But she herself stopped in her directionless plunge, so smoothly that she didn't realize she had ceased to move forward until she saw the energies rushing past her. She hung now in a featureless void. There seemed to be no way she could grip her environment to affect it, nothing in the void to affect her. That, she was sure, would change. Whoever had brought her here would-- Ah. There was another presence in the void. Male. Half human, half something she did not recognize. The primary characteristics seemed to be power and ambition, a hunger for yet more power. Khaldren, most likely. Good! She had some things to say to Khaldren. Time passed. The male presence drew itself into a focus and spoke/telepathed to her: *Who are you? Submit! You are at my mercy!* He believed that? She was not so helpless as he might think. Adie knew that her amusement would be perceptible to him, as his arrogance was to her. She did not answer. *Who are you? Identify yourself immediately!* And give away her name to an enemy? No. Names were powerful handles in some magical systems, and she was not going to give Khaldren an easy handle. His presence was becoming intensely impatient. That was a serious weakness for a mage. Could he curb it, or not? If not...she checked to make sure that her defensive formation was solid. Khaldren launched an attack. Not one that would have bothered her even if she'd been unprepared, but a minor mage or a non-mage would have been in trouble. She allowed her amusement to deepen, knowing it would provoke an arrogant man to rash action. It did. Another attack, stronger. She formed her mind into a mirror and reflected it back at him. Ah. So he wasn't completely careless--he managed to deflect the ricocheting energy. He would probably make a third attack, stronger yet, but Adie decided not to wait for it. This was getting her nowhere, providing neither information, nor an angle of effective attack on this enemy of Alastari, nor a way to destroy the collector. Fandil's thoughts brushed against her awareness, and she stopped her automatic attack just in time. The old mage extended a figurative hand. *It's time to leave here, Adie. Cho is anchoring this line of retreat--* Adie took hold of Fandil's "hand," keeping a mental eye on Khaldren as she did so. If the enemy was aware that she was about to escape-- Ah! He was, and he had something different to try this time. She couldn't quite see what he was up to, though. That was mildly disturbing, since his other attacks had been simple and uncomplicated. Powerful, but obvious. The vortex, which had been a background to this fight, changed...color, flavor, temperature, something changed. It "whirled" in the other direction, reversed to the original spin, reversed again. She tightened her link to Fandil as the vortex went through another series of disorienting changes. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #3 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Morning was as overcast as the night had been. There was no sunrise, just a fading of the sky from black to gray. The air was colder than it had any right to be at this altitude and season. Huw studied the clouds, the mountain, the river, and muttered incredulously, "It's going to snow." The elf came to stand beside him on the brink of the hill. "In the summer?" "I don't think it IS summer here now." He shivered. He'd brought a poncho, because it was always cold in the mountains at night, but this was colder than he'd planned for. Colder than he had expected, or could believe possible even while it was happening. "Do you suppose the Black Kaliv can control the weather?" Tankesh duplicated his study of sky, mountains, and river. "Apparently." He frowned. "That's the trouble with blood magic. A man has to be unscrupulous to use it, but then it gives him a LOT of power for his unscrupulous purposes." Huw felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. "Why would he want to make it winter in the middle of summer?" "Who knows?" He stared at the mountain opposite their position without seeing it, studying the decision he had made in the night. It felt like the right decision, finally--so many things had shoved him one way or another since he'd left Andor, but now, finally, the choice was in his hands. This is where he would stop. The demons would chase him, or drive him, no further. His hand went to his sword without conscious thought, not drawing it, just touching the hilt. Killing demons wasn't easy, but it could be done. He would do it here. Somewhere right around Murska. Huw was still staring at the town. Finally he sighed. "There was a rumor in Riztab saying that all the dwarves had retreated underground, and I don't see any in the streets. I guess it's true." He paused, still watching the people not so far below them. "Lots of Shews, though, more than used to be normal." Tankesh didn't know much about Shews. The ones he'd met in the arena tended to be slow-moving and not too bright, but did that apply to the race as a whole? It seemed unlikely. "Could the unnatural winter have brought them out of the hills and forests?" Huw shrugged. "Maybe. Or the demons." "Will the Shews help fight the demons, if we get to needing more men?" Huw glanced at him and then away. "Ah...maybe. They don't like demons--who does? But they don't like Andorians, much, either, and they really don't like Fratsfans...and elves." Tankesh raised an eyebrow. Elves were the goodest of the good guys, everyone knew that--even when it wasn't true. "And this would be because...?" "There was a war, a long time back, how long depends on who you ask. The Fratsfans throwing their weight around, and the Shews didn't like it. They fought all over this part of Alastari. I guess it got bad, even for a war, and Serimna knows the 'best' war is bad enough. And Shews have long memories." "I don't recall hearing about such a war. Who won?" "The Karnhorns. Isn't it usually third and fourth parties who come out ahead after a war?" One of the clouds turned inky black, and a bolt of blackness shot from it to the mountain peak. Thunder roared. Pine trees exploded into purple fire. Rocks shattered and slid downward. A second bolt of darkness joined the first, which had not faded. "The demons have arrived." Tankesh said. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. It seems like millions of years ago when the egg cracked and I entered the world with a tentative "hoot". My mommy and daddy, both members of the near-extinct pure black owl species, created a 13-19-15-9-18-4-6 gosling. (Well, they called me an ugly big black goose!) It didn't take long for me to hit the road on my own, looking for fame and fortune--and then along came Mino. Seam, where I came from, was a Consortium stronghold, and the old pirate was quick at grabbing the fittest critters and molding them into something more special for the life of a gladiator. Seam closed down the fighting competitions, and when "The Invasion" of Aruak City was announced, Mino convinced Kennelworth, a Consortium brother who had just retired from that city, that both teams had to take a stance on the cause of "Health. Humility. Honor." for The Heart And Soul Of Andoria. So, now, here I am as Aruak City Duelmaster and soon Lord Protector. Life has not always been easy as I have worked hard to earn my 25-15 record. Consortium Total parries are deemed "good" if they graduate with only single digit losses, so I guess I do not fit into the upper levels. Tournament life has been no better, as my mere 17-17 record would indicate. I have, however, come a long way. I have worked hard with the weights in the gym and am now a svelte, black 15-21-15-11-21-5-8. You would have thought I would have done better since I did great damage from birth and was even a little blessed in initiative (How does a TP use that?) but I never could find a good weapon, with 1/75/7 using the broadsword being the best I could do. (I appealed to the commission to designate my beak as a weapon, but to no avail.) Because of that, I am expecting that I will be given a favorite weapon which would be unsuited to my physicals-- probably something like a longsword. (I hope!) I have learned an awfully lot of skills, but am currently only rated as adex parry and expert Initiative. Since I have really not won as many fights as I should have, I would expect that my favorite rhythm is unusual to what I have typically stepped into the ring with. Mino's guess is something like mod/mod. So what's next for me? Well, in my final fight I will challenge somebody, but it will certainly not be an aimer like Branford Hawke or The Singing Bandit. (Guess whom I will avoid?) We'll see. Then it is on to the grand world of retirement. I am looking for a pretty white swan or albino Canadian Goose to see if we can parent some zebra-type feathered friends. Wouldn't that be ducky! So good luck to you all. It has been fun. It was a hoot to send those invaders running back to their mommas with their tiny little tails dangling. Keep the faith. Onyx Owl SPY REPORT Hail ARUAK CITY! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as UNDER WATER is pushed out of top team by TUFT TUGGERS, who came from 6th with a 5-0-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for UNDER WATER, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 10th. KRILL CAVALRY stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 7 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! The ANIMAL FARM guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, HONEY fought HOT DOG and gained 20 points and contributed to SCARLET KNIGHTS' 2-1-0. JEREMIAH JAY COOKE has lost to JON FLEET, falling 10 points, while helping make GERFEL'S FRIENDS a 1-2-0 turn. This turn ONYX OWL challenged SKAMAKAZE in what was ARUAK CITY's Title bout. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and ONYX OWL remains ARUAK CITY's top warrior for another turn. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the NEVERWAKE stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARUAK CITY, what are you afraid of? And avoiding NEVERWAKE more than any other team we find ANIMAL FARM. ARUAK CITY, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that HOT DOG from BULLDOGS was ARUAK CITY's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, FRANK ZAPPA from THE HEADCUTTERS II challenged up 25 points to fight SKATTERBRAIN from the SKASMONAUTS stable. FRANK ZAPPA perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he defeated SKATTERBRAIN and ended up with 109 recognition points. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Why fry it if you're not going to eat it? Lady Protector Onyx Owl -- In line with the problems being experienced all over Alastari, we cannot offer you much in the way of "lands." It seems that earlier generations of Lord and Lady Protectors have cleaned us out, and not just here. In most cases, by what I gather over the, ah, intradepartmental network (we do NOT gossip, mind you!), the awardees have generally neglected their lands and often haven't been seen in years. Efforts are being made to recover these abandoned properties, which MAY lead to the possibility of grants of land at some future date. But for now, all we can come up with is the loft of a barn out on the Krill Cavalry's pastures. I suppose you could sit in the upper door and hoot? They tell me the roof is sound, which is something. -- Shinketh, Aruak City Arena Agent 4 August 2005 Ladies and Gentlemen...The Announcement You Have All Been Waiting For Is Here!!!!!!!!
