On the Trier, and in Aruak City:
The net of lightning was going to trap their ship, not the monster. Shania
struggled with the forces. It wasn't supposed to do that, but it seemed to be
drifting away from the target she had intended for it. She could feel resistance in
the weaving forces, opposition. Herlas, up to some-- And Rughal, too? What was
oing on? Rughal would never aid Herlas, they had barely stopped him killing the
mage.
Rughal's voice came faintly through the roaring of the power. "Think, Shania!
Too much Chaos--we could subdue one monster, maybe two, but there might be a
hundred."
Her mind steadied. Later, when she had time, she would curse the collapse of
the ordered Arcanum that had weakened her, and the Chaos that half-blinded her.
Rughal was right, and Herlas, too. They couldn't fight this. She bent the net
around them, enclosing the ship in the web of power. All they could do was endure
until the storm ended.
If they had enough power.
Adie's head came up, her gaze turning westward. There was nothing to see beyond
the window, only the violence of the storm. But there were other ways to see than
with the eyes of the body, other ways to hear than with ears. And she had heard
someone call for help. Shania, she thought, but the mental voice had been different.
There had been masculine overtones.
"It could be a trap," Cho said behind her.
"And it could be desperate need," Fandil countered.
"It's Shania," Adie said flatly. "She needs our help."
The two old men looked at each other. Cho shrugged. "I have done many reckless
things in my life. What is one more?"
Fandil grinned, clamped his teeth firmly on his pipe, then reached out one hand
to Cho, the other to Adie. Cho completed the circuit by taking Adie's other hand.
Power swirled upward. Adie seized it and used it as a springboard, leaping outward
toward Shania.
There was resistance. It was like trying to run through quicksand, or a bog.
Opposition. Something else was present in the matrix. Something hostile. No, not
hostile, at least, not actively so. Other knots of power, minds of power trying to
free themselves from this morass. They would take her power if they could, not as
enemies but simply to use against the chaotic web that had trapped them. As Shania
must be trapped, and as she herself, Adie knew, could be trapped if she wasn't alert
and careful. And lucky.
No time to think about that now. Evaluation would wait till the job was done.
She could "see" Shania ahead of her, reaching out. In the mental image, a man stood
on either side of the elf seeress, supporting her and helping her; one was light, the
other dark. Both were very strong. Where had Shania found them? Ask later. For
now....
Power joined to power.
Darkness turned inside out.
Hands weaving together.
Effort. Resistance. Success.
Ashon Chang and Vurand, as being least involved in the effort, were the first to
recover. Shania Silverstar, Rughal, and Herlas were in a heap on the floor; Adie,
Fandil, and Cho were collapsed around a table. Chang and the orc staggered from one
to another making sure all were alive. They were. There wasn't much else the two of
them could do, except wait.
Vurand, investigating the decanters on the table, found wine and splashed it
into two cups, handing one to Ashon Chang. "That was close. We were damned lucky."
The samurai smiled grimly. "We have good friends," he said.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greetings, Aruak,
I'm coming to you from the free drink area of the Bulldog Inn! I must say I am
trying my best to make the owners regret this policy by drinking them into oblivion
(or myself, whichever comes first). Y'know I came here not only for the free drinks
but I was also looking for some "Tush"! Well, I strolled over from "La Grange" to
join the "Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers" and shortly after arriving at the Bulldog I
noticed a little cutie who really had some "Legs" but what really knocked me out were
her "Cheap Sunglasses"! Needless to say I felt a touch of the "Blue Jean Blues" but
after all "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" so I strolled on over to her anyway. Well, she
said of course every girl's crazy 'bout a "Sharp Dressed Man". I wasn't sure what
she meant so I did the ole' "Doubleback" then said to her "I Thank You" and asked if
she wanted to do the "Tube Snake Boogie"?! She said hmmm...then said you've sure
"Got Me Under Pressure" and said all she really wanted was a "Pearl Necklace". Well
folks, I don't have to tell you in Aruak that I'm a "Rough Boy" so I said sure but "I
Wanna Drive you Home" because "I got the Six" and I told her to "Gimme' all your
Lovin'"! She replied you "Dirty Dog" you and smiled! So we hopped in my ride and
headed back to the guildhouse and jumped into my "Sleeping Bag" and I undid her
"Velcro Fly" and all that night we had fun until my teammates came to me and asked me
to keep it down. Well you know I "Can't Stop Rockin'" at that point so I told them
to help themselves to my "TV Dinners" as long as they were going to be awake all
night. Well morning came and "I Woke up with Wood" and rolled over to grab that lil'
honey but "She's a Heartbreaker" and she had already up and left. Well there was but
one thing left to do.... So I shouted "Viva Las Vegas" and hopped in my ride back
here but I was "Arrested for Driving Blind" but I told the officer "Jesus left
Chicago" and "My Head's in Mississippi" and I need dearly to get back to the Bulldog,
the "Planet of Women" y'know for a Duelmaster, and represent our fine city so he
nodded and let me go, fine gentleman he was! And here I stand 2 beers in hand
drinking to our fine city, ah I love her well but it's just one win and off to the
Isle where I can say to Ms. Greywand "I'm a Fool for your Stockings" fair lady!
Adios,
Billy Gibbons, The Headcutters II
SPY REPORT
Good day, in ARUAK CITY a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets
poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. Now, what did these guys
have for breakfast this morning? VIEW ASKEW has turned a 3-2-1 into 15th place from
26th. Give me the recipe! Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are
sorrows to drown for ELFQUEST, whose 1-3-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 18th.
The THE HEADCUTTERS II guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the
future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, K. K.
DOWNING fought EBONY EMU and gained 23 points and contributed to THE HEADCUTTERS II's
4-1-0. EBONY EMU has lost to K. K. DOWNING, falling 24 points, while helping make
ANIMAL FARM a 2-3-0 turn. SKAMAKAZE challenged for the Duelmastership this turn,
attempting to dethrone THE HEADCUTTERS II's warrior. Defending his title for another
turn, BILLY GIBBONS kept SKASMONAUTS' warrior, SKAMAKAZE, from claiming the throne.
Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters
do dishes at The Bulldog Inn until they win. Maybe?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. KELLUMBO'S KIDS has cause to stand
tall, as they were ARUAK CITY's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And guess who avoided KELLUMBO'S KIDS stable the most? Believe it or
not, it was ANIMAL FARM. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn
was KRILL CAVALRY's warrior ROCKIE DEE. More fighters challenged her than challenged
the Duelmaster! ALBINO RAINBOW from WAR-C-KERS took a risk this turn by bravely
challenging up 27 points in a challenge against ONYX OWL. Well, ALBINO RAINBOW was
defeated by ONYX OWL, but ALBINO RAINBOW gained 6 in recognition for his efforts.
Thank goodness for small favors. DOODLEBUG of SNUGGLEBUNNIES had better have a good
reason for challenging down 14 points in a challenge which he won. I thought
DOODLEBUG showed great skill and promise when he defeated TREESTUMP. All right, so I
slept through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or
hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
I like this place, ARUAK CITY, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARUAK CITY and
I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in ARUAK CITY
again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Street Legal -- Congrats on the throne. No matter how much we have fun bickering,
getting the throne, especially in this arena, is quite good. -- DK
Papaiz -- Looks like I am about to pass your team in this arena as well. Hopefully
you won't leave here also. -- DK
Teddy Ruxpin -- Devastated...hey, it was in the newsletter. One more? -- Branford
Jazmine Ice -- That was one way, but I am versatile. Maybe I'll try something else
another day.... -- Eliza
Convicted Thief -- Do they ever let you out for anything other than fighting in the
arena? Is death the only escape? -- Jeb
The Mad Armenian -- Not a bad start for my...third beginning I think. -- Kalidor
Ice -- I'm back. :) -- Kalidor
Billy Gibbons, our Duelmaster! Drinks at the Bulldog. -- Adie
Kennelworth -- We'll see. When my team is complete again, you might have to fight
for the 'avoider' title. -- Tankesh
Azure Asp -- I like your color though! -- Eliza
Hot Dog -- I'm afraid you're right about what you said. -- Willie Dixon, the
struggling
Yellow Streak -- I thought my intimidating size would scare you, that was my plan.
Indeed yours was more carefully set forth, kudos! -- Django
Onyx Owl -- I WILL get you once before we leave this place you swine, errr, oh, you
know what I mean...Judas Priest! -- K.K. Downing
Enbalmer -- Apology accepted, I was given one minute (for our team) to try and
dispatch you in retribution, be assured our remaining attempts will stick to the
normal Aruaki ways of non-vitals! Bonnie was an experiment that only lasted due to
good bonuses: +4 PAR,+1 to 3 INI, +1 to 4 DEF, 13-11-9-15-9-12-15 PS, seemed she
liked the LO and maybe responsiveness. -- Street Legal
Skabba the Hutt -- Don't expect the next time we meet to go the same way! -- Willie
Dixon
Jo Mooncatcher -- Sorry I keep coming back to you but I needed to try and learn some
skills against a more experienced warrior! -- Django
Positive Polyana -- That was positively a Polyana performance by me. Not taking
anything away from you but I could've and should've done much better than getting
absolutely smoked...Judas Priest! -- K.K. Downing
Thieving Soul -- I'll thief your soul you sonova b........ -- Rick Derringer
Onyx Owl -- I am glad that I will be leaving Aruak City arena, as trying to deal with
the bleak black-and-white of one such as you is difficult for me. I am dedicated to
the Sun, to day and light and color. I will leave the night, darkness, and the
absence of color to such as you. -- Nila Sundancer
Hot Dog -- A chili cheese dog, in fact. Very tasty. Thanks; it's been a long time
since lunch. -- Lini Dawnwind
Ed. -- I can say things like that, can't I? It isn't like this is Aradi, after all.
-- Lini
And thank goodness for that! One Aradi is enough (not that it's all that much
right now...). -- Ed.
Dracula -- They tell me you were the original shishkabob man. Meat on a stick and
stuff like that. Can you do marinated beef with onions and tomatoes and peppers?
That's my favorite. No eggplant. -- Rockie Dee
Django Reinhardt -- Quite like old times, isn't it? I'm going to get a helmet with a
more interesting perimeter, since you insist on cutting my hair right at the edge of
it. -- Jo Mooncatcher
Foxxy Love -- I was prepared to find you a sweet kid. Until you hit me in the belly.
That was not the act of a sweet kid. -- Jon Fleet
P.S. But you remain a foxy lady, even though you aren't sweet. Busy tonight? If
not, you can come by the Infirmary and soothe my fevered brow.
P.P.S. Blows to the belly always make my brow fevered.
P.P.P.S. No, I err. It wasn't the blow that made me fevered, it was the Infirmary
staff. They'd fever an ice cube.

Battle Royal 4
The Battle Royal arena contests are one of the purest tests of manager skill
available. The rules are simple. The scoring is simple. The updates are live. If
you would like to participate, simply get a team ready in Talcama in the next month
and announce in the personals that you're in. The prize is bragging rights and
having your name along side previous winners (Doc Steele, Manray Frothingslosh, and
Manager). It is a brutal contest, but it is a lot of fun!
Basic rules: No avoiding other contest teams. Score = Wins + Kills - Losses.
Only fights against other BR teams count. First team to 25 wins!
BR4 begins in Talcama (DM 18) on turn 502, due on Jan 29, 2005.
Visit http://www.geocities.com/assurnasir/br4 for more information.
