Adie shouted. The blades of light knifing through the door were sun-bright and sun-golden, but there was a wrongness that made her skin prickle and her teeth ache. She didn't know how someone could pervert sunlight, but that had been done here, and there was no greater natural power. The sun had set, which meant there was no ready source of clean energy for her to oppose to this. She wove a shield from the sunlight stored in her staff, but it wouldn't cover enough area to protect everyone in the compound. There was a confused sound behind her, voices and movement, but she dared not turn to look, dared not take her attention and focus off the disaster that loomed before them. A hand on her arm, Fandil's voice coming from a great distance. "Let go, Adie! You can't hold it back any longer, and the effort will kill you--" "All the people--" she gasped. "They're out. They're as safe as they can be. Let go, Adie." "I can't--" The corrupted light was fighting her, and if she just let go... none of them would get away, no one within ten yards would be safe. She felt Fandil bracing her mind and spirit, warm as a fire at her back. Cho was doing something, too, but she couldn't tell what. The pressure of the explosion she was suppressing lessened. She released the outer edges of her counter-spell. No disaster so far. Fandil's arm around her, pulling her back and away from the danger zone. Other power flowing around her, taking over the task she had begun. She relaxed a little more and allowed Fandil to pull her out of the danger zone. Out of the worst danger, anyway. They passed Cho, who was standing like a rock and glowing electric blue. "Everyone is out." That was Katuchim. "The Night Patrol will come down on us, but that is a minor problem compared to..." he gestured toward the flame that was leaping into the sky as Cho followed the channels she had set to bleed off the power. "I do not understand how Oruman could do this to us! A little shady dealing in business, of course, but this! I would have said he has neither the skill nor the malice." "He may not have realized what kind of trap he was leaving behind," Fandil said. His voice was hard. His face was hard. Even his beard was like iron, so great was his wrath. "Someone probably told him it would simply prevent you from following him." Adie saw that Cho was about to release the last binding and allow the explosion to complete itself and shut her eyes against the blaze that would follow. "It will not prevent US from following," she said. Despite the power she and then Cho had bled off, there was a bellow of thunder and earthquake, a brightness like the heart of a sun, as the trap closed and burst with trapped power. The defensive spells they had placed around it channeled most of the explosion upward. Fiery wind roared into the sky. Air was being sucked into it, and they had to fight against the pressure of the wind to escape. Adie saw pieces of wood, shingles, a barrel that burst in flight, all kinds of debris being sucked into the firespout. Birds. Whole trees. They stumbled into the street and the crowd. Even here, even at night, a crowd would form to watch such a disaster. Very human. Encouraging, actually; Adie had been concerned that these shape-shifters were so different that they were not.... Well, they were, and she was glad of it. Of course, she scanned the crowd by the light of the fire, most of them looked like foreigners, like Katuchim, or Cho. Two men with very dark skin and uniforms of red and gold were moving through the crowd, encouraging people to leave. One of them stopped to talk to Katuchim, who answered with much gesturing. "The City Guards," Cho murmured beside her. "Chosen because there are no dark- skinned shape-shifters and these men are therefore unmistakable in their roles. The fire is under as much control as possible, and there is little else we could do here that would be of use to anyone." "But we have a line, of a sort, on the gate through which this Oruman left," Fandil said. "Cho thinks it would be possible to run another link parallel to it and come out somewhere near the b...," the old man coughed suddenly, "somewhere near the boob." "Oruman has put himself wrong with the Law by this action," Katuchim said, coming up to them with a Guardsman in tow. "Not only here--messages will fly around the Middle Sea and he will be in trouble anywhere except, perhaps, his home city." The merchant stared at his burning buildings, frowning. "But I do not understand WHY he did this! There has been friction, yes, but we have managed to get along anyway, and it has been a good business!" "We'll ask him when we catch up with him," Fandil said. His voice was grim as he added, "And we will catch up." "Do you think it was your presence that drove him to this?" the Guardsman asked. "No." Adie had been thinking about that, and she was sure of her answer. "We may have been the trigger for him doing it right NOW, but this was not something prepared on the spur of a moment. Even if Oruman had been a mage himself, which I am told he was not, he would have taken days, maybe weeks, to set this up." "A plot?" Katuchim shrieked. "NO! This son of a diseased worm has entered into a PLOT against me? I will not have it! He and all his kin shall suffer for this! He will go, soon or late, to his own clan and House, and I will HAVE him there! I and mine will--" Adie put a hand on the merchant's arm. "Katuchim, this is not necessary. We three will follow up Oruman and see that he is dealt with...suitably." She had her notions of what was a "suitable" fate for someone who would endanger all the uninvolved people who would have perished in that fire had she and her friends not been there to give warning and contain it." "The poisonous worm will have others of the kind who could do this, wherever he has gone," Katuchim growled. "You do not need to rush into that danger for the honor of my House!" But he looked uneasy as he said it, and Adie could tell that he wanted them elsewhere. That he found them...alarming. "We will do it, because we are the right people to do it," Fandil said. "It is a job that calls for the skills we have, and if he wasn't planning it for us, we still may have set him off." The old mage shrugged. "And it seems like the most useful thing we can do at this moment." Before Katuchim could respond, the Guardsman said, "I would be glad of that, for one. I do not hold you to blame here, but...." It was his turn to shrug. "But if we're going to attract or trigger trouble," Cho said, "you'd rather we did it elsewhere." "Well...yes." "Entirely reasonable, and what I would want in your place," the old Adantri said. He turned to his two companions. "The sooner we follow the trail of this gate, the easier it will be to do so." "Yes." Fandil bowed slightly to the Guard and Katuchim and drew his two companions a little away. "I have an idea how to structure a pursuing gate," he said, "if it is consistent with the rules of this universe." He outlined his plan quickly. "It should work," Cho said. "I can--" "No, Adie and I will do the 'heavy lifting' in this," Fandil said. "And you will stand ready with a drawn sword." "What?" Adie straightened. "You EXPECT--?" "This Oruman and whoever is backing him magically are hostile," Fandil said. "And having an Adantri with a sword in his hand when there may be trouble is never a BAD plan, you know." Cho snorted but nodded agreement and drew his sword, which glimmered blue-white with more than moonlight. Adie and Fandil focused their attention on the spell Fandil had devised. And the magic took them away. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #9 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Somewhere Else: Come to think of it, why did he still have his sword? In his experience, which had been extensive, the first thing enemies did when they caught you was take away your weapons. And while his memory of the recent past was a little blurred (damn being hit on the head, it always made problems, not least of which was that right now his head ached ferociously), he did remember very distinctly that some enemy had been involved in his arrival here. Or somewhere that led to here. Just to be on the safe side, he pulled it out of its scabbard to make sure the hilt had a blade attached. Some villains would think it funny to let him assume he had a sword when he didn't. No, it was there. He ran his fingers along the flat of the blade, savoring the smooth, cold steel. If he found something to fight, he could fight it. He hoped he WOULD find someone to fight. He wanted to hit someone. Or choke someone. He flexed his fingers. They were stiff. That would be the cold, he supposed. Faint reddish light rippled across his vision. He had encountered the effects of darkness on sight before now, and knew it was an illusion of some kind. A trick his understimulated eyes were playing on him. He blinked, hoping to clear them, in case something real came along. The light remained. He blinked again. Maybe it was real. He took three eager steps, almost running, and paused. Even if it was real, it could be a trap or just plain dangerous. It took all his willpower, but he slowed his advance. Reddish light, and a faint vibration in the air that would be sound when he got closer. Or maybe this was too low-pitched for his ears. That didn't matter. What was causing it didn't matter, friend or foe, mechanism, or force of nature. It meant he was getting somewhere. And about time! Tankesh hurried onward. Not running, but he hurried. The vibration became sound. Too confused to interpret. Screams, roars, mechanical sounds. Stones hitting other stones. His mind, which seemed to have been wandering in limbo for years, pulled itself together, shook out a few last wrinkles, and began to take in details. There was fire up ahead, and a battle. Sounded like dwarves and some kind of beast or demon, or perhaps a demonic beast. A monster, anyway. Something that had to be destroyed, and he could help. He drew his sword. The tunnel he was in came to an end in the wall of a large cavern, about ten feet off the floor. A river rushed across the center of the floor, with a waterwheel turning in it, and several bridges crossed the stream. Which was now running red with blood as some of the dwarves below were thrown against the wheel, gathered up by the paddles, and forced down under the water and into some hidden mechanism. The demonic beast was between him and the wheel, and it was that monster which was throwing the dwarves to their destruction. It was hard to see the thing clearly. There was haze in the cavern, but that wasn't the real problem. His eyes and his mind rejected the shape of the creature. They insisted that what he was seeing was not real, could not be real. Nothing could be shaped like that. It was not an experience he'd encountered often, but he knew what it meant. This...thing was distorting space-time around itself, was only partly in this world. It might be possible to damage it, maybe even enough to make it withdraw, but it couldn't be destroyed here. Too bad. He felt like destroying something. He squinted at the creature, trying to make out some useful detail. It was wrapped, or embedded, in red light that pulsed and flickered and throbbed, suggesting flame. And heat seemed to be coming from it. What would happen if the part of it in this world, in this cave, was forced into the stream? It would probably explode. An explosion confined to this cave, which was big but not THAT big, could be hazardous. Did he care? Well...yeah. And so would the dwarves trying to fight the thing down there. Still, he couldn't just ignore the situation. Okay. First point, he was too far away to do anything. No easy way down from this ledge that he could see, and it was only ten feet...he could jump that. Tankesh sheathed his sword and jumped, landing cat-like on all fours, then springing up. It was HOT down here near the monster. A quick glance showed that there were no dwarves left alive on this side of the stream. A dwarf on the other side was waving sword and shield, probably trying to get his attention. He moved sideways as far from the monster as he could get and waved back. No telling what he wanted. The dwarf turned a side toward him and moved along the river to face him. Ah... what SHE wanted, then. That was definitely a breast plate. Even at the far end of the cave, there was thirty or forty feet of underground river between them, and the noise level was high. She seemed to be saying... "Force the monster into the wheel." Meaning into the river, too. "It'll explode!" he yelled back. "Into the WHEEL, not the river!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 266): TOM SAWYER of SMITHSONIAN (The Curator, mgr.) Thinking about sending their team manager to the Dark Arena is MANIC MARVELS, after suffering a 13 drop in ranking. What's a move up by 6 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to GERFEL'S FRIENDS. Good things come to those who fight well, as LETHAL HERITAGE can attest, moving up by 4. Practice pays for HURT, who pummelled EMBEZZLING SCRIBE, to pocket 21 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, BOOTSTRAP RIBEYE was winsome, after beating BUCKING BRAHMA and seeing him lose 10 points. Well, Duelmaster ONEWOLF challenged SCARLET KNIGHTS' GLADIUS STARSTRYKE. Is a 19-2-0 good enough? ONEWOLF successfully staved off a grab for the roses by GLADIUS STARSTRYKE of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Does ARUAK CITY have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in ARUAK CITY is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works. My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so did the "warriors" in ARUAK CITY avoid NEVERWAKE. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of TUFT TUGGERS, so did that sorry team shy from NEVERWAKE Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and JON FLEET is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't KRILL CAVALRY proud! DAMNUALL found himself challenged by a warrior 21 below: MAGENTA MAGGOT. MAGENTA MAGGOT of ANIMAL FARM kept hers wits as she was defeated by DAMNUALL. Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! Justice was served as GHENGIS fought BULL HORN in bloodfeud. Well done, LETHAL HERITAGE! Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Leave me now, you base fools! 'Bout all I can say is good luck, amigo, we all give it our best shot. -- Barnabas Treestump -- Must be kinda hard stuck in the ground and all. Was actually really easy walking around to the side where you couldn't see and letting you have it. -- Mr. B. Booteye Ribstrap -- Man I'm still a little delirious; is that your name. -- Lord B. Flying Nun -- That ain't fair you flying around, couldn't see ya when you were up there with this damn armor on. -- Domingo Black Plague -- Well this time the old epee seemed to do the trick. >) Sorry Mister, but I was taught to kick a guy when he is down. -- Big Lou Kennelsortium -- Well old buddy, we seem to be havin' some fun. Let the good times roll. -- Barnabas JGW -- Oh joy, a pig-headed 'Larq just came to town! I suppose I should reply to your diatribe with one of my own. Where's that translator box Xiang always uses...? Oh well, I guess I'll just make a few counter-points. 1) Pride in Mordant? That's a joke! Backwards, segregated, discriminatory, crime infested, bloody, culture lacking, swamp! Talk about a dump! Come off it.... 2) "I will fail to live up to such a code..." Of course you will, because you have no respect for Aruak City and its culture. Ever hear the term 'When in Aruak, do as the Aruaki'? If I was in, gods forbid, Mordant, I'd respect your local culture despite how grotesque it is. Because in all things, showing respect is a measure of your honor. If you can't respect a culture or a person for who they are, and vice versa, you have no honor, regardless whether you are at odds with such a person or culture. I guess what I'm trying to say is...you're honorless. Your 'Larq brethren who are already here have loads of it, learn from them! 3) The 'Larqs already in town are good enough managers, I don't think they need your aid. 4) When you duel, accidents and death may happen. Period. You can swallow your blunted words about Andorian hypocrisy and choke on them. 5) Last, if you're so keen to try to shoot down the 'Health, Humility, Honor' motto, I suppose you're all about 'Death, Arrogance, and Dishonor'. Well, that makes it easy to know how to treat you on or off the sands. Good luck in Aruak, you'll need it. -- Tankesh, Mgr. Tuft Tuggers Scribe -- Great columns! Thanks. -- Tankesh, wanting more... Domingo -- Nobody likes being on the receiving end of a spell-archer. I'm just brushing up on my melee skills. -- Elinae Lord Xiang -- I feel you've earned the 'Lord' bit by now because, one, your record is trashed and bringing it back up now or later deserves a measure of respect <wink>, and two, you and I are both lords of the DA right now. I need a dinosaur to sacrifice to the RUGs.... -- Tankesh Lord Xiang -- Let me see if I can dig up a challenge one of these days to your warriors in the Guard.... -- Kalidor Damnuall -- I would'na be s'prised if you have as much experience as I, and likely more skill! Size does have it's disadvantages, but dang I thought I had you. Great fight! -- Jeb Blue Eyes -- <snicker> -- Elinae Koro Cloud -- Practicing with new weapons.... -- Kiri Tangerine toad -- No fair, funky colored amphibians made me think I was have some really bad flashbacks...an unfair advantage. Looks like I'll have to do some... -- Strategic Repositioning -----?----- -- Is that a name or a state of permanent confusion? Anyway, you're dead now so it should be all right. Seraphim said I'm in Andoria so I should apologize; so yeah, whatever. I think everyone should know that even a small skirmish can be deadly. -- Skirmish RUGS -- Ok enough. I have suffered enough with your horseplay. I freely now offer you Mino's soul to satiate your demonic sense of humor. I'm not sure if he has one, or even if it's still any good but if you can find it it's yours. -- Seraphim Tankesh -- Heh, no idea where the recruits are coming from, all I know is they suck and I am having a hard time killing them off as fast as I am getting them. -- Seraphim Calfskin -- I don't suppose ANYBODY expects me to defeat a Lady Protector. And I didn't, but there's nothing wrong with that. Of course...nobody expects me to defeat Leeta, either, if she goes postal over me losing another fight. (sigh) There are times when I wonder why I ever thought this was a good kind of job. -- Jo Mooncatcher Bionic Buffalo -- I have to, you know, ask. What parts are bionic? Your tail? Your horns? Your hump? Or, you know, what? -- Rockie Dee Kiri Dragonspear -- Well, if I was a dragon, I wouldn't want a mean lady like you around! Zounds! -- Koro Cloud Gladius Starstryke -- You'd look better in a vase, I think. -- Jon Fleet P.S. Lots better. P.P.S. What have you got against the stars? Fine things, stars. Bright. Twinkly. Burst -- And that wraps up an oh-fer turn, and at least everybody ELSE on this rotten team lost, too! Oh, well. I'll buy you drink if you don't mind being seen with a loser. -- Windchaser, a better horseman than gladiator (which wouldn't be hard) Tankesh -- Glad you see it that way, but I have to say that trying to keep it in step with a different storyline running in a different region is trickier than I thought it'd be. -- the Scribe Halo of Neverwake -- I don't seem to have a note here as to whether you're a lord or a lady, but you're clearly a winner. Congratulations. -- Shinketh, arena agent Bull Horn -- Perhaps it was a good fight for you. So I did not win. My master is becoming accustomed to that from your stable, and those associated with your stable. -- Rommel Kennelworth -- It was a pleasant experience meeting you in Tempe as well. Your insights have proved, um, provocative of thought. -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- Why don't you request your brother's presence. I would be more than happy to pay for his expenses for his services. -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- Oiy! That was in jest! If you actually do such silly marketing techniques, then this is a game, after all. I give up!! -- Lord Xiang Jeb -- Easy win? Phah! I'm not easy, I'm just cheap!! -- Patton Captured Orc -- Bah! All these warriors in the arena and I get YOU? -- Patton Burn Da Witch -- Not bad. Hopefully I can continue to win in that fashion. *grin* -- Rommel Bull Horn -- Hey! I can keep trading losses for learns like THOSE!! -- Ghengis Chopstick Surgeon -- I meant to do that! Eh-Eh!! -- Pee-Wee Herman 30 January 2006 We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to announce with glad hearts that Heathen Hatebred is no longer just a friend, but also an alliance-mate.
