"It isn't much, doll, but it'll have to do." "It's fine," Crystal Fireblade said. "Shelter, and a chance to rest, what more can we ask?" She lowered her pack to the floor, which was of rough planks, and stretched. "Any idea where we are?" "Somewhere between Zensu and Murska is the best I can do." He moved to the fireplace, noting the full woodbox with approval, and began to lay a fire. "I wish I knew what we've got following us, though." "Demons." "Yeah, but did you get the impression back in Fratsfa that Khaldren's converts used demons? They were regular hired bravos that we fought." "True, but we killed them. Maybe the next step is demons." The Lady Knight looked at the bread and cheese in her hands, then passed it to Raoul to toast. "What else could it mean? You think there's some OTHER power-mad magician at work, too?" "There are rumors about the kaliv of Kurukar." "I've heard them, but surely his arm isn't this long? And anyway, Andoria has its protections--" Raoul shrugged, looking around uneasily. "The protections, such as they are, focus on the person of the king, and who's seen him lately?" "He spends a lot of time on the Isle of the Eye...." "Which doesn't do Andoria much good. Sometimes I wonder if people are right about him being under the Greywand's thumb." Crystal Fireblade stood, squaring her shoulders, and looked down at her companion sternly. "That's fool talk, and practically treasonous." "And they say Fratsfa has its own protections," Raoul went on as though she hadn't spoken. "But those only work against...." He shrugged. "If the majority of the magicians of Fratsfa choose to ignore a danger, then the protections do, too. And if Khaldren has suborned them--" "That would still leave the protections in place against Kurukar," Crystal said, sitting down again. Raoul shrugged again. "Well, if we can catch one of the demons alive, we can ask who sent him." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Out of the Past #7 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + "There isn't anything YOU can do with it, either!" the elf said. He twisted against the restraints of the spell that held him. "That may be so, or it may not," Cho said. "It is not your concern. All you may and must do is tell us where the collector is." "I can't!" The elf was panting now, and sweat ran down his face. "It's forbidden--don't try to force--" He stiffened and screamed as his clothing burst into flames. "Adie!" Fandil gasped. "I'm not doing it!" She grappled with the flames, trying to damp them down. They were magical, of course, but of an unfamiliar pattern that devoured more than the elf's body; his soul was in peril as well. There seemed to be no way to stop the destruction, and her face set in grim lines. This man had sinned, who knew how freely and knowingly, but he did not--nobody deserved to be consumed utterly. She reached over and drew Cho's sword (one never saw an Adantri, regardless of gender, age, or profession, without a sword), then turned and drove it through the elf's heart in one clean lunge. Shania struggled once and realized that she didn't have the strength at this time to break free of the trap, although she had more energy now than at any time in recent months. That was odd. But there would be a later time, and in preparation for that, she needed as much information as she could gather. In the first shock of entrapment, she had attempted to pull back her sensors, but now she relaxed and extended them again. The energy flows were like rushing water, sweeping her toward a cataract. She could not get out of the river, but she could control the angle at which she met the fall. Perhaps, and the metaphor amused her, she could seize a "floating log" to help her remain above water. She looked around. Four "logs" kept pace with her. She touched the nearest one with her thoughts. It was Rughal. Of course it would be Rughal! Nothing was more likely that he would be close at hand to hold her up. Although she would never have imagined him as a log-- The log changed shape on the thought, becoming a dog, no, a wolf, swimming strongly beside her. The other logs were changing, too. A boar, that must be Vurand. And a...some kind of big cat, a panther, perhaps. Herlas, without a doubt. Ashon Chang was a horse, and she put a hand on his mane, and dragged herself half onto his back. What was her form? Her hand was unchanged, well, younger, perhaps, but the hand of an elf. And her arm was over a man's shoulders, not those of a horse. "Do not imagine us other than we are," Herlas said, coming up beside her. They were now standing on a beach of silver sand, the rushing river scarcely a memory. "This place is too responsive." The dark Fratsfan looked around, eyes gleaming in the sourceless light. "There's power here, if I can find the way to grasp it...." "It is not a power you can use," Shania said. The lines were clear, a pleasure to observe after the confused state of the Arcanum in Ghea. "We have passed into a gate, but not out of it. The only proper use of this power is to make an appropriate exit." "So you SAY," Herlas muttered. "Let's find that exit and get out," Vurand said. He glared around, his whole posture indicating suspicion. "I don't like it here." "Nor I," Ashon Chang agreed. "There is a feeling of...unreality. Or only partial reality." Shania nodded. "To remain within a gate is unwise." She glanced around, willing the possible exits to appear. A dozen pillars materialized in a ring around them, between each pair was an archway. "Six choices? How generous!" Herlas raised his hands, thumbs and index fingers touching to form a circle, a spell forming in the enclosed space. He peered through it as through a window. "Which shall we choose...?" "To go back to Ghea!" Vurand answered. Shania formed her own spell, so easily, so strongly, it was as if she had never been diminished by the failure of the Arcanum. A true pleasure, and one she would be reluctant to forego, though Vurand was correct. A return to their friends and comrades in Aruak City was-- She turned slowly, looking through each of the six gates. None of them led to any Ghean location. She frowned. Then how had they gotten here? She had heard of one-way gates, but they were rare. Of course, for a trap, such a limited gate might be of use. "We should go that way," Rughal said, stepping toward one of the archways. "Why? There's more power over here!" Herlas indicated a different gate. "This is the right way," the ranger said. Shania had come to know that stubborn look! Rughal had made up his mind and wasn't going to change it. She examined each gate in turn. Herlas was correct; one gate suggested more power beyond it than the others, a second had nearly as much, but of a darker flavor, and the others, including Rughal's choice, showed little difference between them. Vurand's voice cut across her thoughts. "I say we go with Rughal's gate." "It seems as good as any, unless you can make some other suggestion, Lady Shania," Ashon Chang said. The Fratsfan's face hardened into lines as stubborn as that of Rughal. "I am going there." He pointed to the gate that seemed likely to lead to the most power. "Then our ways part here," Shania said. "The rest of us are going through this other." She nodded toward the one the ranger said was "right." Herlas hesitated. Shania wondered if he could forego the extra power to keep their group together. Then he said, "So be it." He moved toward his choice, stepped through. For a moment he remained visible, as though seen through the distortion of running water; then he was gone. Shania sighed. Herlas had a dark side, and she feared that where he had gone, that aspect of him would be developed at the expense of what was good in him. But each man had to choose his own fate. "Let us hold hands as we go through the gate," she said to her companions. "It will make us less likely to be separated in the transition." It was peculiar. Adie was aware of her body, extended in a perfect lunge. But on another level she seemed to be nothing but spirit, also stretched into the equivalent of that lunge. It was not, in any way she could identify, the elf in front of her now, however. She was looking into the heart of a dark vortex, plunging toward that dark vortex. Torrents of black energy were rushing forward with her. The collector! She tried to draw back, to anchor herself in her body. Awareness of her body had vanished. Reached for Cho and Fandil to anchor her spirit. They had vanished... no, she could sense them, faint as ghosts, attempting to reach her. They would not reach her soon enough, would not be able to hold her strongly enough if they did. The vortex was her fate. So be it. But she was no helpless victim, and she would be the fate of the vortex, as well. She began to gather all the powers that remained to her, coiling her spirit into a compact sphere, ready to move and to attack in any direction once the threshold of the vortex had been passed. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. You want to hear from the best, so here I am. And if you expect the most, what better to talk about than ME. Blue Velvet, what a wonderful name and what a wonderful DM career. Eat your hearts out, guys! My "birthright" was as an 11-16-4-17-21-4-11 WS. Indeed, I am the fourth in a line of cloned wastes, with faves of BS/VH/VL/parry. We are all ambidextrous and blessed otherwise. As the fourth in line, the jealousy of The Commission personnel began to show, as they would not allow me to TC as all others of my clone family did. I graduate with 2 advanced masters, 2 masters, and an expert, so I have learned my share. I've won a lot, taken some DM thrones, and generally made all of you jealous with my exquisite abilities. Too bad! I am what I am, and you aren't what you aren't! I will probably go on to TC in the advanced realms somewhere, in a land where I am wanted for what I am, and jealousy does not reign supreme. I leave you all behind, realizing that I have done all that I can for you guys, even though you all have so little to work with. Good luck to my manager, Purple People Eater; he will need it putting up with you crass lot. Adieu. Blue Velvet SPY REPORT Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARUAK CITY this turn, and let's start with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for SCARLET KNIGHTS, whose 0-3-0 this turn dropped them by 7 into 15th. SKASMONAUTS stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 7 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 3rd place. Good work, guys! The LORDS OF CHAOS guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, ELMER FUDD fought HOT DOG and gained 20 points and contributed to LORDS OF CHAOS' 3-1-0. AQUA ARACHNID has lost to JEB MERCLUE, falling 12 points, while helping make ANIMAL FARM a 3-2-0 turn. This week's Duelmaster bout was between REQUIEM and our Duelmaster BLUE VELVET, making a challenge. Defending hers title for another turn, BLUE VELVET kept BALLAD OF THE BLADE's warrior, REQUIEM, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Bulldog Inn uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the GERFEL'S FRIENDS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARUAK CITY, what are you afraid of? And avoiding GERFEL'S FRIENDS more than any other team we find BULLDOGS. ARUAK CITY, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that HOT DOG from BULLDOGS was ARUAK CITY's most challenged warrior this turn. In a fit of brilliance or of stupidity (hard to say sometimes), ELIZA PIGERON challenged BIG DOG today, facing a 37 difference in recognition. But when the dust settled, ELIZA PIGERON had lost to BIG DOG, and TUFT TUGGERS left ELIZA PIGERON doing chores when they went to the tavern. Better luck next time. In a brave attempt, NATAS from DO IT AGAIN challenged up 19 points to fight ROCKIE DEE from the KRILL CAVALRY stable. NATAS perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he subdued ROCKIE DEE and ended up with 52 recognition points. We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and shave it close? DOOR KNOB must have surprised WAR-C-KERS this turn, after they sent it to the Dark Arena, but the Dark Arena couldn't hold it! We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARUAK CITY and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Damn.... -- Jeb Natas -- I've got an idea, how about if we do NOT try it again. -- Windchaser, with other fish to fry You can have apple pie with the fish. -- Ed. Eliza Pigeron -- Golly, they told me you Fratsfan were stuck up, but I didn't realize it was that, um, firm. -- Lini Dawnwind Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- I consider that a fair trade: you get two skills, I get the win. And I appreciate it, I really do. -- Jo Mooncatcher Louie C -- I'd be glad to play it again for you, Sam. Any time. -- Rockie Dee Treestump -- Seems like we run into treestumps everywhere these days. Somebody had better get to work clearing these fields properly! -- Jon Fleet Jon Fleet -- What else is one supposed to say? In the p-ads? I think some have been struggling with that question for years now. -- J.J. Cooke M. Whifflebat: 12(+1)-14(+1)-10-13-17-5-15. Good/good. Bonus of three in attack. I'll not divulge all his favorites at this time, but I will admit that he used his favorite weapon in almost every fight, which is very good news, indeed! -- Generalissimo Puerco P.S.
