There seemed no end to the grassland, and it was less pleasant to walk through
than had at first appeared. The grass that had been knee-high where they arrived was
often, very often, taller. Sometimes it grew densely and was difficult to push
through. Sometimes it was matted and tangled, and it tripped them. They got hot,
and thirsty, and hungry, and their legs got very tired before Rughal, who had taken
over the management of this part of their adventure, allowed them to stop. The sun
was half way down from the zenith to the western horizon by that then.
"If we can find a good place, we should camp for the night now," Ashon Chang
said. "I don't know how far we've come, ten miles? Far enough, at least, than
anyone looking for us at the point of emergence won't find us there. We have the
stream down there," he gestured down the slope to the line of trees, "which will give
us water and maybe game. And we are none of us," he glanced at Rughal and Vurand and
amended that, "some of us are not used to so much unrelieved walking. We need rest."
The ranger and the orc exchanged looks and nodded.
"The three of us'll stay here while Rughal scouts--" Vurand began. Then he
stiffened and hissed, his hand going to his sword as he bared his fangs.
Men were emerging from the line of trees, about a dozen, Shania thought, armed
and moving in good order. Elves, Kyan or Shagornan in Alastarian terms; swarthy and
dark-haired, anyway. In this land of sun, anyone who didn't tan would be burned red
by the sun. She was conscious of reddened skin on her arms, nose, cheeks, despite
the broad hat that Vurand had woven for her out of grasses. Sunlight winked off the
blades of their spears, and off their helmets.
Shania was aware of the way the men with her formed a defensive shield around
her, and each man readied himself to fight. Only Vurand actually drew his sword, but
the others were clearly on the edge of it.
"We don't know whether they're friends or foes yet," Ashon Chang warned.
"They're elves," Vurand growled. "That's enough to know."
"Some people would say that about you as an orc," Shania answered.
"No stranger is free from suspicion because of race, or automatically suspected
because of race," Ashon Chang said. "Let's not fight among ourselves!"
"Elves are generally wiser than humans--or orcs--because of their greater
lifespan," Shania said stiffly. "That is a widely accepted--"
"No elf is born old, and some of 'em just use the extra years to develop their
vices," Vurand countered.
"No fighting among ourselves," Rughal and Ashon Chang said together.
"They've got prisoners," Ashon Chang added. The samurai squinted down the
slope. "A woman and two I-don't-know-whats."
"Yes, and you don't know WHY, either, so--" Shania stopped herself with one
hand over her mouth. After a moment, she said quietly, "I don't know what is coming
over me. I haven't been so...contentious in...a very long time. Since I was a young
woman."
"Your body is young again, you said that you felt it so when we emerged here,"
Rughal said. "Perhaps the younger feelings are coming back to it, also."
"But I have all my memories!"
"How would you know if you didn't?"
"I'd-- Oh. Not so good," she muttered, half to herself. "I don't know what I
might have forgotten. But I do know, despite what I said a minute ago, that not all
elves are sweetness and light." She watched the troop of elves come nearer. They
were marching as a trained unit, and by their alertness and readiness for combat she
deduced that they had enemies in this area. They did not alter their course as they
cleared the trees, and they weren't coming directly toward the four on the slope. In
this wilderness of grass and emptiness, Shania found that a surprise. Until she
spotted their bows.
As one, the four dropped flat to the ground. Arrows whistled over them.
"Unprovoked hostility," Ashon Chang said. The samurai didn't sound upset, just
thoughtful. He parted the grass in front of him so that he could keep an eye on the
elves. "That argues either great fear, or great arrogance."
"Or both," Vurand said. "The arrogance I can believe. What do they have to
fear? And can we hook up with their enemies, if we can find them?"
Rughal's voice came from higher on the slope. "Riders coming," he said. "A lot
of them, maybe a hundred."
"More elves, or their enemies?" Ashon Chang turned to look at Shania. "Can you
see them with your magic?"
"Unless they're shielded in some way, it should be easy," she said. She closed
her eyes and concentrated on shifting her consciousness into a non-physical point,
projecting it upward so that she could see farther, see over the crest of the hill.
There was a moment of dizziness, and then a view opened below her.
To the east and south grassland rolled away into infinity. To the north the
land rose, becoming rougher and rockier, with a line of blue at the farthest reach of
her vision. To the west, not far away, it fell off into a deep, wide valley, lush
green growth, and the glitter of open water in lakes and streams. A beautiful land
in every direction, beckoning explorers.
But she turned her magical eye away from it and looked nearer at hand. A large
group, more than the hundred Rughal had guessed, perhaps twice as many. Traveling
together though half were mounted and half on foot. Her point of vision swooped
lower. A rider at the head of the group looked up, raised a staff that was set with
crystals and symbols in gleaming gold. He began to speak.
Shania jerked back into her body, gasping. She had barely escaped the spell
that sought to blind her magical vision. "Slavers," she gasped.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of ARUAK CITY! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Who can explain it? Not
you, not me, not LETHAL HERITAGE's opponents, after watching them shoot up the ranks
from 16th to 4th. Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave THE
HEADCUTTERS II a 1-2-0! I got a good laugh out of it! What's with DIRK DARKBLADE?
He actually beat DEADMAN'S HAND's GALLOWS POLE, and walked away with 25 more points
from the fight. Laughs were big at KRILL CAVALRY while they watched JO MOONCATCHER
clobber HONEY. She lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the
stands. Another fighter (CALFSKIN 17-22-1) challenged another Duelmaster (VIRGINIA'S
SECRET 20-19-1). Life goes on. CALFSKIN was reminded on the sands why VIRGINIA'S
SECRET is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I
hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, NEVERWAKE! In my day, no team with a 65-90-10 would scare me off! What's
the problem, BULLDOGS? What do people see in HALO? Hers 15-6-2? NEVERWAKE ain't
talkin', but she's got 92 points. Maybe BULLDOGS' BUCKING BRAHMA is one of those
guys who likes pain, or something. That's what he'll get next week, after
challenging up 28 to BRANFORD HAWKE. BUCKING BRAHMA did pretty good last week in
beating BRANFORD HAWKE to get 20 points. Why did BRANFORD HAWKE lose, you ask?
Simple: he wasn't good enough. Keep challenging up 28 points, GOLDEN AURA, and I
won't have to write about you much longer. TREESTUMP always accepts those kind of
challenges... Sometimes what you expect to do (like in the fights) doesn't expect to
turn out like you thought. GOLDEN AURA beat TREESTUMP. It don't make sense.
Warriors of ARUAK CITY unite. You have only your games to lose! Here's some
advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Lon Braddock -- And they say that the Whiffle is a worthless weapon? OUCH!! -- Sun
Tzu

Embezzling Scribe -- That will teach you not to take what does not belong to you! --
Ghengis

Adrian Belew -- Need to come at me with more than just a dagger, friend. -- Rommel

Bar-B-Doo -- Looks like I stepped into the 'doo' that time, huh? More like my Water-
doo. *grin* -- Napoleon

Gorge -- Ya got the jump, and it was over. Skill hog!! -- Patton

Aruak City -- My first turn here, even at 2-3, is something special for me. Since my
return to the game, this is the first time I've had opponents from FOUR separate
teams (and one stand-in)! Not too shabby. *smile* -- Lord Xiang

Kennelworth -- Thanks for the welcome!! Andorian cities are always so friendly.
Unlike 'Larq cities, yours shuts down by 9pm. Where are the all-night bars? The
houses of ill repute? The hotels with 20 minute 'nap' specials? I propositioned a
woman my first night here (offered an excellent gratuity, as well), and got my face
slapped!! No sir! Your streets might be clean, and you might have little crime,
but your town is BORING!! *sigh* Maybe I'll invest in a startup business or two in
town. *evil grin* -- Lord Xiang

Mino -- Ahhh, now THERE's a kindred soul! Care to go into business? *chuckle* --
Lord Xiang

Hey, Shinketh The Chintzy, that was all I needed. (wink) Good Bye. I'm outta here!
-- Almond Albatross, Lord Protector

Har de har! Again, Frank Zappa? Two TV challenges in a row and you lost? Both?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. All I can say is "thanks". -- Almond Albatross, Duelmaster

Greetings, Jackhammer. Mino told me to say that The Consortium always especially
enjoys a win over the Steele Stables. What I wanted to say was that you sure are a
hotty, and thanks for the easy win. -- Tangerine Toad (really a princess in disguise)

Take THAT, Torey Fategiver, you animal killer! -- Pink Panther

Avast ye mateys, me Turquoise Tiger done gone dead meat at yon Mailer. Damme! Bea
missin the wench! Aye. -- Mino

Saraya Steel -- I showed my true colors--black. You are lucky I thought you cute and
let you live. -- Black Plague, Proud Colorific

Honey -- You pack a punch with all that sweetness, Babe. Let's get together off
site. -- Yellow Streak, Proud Colorific

Lord Xiang -- Despite your fine request, we deeply Andorian Folk do not feel welcome
in Mordant. Perhaps had Mr.T. or Pretty Pandora not retired from The Consortium,
they would bring their blood and guts presence to that arena. However.... --
Kennelworth

Shinketh -- A bun coat? Well, OK? One that doesn't get eaten up all the time,
however. -- L.P. Hot Dog

Congrats to Branford Hawke. -- Kennelworth

Virginia's Secret -- Finally! We welcome you to The Bulldog Inn for the free drinks
deserving of a great Duelmaster. Cheers. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor

Lord Xiang -- If you had read last turn's newsletter, Kalidor The Bold made a fine
summary of what it is like to be Andorian. And Adie occasionally "posts" the
expectations of those committed to Aruak City. Health, humility, and honor in The
Heart & Soul Of Andoria. -- Kennelworth

Gladius -- I knew I could depend on you for the skills. Thanks. Had hoped for a
lucky win, too, but.... -- Moo Moo

The Singing Bandit -- Wow! That one made me feel good! Perhaps I can earn my keep
after all. Thanks for the skills, too. Gerfel rocks! -- Bucking Brahma

Jo -- Great fight! You did well, lovely lady. -- Hot Dog

All -- Bulldogs everywhere wish one and all a Happy Thanksgiving. -- Kennelworth

Branford Hawke: 8-12-10-11-17-5-21, AB. MO/LO, SS. ma/att, ex/par, ex/rip. Learns
riposte. SO slow to learn, but I still managed a decent winning record! I'm hoping
to avoid THAT issue with my next recruits.

Congratulations to the luscious Victoria's Secret, our Duelmistress! Having you up
there is so tantalizing! You must be close to getting off to immortality soon! Good
luck! -- Tankesh

So how did everybody do in the tourney? I'll let you know as soon as I do! --
Tankesh

Almond Albatross -- Mino is like Kobe beef! He gets better with alcohol and a good
massage! I hire somebody for the latter, but when the ol' cow comes out, he's my
best buddy! -- Tankesh

Oh no! Our favorite soccer star got killed! :( Condolences to Headcutters. -- Jeb
Merclue for Tuft Tuggers

Who is this fruitcake? -- Tankesh, motioning at Lord Xiang

Lord Xiang -- Let me get straight to my point...welcome! Now for details. First
off, Adie is way too busy to do the manager thing, so I'm in charge, I run the Tuft
Tuggers. Second, I can't imagine her inviting you, a 'Larq here, so I won't even
ask. I couldn't imagine her going to Mordant either, although that I do find that a
somewhat intriguing idea, but I'm always bogged down with demons and psychotic
Karnhorns... <rolls eyes>. Anyway, I can be gracious and I will extend Aruak's
warmest welcome to you and thank you for your willingness to be one of us, an Aruaki,
for your stay. It's policy among we defenders to not TELL anyone HOW they have to
manage their teams, just that they don't downchallenge, except from the throne, or
MAYBE an occasional blood feud for some easy wins, some like the Consortium won't go
for it even on a BF, go figure. Hey, I say they deserve a few losses! Ok, back on
track...do try NOT to kill people. Some others might tell you otherwise <cough Doc
Steele cough>, but pay them no heed, we don't tell or force people to play with
certain strategies, period. Ignorant is all they are of what it means to be Aruaki
and Andorian. It's all about attitude. We don't WANT to kill each other, so we do
what we can to avoid it. However <looks around to make sure nobody is listening> if
you can't stick to something so open ended, hey, you said it not me, I'll tell you
what to do exactly if you want? How about that? It's easy, don't have your
gladiators aim for vitals, head, chest, etc., and make sure they're calm, they
shouldn't have a high desire to kill. <Tankesh suddenly looks devious> Actually,
why don't you just always aim arms, and have your guys just stand around...how bout
that!? ;) -- Tankesh
P.S. Oh, I did mention you're quite welcome here, right? :)
P.P.S. I was joking around there at the end, and I'll assume you knew that since
you're a sharp manager, right? So play hard, I expect a good challenge. When I
stomp you I want to make sure it wasn't because I was going after easy pickings.

Kennelworth -- Hey, how'd you know Lord Xiang was showing up last turn? YOU, it was
YOU wasn't it? You invited him! Damn it...good job! ;) -- Tankesh

PPE -- Getting a new team. -- Tankesh

Rockie Dee -- I wanted a locke of your hair? Since when? -- Branford
P.S. Nice try, I'm off to the isle.

I like beating up dangerous criminals. Makes ME feel dangerous! ;) -- Jeb

Hail Aruak City -- Well, it's been over nine years; hope you're ready for a new
infusion of old blood. Bloodgrog, that is! Set 'em up, Kennelworth, grog's on me.
Hope if my turn made it. You all don't laugh too hard at our rust. -- Grog

Burst -- I may never get the sand out of my ears. You certainly burst over my
horizon! -- Jon Fleet, accredited teacher

Branford Hawke -- You hate me! (bursting into tears) You can't stand to be near me!
I...I hate you back! -- Rockie Dee

Hot Dog -- You remind me that I haven't had dinner yet. Thanks. I believe I will!
-- Jo Mooncatcher, eater of hot dogs with mustard

Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- You huffed and you puffed and you just blew me away. I forgot
to anchor myself properly. -- Winchaser

Bastion -- Your skull burns? Hmm, have you tried soaking your head? Or aspirins.
Or maybe both. -- Koro Cloud

Tankesh -- Stereotypical. -- Lini

All (the warrior) -- Sure! I never turn down a free drink. -- Windchaser

Lord Protector Branford Hawke -- Hmm, your name gives me no clues, your manager
provides you with quarters that should be adequate for all but the most sybaritic, so
what sort of thing are you expecting from the Gladiatorial Commission? -- Shinketh,
Arena Agent

12 October 2005

in Kelowna, B.C. -- Maximillian, 8,13, 28, 47, 54
