"We should split up," Vurand said. "If we stay low, some of us might escape
detection and capture."
"Better to stay together," Ashon Chang countered. "If captured, we can escape
later, but to find each other in this wilderness of grass if we become separated--"
"We should split up," Vurand repeated. "If we don't, capture is certain, and
Rughal...." He coughed suddenly and didn't go on.
"Truth is truth," Rughal said from a different direction. "I cannot survive in
captivity. It is bred into my race." His tone was matter-of-fact, very cold. "It
is why our enemies are reluctant to corner us--we always fight to the death. But not
always OUR deaths, because we are very good at fighting."
"And that's the truth, too," Vurand said with feeling.
"They have a magician--the other, bigger group does. We can't hide from--" She
paused. Her greatest skills lay in the field of gathering information, and the study
of that almost automatically included the ways to block scrying and detecting spells.
"There are counter-spells, though. Anti-detection shields. Hmm." She sorted
through her stock of spells, rejoicing in the strength of the arcanum she would be
able to draw on here.
Time crawled by. It felt good to lie in the sun and rest, but Ashon Chang would
rather have the fighting done first. It was hanging over them, something they would
have to do. Waiting seemed...no, not pointless. But it stretched the nerves. From
his position lying flat in the grass near the top of the slope he could see little.
The dozen men in the valley had passed across his field of view before they turned to
come up the slope. If they turned. He pressed his ear against the ground.
Nothing. A confused suggestion of distant sound, presumably the larger group
Shania had seen. Where was Shania? He couldn't see any of his companions. That was
probably a good sign. Maybe the slavers couldn't see them, either. But it didn't
follow. Not for certain.
Soft clop of hooves near at hand, only a few. The mounted men from the valley.
Coming closer, he thought, but not fast. Wouldn't do to run a horse up this kind of
slope, especially with the tall grass to impede progress, too.
The first horse came into sight, ten feet away, crossing his field of vision
from right to left below him on the slope. Slim gray horse, slim dark man with elven
features, what he could see of them through the open front of the helmet. Tunic of
chain mail visible through tears in a loose surcoat of broad vertical green and gold
stripes. Blood splashes on the surcoat, and a bandage on the man's leg. No spear,
bow in its case, so the immediate weapons were just the sword and dagger belted to
the man's waist. It would be easy to take this man, if he were alone. Which he was
not. But the four of them--and the three prisoners if they cut in, but better not
count on that--could take this dozen, piecemeal. Take their horses. Could they get
away from the larger group then? If only they'd had time to plan properly!
"You're farthest upslope, the last one they'll pass." Shania's voice,
whispering in his ear. Or maybe in his mind. "Get the one in front of you, and
we'll each do the same, then go for the rest of this group. With the horses, we may
be able to escape."
Was it a good plan, or not? Hard to tell. But one thing the samurai knew for
sure, if the others attacked and he didn't, that would be a betrayal and a disaster.
He came off the ground in a lunge, throwing himself at the mounted man he could see.
Because of the slope, the two men were almost on a level. It was a complete
surprise, his opponent had no time to brace himself, and they both went off the horse
on the downhill side, rolling over and over through the grass.
They fetched up against a rock, the elf underneath. Ashon Chang banged him
against the rock a second time for good measure, then paused. There was no mistaking
that particular limpness. This opponent was dead.
He scrambled to his feet and looked around.
Confusion.
At first glance, fighting all over the hillside. Very few people were mounted
now, although some of the elves were still in the struggle. He saw one pulled off
his horse by the two chained not-humans, some kind of lizard men they looked like,
and had a good idea what fate was in store for that elf. Those fanged snouts held a
grim promise.
Ashon Chang focused on the nearest elf still mounted and charged.
Shania finished her opponent with a hard chop to the throat, crushing his
windpipe, and straightened, looking around. All the elves had been dismounted, and
the struggle was winding down. They had been victorious in this, but against the
larger group they would have no chance in a fight. How best to handle it, then?
She saw Ashon Chang near by and signaled him over. The samurai was liberally
splashed with blood, but by the way he was moving, little of it was his.
"We did better than I'd hoped, Lady," he said. "With these horses--"
"We still won't be able to escape the larger group," Shania finished. "Not
unless we provide a further distraction."
He looked at her, puzzled. "What else could we--?"
"You and Vurand and Rughal take the prisoners and the horses and run for...
wherever Rughal thinks you'll be most likely to find help." She didn't give him a
chance to utter the protest she saw forming. "I'll take just one horse and lead them
a merry magical chase. By the time they catch me--"
"No! You can't--"
"Yes, I can, and I would judge myself the best suited for this role, too. I am
a woman and a fellow elf, which should offer me a measure of protection. And I am
the only one who can use magic effectively to distract and mislead THEIR mage." She
shook her head at him. "If we took these horses, even though we'd have a spare each,
we would still be caught. Not fast, maybe, but sooner or later.
Ashon Chang was silent for several minutes, frowning. She could almost see the
thoughts rushing around behind his face. Finally he said, "Neither Rughal nor Vurand
will consent to this--"
"They won't know until it's too late to stop me," Shania said. "It's your job
to distract THEM till I get clear." She caught up the reins of the nearest horse and
swung into the saddle. "This truly is our best chance, my friend."
SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of ARUAK CITY! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Woof! BULLDOGS were a
bunch of dogs after MANIC MARVELS got through with 'em! 2nd ain't so sweet as 1st!
Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna
be... Well, THE HEADCUTTERS II's 12th moved them up to 2-1-0 place. Some people say
I ramble too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well
ANIMAL FARM moved up 4, to 3rd. What's with TREESTUMP? He actually beat COLORIFIC's
GOLDEN AURA, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight. See how the
Duelmaster challenged MANIC MARVELS' LORD BENNETT? That sort of initiative is how he
got where he is now. LORD BENNETT was reminded on the sands why ONEWOLF is
Duelmaster. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your
fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
NEVERWAKE. Management must be dealin', as the boys at THE EARTHBOUND ain't reelin'!
NEVERWAKE's mad! What do people see in VIOLET VULTURE? Hers 3-0-0? ANIMAL FARM
ain't talkin', but she's got 30 points. WILLIE DIXON of THE HEADCUTTERS II knows how
to pick 'em. He challenged JO MOONCATCHER of KRILL CAVALRY who is up by 19. Now was
this a wise move? WILLIE DIXON perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he overcame
JO MOONCATCHER and ended up with 96 recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the
others they'd better shape up. Tough beans, SIR BOB. That's what a 5-13-0 gets you.
We all knew it had to happen sooner or later. A warrior can't stick around with a
6-5-0, and TREESTUMP easily took care of GOLDEN AURA. Here's some advice: study
your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

I Carry Them -- Welcome to Aruak City! I hope you find the company warm, if
obnoxious! -- Lord Xiang, mgr. Lethal Heritage
Platemail Politics -- Welcome back! -- Lord Xiang, mgr. Lethal Heritage
Blood Grog/The Earthbound -- Hope it was just a hiccup, and you'll be back this turn.
-- Lord Xiang
Violet Vulture -- Congrats on your TV! Hope I can provide more of a challenge next
time we meet. -- Napoleon
Turquoise Tiger -- Pfft! In Mordant, you'd be a throw-rug! *grumble-grumble* --
Rommel
Torry Fategiver -- Holy COW! I thought for sure you had me! And with those two
kills in four wins, I felt I was a goner. Hope we both learn better in our next
encounter. -- Patton
Kyle The Pincushion -- DE-FENSE! *stomp-stomp* DE-FENSE! *stomp-stomp* Gotta love
those defense skills! -- Sun Tzu
Blue Eyes -- From IKE?!? That sorry @$%%#% lily-sniffer! He couldn't give pointers
to save his life! Never mind anyone ELSE'S!! Why, back in the Hellenic Wars, I
commanded more respect from my slaves than I provide to that nincompoop! -- Patton
Kennelworth -- My thanks! I do try to provide some 'stuff' to back up what my mouth
spurts. It always helps when you're having fun, too! -- Lord Xiang
Doggy Bag -- Not always, no. However, a win is a win! -- Napoleon
Tankesh -- I hope you and Adie had fun in Japan (where ever that land might be)!
Never made it over there, only Europe. -- Lord Xiang
Tankesh -- Broaden my horizons, eh? Swords, spears, axes, etc. are NOT props! They
are tools of war. I can (and HAVE, mind you) accept that not all peoples look at
what should be the best training tool for an army (even an army of slaves) as sport.
Entertainment for the masses. PHAH!! Those entertainers of yours, once inducted to
the Isle, are training for the Last Battle. To battle the creatures of Chaos
themselves! Why? Not so those conglomerates that own the arena can secure more gold
from ticket sales! They will be there to FIGHT A WAR SO OUR FAMILIES CAN SURVIVE!
Why handicap them by not training them right NOW so Sheila Greywand won't have to
start over from scratch once they get to her? Anyway, those are my opinions. I will
help Aruak City entertain the masses, as I promised. But PLEASE don't expect me to
enjoy the idea. -- Lord Xiang
Tankesh -- I...see. Shall I run that through the Translator? *evil grin* -- Lord
Xiang
Congratulations, Onewolf of Doc's Wolfbrothers. Achieving Duelmaster in Aruak City
is a fine feat--and with such a great record! Salute. Duelmasters drink free at The
Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor
Lord Xiang -- I must admit that I and my associates enjoyed your Delarquan
interpretational rendition. There is one interpretation that I think needs amending,
however; and that is the one that implies that tourists (read--everyone) drink free
at The Bulldog. While it is true that certain honored folks drink free, (like
Duelmasters and all former Aruak City TC's) the establishment is in business to
profit ever so slightly while providing the social center for arena affiliated
clientele. So, bring your full billfold or checkbook. We even allow Amex. --
Kennelworth
P.S. In my recent near one year hiatus, Lady Adie managed and directed the age-old
Bulldog Inn in my absence. She made significant improvements, and enhanced the
status of the business, thereby becoming named minority partner. Upon my demise, the
businesses becomes 100% hers no strings attached.
By the way, welcome back from Japan, Lady Adie. -- Kennelworth
Nuln, Tankesh -- Expecting a TOGS style commentary from The Nulnster may result in
nothing because that is what he has been reported to be providing in Aradi at the
moment. -- Kennelworth
Branford -- ANY fight I win is about pure luck, but I must admit I took extra special
pleasure at THAT luck! (wink) -- Bucking Brahma (The Bucking Lucky Bull)
Bodel -- Yep. Rode, and rode real heavy! -- Bucking Brahma
Koro Cloud -- Don't worry; I will put a tight tie on the bag. -- Doggy Bag
Dirk Darkblade -- Well, moo moo. Who'd a thought it? You Immortals have always been
our most difficult foes. I am proud! -- Moo Moo
Singing Bandit -- My my. Whoopee ti yi yo! -- Bucking Brahma
Uh, Mr. Xiang, what was that about "one more win"? Next turn or two, huh? Well,
this one will be number two. -- Kennelworth
Napoleon -- There must be some good use for a vulture after all? -- Violet Vulture
Rommel -- Both you AND Napoleon? I used to know General Custard (and Colonel
Mustard!) pretty well. Perhaps I could talk both of them into giving you two guys
some pointers? -- Turquoise Tiger
Nancy Wilson -- You were much easier than Domingo. -- Magenta Maggot
Thankee, Tankesh. Bloody swell o' ye, landlubber! Aye. -- Mino
Jeb Merclue -- Now THAT must have been embarrassing?! Now just how many FE's more
than me do you have? Perhaps it is the management? -- Blue Eyes, Proud Colorific
Burst -- Did you challenge ME? You must have known that would be a loss. Didn't Mr.
Steel clue you in? I saw Gorge just bit the dust after losing. Are you next? --
Golden Aura, Proud Colorific
Tankesh -- Well, duh! I can see you are STILL working on it, Tank Boy. Too much
sake, not enough smarts, I think. -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager
Xiang Man -- You always slather up the words that much? -- Purple people Eater, proud
Colorific manager
Hey, Mino, you piddly pirate. My colors have a better record that your critters.
Bow down, plank bait! -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager
Requim -- Well son, at this point we know who's better, perhaps not down the road
however. Got a feeling this next fight will be my last, we'll see. Good
competition, well done, glad I won! See ya! -- Bodel
Smash -- Guess it kinda went the other way this time. Damn lucky I got my challenge
by the sounds of everyone in here wanting a piece of me. -- Mr. B.
Bootstrap -- I like my rib-eye medium, thank you. Big Lou strikes again! -- B.L.
Honey -- Sure didn't feel like Honey. -- Lord Bennett
Sandman -- I am the sleep master. -- Domingo
All -- This is it my fellow warriors, this turn is my last fight. Enjoyed fighting
most everyone of you. Won't be moving on so decided to give you my #'s 10 (1)-13-10-
15-17-6-14 had a LO fave w/ mod, VH and just loved those dec. skills +2 def +4 dec AX
init Exp rip AX att Mas Def AX dec. We'll see what my replacement looks like. Good
luck, ya'll !!! -- Bodel
Doc Steele -- You caught Mr Zappa with his pants down. He challenged Onewolf with a
slowed down strat but you got your challenge through against his "fave" strat and his
endurance failed him, despite ten hits (his damage doing failed him as well). Now on
to another fact. This is bringing up something very old but I must do it anyway.
You once pointed out that there was an average kill percentage of 6% in arena 18 and
4% here. And stated that there was only a 2% difference in kill ratio, thus proving
our style of play did nothing to prevent kills just annoy many.
A) That's a 50% increase in kill ratio not 2% and
B) Have you noticed in your lengthy time here that kills indeed are greatly
reduced compared to the average arena?
I'm not trying to be an pain in bringing this issue up. I'm just asking to see
if you see yet the point that was made long ago, whether you agree with Aruakian
methodology or not? -- Street Legal
Barnabas -- A hearty welcome back to you, my friend! Hope you'll find a reason to
stick around for an extended period of time. I realize I have fallen out of touch as
of late but know that my thoughts have been with you! I hope life is treating you in
a reasonable manner and that the future will bring new joys! -- Street Legal
Aruak City -- I have returned to the field and I have brought my legions with me. I
am and ever have been a Delarquan, but I am here to finish what I started years ago.
I am here with a specialized legion in order to further relations with you Andorians
and the free cities. While inside your walls I'll try to follow your rules and keep
down what you consider corruption, but you have so few things here that
satisfactorily entertain a 'larq so I may have some few "mishaps". Then again no one
expects a politician to be virtuous anyway. -- Seraphim/Platemail Politicians
Lord Xiang -- Didn't expect to see another 'larq here. I expected the excitement
from years ago would have died down by now. If you have a moment, I'd like to buy
you a real drink; something a little stronger than the milk they serve at the local
establishments here. I need some advice on how to keep my gladiators behaved. --
Seraphim
Adie and Tankesh -- We've spoken before, many years ago. I hope we can resume
negotiations. -- Seraphim
Onewolf -- What took you so long!?!? Heh heh, looks like one of Doc Steele's finally
made it to the top. Three teams and how many years later...? Well, enemy or not,
you're still the Duelmaster for now, so get your drinks at the Bulldog and enjoy! --
Tankesh
Xiang -- Hey, nice spot! Despite all our hidden meanings or what not, as you
interpret it, at least we're diplomatic! -- Tankesh
Bulldogs -- Are you avoiding our newest 'Larq competitor already! High praise for
Xiang! ;) -- Tankesh
Lord Xiang -- Thank you. While I'm in Home Guard I'll be sure to spank the 'Larqs so
they know there isn't a difference in fighting skill between, as you say, 'battle'
and gladiating. And when I get booted from the Guard, I'll probably spank people in
Andorak too. -- Kalidor the Bold
Blue Eyes -- Had to give it a shot before the BF ran out. But hey, at least I've got
better targets being low ranked. -- Jeb
Surrender -- I think not.... -- Kiri
Lon Braddock -- Magic and arrows are my forte, not this little blade, not that you
could tell. -- Elinae
Xiang -- Looks like we're still building our team. Got three, maybe four, but the
recruits have been good until now, I can't complain. Aruaki rugs are a tough lot. --
Tankesh
Gallows Pole -- Don't look now, but you need to be taller for that. -- Jo Mooncatcher
JJ Cooke -- You're just getting so MEAN. I'm all gazebo. -- Rockie Dee
Is that like being all ears? -- Ed.
Bionic Buffalo -- You were shedding electronic bugs all over the sand, and they BITE.
-- Windchaser
Doggy Bag -- The concept is disgusting. -- Koro Cloud
P.S. My dog doesn't accept leftovers.
Coup -- I'm amazed you made it that far without losing! Good try, kid. -- Jon Fleet
Calfskin -- And the first thing you need to get on that shopping trip is glasses.
I'm not a girl. -- Jo Mooncatcher
Kalidor -- The Commission lists you as a golem. -- Shinketh
