Or maybe two wild horses yoked together, she thought, wrestling with one as Fandil struggled with the other. The two halves of the spell had to work together, and they didn't want to. She snorted to herself as she curbed the undisciplined energy yet again. "Want to," what nonsense! A spell was not a living creature with desires and volition of its own. At least, she had never encountered a world where that was the case. But she didn't know this world, and she had already learned that it was different in weird ways to any of her previous acquaintance. The passage through this gate was unlike her experience with any other, also, but that was to be expected. The space between Gates, if it could be called a "space," was the realm of Chaos, never the same. Cold that burned, whirling daggers of frozen flame, scent of roses and rotten meat. There was no up and down, or twenty different orientations. Who could tell? It occurred to her that all Lord Protectors should experience this. It was what Lady Sheila had created the system for, after all: to train warriors to fight within the Gates to protect Alastari from creatures of other worlds before they could emerge. The third part of the unit of which she and Fandil were the first two stirred suddenly, in a movement that was red, with bitter veins. Could there be life, hostile life, within the realm of Chaos? She had never before been aware of a Gate passage taking so long. Was there...? No! There was NOTHING wrong with the spell she and Fandil were using. It was good, it was appropriate, it would work. They were just meeting resistance, though whether from the medium or someone at the other end, she could not tell. Not that it mattered. They could and would do this. The fabric of not-time-not-space rippled around them, shimmered with an iodine scent appropriate to a seashore, then steadied with a brazen clang. They were in a room, stone walls, silt over a stone floor, part of the roof gone. The feel of the Arcanum told all three instantly that they had returned to Ghea. Fandil looked around, eyes narrowed, and nodded once. "Krael." Adie turned to stare at the old man. "You're sure? Stupid question, of course you're sure." She looked around the room again. At one corner there was an opening, not a door, just fallen rocks, into another space. "Do you see any sign of that Oruman we followed here?" "He might not have come here," Cho said. "It was...at least half an hour after he left that we began our passage. The power balances might have shifted enough to change the destination." Fandil raised an eyebrow. "Do you think that likely?" The Adantri's mouth curved into a faint smile. "No. I think Oruman is here. But he may be dead already. The people currently in Krael are not likely to feel a need for courtesy to travelers." Adie straightened sharply. "You're right. And that includes us." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #12 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Somewhere Else: Force the monster into the wheel? Tankesh looked at the waterwheel dubiously. It was bigger than the monster, true, half again as tall, but it looked spindly. It would break. Dwarves were supposed to be smart, didn't they realize that when the red-hot monster hit the wheel and the cold underground river, there would be an explosion? Steam would fill the cave, at the least, and ballistic bits of wheel, too, probably. Deadly. These dwarves might be willing to throw their lives away to save their compatriots...which wasn't a bad reason, now that he thought about it. And he had the Greywand's promise of resurrection, but he didn't want to die. Very unpleasant, dying and being resurrected. And the fact that he was even thinking that, when his duty was clear before him, was a sign that he'd been on the road too long. He needed time back in Aruak City to relax and unwind, with nothing more to worry about than whether to order a red wine or a white one. Well, tomorrow for that. For now, a monster to kill. "Force it into the wheel," the dwarf had said. There was nothing alive on this side of the cave except the monster and himself, so the job would be all his. He balanced on the balls of his feet, sword in hand, watching the monster move. It was shifting back and forth, glaring at the dwarves across the river, growling and sometimes roaring. Afraid of the water, he realized. That would make it harder to force the thing toward the river and the wheel. But if-- Aha! It stepped on patch of mud and loose pebbles, skidding slightly, and off balance. He lunged at it with a yell, which brought its head around toward him. Gods! What an ugly thing, not even a mother could love that face. The universe would be better off without that face in it. Naturally, the monster did not agree, and it spread its arms wide, bellowing. And skidded again, again only slightly, but enough to make a difference. His lunge at its chest was a feint, not that he was sure the monster could recognize it as such, and at the last moment he shifted his line and hamstrung it. Dark fluid spurted out of the wound, and it bellowed again, thrashed its arms around (he barely avoided being knocked across the cavern by one fist), staggered, and half-fell backward. Into the wheel. There was a flash of light and a complete absence of sound, even the roar of the water thrashing through the wheel going silent. The monster's mouth gaped open, but if it screamed, there was no sound that reached Tankesh. It was a dream-like moment, he seemed suspended in time and space, the monster suspended likewise, and the wheel turning between them. Between? But the monster was still on this side of the river, he could see that. The dwarves on the other side were all running flat out for the tunnels he could see in the far wall. Amazing how much he could see from here. Must be some kind of spell. He'd have to ask Adie about it when he saw her next. Then the wheel spun, strobed, and the suspended moment ended as he crashed into the wall behind him. In the last instant before darkness replaced light, he saw that the monster was simply...not there. Murska: The fires had looked bad from ground level. From the roof of an apothecary's shop, Huw decided that things looked much worse. He was closer to the fires, for one thing, as the shop was farther down the street than his earlier vantage. Bigger, hotter, closer fires. Huw didn't think he was a coward, but he didn't think he was a fool, either, and he began to suspect that this skinny little man who was leading him across the roofs was a raving idiot. If the man was afraid of monsters, clearly heights had no terrors for him, and he leaped from roof-beam to gable, shingles to tiles to slippery slates, with a heedless abandon that made cold sweat run down the gladiator's back. But the roofs did provide a temporarily clear pathway through the fiery regions. The key word being "temporary." Huw hoped the little mage knew where they were going, because he was lost. From up here, and with the fires, the familiar streets were different. Strange. Streets in hell. A building on the other side of the street they were following suddenly exploded into flame. Burning debris pinwheeled into the air. Huw ducked behind a chimney stack as fiery chunks of...something rained down onto his roof. Followed by Tankesh, battered and only half conscious, landing with a thump and a grunt and starting to slide down the slates toward the eaves and the street. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #13 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Near Zensu: Crystal's blade made a clean strike, killing the lizard man instantly. She shifted her attention to the next in line, marginally aware that Raoul was being just as effective at the other end. Warned by his companion's demise, the second lizard managed to parry her first blow. His movements were slow, though his body language projected desperation. She hesitated a moment, contemplating asking him to surrender. That was a mistake. Slow with cold he might be, but the lizard was no coward and no fool. He threw himself toward her right, and the one behind him came toward her left; they would box her between them if they could. If the lizards had been able to move faster, the tactic might have worked. But they could not move faster, and Crystal Fireblade had been a warrior all her adult life, trained in a hard school. She feinted, gliding farther to her right to draw the lizard man that way, waited until his slow reactions had turned him. Then a shift to the left, drawing her blade across him in a disemboweling slash. Farther left, hamstringing the second lizard man just as Raoul beheaded it from behind. The two gladiators faced each other over the body of their last opponent. "These can't have been all that was following us, doll," Raoul said. He picked up a handful of leaves from the forest floor and began to wipe his blade. "They were brave enough, and in the summer they'd probably have been a serious threat, but... here and now?" He shook his head. "I bet they didn't come after us on their own, either. Someone stirred 'em up and threw them at us." Crystal nodded. That was her thought, too. These lizards had no reason that she could imagine to be here at all, much less to have tracked them and attacked them. They were just tools, and the wrong tools for the job. "They were looking behind themselves," she recalled, "as though whoever was driving them wasn't far back." Raoul nodded. "You said it, doll. Killing these lizards was necessary. Getting my hands on the man who put them here will be a pleasure." "He--whoever--might be close behind." "True." Without further consultation, they separated again and faded into what cover there was, crossing the shallow stream and drifting silently along the backtrail. A human male was walking along the trail left by the lizards, poking at the dead leaves with a carved staff and muttering under his breath. He seemed young, in his twenties, maybe, and he was weedy and unappealing, with a weak chin and close-set eyes. If he weren't a mage, he would be negligible, but that was a magician's staff he was carrying, and those were definitely mystic symbols embroidered on his robe. A mage, but also a fool who had to advertise lest someone overlook him. It was easy to assume that such a twerp wouldn't be a good mage, but dangerous. She had known twerps who could do a lot of damage with magic. She slid smoothly in behind him and noted that Raoul was coming in just as silently on the twerp's other side. They nodded at each other and stepped out. Raoul pounced on the magician, and Crystal grabbed his staff, easily pulling it out of his grip. The young mage squawked and thrashed ineffectively. After a moment, he seemed to remember his art and said, "I am a mage! I can turn you into toads if you don't let me go AT ONCE!" "Turning people into toads isn't easy," Raoul said, "and with the Arcanum so depleted, I don't think you can do it. I'm willing to take that chance, anyway." "And as a knight in direct service to His Majesty the King of Andoria," Crystal added, "I command you to tell us your name and your purpose in being here." "The king won't matter once Lord Hermes has taken hold!" the twerp answered. He spoke with an air of bravado that rang false on Crystal's ear. She could see Raoul's fingers tightening where he held the magician by the back of the neck. She shared his outrage, but they needed information. "That may or may not happen," she said coldly, "but you won't be alive to see it." The young mage rolled his eyes, white-rimmed with fear, and made a wordless whinnying sound. He pried at Raoul's fingers, to no effect. Crystal raised an eyebrow. "Oh, you have something to say?" She nodded at Raoul. "Let him talk." Raoul shook him a little. "It's your life on the line," he growled, "so make it good." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 267): INOCHI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Biff! Pow! ARUAK CITY watched with glee as LETHAL HERITAGE got knocked off top spot by WHEN DOGMA FAILS II! Hmmmph! I always thought MANIC MARVELS was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 1-1-0! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, SCARLET KNIGHTS II's 3rd moved them up to 3-1-0 place. It seems so recently people were saying WHEN DOGMA FAILS II was washed up, finished. But 4-1-0 moved them up 4. I guess they're washed no more... What's with DAMNUALL? He actually beat COLORIFIC's BLACK PLAGUE, and walked away with 22 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at WHEN DOGMA FAILS II while they watched DAMNUALL clobber BLACK PLAGUE. She lost 20 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. I'm sure ARUAK CITY is excited about ONEWOLF, the new Duelmaster from WOLFBROTHERS. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I have... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was WHEN DOGMA FAILS II. The bums at ANIMAL FARM couldn't face the challenges from WHEN DOGMA FAILS II! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, JON FLEET! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that ONEWOLF gets in. He fights people like KILL STEELE, 12 points below. I thought ONEWOLF showed great skill and promise when he overcame KILL STEELE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. I am standing now and applauding you, sir! Oh man, that was good! -- Tripwire, a proud Delarquan non- avoider! All -- HAL must have eaten my ads last turn as well (T535). Here they go again! -- Lord Xiang Lethal Heritage bids Welcome to Scarlet Knights II, Club Hammer, and Earthbound. -- Lord Xiang Barnabas -- Your words ring with truth. I only wish to break even against that conglomerate, nothing more. But I'll settle for the odd win every so often. *chuckle* -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- I wish to make one comment, and only one, about your comments to my friend and ally, JGW, as it directly affects me. That comment addresses your first point made, about pride in Mordant. I, Sir, am proud to be from Mordant myself. It is the cradle of modern dueling, without which you would not be here, in this city, selling toothpaste advertisements on your warriors' shields! Mordant has a great history of generating Tournament Victors and Champions, and has recently returned to such heights with Victors in the most recent tourneys. I do not see you fighting in Mordant, so therefore, you are in no position of any kind to denigrate that fine city! After you have spent enough time in that city, learning all it has to offer, will you be able to comment about the pride of its citizens, and it will all be in a positive light! I have come to your excellent city, willing try a new culture. Will you step forward and show the same respect I have shown Aruak City? Or will you allow a mere Delarquan to prove more civilized and cosmopolitan than one of Andoria's finest? -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- Hehe, aye, my record is trashed, no thanks to your friends, Kennelworth, PPE, and Mino. I will say that I am not a Lord of the DA, as that is more Seraphim's title. I have five workable warriors, not a godling in the lot, mind you, but workable. The only thing I don't like is tourney timing, as it will keep me with only two active warriors just before the tourney. -- Lord Xiang Lord Protector Kalidor -- I am sure that any of my warriors would love to get a challenge from you. I have plenty in range, just let me know who, and I can arrange them to be active and we can challenge each other. -- Lord Xiang Jon Fleet -- My friend, I hope your manager takes pity on you, and releases you from your obligations to the team. Not only have you been vanquished by a warrior with less than a quarter of your fights, but you are not the best of teachers, either. -- Patton Da Heretic -- Two short, vicious minutes. You'd survive in Mordant, I think. -- Rommel Bull Horn -- Not only do I avenge my fallen teammate, but you teach well! I think I shall test your mettle for a third time. -- Ghengis Geeamos -- Thanks for the skills! You can have the victory in trade. I'll get it back later, I'm sure. -- Pee-Wee Herman All -- Now for this installment of ads (T536). -- Lord Xiang Treestump -- Holy COW!! How did I survive that challenge? Never mind WIN! -- Patton Jon Fleet -- I can only echo Patton's words, my friend. -- Rommel Bull Horn -- I thank your manager for granting this last round, as we both learned well. You are an honorable warrior. Honor is satisfied. -- Ghengis Two-Spear -- Nice learns for us both. I am sure that you will win against me in the fullness of time. -- Pee-Wee Herman All -- 4-0!! Top Team, and Team on the Move to boot! Not to mention back over 50%. Took me 10 turns to get to the top, Kennelworth, that is 'soon' enough for me! *grin* -- Lord Xiang Doc Steele -- It is a good thing that a manager of your caliber takes time to consider, and contribute, to the health of the arena that you are in. You, along with everyone else here, help make this arena worth staying involved in. I look forward to reading your posts when time allows you to pen your thoughts. -- Lord Xiang Lethal Heritage bids welcome to Maniacal Tufts. -- Lord Xiang Kennelworth -- I am glad to hear Fandil the Wise is back on the job! This seems to be a rebirth of The Consortium. -- Lord Xiang Jon Fleet -- Or, to scramble the name some more, Tap Not. -- Patton Congratulations to Lethal Heritage! Nice three turn record. Great last turn point gain. You guys are good! -- Kennelworth No Duelmaster? Perhaps Onewolf was paying too much attention to the "pretend health, humility, honor" and not enough to the fight with Big Lou? Big Lou, you won the title on your way to The Big Time, so please come on over and drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Scarlet Knights -- We were sorry to see the demise of Gladius, a great warrior. May he fight well in that great arena in the sky. -- Kennelworth Genghis -- You rascal! I was prepared for you, but you fought well! Now back to the real world. -- Bull Horn The Singing Bandit -- How times change! A salute to you. Woe is me! -- The bucking unlucky bucking Brahma Red Tape -- But that was my challenge? I was supposed to, well, uh, you know. What sign are you? -- Aries Dayle Glassjaw -- I guess I wasn't as advertised. -- Bull Et Proof Leeta? Thank you for taking care of me. -- Man's Best friend Mino -- Old friend, nice turn. Perhaps you want to come and manage these Bulldogs for a while? -- Kennelworth Well, Scarlet Knights, I guess Gladius Starstryke was not inoculated. -- Black Plague, Proud Colorific Neverwake -- Caught you in your own white lie, huh? It was a pleasure whooping you, but it would probably have been more fun if it were the REAL Neverwake. -- White Lie, Proud Colorific Domingo -- Lucky, lucky, lucky. -- Blue Eyes, Proud Colorific 2-1-1! On the way up, up, up. Colorifics are surely glad I am back. -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager M. Chardinee? Finally I am given an opponent I am supposed to beat. -- Pink Puma Flying Nun -- Hmmmmm. But a step in the road towards a great vacation. -- Magenta Maggot Burn Da Witch -- I couldn't let that happen, could I? You fought like a tiger and clearly deserved that win. Salute. -- Turquoise Tiger Windchaser -- All that experience worried me, but.... -- Violet Vulture P.S. What was that you were saying about clouds? Shiver me timbers! Me critters done got it a goin'. Aye! -- Mino Violet Vulture -- A purple predator is what you are. Gah. Peck, peck, peck, and when you get an opening, rip, tear. Ouch. Couldn't I offer you some roadkill or something? -- Windchaser Damnuall -- I have always felt that several days' bedrest was better than dogma. Especially if there are pretty nurses. Just don't let those butchers tell you that a blow to the neck (pure accident, I assure you) means you should have your head amputated! -- Jo Mooncatcher Haunt -- Somehow, I don't find that outcome the least bit surprising. Just, as my record shows, the story of my arena life. -- Koro Cloud P.S. I'm really good with horses. I think Leeta's making a mistake insisting that I do gladiating too. Kill Steele -- (pout) You could have TAUGHT me something, you toad! -- Rockie Dee P.S. With garlic on it! Rommel -- Those tanks were dirty pool, guy. -- Jon Fleet Mino -- Hal's been eating a lot of stuff lately, and I DON'T LIKE IT. You're in the best company, and I'm tempted to say, forget the Commission, forget the fights, let's just put together a newsletter on our own! Ed. could do it. -- Leeta the really, really annoyed I could, but I can't say the thought gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. -- Ed. Violet Vulture -- A purple pincushion? But that was last time. This time... (shudder) -- Windchaser Kennelworth -- Yep, I figure Fandil has abilities as yet undiscovered, but sure to surface at need.... -- the Scribe 22 February 2006 The Olympics have arrived! The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a 'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be posted.
