No matter what purpose we had for posting, it is easy to interpret that this was offered as bragging and attempting to belittle someone. It is not our desire or policy to do so. Doc Steele is a DM Hall Of Famer and is highly respected within the game. We (and our boss, Wayne) apologize to him and to all DMers for the posting. ......................................................................... In Aruak, even Doc Steele seems to be an ok addition since he actually stuck around and is our habitual nemesis to try and beat up on. I'm sure the Consortium has a record against him that is no small laughing matter, and it's flaunted a lot in the ads. For those who are interested.... They only represent the active Consortium warriors, and if all Aruak City Competition between the two groups were offered, the results would be 16-7. The Consortium Elders + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Out of the Past #14 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Aldanira: They could hear more furniture breaking behind them. When one of these shapeshifters lost control, there was no half-way about it. The priest and the civil servant were going to wreck that room. It was annoying, because Adie was sure that they were needed back in Aruak City. Okay, probably they were needed here, too, but they didn't know why or to do what. With Aruak City, they did know. She looked at the merchant leading the way down the inn's back steps. In feature, he appeared to be a Karnhorn, a narrow dark face with a beak of a nose; that was influencing her impression of him. He might be quite a reliable person, despite his looks. At the foot of the stairs, Fandil paused, looked at the door, then back along the corridor that ran to the front of the inn. "Should we warn the innkeeper that there's a fight going on upstairs?" Katuchim paused with his hand on the door and looked back over his shoulder. His eyes were nothing but shadows under his heavy brows in the dim light; he looked predatory. "It isn't quiet," he said. "Somebody will have noticed." Fandil still hesitated. "It's already sunset," Cho said. "We need to get moving now." Katuchim nodded and pushed the door open. The inn yard was a bustle of horses and men as travelers hurried through the gate. The inn would be full tonight. If anyone noticed the merchant and the three strangers leaving, they didn't say anything. Probably didn't care what strangers did, Adie decided. Katuchim kept to the edge of the yard and finally opened a small gate that she hadn't seen, half- hidden behind a parked wagon, which let them out into an alley. The alley ran east and west, and the light of the setting sun poured down it like honey, a haze of gold where it lit the shifting dust raised by passing feet. It was hard to see anything through it. To her surprise, Adie was uneasy about stepping out into that river of light. Which made no sense. She was a priestess of the sun, how could she question...or doubt, or whatever she was doing, the...what? The cleanness of the sunlight, perhaps, or its integrity. That was nonsense. How could it be anything but what it was, the greatest light, the ultimate well of life? But something was wrong here. She grabbed Fandil and Cho each by a sleeve, and dragged them back against the fence. "Don't go out there!" Both men, magicians as strong as she was, looked at her, then at the alley. She could tell that they weren't sensing any problem there. Finally Fandil said, "We'll keep close to the south side of the alley, in the shadow, but we have to move on, Adie." If she could have named what was wrong, she would have argued. But how to convince another person of a feeling of unease that he didn't feel? "I guess. But be careful. Keep a shield up." She felt their defenses go up and relaxed a little. They might not understand her warning, but they believed it. She'd known magicians who would not have taken her word for something they couldn't sense themselves. Katuchim, now twenty feet away, realized they weren't following and looked back. "We have to hurry! We dare not be out here after dark--" "None of us are shapeshifters," Adie protested. "No, he's right, Adie," Fandil said. "Where ninety-five percent of the people HAVE to be inside after dark, anyone who is out is conspicuous and suspect." He shrugged and moved down the alley, hugging the shadowed side as he'd promised. "When in Fratsfa, do as the Fratsfans do. Come on." When he saw that they were following, the merchant picked up speed. He didn't run...quite. And he seemed to know a back alley for every turn of their route. Adie saw very few other people out on the streets, well, on the alleys and what streets they glimpsed in crossing them. And those people were hurrying, too. The sun was dropping below the horizon, half gone, and it was clear that no one wanted to be out in the dark. She'd understood that, intellectually, when Cho had explained it earlier, but it hadn't felt real then. Now it did. What would the Aruaki Clanholds have been like, if they'd had to impose such a curfew on themselves? The neighborhood got scruffier the farther they went. Not poor, but rough and undecorated. Warehouses and downscale inns. Stables. The people she saw here were not as anxious to get indoors, though most were headed for shelter, and they were different in face and clothing from the general population. Foreigners. Katuchim dashed across another street, a narrow one, and plunged into another shadowy alley. And reeled back, a cut on his arm and his sword out. Cho had his own blade out--you never saw an Adantri without a sword. Fandil was holding his staff like he meant to use it as a physical weapon. Adie hesitated, briefly. You can't cast a spell from behind a shield. Did she want to lower her shield? A glance at the fading sunlight. Maybe not. Well, she had a staff, too. Not the most efficient use of a magical stave, perhaps, but she whipped it up and around, whacking one attacker on the shoulder hard enough to break his collar bone--and cause him to drop his dagger, then drawing it back and ramming the butt into another man's belly. Fandil broke a knee with a low swipe, spilled another man onto the ground with a dislocated shoulder when he brought the staff up under his arm like the kick of a mule, broke the ribs of a third with powerful sweep. Cho...Adie looked away. The old Adantri was drenching the alley in blood. Katuchim was standing at the edge of the fight, just staring. Had he thought them helpless? The last two attackers turned and ran. Smart move. Adie glanced over the battlefield and pointed to one of the fallen. "That one should be taken along and questioned." "Yes." Fandil was breathing hard but seemed undamaged, and Cho was also looking fine. "No reasonable robbers would have kept on fighting after you counterattacked," Katuchim agreed. "And while I have enemies in the usual way, none who would set up this. None that I know if, anyway." He sheathed his sword and hauled the stunned robber to his feet. "The emporium is just down here." He entered the alley again. Katuchim's place of business was as much a fort as a trading compound. As they neared it, the heavy gate swung open just far enough to let them in, then slammed shut behind them. Katuchim and the man who'd let grabbed a bar and slapped it into the brackets. The merchant turned to the other man, a younger version of himself with a bare and bloody sword in hand, and frowned. "What happened here, Telechaz?" The young man shrugged. "Oruman wanted to bar the gate BEFORE you got here--we could hear the fighting in the alley, and I--" "Did you kill him?" The young man's lip curled. "Just a nick. Oruman is a...." "Oruman is my partner," Katuchim said, holding up a hand in warning. "Think before you call him names. Where has he gone?" "Back to his quarters, I suppose." "Then let us go make sure he is all right." Cho was squinting across the torch-lit yard. "What is your city and house, Katuchim?" "House of the Dolphin," the merchant answered. "Why? We're from Arloysha." "And your partner?" "From L'Firnissia, an affiliate of the House of the Gull? So?" The old Adantri snorted. "If you need to ask--" "We swore oaths. We have been partners for six years. His daughter is pledged to my son here," a gesture indicated Telechaz. "We swore oaths. He may have been simply...upset and confused." "Let us go ask him that." Adie leaned closer to Cho as they followed Katuchim and his son across the compound. "What is this about? Remember, WE don't have any local knowledge." "The two trading houses, Dolphin and Gull, have been rivals for generations. And the Firnissenes have a bad reputation. It must be a tricky partnership under the best of circumstances, and the strains our arrival has put on it might..." Cho shrugged, hesitated. "Might make problems where none were imagined before. Or I might be imagining them, of course." Ahead of them Katuchim knocked on a door, then pounded on it, and finally rattled the handle. "No answer, and the door is barred," he growled. "Telechaz, get an axe!" "No!" Fandil grabbed the merchant's tunic and pulled him back from the doorway. "There's magic at work in there--" "Something like a very small Gate," Adie said. "Is that practical here, Cho?" The old man shrugged. "Practical...that's a conditional judgment. It's possible. Wasteful of energy. But it makes a good escape route in emergencies. If no one realizes in time to block it, which we didn't." "A magic door?" Katuchim stared from one magician to another. "I have heard of them, but the cost! And why would Oruman have one? He is no mage to make it himself. Where would he buy it?" "I don't--" Fandil, who was sniffing the air like a hound, waved a hand to shut them up. "Adie, Cho, can you feel something else? Almost hidden by the residue from the Gate. It feels like...some kind of fuse, maybe." "Fuse?" The merchant backed away from the door. "For an explosion?" Fandil nodded. "I think so." Katuchim turned to his son. "Get everyone to the far end of the compound, then bring axes. If Oruman has left us a parting gift, we will open it carefully." The younger man ran off. They could hear him shouting, and the sound of other people calling out and moving around. A few minutes later he was back with a pair of axes. He and the merchant attacked the door. "I can't get a feel for the time limit on this fuse, if that's what it is," Fandil said. "Or for what it's triggering." He looked at Adie and Cho. "Either of you?" Cho shook his head. Adie started to, then said, "I can't tell how long there is left, but...no, I don't know WHAT it is, either, but it feels like the sunlight in the alley behind the inn. It feels like something WRONG." The door splintered under the axes, and blades of light, golden as the sun, flashed through the cracks. Cho cursed and backed away, pushing his companions behind him. I noticed that last turn Onewolf did not get his column written, so this time I am stepping in for him. Wit is not exactly a primary requirement for a scum TP, so I'm not sure how entertaining Onewolf's column would be if he remembered to write it anyway. In case this has not dawned on you yet, this is Doc Steele. I have always believed that the Dulemaster of any arena is a rare and high honor. I also believe that not writing a Duelmaster's column is a dishonor to that fine tradition of champions. You have my sincere apologies for missing last turn's column. I was very ill, and actually left it to Onewolf to do. This arena runs at the worst time for my personal schedule, so I have fallen horribly behind in my personal ads. I have here in front of me seven newsletters going back to turn 525!?! I will attempt to answer some of the more interesting ads in this column, so that I am caught up. I'll be skipping all the "great fight, bad fight" type ads, and looking for more of the political issues to address. Let's get started. Turn 525: Kennelworth -- I had referred to Street Legal as your understudy at some point, and you responded that over the last 20 years you had helped maybe 40-50 managers. When I made my comment about Street Legal being your understudy, I referring more to the specific way in which both of you try to defame my character at every turn with out of context statements, assumptions, and often out right fabrications. I have always handled my Duel2 interpersonal communication with significant consideration for the skill level and game accomplishments of my adversary. Obviously, both your game and your personal ad banter are infinitely more advanced than Street Legal's clumsy attempts to be a noted manager. I was just taking a little shot at you in our usual fashion. Our relationship seems to have improved lately, so hopefully that will continue. I prefer an edgy rivalry to outright hatred. I will refrain from lumping Street Legal in with you in future correspondence. Kennelworth -- You took another shot at my poor arena record here by wishing me luck in climbing back above 50% in ten years. I made a statement like this would be a marathon and not a sprint or something like that. I have said before that I do think my record deserves a certain level of abuse. I will make no excuses. I do want to clarify that when I said it was a marathon I was thinking more like three years, not ten. A small disclaimer here is that is three years of playing. I may be forced to make serious Duel2 cut backs to pay for my little girl's education. I'm doing my best to stay active in 11 as I am having fun, but I may be forced to make tough decisions. Either way, I do not expect the cut backs to last more than two-three years, so I'll get it done eventually. Turn 526: Not much there, just the usual banter with the Consortium and Tankesh. Turn 527: This was the turn where Lord Xiang showed up with a personal ad saying he was a Delarquan, but wanted to play according to local customs so please explain them. I have not read the responses yet, but I can guess there were a LOT of them. I thought that as a resident Delarquan in Aruak City I should give my perspective. It has changed significantly recently, so it is probably worth reviewing my politics. I do not ask anyone to follow my lead, so I will not address to this Xiang. Some of you may have noticed that I am UP challenging these days in Andorian arenas. What I decided was that by and large I respect the managers that I collectively refer to as "Andorian." There are a few that I could do without, but that holds true for Delarquans as well. I got mad on the internet one day a couple of years ago with some things some Andorians were saying and got into a flame war that lead to my arrival here in Aruak City. My message was lost because shortly after my arrival the Sloshers staged their ill fated "Invasion." I then began to argue with even those managers that I respected here in Aruak City because they were upset with the Sloshers and refused to see a difference between us. Frankly, in those early turns I was pretty mad, so perhaps there was no difference. My game play philosophy of that time was not even my "usual Delarquan" style, but a harsher version with 9 kill desires. What I have come to realize lately is that my usual style of play that I refer to as Delarquan is misleading. I down challenge, but I also do NOT avoid. I have spent years and years trying to get players of all regions to agree to not avoid with me. What I realized is that the majority of my fellow Delarquans who claim to play in this manner, do not follow the same rules. They down challenge, to be sure, but they avoid as much as anyone else and then hide behind the "Delarquan way" as an excuse. I do not like seeing the "Delarquan way" distorted in such a manner, so I decide to help change that. Several months ago with no fan fare I decided to change my style of play. It is my opinion that up challenging and avoiding are about equal in terms of competitive advantage with down challenging and NOT avoiding. While down challenging AND avoiding is a huge advantage. Since I have not been able to get more than a few bold managers to play my way with no avoids in 22 years, something had to change. I am now up challenging and avoiding in Andorian arenas and playing my usual way with NO avoids in my Delarquan arenas. I hope that the Andorians appreciate the level of respect I am showing their traditions with these changes. And I hope that the Delaquans hiding behind the "Delarquan way" will consider what the Delaquans before them really were trying to do. I have been a villain for many years in this game and I expect that will not change. I only hope the younger generation of "Delarquans" that want to follow that path might one day consider a no avoid policy as well. It is difficult to come off as a rough and tumble bad guy when you are avoiding those you attempt to malign in the ads or on the net. As for killing, I will not do anything different in that area. I do not wish to debate killing in general. I come from a time when killing was rewarded in the games with extra points, and the slayers were praised as the mightiest of warriors. I am still Delarquan, so that will not change. I utilize all of the attack and protect locations and 5, 6, and 7 Kill Desires depending on my strategy needs. If some of you feel that you must continue to despise me for this choice, then so be it. When I stopped down challenging, I lowered my kill desires from 9 across the board. Again, that was out of respect for the players of Aruak City. I am no longer trying to kill all of my opponents here. I believe kill desires below 5 are detrimental to most strategies, so I will not be using them. I have given a few free passes on down challenges since I did not publish my change of style. My play has always been about being competitive, so I will not allow someone to take advantage of my new respect for Andorian traditions. If you down challenge me, you open yourself up to the same tactics from me in the future. That will start the turn after this column is published. Lord Xiang -- Welcome to Aruak City and good luck! Do I know you from a Delarquan arena in the past? Your name sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it. Turn 528: Lord Xiang -- One thing my Andorian friends will gloss over in their advice is how much they avoid. Almost every turn the Consortium makes fun of my poor arena record here. And almost every turn one of his three teams is caught most avoiding Neverwake, the same team that he makes light of in the ads. That used to upset me until I realized that it is not just "okay" to avoid, but absolutely expected. Without avoiding, up challenging would be a terrible strategy. It was this realization that helped me come to the decision I did about my style of play. I no longer get mad when I see that I am most avoided, by someone who is bantering with me in the ads. I take it as a sign of respect and par for the course. I hope that helps. Tankesh -- I saw you could not help but mention my name when discussing killing with Xiang. I got a kick out of that. My kill % has dropped from over 20% to 15% since I dropped from 9 KD to my usual set of 5, 6, and 7. I expect that it will settle at around 6-10%, which is fairly normal for my teams. I hope that my new up challenge philosophy will allow you to overlook a couple of extra corpses. I'd like to bury the "Invasion" hatchet and move on? Turn 529: More discussion on what it means to be Andorian with Xiang. My only comment to Xiang this turn is that I urge you to consider NOT following at least one Andorian tradition. They seem to have developed an odd sense of what it means to be a good sport when it comes to winning and losing individual battles in the arena. Personally, I feel a bit more restraint on a satisfying victory is more in line with the honor code they claim to follow. I was brought up to believe that humility in victory was as important as composure in a defeat. They do not all do this, but they do seem to all accept it as proper behavior. I thought it was worth bringing up an opposing view point. You do not have to transform yourself into an Andorian to respect Andorian traditions in this fine arena. Turn 530: Not much for me to comment on here. Turn 531: Kennelworth -- Thank you for the congratulations for Onewolf. He is just a poor scum TP reject from the pre-aimed blow era who needs to get to the Freshmen tourney where he belongs. Street Legal -- Don't worry about excuses for losing to Onewolf. I was not overly proud of myself for winning that fight on my challenge. Your guy had a nice run up there and is a fine warrior. Onewolf is just a scum TP that trained well. As for your brining up and argument from years ago about killing percentages being 6% in Talcama and 4% here in Aruak City I have only to say that a good statistician can make numbers say whatever they want to prove their point. So rather than get into the math I'll address the intent of your ad which was how I feel about killing after my stay here and the Andorian method of trying not to kill. I have documented at length how my feelings about the Andorian way have changed over the last few months. Please see above. However, my feelings about killing have absolutely not changed. Lower kill desires and restricted attack locations is a competitive disadvantage that I see no point to. A few extra deaths seems trivial to me when compared with the larger scope of honoring your traditions. I accept death in the gladiatorial games as quickly as I give it. I will always prefer to kill my opponents rather than just defeat them. I will respect your up challenge traditions, and I have lowered my KDs from 9 to 5, 6, and 7. From my perspective that means that I am sincerely trying NOT TO KILL. I believe that is what you are asking me to do. I hope that you are capable of accepting that as the olive branch that it is meant to be. I urge you to not lose the forest for the trees here. Respecting your traditions is one thing, transforming into an Andorian is another. I suggest we agree to disagree on the attacking vitals and low kill desire issues and move forward. Tankesh -- Nice little zinger there about how long it took me to get a Duelmaster. As usual, your propaganda machine spits out unfounded insults based on half truths. It took so long because until recent changes in the tourney system, I did not run warriors in the arena much past 20 FE. I am a tourney manager. You know that, but instead choose to spin the facts in a negative way. Is this the part where I am supposed to start spouting off my tourney resume? Shall we compare? I want to give you a free pass here since you have not had a chance to assimilate my game philosophy changes. However, no matter what your reasons for this type of behavior it is petty at best. I am happy to keep you in the enemy column regardless of my new politics if that is what you want to do? Golden Aura -- You go on acting like the strategy we used on that Burst match did not just about bring home the win. Burst's time to shine is later in his career, so we are doing what we can to keep his head above water right now. Seraphim -- Welcome back to Aruak City. Barnabas -- Welcome back to you as well. Well everyone that should give us some stuff to discuss. It is good to get caught up. Doc Steele, mgr. of Neverwake, Wolfbrothers, and Deadman's Hand SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last week's fights. A stormcloud is brewing over the NEVERWAKE guildhouse. Rumor says any more weeks like this ones 0-2-0 may send the team to the Dark Arena. BULLDOGS is no joke as it posted a 3-1-1 week advancing from 2nd place to 2nd place. Hey everybody, watch out for JO MOONCATCHER, who flew up 24 points in the rankings after mashing YELLOW STREAK like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was SKIRMISH, who dropped 11 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with MAGENTA MAGGOT. What does the Duelmaster and Piltdown Man have in common? They are both the most challenged apes in human history! Heyheyhey! In front of all the crowds, BIG LOU took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd! Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARUAK CITY arena. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid ANIMAL FARM, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ARUAK CITY really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: ANIMAL FARM + Weapons That go Boom = LETHAL HERITAGE + Avoid City. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ARUAK CITY have no sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BIG LOU 4971 18 7 2 123 MANIC MARVELS (456) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME REQUIEM 4472 18 13 0 111 BALLAD OF THE BLADE (415) JO MOONCATCHER 6370 17 20 0 108 KRILL CAVALRY (374) -HALO 6189 16 6 2 105 NEVERWAKE (508) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MOO MOO 6474 13 4 0 105 BULLDOGS (157) BUCKING BRAHMA 6372 19 11 0 102 BULLDOGS (157) ONEWOLF 5505 17 2 0 101 WOLFBROTHERS (506) -SUPERBEAST 4943 17 28 1 100 THE LIVING DEAD (454) -WILLIE DIXON 6385 9 20 1 96 THE HEADCUTTERS II (412) -LORD BENNETT 4974 18 5 0 95 MANIC MARVELS (456) YELLOW STREAK 6239 17 8 0 95 COLORIFIC (511) -WARCHANT 4470 6 1 0 94 BALLAD OF THE BLADE (415) CALFSKIN 6240 19 23 1 91 BULLDOGS (157) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -WIND RUNNER 5510 11 4 1 88 WOLFBROTHERS (506) -BOOTSTRAP RIBEYE 6465 13 13 0 86 GERFEL'S FRIENDS (253) BLACK PLAGUE 6550 10 6 0 85 COLORIFIC (511) -NATAS 6531 8 2 0 84 DO IT AGAIN (565) GLADIUS STARSTRYKE 6127 14 41 0 83 SCARLET KNIGHTS (375) TREESTUMP 6369 16 21 1 79 ELFQUEST (515) -JEREMIAH JAY COOKE 6520 11 8 1 79 GERFEL'S FRIENDS (253) ROCKIE DEE 6060 16 24 0 72 KRILL CAVALRY (374) -THE SINGING BANDIT 6349 17 19 0 70 GERFEL'S FRIENDS (253) -GALLOWS POLE 5496 9 5 0 70 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MR. I'd like to help you, but I don't know how to tell you to challenge the NPC's; besides, you'd probably lose anyway. Perhaps, if I were managing you? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager Convicted Assassin? I like 'em easy. I want Burst. -- Yellow Streak No, no! I want the Burst NPC again! -- Black Plague Treestump -- You killed Golden Aura on his challenge? The chump! Good for you. And here I thought you were a mere stump of a loser. I salute you. That Aura was a mere 9-14-11-21-9-5-15 ST, with lotsa Purple Blessings, but he could not hit hard enough. I told him to work the weights, but.... Some aura, the pud. Don't want losers on this Proud Colorific team. So, thanks, pal. But I'm hungry, you hear? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific manager To Rommel -- Well, you were much better than that Napoleon, you know. Still, you guys would be better off with a manager. -- Violet Vulture To Sun Tzu -- Was that yet another Xianger which bit the dust? And it was YOUR challenge? Throw rug, indeed! -- Turquoise Tiger To Mino & Lord Xiang -- Make that 3 (read THREE) Xiangers, Mino! Yep, this Maggot done whomped Napoleon on his own little challenge. Yessir. Looks like you finally beat somebody, and as usual it was one of us Bulldogs. -- Bull Horn Gladius -- Lucky, lucky, lucky. I am so very lucky. I feel like, bucking great! -- Bucking Brahma Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- A salute to you. It could have gone either way. -- Moo Moo Glasses, Jo? Maybe we're both just girls in disguise? Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Barnabas -- Old friend, welcome back to Aruak City, The Heart and Soul Of Andoria. Life was not the same without you. -- Kennelworth And you Seraphim, we are pleased to have you here. Aruak City needs more like you. Health. Humility. Honor. -- Kennelworth Street Legal -- That was an interesting Andorian question you posed to Doc Steele. I am interested in his opinion. -- Kennelworth Lord Xiang -- Is that the third turn now? Is the challenge you made over? Perhaps you would like to post an update to all on the status? (wink) -- Kennelworth May the New Year bring all friends and friendly competitors of Aruak City that which they most hold dear. Salute. -- Kennelworth and All Bulldogs Aruak City -- As of Turn 531, Animal Farm needs 29 arena wins in order to hit their 1000th victory. At their winning percentage, that puts them at Turn 540 to hit 1k wins. I believe Mino can bring it off by Turn 539. Any other predictions? -- Lord Xiang Gerfel's Friends -- It will either be this turn (532) or next that you hit your 700th arena victory. Congratulations! -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- 650 wins is near. Can you taste it yet? :) Perhaps if the RUGs give in, you can hit it this turn, or next. -- Lord Xiang Scarlet Knights -- 300 wins should be here (T532). Congratulations! -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- Ah, yes, the 'free drinks' are not-so-free, after all! YOU ADMIT AS MUCH!! There may be no charge on the beverages themselves, but between the cover charge (or is that only for Delarquans?), the overpriced meals, service charges for the staff to bring us our orders, and the 'mandatory gratuities for performers and staff,' no wonder you turn a profit! -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- *sigh* I see you need a translator for reverse communications, as well. That was, had I had one more win THAT TURN, I would have taken it from you. Nothing more. Nothing less. And as for my prediction? I was wr...wrr...wrrrr..., I was incorrect. *grumble* -- Lord Xiang Turquoise Tiger -- Add me to that list. Grrrr. -- Sun Tzu Violet Vulture -- And that would be cleaning up my mess? -- Napoleon PPE -- But of course! After all, would it be more enjoyable without ANY personals? -- Lord Xiang Seraphim -- Ahh! A REAL DRINK! I'm all over that! I believe there is the Black Dragon Tavern, and underground establishment. I could have the wrong city, but I don't believe so. As to how to keep 'em behaved? Simple. Remind them they fight with rubber-tipped weapons, but YOURS are still sharp and pointy! *evil grin* -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- So very true. One of the reasons why I enjoy such competition. Otherwise, I'd have to kill ya! *smile* -- Lord Xiang Kalidor the Bold -- Man, if you get booted from the Guard, you must REALLY stink! Let's try to get you up to snuff, so you can be eligible to fight in Andorak. *grin* -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- Sheesh! I sacrifice to the RUGs regularly, and I wind up with that atrocity! I feel we need to have a mass-sacrifice. An Animal sacrifice, no less! They can't refuse such an offering!! I know just the Farm! -- Lord Xiang Bodel/Honey -- Congratulations on your recent elevation to Lord Protector status! -- Lord Xiang Magenta Maggot -- My challenge. Your victory. Well fought. -- Napoleon Adrian Belew -- Um, if you enjoy pain that much, Madame Thumbscrews is available. She can be found at The Bulldog Inn waiting tables under the name of Lavender. -- Patton Violet Vulture -- You must be SUCH a disappointment to your fellow Aruaki. Mino (and his compatriot, Kennelworth) puts up this big ta-do to MY manager about Health. Humility. Honor. and then allows you to DOWNCHALLENGE ME!! Oh, sure, sure. You'll say it was ONLY THREE POINTS, so what's the big deal? HAH!! I can see what your manager would print if I had done only a three point downchallenge: The 'Larqs never change their spots! See! They can't win unless they downchallenge! Their way of dueling is unfair to those who enjoy the sport, taking advantage of the good will of those around them! Expecting them to live by any code that does not include cheating, murder, and deception is unreasonable! Well, now we know the TRUTH! -- Rommel Mino -- Tsk, tsk, tsk. Allowing Violet Vulture to actually submit a downchallenge on Rommel? A TV downchallenge, no less! I realize your team has come here from another city, but really! To take advantage of a foreigner, new to this city, in that way is nothing short of barbaric! Have I really threatened your status in this city so soon? Do I need elimination? You, sir (in conjunction with Kennelworth), extended an invitation for me to join you here in this fair city. Do you now, unilaterally, retract that invitation? Somehow, I doubt that Kennelworth was involved with this incident, but I fear once he is made aware of this, he may wish to cut ties with you, so deeply he honors what it means to be Andorian! -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- I hope, sir, you have been following the events transpiring in the arena. If not, I can provide you with transcripts and the written challenges. Are you going to continue associating with such a person? The downchallenge HAD to meet his approval to get to the Commission! I need to know who I should talk to in Aruak City to get his Charter revoked!! I have followed, NOT ONLY TO THE LETTER--BUT THE SPIRIT AS WELL, every bit of the code of conduct yourself and Tankesh had laid forth, only to be ABUSED in this manner! It would have been one thing had I come here prepared to battle as a Delarquan. It would have been expected. But to actually change my managerial style in order to prove a point, leaving my warriors exposed that way, and then stabbed in the back this way is unforgivable! -- Lord Xiang Seraphim -- Welcome back. I'm sure I'll see you plotting with Xiang in the future in some corner at the Bulldog Inn. I wouldn't worry about finding something that suits 'Larq style. Every city, in any land has its dregs. You'll even find such places in Aruak if you look hard enough. We try to clean up the trash, but there's always some. -- Tankesh P.S. You indicated we were in some form of negotiations years ago...you'll have to refresh my memory. Xiang -- Ok, I'll grant you they are being trained to fight Chaos creatures, in a war, should they invade. But there is an inherent difference between the tactics and style of fighting employed in mass combat, versus one on one combat. A true army would devastate an 'army' of your arena trained 'soldiers'. Lack of organization, lack of cavalry, lack of archers, chaos in the ranks, no solidarity or group tactics, not to mention foes on all sides in a melee. Don't try to tell me you're training purely soldiers. Like it or not, your guys learn to fight, our guys learn to fight, but the only difference is, our guys put on a better show because they think of themselves as more than just warriors or soldiers, they are gladiators! -- Tankesh P.S. I'd love for you to run anything I say through your 'translator'. Then I know what's really running through your 'devious' mind. PPE -- You know, if I could go out and recruit my own gladiators, I would. But the rule is you have to take whoever walks in your door. Trust me, I keep the good ones. If you'd walked in my door, I'd send you to the Dark Arena too, if just for your big mouth! -- Tankesh Congratulations to Bodel! Lord Protector! -- Tankesh Shinketh -- The Commission is wrong. It's not the first time. I just have not bothered to correct them yet. I am Convincian, if you must know. -- Kalidor Bull Horn -- I'd much prefer to do that to a purple freak. -- Jeb Domingo -- <pshhh, shaking her head in disgust.> -- Kiri Kyle -- I need to leave the arena and BRUSH UP! -- Traxius Beaver -- Skinned ya alive! -- Elinae Natas -- Hmm. I think I see.... Right! I've got it! You're a swimmer! -- Rockie Dee P.S. Either that, or you were just born. And you don't FIGHT like you were just born, so you must be a swimmer. One of those guys with, you know, a scandalous bit of a suit who hangs out down at the natatorium. (happy sigh) I could watch 'em for hours. Willie Dixon -- And all *I* got out of that was a headache. Darn. I might even go so far as to say...Drat! And you can add on any expletives that seem appropriate. I don't mind. -- Jo Mooncatcher Mr. B. -- Rats. I hate being matched with a dwarf. Sneaky little SHORT sons of boulders, that's what you are. Hairy, shifty-eyed, grasping, greedy, UNFRIENDLY types, you dwarves. Darn. -- Jon Fleet P.S. Actually, good work there. You had my number. P.P.S. Well, duh. Of course you had my number, or you wouldn't have been able to challenge me! Little Crow -- Oh, gods, now my teammates are going to make snarky remarks about how you got to "crow" over me. If you want to do it, fine, but I hate listening to my teammates when they start sniping. Bunch of, uh, maybe I'd better not say. -- Windchaser Nancy Wilson -- Where'd you learn to cut hair? You're so not-good at it. I said, "a little off the SIDES," and it felt like you were trying to take the top of my head off! Well, okay, maybe that's a SLIGHT exaggeration, but good gods, woman, I'm going to have to wear a hood until it grows back out! -- Koro Cloud Doggy Bag -- (faintly) Please do.... -- Koro Cloud Ed. -- Well, sort of, but not exactly. -- Rockie Dee P.S. But just think, if you were all ears, you could wear SO MANY pairs of earrings! Gazebo! But think of all the cotton swabs you'd go through. -- Ed. Rodel of Manic Marvels and Honey of Scarlet Knights -- I can't imagine how you came to slip past my Watchers-- No, I can imagine it. Probably the eggnog. Still, the lands situation hasn't changed, even if I did miss the notice of your graduation last time. Sorry about that, more or less. -- Shinketh, Arena Agent 30 December 2005 Just a reminder to all you online type people. It is much appreciated if you send your personals in PLAIN TEXT, rather than HTML or formatted text. HAL, in his infinite wisdom, doesn't DO formatting, which means having to unsnarl your personal ads from bunches of extraneous...stuff. So, if your e-mailer has a plain text option, let it be your friend. -- Ed. P.S. Sometimes it's the formatted text which makes ads go astray. Not often, but sometimes.
