DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Yep, it's me. Another surprise. Another great match, and another of those
great Aruak City wastes overcome. Sometimes I surprise even myself.
Who will I be challenging? Nobody? Will I avoid? Not this time. You see, I
am abdicating the throne. This is very unusual for one of Kennelworth's clan, for
you see, The Consortium collects DM thrones and has amassed 400+. But, I am one of
the few exceptions. Being "maxed" for the FTF Champs, I have been tapped to give it
a shot. So I will not be fighting the turn you read this.
May the best warrior rise to the throne. There are many here just as worthy as
I am. Good luck to all.
Big Dog
SPY REPORT
Hail ARUAK CITY! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown
for DO IT AGAIN, whose 1-2-0 this turn dropped them by 6 into 15th. WAR-C-KERS
stable has parlayed this turn's 3-0-0 into a 8 space move up the rankings. This
brings them up to 7th place. Good work, guys! The SCARLET KNIGHTS guild has had a
3-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind
of thing can lead. And let's see, THE SINGING BANDIT fought IRON MAGRU and gained 21
points and contributed to GERFEL'S FRIENDS' 2-3-0. ELMER FUDD has lost to
THUNDERBLADE, falling 23 points, while helping make LORDS OF CHAOS a 3-2-0 turn. Due
to his absence and inability to defend the throne, BIG DOG has lost the title of
Duelmaster. And not without some honor, VAN HELSING now claims the title and throne
of Duelmaster of ARUAK CITY. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from
unimpeachable sources that The Bulldog Inn uses trolls in their stew. Talk about
gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the WAR-C-KERS stable was the most avoided
team this turn. Come on ARUAK CITY, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided
WAR-C-KERS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was ANIMAL FARM. Anyone
surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was SCARLET KNIGHTS II's warrior
VAN HELSING. More fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! In a
brave attempt, CALFSKIN from BULLDOGS challenged up 20 points to fight VAN HELSING
from the SCARLET KNIGHTS II stable. CALFSKIN perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing
as she was defeated by VAN HELSING and ended up with 96 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. A brave warrior does not carry a
red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your
swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

PERSONAL ADS
These all somehow didn't make it through HAL last turn... <grumble>
Street Legal -- So you and your alliance mates seem to favor the 'power' plunger with
higher speed. I have personally never seen one in action, unless unknowingly on the
receiving end. -- Adie
Q.O.W. -- Regarding influence of size vs. strength for attaining damage ratings, size
is definitely a much greater influence. The larger warriors much more often get the
apparently 'lucky' damage ratings. Your observations are right on. As to the exact
ratio of one stat to the other to determine damage rating base lines, I can only
guess. But if you had the raw data from that makes up terrabloods damage chart, and
averaged/smoothed out the variance, you might get a decent ratio prediction (although
there is the trap that probably a lot of the data entered are more often than not the
exceptions). Perhaps you could just use the chart itself to get an idea by taking
the chart's centerlines. Otherwise, your guess is as good as any, but I think you're
in the ball-park (2-1, or 5-2, str-sz) -- Adie
Dartor -- Woof! ... Did I just say woof? <scratching her head> Well, my point is that
Mismosh was quite a stretch for any warrior. One point of will into size and you'd
have had a palindrome! Do you try exceptionally hard to avoid the dark arena? I do
to some extent, but my tolerance threshold is pretty thin. Back to design... -- Adie
Q.O.W. -- General design principles you can apply to many/most styles. What are
they? Well, I've got a few ideas that seem logical to me, let me throw them out so
newer players or vets can consider them when transforming RUs into gods or worse.
1) Wit and/or Will, most important. The more the better. Wit is skill learning,
Will is training and helps physicals.
2) Look for extremes. Super high in some stats, super low in others. Preferably
super high for wit/will, see 1. But ST is great high, CN high or low, DF high or
low, SP lower, SZ any. Just general guides, but you can go other extremes.
3) Balance stats against each other's weakness. If one type of stat is high, a
certain other can usually be lower. In general you can group them into spongy CN+
SP-, or fast CN- SP+. You can offset SP with high WT/WL for decise, which is
preferable. Just look for a weakness and try to offset it by emphasizing what it's
got for its advantage. Frail warriors are good if they are fast and can hit hard, or
have lots of attack. If their physicals are too low, look for a low burn style. If
WL/DF/ST are moderate, probably not a defensive (not enough parry) unless you want a
fast one. If DF is low, better have lots of WT/WL/ST for attack, or pick a high
attack style. If DF is high, you can have less of almost anything else, but it
doesn't get you decise, so it'll need to be spongy or fast (and don't skimp on WT/WL,
see rule 1). Extremes are good, but remember to offset weaknesses from any low stat
with a high stat that makes the low stat seem useless anyways (the low stat is there
just so the points can emphasize what you really want). I hope that helps for you
designers out there. -- Adie
Kennelworth -- I'd like to learn that spell Fandil used! "His voice rang like
iron..." and left the attacker reeling. Very nice, very Fandil like. I am thankful
for his help. -- Adie
G. Puerco -- I find it interesting how nobody seems to remember that Andorian dark
arenas are non-fatal, but that such gladiators merely walk away retired. -- Adie
Remember that death in the Dark Arena is now a Manager's Option. You CAN have
your warrior killed, if you really want to. And, of course, it might just
happen. By what men call accident.
Kennelworth -- Oh definitely, I love his alliteration too. Did he have a cheetah at
some point? Cherry Cheetah? One of my favorite animals. -- Adie
G. Puerco -- Yes, very much so, as long as I can keep it up. -- Jeb
Yellow Streak -- Hey, "I" said 'you got punked', not Adie. Get it straight. Do you
seriously think she would ever say anything so crass! -- Tankesh
Big Dog -- I'm not too thrilled you whupped my guy to hold onto the throne, but I'll
give you kudos. Now go get hammered at the Bulldog... Duelmaster. -- Tankesh
Big Dog -- Perhaps I was a bit too 'bold' in that challenge, or you a bit too much
like a great dane, towering over me. But that is the first fight in which I have
learned nothing. I'm sure I could've learned what I should do to parry such attacks
or something similar. Perhaps your style is so crude and crazy I was left confused.
-- Kalidor
Lini -- Well $#!t, I was at least hoping to swing first and get a shot in before
getting pummeled. -- Branford
Willie Dixon -- Tankesh said I had to put your ego down. -- Eliza
Jo Mooncatcher -- Well, yep, I knew I'da probably get whupped, but I was lookin fer a
gud fight and somethin' to learn. Thank'ya. -- Jeb
Lini -- Thank you my lady. -- Kalidor
Dirk Darkblade -- Only my second win, do you think I'm getting better? -- Fiona
Bootstrap -- <hissing... are those fangs? Looking very pissed with narrowed eyes...>
-- Lord Kronos
Ye Consortium Scribe -- Thank you for adding more substance for the newbies on PLs.
Although I still had to go through and decipher a bit of what you had to say. ;) --
Adie
PPE -- It was a typo. Street Legal's SZ was really supposed to be 52. You dork...
-- Tankesh
PPE -- You just keep talkin' yourself up because I seem to somehow do it despite
always talking you down. So in essence, I'm done talking to you. Beyond your
baseless, pointless, mindless bantering, you're so... annoying! Stop it! -- Tankesh
Black Plague -- You moron, look at the dead list. Orange Otter was one of Mino's,
not one of Colorific's idiots! She and they have nothing to do with the likes of
you. -- Tankesh
Lini -- Well, if you'd let ME swing first, it might have been the other way around.
You can come down from your high horse now. -- Branford
Jo -- Nuts? I'm not nuts, I've just got balls and guts. Don't you? I look for good
skills and a good fight, for none of mine will come easy. -- Jeb
Scribe -- Okay. :P~ -- Tankesh
Rainsong -- Was that a new song you're singing after I was finished? -- Kalidor
Thunderblade -- It doesn't get much easier than that for me. -- Eliza
Honey -- I like fighting you... -- Branford
Bucking Brahma -- I shoulda turned up the juice there at the end. Note to self... --
Jeb
Golden Aura -- Not so golden anymore, ha! -- Fiona
Django -- Well that weapon was substandard. -- Lord Kronos, bored
Big Dog -- Congratulations on your continued success! You mentioned the formidable
wastes of Aruak City, and you have put them to shame so far. But there is still
me... -- Montezuma Whifflebat, waiting for his chance
Wow, top team... I'm honored! -- Generalissimo Puerco
Van Helsing -- Surely you mistook me for an undead, as you attacked with such
ferocity and vehemence. Luckily, I am still not an undead. You were too much for
this bird. -- Almond Albatross
Oski Noble -- Well, thank you, sir. Thank you. -- Turquoise Tiger (burp)
Door Knob --You smashed my spider web, you jerk! -- Aqua Arachnid
Convicted Thief -- Perhaps it is best to avoid me--especially when I am hungry. --
Pink Puma
Fiona Starmantle --Well, ouch! And I thought double ouch when I saw that maniacal
grin. -- Golden Aura, Proud Colorific
I have no problem running from the Userous Merchant and his collections. I will take
a victory any way I can get it. -- Yellow Streak, Proud Colorific
Louie C -- You proved me wrong and I admit it and I will shut up. -- Black Plague,
Proud colorific
What a sight to see! -- One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater, Proud
Colorific Manager
Lini Dawnwind -- I really thought you were going to turn it there. Great battle.
Salute. -- Big Dog
Willie -- When will you ever learn? This is not baseball, even though a hot dog and
a bat is present. But, hey, thanks for the thought. -- Hot Dog
Iron Magru -- Now don't that just make your hammer droop? Leather can be quite
tough, and sometimes iron is brittle. Quite the surprise, I suspect! -- Calfskin
Jeb -- It is always good to know you are there when I really need a tuft. -- Bucking
Brahma
Big Dog -- Now one drink only! See you at The Bulldog Inn, champ. -- Kennelworth,
Proprietor
The Singing Bandit -- Well, that was a bust! I kept trying to sing along, and you
kept changing the tune on me. -- Rockie Dee
Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- You short people are so pushy! -- Jo Mooncatcher
Stu Hamm -- Go ahead. Laugh. See if I care. -- Jon Fleet
Big Dog -- You really throw your weight around, don't you, boy? -- Lini Dawnwind
Rick Derringer -- Good advice. -- Windchaser
