EVIL DOES NOT DIE, IT EVOLVES

Aruak City:

"Such stupidity!" hissed the dark elf as she watched from a corner table in the
Bulldog Inn. Not that anyone would notice her as such with the cloak and a simple
magical illusion. "This idiotic name our 'team' has in the rankings keeps drawing
the attention of Adie's friends, who are dumb enough to associate us with 'them'.
But she and Tankesh will eventually connect the dots and try to look into why their
former Tarrgir team has been active."
"We will need to change the team name," Jolith noted from beside her.
"Perhaps." Fiona turned a silver coin over in her hand and shifted in her seat.
"So what news from the tournaments?" The dark wizardess had opted out of them,
knowing her own physical weakness, but also because she had other business.
"Dinin perished a few months back, and Kronos continues his training. He may be
making a night appearance soon," Jolith filled in dryly.
Fiona scoffed. "Hah, I knew that fool was biting off more than he could chew to
begin with. Not only does he allow himself to be slain before the tourney, he fails
to win his own resurrection! Now he's locked in Ahringol's realm, perhaps forever.
It is good to see you survived."
Jolith nodded. "It was difficult for Kronos and I to keep out of Tankesh's
sight at the winter tournament. Under-performing assured that however. What now?"
"Adie should be busy with all the chaos brewing on Ghea. We keep working
towards immortality for the time being. When Sheila eventually goes completely mad,
only the power of the Greywand itself may survive her self-destruction. We at least
should try to tie ourselves to it, and hopefully, all oaths of loyalty will die with
her...."

Aruak City:

Adie was the first to wake up. She braced her arms on the table and blinked at
the dust motes dancing in a beam of winter sunlight. Ashon Chang put a glass of wine
in her hand, and she drank it down, then looked at Fandil and Cho. They had burned
as much energy as she had, and they were old men. And they were not moving.
"They're still alive," Ashon said. "Everybody's still alive. I'm a little
surprised."
Adie followed his gaze to where three people--Shania and two men--lay on the
floor. A third man, with the burly figure of an orc, was bending over them. Over
Shania, mostly. Adie started to get up, because Shania was sometimes uneasy around
orcs, and she didn't need that stress right now--
Ashon caught her as her legs buckled. "Lady Shania's all right."
     "But the orc--"
"Oh, Vurand. He's a good fellow, once you get to know him. A little rough
around the edges, maybe, but he won't hurt Shania."
Adie allowed the gladiator to guide her back into her chair. Her companions,
she was glad to see, were stirring and blinking at each other. Her gaze fell on the
beam of light again, and she tensed, tracking it back to the window. "That window is
in the north wall of this room," she said. "There could NOT be light coming in
through it at that angle. Not if we're still in Aruak City, still in--"
"Ah, but you are not still...wherever you were a short time ago." The voice was
apologetic but firm, and quite unfamiliar. Everyone awake in the room looked in that
direction, and someone--Adie thought it was Master Cho--groaned. The man was of
medium height, and he appeared to be of middle age or thereabouts. It was hard to
see many details, as he wore a loose gray robe that hung in straight folds to the
floor, and wide-brimmed hat. But in the shadows where his face would be there was
the hint of a short gray beard. "I have taken a certain brief liberty with your
location, in order that I might have time to give you an important message."
Master Cho groaned again, theatrically. "The Balance has been tilted," he said,
"and we're the ones best-placed to set it right again."
Teeth flashed in a smile below the hat. "I thought you looked familiar. Cho
of..." the man coughed, "of another place. Very good. It simplifies matters."
"I don't want to simplify matters," Cho grumbled. He poured himself a glass of
wine and drained it at a gulp. "But if I must...leave these people out of it. They
don't need to--"
"Ah, but they do, Cho. This Imbalance affects their world, too. And the effort
to set things back in Balance is too much even for you, unaided. You will need
them."
     Cho scowled.
Before he could say anything else, Adie cut in. "What is this about?"
The man in the hat bowed slightly. "I am a Sojourner, and it is my duty to
watch the Balance, and to give warning when it is disturbed. As it is being
disturbed now by the wizard who calls himself Khaldren."
     Adie tensed. "Khaldren."
"Yes. He disturbs the Balance of your world, also. Normally, that would not be
my concern. This world from which you come is the creation of the Grey Wand, and it
is her business to oversee its Balance. But since Khaldren is, in origin, ours...we
feel a certain responsibility. And besides," the smile flashed again, "we would
rather see him fought and defeated here than wait until he has drained your world of
power and returned to assault ours."
"'Drained our world of power'?" Adie quoted. "Explain that."
Cho was frowning. "He's making use of the arenas to power his blood magic," the
old wizard said, "but that isn't enough to--"
"It is the shapeshifters you have here, these Aruaki. There is magic in their
blood beyond that of normally evolved people. Khaldren will use the blood-and-death
magic to...prime his pump, shall we say. And then he will drain all the magical
energy out of the shapeshifters. That will largely destroy the race, but he is not
one to be concerned over such a matter."
"What do you expect us to do?" Fandil said. He was filling a pipe with
automatic movements, his attention all fixed on the stranger.
The robe twitched as though the man had shrugged. "Stop Khaldren, as you must
do for your own world's sake." The calm voice seemed a little annoyed. "I am an
observer. The matter has advanced to the point where it requires the attention of
men of action. That is you. All of you. Learn what Khaldren is doing, and stop
him."
"Hard to do if we're stuck in limbo," Cho said.
"That is only temporary, so that I would have time to deliver my warning. This
room will rotate into its proper place in a few more minutes." There was a pause,
and then another twitch of the robe. "You may need to deal with some of Khaldren's
actions from the other end, therefore this room can be rotated--use Megarlane's Key,
Cho--into the world which Khaldren wishes to change. It will appear as a room in an
inn called the Gilded Ring, in Aldanira."
Without warning or fanfare or any sort of sign before, during, or after the
event, the Sojourner was not there. He might never have been there, for all the
traces he left behind him. And two minutes after that, again without sign or
sensation, the sunlight moved from the north and fell obediently through the western
window in the colors of sunset.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Ah, the bittersweet seat that is the throne on a tourney team. Hail and well
met, fine warriors and managers of Aruak City. I always knew I could do it, if I
just stayed positive. My trains have been great, and I am looking knacky as all get
out. Unfortunately, I am at the cut off for the Champions tourney, and as such will
be unable to defend my throne from the sinister likes of Street Legal, Rude Buddha,
Adie, Kennelworth, the Sloshers and the rest of that motley crew. And worse yet,
after Steel fights this turn, Kellumbo's Kids will all be timed for the upcoming mail
in tourney, so we will all be riding the bench waiting for it. Fear not though, when
the tourney is over, we'll be back in full force! Until then, your Duelmaster
signing off....

See you in the run-offs in April.

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in ARUAK CITY! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... I couldn't believe it.
Did GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS really go up by 11? If only those guys didn't have so may
missing teeth... Gross! What was the name of that team who got 4-0-0 this turn for
a total 769-603-26 you ask? (Sure) BULLDOGS' their name, and fighting's their game!
MVP award for DRACULA? UNIVERSAL HORROR's proud of him after beating LINI DAWNWIND
and getting 24 points. Talk about yer major upsets! LINI DAWNWIND's match with
DRACULA cost her a loss of 20 points! What a putz! POSITIVE POLYANA fights so hard
to be Duelmaster, then quits fighting and loses the title. No one said she was a
genius... Was that a tear I saw in PURPLE PANTHER's eye, as she took over
Duelmastership? And wasn't BRANFORD HAWKE fit to be tied! Is the Duelmaster really
being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of KELLUMBO'S KIDS must be getting
lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't?
Hhmph! What kind of warriors are COLORIFIC? KELLUMBO'S KIDS, an easy team to beat
if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Can ANIMAL FARM's ONYX
OWL be more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the
same?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. How cruel! NEVERWAKE heartlessly sent his
to DOUBLE - TAP certain fate in the Dark Arena. Is a 12-7-1 bad or something?
Everyone has problems, but why did NEVERWAKE send DOUBLE - TAP to the Dark Arena? He
had a 12-7-1, and I thought he looked neat on the sands... What if they had a fight
and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. ARUAK CITY is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much!
Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Strongbow -- What a battle! You are a jock! -- Blue Velvet, Proud Colorific

Positive Polyana -- I hate to give it up, but I have to admit that you earned it. I
had my chances. -- Blue Blazes (somewhat, or rather quite, embarrassed after her DM
Column outburst)

Double Tap -- It was such a great pleasure turning Steele into tin. -- Green With
Envy, Proud Colorific

Well, now, Doc, welcome back. Are you teasing us, or are you really here for good so
we can all enjoy the easy wins? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Tuft Tuggers -- Current top team? Perhaps you are something in the way of
competition after all? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Hisssssssssssssssssssssssss! Eliza Pigeron, well you were too much for me, you
snake! Mino says to tell your manager 7-10-4 Resp, whatever that means. -- Azure Asp

Albino Rainbow -- That was very, very close, but I am the one who gets to howl in
glee. Growllllllllll. -- Purple Panther

Steel -- Now we were quite the offensive pair, weren't we? I believe that 24 swings
is my personal best. It was worth the effort for the victory. -- Onyx Owl

Honey! Honey! Honey! It was a bird day! -- Almond Albatross

Positive Polyana -- Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. Congratulations! --
Kennelworth, Proprietor

Lady Adie -- Thank you for refreshing us on the spirit of The Coda in The Heart &
Soul of Andoria. Health! Humility! Honor! -- Kennelworth

Virginia -- Perhaps I will never learn your secret. -- Calfskin

Yodelayeeoooooooh! The Big Dog strikes again, Singing Bandit. -- Big Dog

Gladius Starstryke -- I feel so lucking having been able to compete with one of your

Kiana -- You are such a babe. I provided the dog, and you added a very fine bun! --
Hot Dog

Frank Zappa -- That's moo to you! -- Moo Moo

Positive Polyana -- Well done! Drinks at the Bulldog for the Duelmistress! I love

Azure Asp -- Bet you were not expecting me on the bloodfeud, were you?! -- Eliza

Jazmine -- What the #&$%!! You try to kill me on a downchallenge. We're going to
kick you to the curb and make you look like a little b!#@&!! -- Branford

Looks like another invader to beat the snot out of to me! Party time! -- Tankesh

Mobius -- What? Again! At least this time my experience paid off. 0-2 against we
Tuft Tuggers last turn is just the start for that DC to Branford. -- Kalidor

Convicted Thief -- Angry is right! Angry that you fell into thievery! Curses upon
you! -- Vilnius

E. Scribe -- A gud arse whuppin' fer yer kerupt hide! Yeowe! -- Jeb

Emu -- Since when were your feelings ALL that mattered? -- Syrlania

Hot Dog, Big Dog -- I'm detecting a pattern in the sequence of our challenges....
Let's keep it up; I'll keep beating one of you, and I'll EVENTUALLY beat the other.

The older I get, the more style advantage I'll have on both of you. So, here's to
hoping that I can get old! -- The Singing Bandit
P.S. Yeah, of course I know I probably just terminally jinxed myself....

Adie -- I can't believe you went and did it! Why did we argue all those times
against AK47, when he wanted to make a laundry list of "rules" for Aruak City, only
for you to go and make one yourself? Maybe I'm over-reacting, but to me it just
smacks of the very things that those "invaders" mis-perceived about our culture here.
If I were you, I would have left it at "treat others as you would have them treat
you" and wrap things up with the three 'H's. -- Generalissimo Puerco

Titanium -- I hate it when that happens. -- Jon Fleet

Gallow's Pole -- I don't like it when people try to hang me in the arena. It's bad
enough when they try to stab, slash, hack, smash, etc, but hanging? Not appropriate.
-- Lini Dawnwind

Django Reinhardt -- I never get tangled up with people who grin maniacally over their
weapons. It makes me, like, totally nervous. -- Rockie Dee

Bootstrap Ribeye -- Gerfel has many odd friends. -- Jo Mooncatcher
P.S. Some of whom get unlucky matchups.

Rick Derringer -- You call that a haircut? (checks in mirror) I call it more of
having my ears trimmed. Ouch. -- Windchaser

Bucking Brahma -- I've seen a depressed Brangus, does that count? After all, they're
half Brahma. -- Lini

On Jhans turn number 476 (due on Feb. 16, 2005) the Second Annual kLk St. Valentine's

DOOMcorps crush all challengers? Will the kLk prevail? Or will you be the
independent manager to show that alliances aren't all that? Come on to Jhans and
let's find out!
Prizes are: 1st. Renaming of a Dark Arena monster and five roll-up

My fellow duelists I come before you bearing a sad and unfortunate message.
Several months ago our group, the Vendetta Cartel, had lost contact with one of our
friends. Since he was in contact or correspondence on an almost daily basis there
was concern amongst us. With some research two of our members discovered why contact
was lost with him.
On November 10, 2004, Richard Hammes was taken from us in a senseless act of
violence during a robbery attempt at a friend's store where he sometimes worked. He
was watching the store so his friend could go home to tend to his son who had taken
ill.  You may have known Rich as Abarsis, The Slaughter Priest ; richh10 on the RT;
or gameogre on the Duel2 messageboard. You may not have known that he spent 13 years
serving the United States in the Navy.
Rich dearly loved this game and all it encompassed. He may not have been the
best or most experienced manager but he loved to interact with others and was quick
to offer advice whenever anyone asked for help. He was always kind and gracious and
tried to strengthen our game, often by helping new players feel welcome or give them
a chance to compete. With his prolific posting I know that I am simply speaking the
obvious about what he did for our game. Many, like me, were drawn to him, perhaps
for his kind nature or his sense of humor, and it appears he lived his life as he
played this game. Always willing to help or do right by others.
I realize that he had many friends outside the VC so I will include the link to
the news story in case any of his other friends would like to know more of what
happened. We're all dealt a hand in life but it's not the strength of the hand
you're dealt but rather how you play it that really matters. Rich played his hand to
the very best of his human ability and for this I admire him greatly. I know we all
choose to like or dislike managers but I believe deep down we are all good and
decent, in this game, and will drop party (alliance) lines and will show the proper
respect.

Rich was taken from us all to soon and with so much left to offer the community
around him. He spoke of a desire to run a contest on the Duel2 site which I hope to
uphold in his name. Some of the people I have spoken with think it would be a nice
gesture to do one final good act in Rich's name, though it could never match what he
would've done within his community, for his community of San Diego. I hope that with
this contest we might raise a little money to donate to an appropriate charity within
San Diego in his name.
In conclusion I send a message to Rich:
"Rich, though I'm sure you gathered this I never really told you how much I
admired you and what a friend I considered you. I thank you for being my voice of
reason and always reminding me of why we both loved this game so much! You have
taught me one final valuable lesson in learning more of you. There are things far
more valuable in life than material possessions such as character and kindness. That
nothing going on in your life means that you cannot find a way to be kind and giving
to others. We always spoke of meeting someday and until we finally do know that you
will live on in with me and the rest of your brothers and sisters in the Cartel:
Master Darque, Kat, Bum, Sensei Jan, Maximillian, Hammer, Fizban, Firehawk, Phat
Phat. You increased all of our enjoyment of this game, you were a true ambassador of
Duelmasters, and the game will not be quite the same without you. A farewell battle
cry from the ZalCon: 'Confusion to our enemies'. May your soul rest in peace, my
friend."
Should anyone wish to correspond about Rich feel free to contact myself, or
anyone else within the Vendetta Cartel.

Be it known throughout Alastari that Hammer is no longer a member of the
Vendetta Cartel alliance.
A difference of opinion with another highly respected member of the VC due to my
recent vocal actions in DM 47 can only be resolved by my resignation from the VC as
of January 29, 2005.
I leave of my own accord, in good standing with all members and with no hard
feelings towards anyone in the Vendetta Cartel.
There was a time when I felt that my membership in the VC made the alliance
stronger. I know that my resignation today makes the Vendetta Cartel a stronger
alliance with my absence. -- Hammer
