*He's trying to dislodge us.* Cho's thought was clear, stronger than Adie had
expected. He seemed closer, if such a comparison had any meaning here in the heart
of the vortex.
Fandil's thought chuckled. *So we're a burr in the sock of evil?*
Adie laughed, too. To have such friends beside her in a time of trouble was
better than armor. *If the burr in the sock is big enough and sharp enough, it can
cripple the foot.*
*Let us do so.* Cho's mental presence came closer yet, and it was stronger; the
shape of it changed, becoming a sort of caltrop of magical energies.
Adie raised a mental eyebrow. The Adantri was a surprising man. A surprising
magician. His power seemed to be increasing steadily. Where was he getting it? She
probed gently. Cho was tapping the very vortex that contained them for his energies!
It seemed a contradiction, since he was using that power to disrupt the vortex. Ah,
Fandil had noticed, too; she could feel her old friend's unease.
So could Cho. *The vortex is a whirlpool in the river* Cho thought at them.
*It is the power of the current in general that I am drawing on, in order to smooth
out the flow.*
     *How? Can we help?*
*I don't think so.* Cho's mental voice was strained. Breathless, in a way. *I
am able to tap this power because my father could. It is not something that can be
taught, at least not easily. It is--*
The vortex wrenched through a fast reversal of spin, bucked like a maddened
horse, reversed, reversed again, and seemed to plunge over a precipice.
The three mages hung in a featureless place, bodies slowly condensing around
them, as the vortex fell away.

The gate was neither cold nor hot. There was no up or down, forward or back.
Nothing to see or steer by. Shania's hands tightened on those of her friends, Ashon
Chang was to her right, Rughal and then Vurand on the left. She could feel the
uncertainty in them. "Step forward," she said. "Move and keep moving."
"But there isn't any forward!" That was Vurand, a very worried orc.
"If you take the step," Shania said, "it will DEFINE forward, so long as that is
your intention. Think only of advancing, and your movements here will be an
advance."
To each side of her, the warriors took a step forward, and another step, and
another. She blessed the good fortune that had given her companions who had more
trust than fear. An archway condensed out of the nothing around them, straight ahead
and wide enough to take the four of them abreast. Beyond it she could see sunlight,
and grass, and a tree. She wanted that sunlight, that grass and tree, very much, and
she stepped forward hand in hand with her companions.

Adie stared around, but there was nothing to see. Even the roaring cataract
that had been the vortex falling away was gone now. "Some kind of limbo," she said,
half to herself. "Did our enemy do this, or are we free of him for the moment?"
"We're on our own," Cho said.
"But let's not stay here," Fandil added. He glanced at Adie. "I've been trying
to do a teleport or a gate, but there's no response."
"Different rules here," Cho said. "And no response is a lot better than the
wrong one."
"We have to find a way to get out," Adie said. "There are things we have to
do!"
"We have one way of escape," Cho said. "The Sojourner told us--we can use
Megarlane's Key and come out at a tavern in the world which is not Ghea."
"What is Megarlane's Key?" Fandil asked.
"A spell. I know it. But there are problems," Cho said.
"Aren't there always?" Adie began to twist a strand of her hair around one
finger, frowning at him. "Do we have any other options? And are the problems ones
we can solve?"
     "No, and yes."
     "Then do it."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Aruak City,

As there is no Duelmaster last turn, I will assume the honor of writing a column
having been the last one upon the throne.

I will use this opportunity to remind outsiders within our fine city, and those who
may be watching the arena news, that Aruak City is a place where we avoid death. The
culture of the mainstay of managers here, and the people of the city, is one of
respect for life. We expect people who manage teams in Aruak to have respect for,
honor, and practice this code of conduct. How you protect life in Aruak is up to
you.

If you believe in killing to achieve one's ends and endorse death in the arena by any
means, those who protect the ways of our City, the Heart and Soul of Andoria, and
its values, will find you....

Health, Humility, and Honor!
Kalidor the Bold

                                      SPY REPORT

Much has changed in ARUAK CITY since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen
adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Biff! Pow! ARUAK CITY
watched with glee as KRILL CAVALRY got knocked off top spot by TUFT TUGGERS!
Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave DO IT AGAIN a 1-0-0! I got a
good laugh out of it! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down.
I think I'm gonna be... Well, IMMORTALS' 6th moved them up to 3-2-0 place. What's
with VIRGINIA'S SECRET? He actually beat NEVERWAKE's HALO, and walked away with 24
more points from the fight. Laughs were big at WAR-C-KERS while they watched
VIRGINIA'S SECRET clobber HALO. She lost 18 points and got bruised from objects
thrown from the stands. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for THE HEADCUTTERS II's
outstanding member, Duelmaster FRANK ZAPPA. Wouldn't it be nice to have live
subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted
prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was NEVERWAKE. The bums at BULLDOGS couldn't face the challenges
from NEVERWAKE! No excuse for that! What do people see in YELLOW STREAK? His
14-6-0? COLORIFIC ain't talkin', but he's got 95 points. HOT DOG didn't quite know
what to make of a challenge he received from WILLIE DIXON of THE HEADCUTTERS II, who
is 22 points below him. WILLIE DIXON perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was
bested by HOT DOG and ended up with 84 recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. DJANGO REINHARDT looked pretty sick and surprised
when he learned THE HEADCUTTERS II is sending him to the Dark Arena! Whadd'he expect
with a 12-10-1? Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the others they'd better
shape up. Tough beans, FIVALO. That's what a 6-12-0 gets you. How long have I been
here? I got people to see, places to go...
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. ARUAK
CITY is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Willie, Willie, you just don't have what it takes to beat The Streak! Capiche? --
Yellow Streak, Proud Colorific

Fivalo -- I am so sorry you could not find your silver lining. I did! Heh, heh. --
Silver Lining, Proud Colorific

You don't sound sorry. -- Ed.

Sure, Little Tankesh, Sure. Now I suppose you are going to exaggerate and say you
went 3-0 or better last turn??? Well, I did! I did! -- Purple People Eater, Proud
Colorific Manager

Convicted Thief -- Lucky you. You still live. -- Blue Eyes, proud Colorific

Torrey Fategiver and Immortals -- Ye scalliwaggers! Yon Aqua Arachnid twern't mucho
boldly eight-legger, but he were mine! -- Mino

Gorge and Doc -- Just love you guys. Thanks for the easy win. By the way, I hope
you both croak. -- Tangerine Toad

Bionic Buffalo -- Should we "Do It Again"? I liked that result. -- Pink Puma

Burst -- You Dog, you burst my bubble. Great challenge by The Doc. -- Turquoise
Tiger (feelin' blue)

Branford Hawke -- You are just too nutty for me! A hawke beats an albatross any day.
-- Almond Albatross
P.S. When is either one of us graduating, anyhow?

Virginia's Secret -- It does not bode well for you that I won that fight. I am a
pretty poor warrior and rather thin skinned. -- Calfskin

Scummed by The Convicted assassin???????? I am about as bucking worthless as they
come! -- Bucking Brahma

Street Legal is my understudy? Well, Doc, I suspect there is a small modicum of
truth to that. I guess you could say that 40 or 50 managers in Alastari are my
understudies. After all, I have been helping and coaching and encouraging newcomers
for more than 20 years. -- Kennelworth The Old

Dream Killer -- How did I do that? Amazing! As you can see, I am quite pleased with
myself. -- Bull Horn (tooting his own)

Lini Dawnwind -- New Lord protector, CONGRATULATIONS! Well deserved. As top
warrior, we designate you winner to get free drinks at The Bulldog inn. See you
there. -- Kennelworth

Delarquan Fodder, Tankesh? How crass! But so true. (wink) -- Kennelworth

Dirk Darkblade -- I pulled out all the stops on that one. I feel mooty powerful! --
Moo Moo

Frank Zappa -- Salute! You were way too much for this Ballpark Frank. Wowsa! -- Hot
Dog

Mr. Steele -- How kind of you to write me a personal ad. I feel honored to hear from
you. I wish you good luck with turning your malignant team record around. You have,
indeed, set a lofty goal for yourself, trying to correct/improve a 59-86-40.7% which
has been representative of the initial team management. I truly hope I live to see
the day the Neverwake can be improved to over the mediocre 50% W/L. Please hurry
(say within 10 years) so I can be around to host the celebration at The Bulldog Inn.
-- Kennelworth

Lini Dawnwind -- Congratulations on your immortality. You are one of Leeta's rare
exceptional warriors...to graduate in less than 40 fights! -- Tankesh

Neverwake -- 2-3, one of them the DA. You're moving up in the world of Aruak! Well
done! We know it's hard. -- Tankesh

The Immortals have returned! Seems obvious given the fact that they are, well...
immortal! Welcome back, Dartor! -- Tankesh

Kennelworth -- Thank you. I will indeed take this rare opportunity to indulge in the
Bulldog's exquisite selection. -- Kalidor

Kennelworth -- Don't I warrant being a 'Lady' Protector instead, being a woman and
all. ;) -- Eliza

Kennelworth -- That 5-0 was certainly unexpected. It was a fine way for my team to
wrap up before going through a period of quick and large changes. After Halloween,
the Tuft Tuggers will look nothing like they did the other turn. Perhaps only one
familiar face.... -- Tankesh

The conjunction of Halloween and looking nothing like they did makes me think
you're buying a lot of masks? -- Ed., ever literal

The Singing Bandit -- Indeed, just three more turns. Can I make it? I am a
veteran.... Damn I sound old. -- Branford

G. Puerco -- The RUGS were in an ok mood, we'll see what I get.... -- Tankesh

The Scribe -- No worries, good stuff the last couple turns. -- Tankesh

Almond Albatross -- I gave you your shot, but you couldn't manage, so I put you down
in the end. -- Branford

Treestump -- You were a bit easier than a treestump actually. -- Jeb

Shinketh -- No worries, Adie's got a place for us, and if there are so many abandoned
lots from LPs who've disappeared, I'll just nab one of those myself. -- Eliza, who
may just go back home....

Kennelworth and Tankesh -- You guys are looking at what I name my throw away warriors
now!?! I am actually flattered that it is so important to you to track my every
movement. Perhaps you would like an autographed picture you could tape to your
computer monitor, so you can stare at it all night while you think of new and
improved cleaver jibes? -- Doc Steele

Sounds like a great offer! -- the Scribe

Pink Puma -- A fairly unlucky confluence of events there, getting matched up with you
two times in a row. Not exactly a favorable match up for me. Such is the life of a
gladiator. Do you celebrate and gloat over each of your downed opponents, or is this
a special exception in the Consortium's vaunted honor code because I am managed by
Doc Steele? Anyway, I'm glad you found extra pleasure in the victories; I suppose
that is a compliment of sorts. -- Burst of Neverwake

Kennelworth -- You say you only avoid the very best, to prop me up I suppose, but if
memory serves, the Consortium has avoided Neverwake on more than one occasion. Hmm?
-- Generalissimo Puerco

All -- Never mind! Dartor has returned. Hi D, just keeping an eye on the Immortals
stablehouse for you. -- Generalissimo Puerco, the ever-helpful

Leeta -- How's that for a headline: Krill Cavalry Rules Aruak City Arena! Well
done! Your lot sure ruled over my puds. -- Generalissimo Puerco
P.S. I can't NOT mention poor Thunderblade. If Lini hadn't killed him, we'd have a
Duelmaster. It wouldn't be Lini, though.

Lini Dawnwind -- Congratulations Lord Protector. Will we see you fighting on the
Isle somewhere? You seem to have real potential. -- Generalissimo Puerco

Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- Are you sure you're not a bullfrog? You look like you could
dance. -- Rockie Dee

Rick Derringer -- I bet you say that to all your opponents. -- Windchaser

Stu Hamm -- Don't see learns like that often! And in twenty-five seconds, too. --
Jon Fleet, teacher extraordinaire

Ghost of Thunderblade -- Ouch. Really sorry about that. -- Lini Dawnwind

Bootstrap Ribeye -- I'm a little surprised that I won that. Interesting fight. -- Jo
Mooncatcher

Almond Albatross -- Is this a case of Almond Joy? -- Jo Mooncatcher

I had Almond Joy pancakes the other day. They were waaaaay too sweet. -- Ed.

Use baker's chocolate instead of milk chocolate, and they come out okay.

Ed. -- I bet they could if they tried! -- Windchaser

No, it just doesn't work. I know of at least one salmon who tried desperately
     hard to be a kangaroo--still a salmon. -- Ed.

Lady Protector Dawnwind -- Umm, you wouldn't care to go with another barn loft?
Since Onyx Owl was pleased, maybe this is the coming thing for lady protectors? --
Shinketh, Aruak City Arena Agent

                             HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.

I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101

26 September 2005
Regarding the Regional News:
If any of y'all glance at it and find some arenas are behind, rest assured I'll
get them caught up next time around. I was trying to unsnarl the darned thing, but
it was just getting worse, so I decided gradual and partial was better than not at
all or ever. -- The Saint, keeper of lists
