samaritan,
and Segallion Sundancer. Bring honor to Aruak. -- Adie
Huckle Cat -- Welcome to Aruak City, Heart and Soul of Andoria. We hope you enjoy
the culture here and make it your home. The Aruaki abhore trying to kill in the
arena, and we do not downchallenge. We also vigorously defend that culture. You
will find many talkative and friendly people here in Aruak, and we hope you'll be
part of our community. -- Adie, Manager of the Bulldog Inn (owner of Tuft Tuggers)
Cao Black -- Experience was on your side. -- Jolith
Jon Fleet -- This is infuriating, loosing such a close fight. All my sacrifice for
so little. You... are a dog. -- Fiona
Hot Dog -- You're barking up the wrong tree my furry friend. WE don't care if one of
our number are killed. Besides, I wouldn't have been surprised if Dinin allowed
himself to be killed just to get to the isle for the dead tournament and see
Greywand's 'facilities' from the inside. Whether or not he makes it back is another
matter. <evil grin> -- Fiona, for Maniacal Tufts
Segallion Sundancer: 11(2)-12-9-21-16(1)-5-13, nor/good. MA/ini/att, AE/par/def,
EX/rip. Poor parry base, slow to learn defense, riposte, decise made him a challenge
similar to Zlatina. But he came around with his learns eventually unlike she. His
good weapon and high offense paid off in the end. Maybe next time I'll run such a
warrior in heavier armor instead of trying finesse so much (I did it once, and it
worked against the obstinate Dik-Dik). Most of his losses were to faster warriors
with high offense (ie. lots of LU's). -- Tankesh
Potato Head Jr -- What happened to Sr? Did he get mashed? -- Rockie Dee
P.S. I just couldn't resist that one. Sorry.
P.P.S. Sorta sorry.
Fiona Starmantle -- Madam (slight bow), you must find it difficult to be classed as a
"Maniacal Tuft," I am sure. The necessity for uttering maniacal laughs at frequent
intervals, for instance, obviously impeded your concentration on the combat. Sad, is
it not? My own situation is somewhat similar, though the problems for me do not
arise in the arena but out of it, when I am forced, despite my height, to practice
cavalry maneuvers on small horses, little more than ponies. I practically drag my
feet! Ah, well, effective immortality is probably worth it. -- Jon Fleet
Django Reinhardt -- Humphf, and Jon thinks HE has a problem with the ponies.... Oh,
well. Good fight, I guess. Yeah, I guess... I'd rather have my head cut than
banged. Slightly. -- Jo Mooncatcher
P.S. I'm actually quite good on a horse that's big enough to carry me. But will
Leeta listen? Of course not!
Rainsong -- Somehow, your name seems inappropriate. -- Nila Sundancer
Timmorn Yellow Eyes -- That was quick! What were you thinking about instead of the
fight? -- Lini Dawnwind
Azure Asp -- Of course I wasn't fleet PERSONALLY. The horse is supposed to do that.
-- Jon Fleet
Eliza Pigeon-not-pig -- Okay. -- Nila Sundancer
Dragula, 11-13-7-17-15-5-17, master riposte, master in Attack, adv. expert in parry,
exp in defense. Adept with shortsword (no thanks). My first graduate since Prime
Mover I believe. Fighting regular arena on his last turn, looking for some last
blood. Wish him luck. -- Dartor
Tatiana -- I finally won a defensive vs. defensive battle. Thanks for the expert and
rise to Challenger Champs. Hopefully I can follow Dragula shortly. -- Lowell Darno
Cheers to 500 turns and hoping it continues for another 500. -- Dartor, mgr.

Youngblood's Three and Out Contest
I would like to take this time to announce and invite all managers to compete in what
I think will be an awesome contest. If you haven't ever TC'd at a tourney before,
here is your chance. The contest will start Wednesday, December 1, 2004, but a
chance will be given November 17 to dark arena, only, any warrior that you do not see
fit to run in the contest. So now that I have your attention, here are the rules
(like you didn't know they were coming sooner or later).
1. Any manager participating can enter one team, only.
2. No sandbagging whatsoever. (I will keep up with it, every turn.)
3. No teams or warriors will be allowed to run after contest starts.
4. All warriors will run until they lose three times, after three losses they are
eliminated.
5. If a warrior sits out a turn, they are accounted with a loss in the contest.
This is to keep warriors with winning records from sitting out until the end of
the contest.
6. If a warrior is killed during the contest, the replacement cannot enter the
contest.
7. If a warrior is killed, bloodfeuding is allowed, but only by a warrior that is
active in the contest.
8. If a warrior is run after being eliminated, the manager is disqualified from the
contest, no questions asked.
9. Challenges are legal, up or down.
10. Contest will keep going until 1 warrior is left without three losses, and that
warrior, of course, is accounted the winner.
11. All managers participating will be asked to purchase a rollup certificate, to be
awarded to the winners of the contest.
<<<PRIZES>>>
As I have already said, and according to participation, rollups will be awarded
to the first and second place managers. So the majority and minority of the rollups
will be determined when all are accumulated.
Contest Champion--2 Faves prizes, and majority of rollup certificates
Contest Runner-up--1 Faves prize, and minority of rollup certificates
So once again I invite all managers old and new to participate in what should be
a fierce and challenging contest. <<<REMEMBER, FIRST OFFICIAL TURN OF THE
CONTEST IS
DECEMBER THE FIRST, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, THE TURN BEFORE (NOVEMBER 17TH) YOU MAY
DARK ARENA CHALLENGE ONLY!!! ANY WARRIOR WITH ANY FE (FIGHT EXPERIENCE) WHEN THE
CONTEST STARTS WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE CONTEST.
