They are: Doc Steele's lengthy dissertation and column A recent Animal Farm downchallenge The killing of Sun Tzu As a Consortium Elder, I have been given full authority to both speak and act in the whole organization's behalf. It was a pleasure to see Doc exhibit such an interest in Aruak City. It took time and great effort to respond in such a significant way to the inhabitants of The Heart & Soul Of Andoria. I wish to address several of the comments he made in a short and simple format: (1) Three years/ten years, both are marathons. (2) Doc proved in Talcama that "over the years" he could greatly improve the W/L, so there is no reason to not believe he could/would do it here in Aruak City. (3) He has his "head screwed on straight", for his daughter's education is far more important than his W/L record in Aruak City. (4) I am not the only one who has noticed and appreciates his willingness to attempt to live within the culture of Aruak City. (Not down challenging and "reducing" kill desires) (5) He is definitely acting as a different "person" than the one who first came to Aruak City. (6) Andorians DO tend to see "most avoided" as an honor which indicated that the avoided team is "most respected". (7) The Bulldogs, as well as Animal Farm and Colorific make no bones about avoiding. We do it with honor and we generally avoid those we respect. (8) Burst did "almost upset" the now dead Golden Aura, and the presumed "response" tactic was a well-managed challenge. Of course, that is what good managers do. Good luck to Burst "later on". (9) It is a pleasure to have Doc in this arena, not only because of the comments above, but because Consortiumites would rather compete with Doc (and win) than with any other Manager in the game. Without Doc's "emotional" entry to "invade" Aruak City, Consortium Teams would probably not be running anywhere in Alastari today. Enough of Doc! Mino, my good friend, your downchallenge entry for Violet Vulture against one of Lord Xiang's was completely unacceptable. Not only does this dishonor the culture of The Heart & Soul of Andoria, but it also disregards the Health-Humility-Honor Doctrine which encompasses The Consortium. You must not let it happen again. On Mino's behalf, he has apologized and he has recommitted to ensure no such actions in the future. He did indicate, and I believe him, that he truly had no intention of downchallenging, and that he either entered an incorrect number, or made the challenge in great haste. He does, however, accept full responsibilities for his actions. He has enlisted The Consortium representative at The Tempe Face to "make it up" to Lord Xiang. Lastly, let me speak of something that I hate to see happen, not just in Aruak City, but in any arena across the land--the death of a warrior. My own Bull Horn was matched against Sun Tzu, a fine Lord Xiang warrior, and the resultant was the death of the opponent in the first round. It is a Consortium (and Aruak City) tradition to apologize and honor the warrior. I do so. Animal Farm has done so in the personals. Interestingly, in this particular circumstance, Bull Horn was on an experimental strategy with 2 KD in the 1st and aiming at the right arm. It is possible (The actual fight has not yet been reviewed.) that Bull Horn did go desperate, and his KD in desperation was that same 2. It is most likely that Sun Tzu died in the "infamous low die roll" Aruak City infirmary. The moral of this story may be "avoid the infirmary" and the best way to do so is not to lose! Thank you for listening to my lengthy words. The Bulldog Inn will be open during The Face and all fights, all the way from The Tempe arena, will be communicated via Fandil The Wise's magic mirror. Come and watch. The ale will flow at no charge during this event. Kennelworth, Consortium Elder + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #7 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Murska and vicinity: "Lord Protector Huw, Children of Llyr," Huw snarled. He shouldn't have to be identifying himself at Murska arena, and it was wasting time. They didn't HAVE time. There were demons rampaging through the town! The door opened just far enough to show one eye. Washed out blue, with sandy lashes. Could be anybody, from what he could see. "Are they still out there?" "Who? Other gladiators trying to get in? Yes--" "The demons!" If the eye opened any wider, it would fall out of its socket. Huw took hold of his patience with both hands. He didn't have TIME for this. "Jamoak--it is you, isn't it?--there are demons out here, yes. Or one demon and several monsters. The arena structure is readily defensible--IF there are people to defend it. Let the gladiators IN." "But some of them might be--" "Demons in disguise? No. This demon isn't bothering with disguises. Let them IN, Jamoak." The maintenance man was still hesitating when Huw's teammate, Lady Protector Ma Gog, came up behind. She put one hand on the door and leaned. As Shews went, she was modestly sized, but she was solid. The door opened. A crowd of gladiators, Harkenes and Shews in the main, poured in. "No dwarves?" Jamoak asked. "They're all shut into the caves," someone said. "Fighting demons and monsters down there," someone else added. Jamoak turned pale. Paler than he had been, anyway. "Demons in the caves?" he squeaked. "Why not? This is happening all over," Huw said. "Picture it as a slanted line of demons from Kurukar down toward Riztab, maybe toward the Isle of the Eye. All through these hills. And not just on top of 'em." "You think we can defend the arena?" "You've got a chance, anyway." Huw, who was standing in the doorway, looked out over the town. Darkness and snow were coming down together, except where the fires had bloomed. He didn't know if those were accidental, or one side or the other had started them on purpose. He could hear occasional screams. See shapes moving against the flame-light, some of them monstrous and menacing. "But...aren't YOU staying?" "No. I was with a guy when the demon attacked. He got taken away. I have to go after him." "If the demon took him, he's dead, or as good as," one of the other gladiators muttered. "Why throw your own life away after his?" "He was a FRIEND, Llew. We were as good as partners. A man doesn't abandon a friend." Somewhere else: Tankesh's head ached, and his mouth tasted like the bottom of a birdcage, and he was mad enough to bite someone. This durance was about as vile as it could get. Cold, too. He groaned, rolled over, and sat up. Either this place was in complete darkness, or he had gone blind. He decided it was dark. He didn't want to think about the problems that could come with being blind. "Huw?" No answer except an echo. Well, maybe Huw hadn't been captured, or had been stashed in some other dungeon. Tankesh figured he had more immediate problems than "what happened to Huw?" Food, water, and avoiding hypothermia, for starters. Then, escape. Finding out what was going on with these demons, and stopping them, stopping whoever--the Black Kalive as the most likely culprit--was summoning them. But one thing at a time. A few sweeps of his hand determined that there was room to stand up and to move around here, wherever here was. The place smelled like cold stone and, faintly, mud. Water. The distant rushing sound which he had at first thought was his own blood rushing through his ears might not be. A cave with a stream in it, that was the ticket, and this might be one. He could hope so, because a cave might mean someplace he could get out of easily. Ah...relatively easily. At the least, it could mean "not a dungeon." He walked slowly, placing his feet with care, hands held out in front of him, feeling for a wall. It took, or seemed to take, a long time to find one, but he knew that time could be hard to judge with nothing else to measure it against. But the wall was there. Finally. He leaned on it and told himself that he was just...glad to have a wall to lean on. He hadn't really kissed it. It just came up faster than he'd expected. And it had been too long since he'd had down-time, rest and relaxation in unadventurous territory. He needed that. Everyone needed it sometimes. Blowing out his breath in a long sigh, the elf began to explore the wall with his hands. Stone, cold, barely damp. Rough, but he could feel what were almost surely tool marks. He wished briefly for his colleague, Kilim Altaraxe. The dwarf would be right at home here. Still, a worked cavern probably did mean dwarves, and he'd always gotten along well enough with the hairy little engineers. So...now that he had a wall, what happened next? He wasn't going to stand here and wait for some dwarf to come along and help him out. Tankesh flipped a coin mentally, then turned to the right and started walking, left hand brushing the wall, right hand on the hilt of his sword. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 265): INOCHI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) Well, didn't get my challenge but ended up getting my shot at the Duelmaster. Aruak City I, Big Lou, am your new Duelmaster. Onewolf, I did challenge you and would have been running just a tad bit slower but am pretty sure the end result would have been the same. I will do my best at defending the throne. So, warrior of Aruak, you come looking for me, you best have your game face on. Big Lou Duelmaster, DM 11 SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly ARUAK CITY games. Former top team MANIC MARVELS was unseated this week as BULLDOGS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-1-0 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon LETHAL HERITAGE this time out who this turn suffered a fall into 15th position in the wake of a 0-4-0 round. Did only my eyes note the 3-1-0 record which BULLDOGS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! STRATEGIC REPOSITION caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested BURN DA WITCH and was awarded 21 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, STRATEGIC REPOSITION put down BURN DA WITCH, causing her to lose 20 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as MOO MOO boldly challenged BIG LOU in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail MOO MOO, Duelmaster of ARUAK CITY! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out! But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city ARUAK CITY. ARUAK CITY, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is WOLFBROTHERS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. Apparently the stalwarts of BULLDOGS are catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. JO MOONCATCHER take warning! You have more than a few enemies in ARUAK CITY. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that THE SINGING BANDIT posted a challenge against the more highly recognized YELLOW STREAK. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand THE SINGING BANDIT bested YELLOW STREAK. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Wow! -- Moo Moo Rockie Dee -- I was sooooo lucky. With all that experience and skill you have, only luck was able to pull me through. I'll take luck over skill any day! -- Bucking Brahma, the bucking lucky bull Lethal Heritage -- I am sorry. I had no intention of killing Sun Tzu in that random match up. May he fight well in That Great Arena In The Sky. -- Bull Horn Lord Xiang -- You do our establishment disservice with your inaccurate words. Perhaps I should clarify. All free drinks are, indeed, free at the Bulldog Inn. (Seems like an unnecessary statement, doesn't it?) The reigning Duelmaster and all past Aruak City TC's drink free as much as they want at The Bulldog. (We have carried a few upstairs to the rooms for the night--also free--when they reached their "limit"--chuckle.) There are no cover charges to enter The Bulldog Inn, and one is welcome to visit with friends without any pressure of spending a cent. Those that really need it can often con the bartender, almost always a former warrior or manager of Aruak City, into a freebie anyway. It would be difficult to term our meals "overpriced" as they are some of the lowest in the city. Lastly, no gratuities for the "workers" reach the pockets of the owners or management. Gratuities are personalized and the property of the one who received them. Profit? Well, as my Accountant says, "Is that a business or a hobby?" I wonder what he means? -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Skirmish -- And you thought a maggot was just a significant little thing? Come to think of it, you are probably right! -- Magenta Maggot(who really, really wanted to be mahogany) Avast ye, Lord Xiang! This'n ole pirate done sends his'n blimey 'polergies. He do. Aye. -- Mino Patton -- I growled like a big mean cat, but you showed me who's boss. What can I do but say "well done" and "pshaw"! -- Turquoise Tiger Windchaser -- I hope I learned a LOT of skills along with that "clean up" win. That's what we vultures do, you know? -- Violet Vulture Lethal Heritage -- Smart avoid, pals. Smart avoid. -- The Critters of Animal Farm Lord Xiang -- I am sure my friend Mino is thrilled at your prediction that he will hit 1000 wins on turn 539. We do not believe that even he is capable of that. Our prediction is that he will continue to maintain at least W/L % and in doing so will attain 1000 on turn 545. We urge him to do it quicker, however! -- Kennelworth Doc Steele -- Nice DM column. I think your new policy of using avoids has already paid off; I tried to bloodfeud Jackhammer twice, and didn't get it either time! In the end I just like my bloodfeuds served--cold or otherwise--and not getting that one through was depressing. Especially that one, you, you...villain! -- Generalissimo Puerco Lord Xiang -- The way things are going, it'll likely be the spring tourney before I get to win #700! With the loss of Lorelei I'm in dire need of some enthusiasm for this team right now. -- Generalissimo Puerco Bull Horn -- Yep, I'd be havin' a pretty crappy streak these here days. Yep. -- Jeb Xiang -- Not only have the RUGS given me the cold shoulder on my last two replacements, the Commission (read RSI) has even failed to run one of the ones that was supposed to go to the DA, and now I have no new RU at all! -- Tankesh Xiang -- You are one warped individual to think that "I" am not up to snuff, as you say. -- Kalidor the Bold Napoleon -- That was your Waterloo I suppose. Pretty bad choice to challenge me.... -- Elinae Oh the shame, beat by a captured Orc! I beat on that guy, and he actually took it! Tough little bugger. -- Jeb Bleeder -- Excellent bout. -- Kiri (not very social) Doc Steele -- You may remember me from our personal correspondence some time ago. Let me just note that Tankesh is my alter ego, as you could say. The teams are mine, he manages for me. Ego is putting it lightly when it comes to him. I don't want to give you the wrong impression by letting him answer, he'd probably just try to zing you again. But I would like to say on behalf of my Tuft Tuggers, that we are very happy to hear of your new overall arena strategy shift for Aruak City. Although I am sure Tankesh will still zing you here and there, I can guarantee that I am quite content and you will find us with no hatchet to speak of. You've gone more than halfway, and though you're still not anti-death, you are minimizing it in your own way for your style, and you are not down-challenging. It is a big change for you. We were mighty impressed with what you had to say in the Duelmaster's column and I have great respect for you and the course you have taken. No doubt you will always be a great rival and nemesis for our team, but it is now more than ever one of competitiveness rather than cultural warfare. I am glad you are enjoying Aruak, and I'm sure Tankesh will be glad to have you for a foe. I'll tell him to avoid any future insults, but you may still get some zingers from him. He's not always a good sport, but I am. Thank you for adding to this great city. -- Adeolar "Blackwood" Marianka (a.k.a. Adie), Manager of Tuft Tuggers. For Tankesh, day to day Manager of Tuft Tuggers Doc Steele -- What she said.... And I'll avoid the zingers since it's not your style and the Gods know it's not so hard to zing me. Good luck out there. See you on the sands. -- Tankesh Doc -- Thanks for the welcome back, it's cool that a top notch manager recognizes a manager such as myself. -- Barnabas Kennelworth -- Glad to be back old buddy, feels good to be back on the sands in Aruak. Won't be a full crew but I'll try and stay active. -- Barnabas Lord Xiang -- My apologies for not responding sooner to your welcome, been kinda battling flood conditions out here and was out of electricity for a few days. Things under control now so away we go! Haven't had a problem with a Delarquan that I can think of in quite some time so see ya on the sands. -- Barnabas Tankesh -- For what I was I kicked some butt, just had the knack and decise. >) Bodel Jon Fleet -- I thought my hair was trimmed rather nicely, perhaps the sand in your face blurred your vision. -- Mr. B. Shinketh, Arena Agent -- It's Bodel pal, not Rodel as posted in last turn. -- Bodel with a B Rommel -- You dropped rather suddenly. -- Domingo OneWolf -- Well my friend, I beat you this time around. Your record shows you are a true warrior, perhaps we'll meet again sometime. -- Big Lou All -- Don't normally like to get involved but do have a little something to say. There is no way we will all ever get along, there are good guys and bad guys, that's what it's all about. We have a common bond in this game, face it we're all addicts. We are brothers in this game whether we like it or not. We are competitors at its finest and that's what drives us in this game. I've gotten pissed at people (big mistake on my part)--get pissed at the manager not the person, that's the key! See ya around. -- Barnabas Doc Steele -- I thank you for the welcome to this fine city! It warms the heart to hear from another of our homeland. Yes, I am a Delarquan, of the Mordanti Federation, from Mordant City itself. This is where we have most likely crossed paths before. We share a few fine things in common, it seems, in our approach to playstyles. At least in this city. Your approach, in Andorian cities at least, springs from your experience and respect of your opponents in their own region. My first city was Andorian, Lyratilan, and I also played heavily in the Lirith Kai regions when they first appeared (there is something to be said about having that 2-digit ID Lord Protector :D). My play style has been greatly influenced by those experiences. I will challenge upwards, except in Bloodfeud or in reply to such treatment by another. In those circumstances, all bets are off. I do use my avoids when challenging, for the sole basis that it improves the odds of my challenges getting through. I always look at being Most Avoided as being accorded a large measure of respect. After all, if you weren't wary of my warriors, you would not avoid. As far as kill strats are concerned, I have toned down my normal strats here in Aruak City for the duration, also. There are many different ways to skin an Andorian, and I seem to be doing well (with the exception of Consortium stables), even accommodating myself to the local atmosphere. This is my normal play style, with the exception of the lethal strats being bumped up, for all my other arenas. I am a vocal manager, loving to bark, and have a fair bite. *grin* I play mostly in the Basic Arenas for the flavor. That and the fact that the risk of death is always there, appealing to the Delarquan in me. Be well, and Sword High! -- Lord Xiang Violet Vulture -- Um, Lord Xiang is our manager, as proven by the fact that he just ripped us all new ones in our team meeting. He even handed Napoleon a TORCH, fer cryin' out loud! -- Rommel Turquoise Tiger -- Bit the dust, indeed! No thanks, and all the credit to Bull Horn. -- Ghost of Sun Tzu Mino -- Oh, I'd say your critters are about to be crit. *evil grin* -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- I PROTEST!!! When are you going to expulse Mino from your ranks?!? He blocked the infirmary door for 45 minutes, preventing the healers from getting to Sun Tzu while he bled out and died!! Even Bull Horn was there, trying to help the doctors get in to see him! What you SHOULD do, if not get rid of him, is to take his team under your management, and send Mino to Mordant to recruit a new team there, where his bloodthirsty style will not be out of place. His antics are just ruining the reputation that The Consortium has built over the years. Good lord, my friend, I hope you are not blind to what this maniac is doing! -- Lord Xiang PPE -- Please try and talk to Kennelworth about this Mino situation. It is getting out of hand! -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- Status? My status is GREAT! Until you figure in my record versus Consortium stables, that is. *grumble* -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- Ya-ya-ya. Okay, they are gladiators, putting on a show. Should my warriors get sponsors now? Some footwear manufacturer can tattoo their logo on my warriors back? Paint a healer's address on my warriors' shields? What about painting their face on my warriors' shaved heads? All for the gold piece? -- Lord Xiang (hoping there is no war nearby anytime soon) Turquoise Tiger -- Ah, a win! I feel special, considering you're a Consortium warrior! -- Patton Domingo -- I must say, you could work for Manager! -- Rommel Elinae Silverbow -- Well, Lord Xiang's giving me the boot after my last performance with you. Take care, and you'll probably see me washing dishes at the Bull Dog Inn under an assumed name. -- Napoleon Kennelworth -- Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here; in Health and Honor anyway. -- Seraphim Doc Steele -- Your post was riveting. The leadership among the Delarquan community is not what it once was, but I count myself lucky as a young Delarquan manager that there are guildmasters like you to aspire to. You should know that while I am a 'larq in an Andorian city it does not mean I have changed my principles. Like you I find the use of avoids a less than desirable style of play and don't use them myself, and while I'm not here to specifically MAKE enemies, I certainly won't run if they present themselves. I apologize to you publicly that affairs on another continent took me away two years ago. If I could have stayed at your back I would have. You have my respect. -- Seraphim Aruak -- Are the conscripts you offer in this city the same all over Andoria? I have yet to see more than one warrior I would count worthy of running in any of my Delarquan stables, yet they seem to be the same quality no matter how many I request. Either these losers are bred here or you are importing them in an attempt to make living here undesirable. Despite the fact I can't make a full stable with these sorry excuses for warriors and the team's record is suffering from both the losses they incur and the continuous usage of the Dark Arena I will continue trying. Perhaps I can bribe some of the city officials into allowing me to call in some Delarquan conscripts. With all the rules around here, I doubt it; but it's worth a try. -- Seraphim P.S I have ever been against the wanton use of dimwitted scum, I may have to revise that precept here. If for no other reason than to keep the dark arena fiends from getting fat. Violet Vulture -- (panting) So that's how you do it, eh? You hover around, waiting for dinner to collapse in front of you? Seems appropriate, I guess. But I'd think a zaftig lady like you, really, you orcs are so IMPRESSIVE that way, would be inclined to a more active encounter. For instance, dinner and dancing? Or, of course, dancing first and then dinner. I'm easy on that. -- Windchaser P.S. As long as you don't see ME as dinner. Sandman -- You carry them? Or someone carries you? Why? It seems like such a waste of energy. Of course, I suppose golems have energy to spare--just add more batteries--but the concept remains the same. -- Koro Cloud P.S. Of course, the ORDERLIES carried me. To the Infirmary! Bucking Brahma -- Well, what *I* think is that a dog should come out and bark at you! You're a Bad Boy. You don't know how to PLAY. -- Rockie Dee Yellow Streak -- It was gold for me, and I appreciated it. The only win on the team! Leeta's used to us having that kind of turns, I don't think she even notices. But *I* notice. You think I liked having that pathetic record? Not much! And it's still pathetic, but not quite as bad. -- Jo Mooncatcher, celebrating while he can Mr. B. -- Gosh, who was that masked man? -- Jon Fleet P.S. Couldn't resist. Doc Steele -- An impressive column! I look for lots of discussion from that. -- Leeta, not feeling discussive at the moment, and really, what could I say? Kalidor -- Convincian, eh? I'll make a note of it. -- Shinketh Lord, or as the case might be Lady, Protector Requiem -- How about a nice cemetery plot? I know you won't die permanently, because of going to the Isle, but it's always good to have a plot in the background, just in case. -- Shinketh, Arena Agent P.S. You could always use it to bury enemies. Adie/Tankesh, Generalissimo, JRK -- Sorry not to have gotten more done this time, I had the BEST resolutions. But the power went off. Probably because of the electrician rewiring the house, but still, off is off. -- the Scribe P.S. And, to be honest, because of the tourney and trying to get things out early Friday morning. 30 December 2005 Just a reminder to all you online type people.
