Aruak City:

Adie was concentrating on the twisting powers, not trying to do anything to
them, not yet, but just observing. Fandil and Cho were her anchors. Wise Old Fandil
was known, familiar, a tested and trusted partner. And as confused as she was about
the changes in the Arcanum. Fandil would do what he could, or what she asked of him,
anything that seemed like to help, but...what would help and what would turn against
them? Master Cho was largely unknown to her, though Fandil vouched for him. In
truth, she didn't question Cho's loyalty, but she didn't know what the Adantri could
do. When she looked at him with the eye of her magic, he seemed much bigger,
younger, stronger, harder. He seemed dangerous, and that was not at all the
impression that came from his physical appearance.
Adie realized that she was putting off the moment when she would leap into the
maelstrom with nothing but her old friend and her new one to anchor her and guard her
back, and she grimaced. A little intelligent apprehension was one thing--it kept you
from doing stupidly reckless things--but funk was another matter entirely.
She took a deep breath and jumped mentally. It was like jumping into a fast-
flowing river. Currents tugged at her, and the alienness of the pattern was as
numbing to her mind as cold would have been to her body. The faintly-glowing current
was swirling like water going down a drain, pouring into a blackness ahead.
Cho's voice sounded in her ear. "It's the collector--it's already in
operation!"
Fandil's voice in her other ear. "But nobody has died yet!"
"Tapping the emotion of the crowd--the bloodlust." Cho's grip tightened, and he
began to draw Adie back.
"We have to stop it!" she said.
"Yes, but not from within the Arcanum. All power used here will simply be drawn
into the collector."
Adie settled back into her body. "It must be stopped."
"To do so will be dangerous--I say this not to prevent us from acting," Fandil
said, "but in warning." He looked around the chamber at the packed banks of seats.
"People laugh at me, sometimes, because I believe in health, humility, and honor.
But I am not a fool. These people have been, as Cho says, steeped in bloodlust for
months now. If we disturb the pattern, the least we can expect is panic or a riot."
Adie looked around too, appalled at the prospect. She turned to Shania for her
assessment. If only they could get some clean sunlight into this place--
Shania was gone! Gone with her--or after her--were Rughal and Vurand, Herlas
and Ashon Chang.
A roar from the crowd as the first pair of duelists came out on the sand cut
across her amazement.
"There is nothing you can do, Lady Adeolar." The voice was cool and amused...
and right behind her.
Adie felt the edge of a knife against her neck, a hand twisted in her hair. "I
do not accept that." What were Fandil and Cho doing? Were they immobilized,
injured, dead? Did this fool think she would really just give up?
Cho's voice, speaking words she didn't know, but they had the cadence of a
spell. The hungry roar of the crowd faded to a background murmur. In the area
enclosed by the spell, the Arcanum returned to normal. Fandil's voice rang like iron
in a spell of his own. The person behind her reeled back. Adie whirled, gathering
her own power--less than she had hoped for, but clean, familiar, and responsive to
her hand.
There was only one person inside this protected area with them, tall, thin,
clothed all in black--she thought immediately of the outlawed Assassins' Guild. A
mask hid his face, but even in stumbling, his movements were so graceful that she
knew he must be an elf. He dropped the knife, and it dissolved before it could reach
the floor. A spell-knife, then.
Cho swept his hand through the air where the knife had vanished, and it
condensed in his grip. "Perhaps we should give you the fate you intended for Lady
Adeolar?"
The black-clad man lurched back until he was pressed against the invisible wall
of Cho's spell. "No! It wasn't to injure her, just to take her to the Master. He
wants to meet her, nothing more."
"You expect us to believe that?" Fandil snorted. "What is that blade, Cho?
What does it do?"
     "It's a soul-jar," the Adantri said.
Adie brushed aside the chill of that thought and glared at their captive.
"Where are Shania and the others?"
     "I don't know--"
Adie leaned closer, and under the heat of her anger, his boots began to
smoulder. "Don't lie. It wastes time."
"I don't know!" he screamed. "I don't! There are so many watchers, so many
traps! I am just a servant, I do what I'm told. I don't know!"

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, ARUAK CITY? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, BULLDOGS, since THE
HEADCUTTERS II took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. UNIVERSAL
HORROR turned their 1-0-0 turn into a 17th place rank in the listings this turn. Any
better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 3-0-0 is nice,
but don't get cocky, COLORIFIC, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud.
Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see JEREMIAH JAY COOKE win a fight and
gain 21 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, HONEY beat ELIZA PIGERON and ELIZA PIGERON lost
11 points. You're breakin' my heart. BIG DOG challenged ARUAK CITY's Duelmaster for
a shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as BIG DOG takes
the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and
bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their
fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. ARUAK
CITY, I am losing what little hope I had in you. BULLDOGS the most avoided team?
What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like TUFT TUGGERS avoided them
the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, LINI DAWNWIND was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to WILLIE DIXON of
THE HEADCUTTERS II for challenging up by 25 to HOT DOG. WILLIE DIXON won to get 88
points of recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. DO IT AGAIN has cause to pause today, as
WRAITH was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods,
I'll wager. It's about time DIRK DARKBLADE got beat for picking on warriors like
TURQUOISE TIGER. Bravo, ANIMAL FARM. See you at The Victory Tavern. Titanium
shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of
weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ARUAK CITY. I feel much better now. Glad to see the back
of this place-- Snide Clemens

PPE -- The spotlight solves the riddle of the one eye, one arm, flying, purpleness.
What about the one-horn? -- Adie

Mino -- I love your warrior names. I like animals, and I love the colors! -- Adie

Warduke earns a trip to the isle, well done. Congratulations, Scarlet Knight. --
Adie

Jon Fleet -- Yer downriot para-noid! The Arenamaster was merely givin'
acknowledgement of me whuppin' yer hide! -- Jeb

Puerco -- Yeee haaaww! Look at me go! -- Jeb

QoW -- I started out looking to be a PL-specialist, but things did not go as planned.
Still, I have had some decent success with the style. My memorable ones have all
been relatively balanced. I've tried repeatedly to make an offensive PL work in
basic, but I've had little success. I think one of the most important factors for
having a successful PL in basic is being able to parry decently. My first PL would
have had a 5 base in parry if he'd been mode, but instead he was +3 (and had it as
his favorite learn) so I got an over-inflated sense of what a PL was capable of.
Later, I had a really nicely set-up PL that was mode in parry with a 10 base, and she
could reliably fight for three minutes against a striker without getting hit. So,
whether it is by good stats or by lucky bonuses, having a decent parry base is key to
succeeding in basic with a PL. As for strategy, re-emphasize the parry by using the
appropriate tactic. I tend not to run them hotter than mod/mod. -- Generalissimo
Puerco
P.S. These were both warriors I ran to graduation here in Aruak City.

Warduke -- Congratulations, Lord Protector. We think all of Aruak City will be glad

Yo, ho, ho! Yon good'n plunger? Damme fine plank walker! Ho, ho, ho! -- Mino

Actually, when we thought seriously about this, The Consortium definition of a good
PL was: "A smaller lunger who doesn't demand to be a lunger. A warrior who knows
how to finesse and has the balance of a variety of defenses at beck and call." -- Ye
Consortium Scribe

Superbeast -- Wow!!!!! Thank you. Thank you! A big win and SIX skills! Six? Moi?
I feel like I am in bird heaven. -- Almond Albatross

Diamondback -- You outquicked me! Mino'd probably like you on our team. "Red
Rattler"? How's that sound? -- Pink Puma

Wraith -- Not a good match up for you, my friend. You need to be offering more and
praying more to the MUGS. And, beware the Turquoise. -- Turquoise Tiger

Bootstrap Ribeye -- Do you do stir-fry? I really LIKE stir-fry. -- Jo Mooncatcher,
feeling hungry

Lord Kronos -- With a name like yours, I expected the fight to last longer. But I
don't mind. I've got things to do, you know. -- Rockie Dee

Aqua Arachnid -- Nothing like a strong wind to blow away the cobwebs, is there? --
Windchaser

Tankesh -- Six hundred sixty pounds of orange blossom honey, taken from where the
orange blossoms bloom to where they don't. Hauling honey across the Continental
Divide isn't thrilling, but it beats a deadhead trip. -- the Scribe
P.S. As to bees having a bad few years, I wouldn't know. I avoid bees.
P.P.S. Were you supposed to be in this storyline? All this packing and cleaning is
stirring up so much dust that my brain doesn't seem to be getting enough oxygen. Or
else I need to sleep longer. One or the other.

Black Plague -- I have it in an off-shore account, of course. -- Embezzling Scribe

4 May 2005
Several questions have been asked about Slaughter's Challenge that I'd like to
address and clarify.
     1) All Prizes must be used on the contest team, this includes the resurrection.
Remember any fast arena team should be able to transfer to a slow arena
(except for arena 82, I believe).
     2) Warriors will be allowed to fight and run in the dead tourney, should there
be one, and return if an opening can be made without breaking the rules
(i.e. only one DA fight allowed per team).
     3) If you win your single DA match you do not get another. It's one use of the
Dark Arena win or lose so if you want him/her/it dead be sure and throw the
         match!
     4) The resurrection potion's longevity has been extended by the commission to 6
months but the other potions (favorites, and +1 bonus) must still be used
within 2 turns and on a 5 FE or higher warrior. The resurrection can go on
         any warrior regardless of FE.
Street Legal

P.S. My thanks to those already entered (Hammer, The Consortium, Tripwire, Stik, and

Shaman) and hope many more find a reason to come to arena 54. Again, my email is
triumph1971@hotmail.com or you can diplo me in arena 14 at THE DEATH SQUAD (63) if
you need more info!

Amendment for "Fratsfas Quest for the Best!"
Managers that have teams already established in Fratsfa need not have (3) three
warriors in the initiates. FE will NOT be a factor. Stables may be entered at any
time. Just announce your stable in the p-ads.

This in my invitation to all managers who wish to prove their mettle against
managers from all over Alastari. We have limited TP's in this contest to one a team
at a time. We DO NOT want this contest to become a scum fest as many others have,
hence the Andorian arena. Good luck to all who come to prove their skills. "May
your enemies' blood flow freely" -- Dark Knight Toker, Desolate Empire Alliance
