The two men took a final look around at the landscape sunk in twilight. And
stiffened at a wink of light to the north. Without comment, Rughal pulled out the
spyglass they had found in one of the saddlebags. He looked and then passed the
glass to Ashon Chang. What appeared to the unaided eye as a single twinkling light
below the horizon was a cluster of such lights when seen through the glass.
"Campfires?" the samurai asked. "I see...I can't count them all."
"Campfires," Rughal agreed. "I can't count them, either, but at the least they
must represent three, maybe four hundred men."
"They seem too far away to be following us."
"They aren't. Can't be. They're well to the north of our trail." He paused,
silent for several seconds. "The hills are lower there, maybe a pass, even a road."
Another pause. "I thought I saw dust north of us in the afternoon...."
"You didn't say anything."
"I wasn't sure, and nobody else mentioned seeing it. I could have been wrong."
"You think they're taking a course parallel to ours? Who and why, though?"
Before the ranger could give the obvious answer, that he didn't know, Ashon Chang cut
him off with a gesture. "Speculate."
Rughal shrugged, the motion half-guessed-at in the darkness, and turned to go
back down the path to the lakeside. "A large raiding party or small army headed west
from the river to...some goal we don't know. There may be some small city or trade
route out there, or they might be headed for the swamp, as we are. Probably elves,
although there could be large movements of the human nomads, what on Ghea are the
Rirorni. Not as likely...I think. But whoever is there is almost certain to be an
enemy to us."
"We'll have to tell the others about the fires and talk over possible plans,"
Ashon Chang said. "They all have a stake in this mess."
The crocs had been a surprise. A pleasant one, which Ashon Chang took as a good
sign. When Rughal had explained what he knew or guessed about the situation, and
what he proposed, the crocs had made a counter proposal: If the humans would help
them find some of their people, help defend against the possible army of elves if it
came to that, they would in turn do what they could to help rescue Shania.
It wasn't much of a plan, but at least it gave some focus to their actions, and
the samurai decided he could live with that. For now. Glancing forward along their
line to where Rughal was investigating a side valley, Ashon Chang decided he could
live with it very well. Even so tenuous a purpose as they now pursued had bled off
some of the ranger's dangerous tension.

The mage leading Shania's captors set a fast pace. She thought he was risking
the health of his horses by it, riding them too hard when they were already tired.
But it told her why he hadn't been interested in hearing about her horse, the one she
had looted from the earlier group. To the mage, horses were just transportation,
probably just primitive transportation, and he had no concept of them as individual
creatures that could be recognized. They were heading northeast, as she had guessed,
which meant they would miss her companions. That was good. But the mage, who was in
the lead, was drawing a straight line across the land and riding them down it without
regard for the difficulty of the terrain. This elf deserved to be tricked. And she
would trick him every way she could.

Murska:
Huw hooked an arm around the chimney stack and stretched the other one down
toward Tankesh.
The elf twisted as he hit the roof and caught Huw's hand in a strong grip, then
climbed upward until he could reach the chimney anchorage for himself. "Fancy
meeting you here!" he gasped. "Good thing, too." He spent a few moments gulping in
air, which was not as cool as he would have liked, but it was what he had. A quick
glance around, hampered by fire and smoke, told him that he was back in Murska. What
part of Murska, other than not-the-arena, he didn't know. "What are we doing here?"
he asked.
"This is the mages' quarter," Huw said. "I was trying to find someone who could
send me after you. Glad I didn't have to! Now what?"
"Still need a mage," Tankesh answered. "The Black Kaliv is causing this." He
stopped to cough as the wind shifted and blew smoke over their position. "We have to
stop HIM."
"There's monsters and maybe real demons here."
"And if we kill them or drive them off, the kaliv can just summon more. We have
to stop HIM."
"Good point." Huw looked across the area. The fires were multiplying and
escalating. They could still--with luck--retreat from this roof, but they couldn't
go forward. "I don't think we'll find one here, though."
"Not now," Tankesh agreed. He squinted into the billowing smoke. "The next
closest place is probably Zensu."
Huw hesitated, staring into the burning town. Then he shook himself like a dog
coming out of water. "Right. There isn't much I can do here, nothing that someone
else couldn't do just as well. We need a magician to stop this invasion." He was
speaking quietly, more to himself than his companion. He shook himself again.
"Zensu," he said. "I'm with you on that. Let's go."

SPY REPORT
Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in ARUAK
CITY. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! Say
good-bye to WHEN DOGMA FAILS II, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by
the JGW EXPIRATION stable. Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I
admit it's corny) is COLORIFIC, who swept up 13 places in the ranks. It was a tough
week for LETHAL HERITAGE, to drop 6 places in the rankings. ANIMAL FARM is no joke
as it posted a 4-0-0 week advancing from 7th place to 2nd place. Call it luck at the
right time or bribes in the right hands, but the new team GORMEN GHAST scored a 3-2-0
record this week. Hey everybody, watch out for MAGENTA MAGGOT, who flew up 21 points
in the rankings after mashing PATTON like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. Ya
know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. PATTON lost to MAGENTA
MAGGOT and drops 18 points. Well, if ya don't shows up at the laundromat, ya can'ts
wash yer clothes. ONEWOLF did not fight this week so his title was forfeit. It's a
proud day for the KRILL CAVALRY stable, as their warrior, JO MOONCATCHER, ascended
the Duelmaster's throne. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and
avoid aiming at that location.
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid WHEN DOGMA FAILS II, please raise you
hand. Wow. Does ARUAK CITY really have that many liars? For those of you who like
math, try this one: WHEN DOGMA FAILS II + Weapons That go Boom = ANIMAL FARM + Avoid
City. Well just about everybody wants a piece of ROCKIE DEE, who was this week's
most challenged warrior.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally
in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in
next week's fights. Its been real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been real
fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Walk The Line -- You were too much for me. I couldn't keep it on the straight and
narrow. I was also probably full of bull. -- Aries
Leetah -- I guess I am not as good as I thought, huh? I think I understand, now, why
Kennelworth preaches humility. -- Bull Et Proof
Lord Xiang -- The Consortium makes a habit out of not letting others break even with
them. Indeed, and I am one of those in the weak standing to that end. And I hear
you have some reasonable warriors, not godlings, on your team? What's a godling? --
Kennelworth
The Singing Bandit -- Turn around is fair play. Life is but a crapshoot, isn't it?
-- Bucking Brahma (quite the bucker last round)
"All -- 4-0!! Top Team, and Team on the Move to boot! Not to mention back over 50%.
Took me 10 turns to get to the top, Kennelworth, that is "soon" enough for me!" And
a salute to you, Lord Xiang, for the mighty effort and accomplishment. Health.
Humility. Honor. -- Kennelworth
Dangerous Criminal? Is that like a meek Delarquan? (chuckle) Whatever it was, my
horn was better than his horn. -- Bull Horn
Ambitious Guard -- Consider yourself henpecked. -- Violet Vulture
Windchaser -- I am, indeed, quite the pecker. There aren't enough good peckers in
the world. My roomy says I henpeck him too. I wonder what he means? What else
would one expect of a vulture? -- Ms. Violet Vulture
Jon Fleet -- May you grow both old and warts! -- Tangerine Toad
Red Tape -- We put on a marathon plus, didn't we? Thanks for the fun. -- Turquoise
Tiger
Rommel -- What?! Man, I thought I could win that one! A salute to you and your
manager. -- Magenta Maggot
After yon Mailer, me critters bea goin' fer yer thousun'. Aye. Inna bloody fine
hurry. Aye. -- Mino
No comment! -- Purple People Eater, Once Proud Colorific Manager
J.G. Wellington and LocoInArizona -- ONE WORD. -- The Consortium Elders
Bull Horn -- Aye, a return to the real world. You fought well yourself. As for
being a rascal? But of course!! -- Ghengis
Scarlet Knights -- The Consortium will take the bloodfeud in full, if that is your
aim, my friend. -- Lord Xiang, mgr. Lethal Heritage and fellow victim of those
Consortiumites
PPE -- Tsk, tsk, tsk. Rack up ANOTHER kill for The Consortium! -- Lord Xiang
P.S. Are you SURE that Consortium stables aren't Delarquan? *grin*
Jon Fleet -- *shrug* Seemed like the thing to do! When the Commission said we could
use armor, I just assumed panzers were authorized.... -- Rommel
Treestump -- Yep, you stumped me all right!! -- Patton
Magenta Maggot -- Didn't like me turning on the lights, now, did you? -- Rommel
Lord Kronos -- All I asked for was for more time! -- Ghengis
Richard Hendrix -- I only have one thing to say to you. NYAHHHHH!!!! I MEANT to do
that!!! -- Pee-wee Herman
Bull Horn -- I see you savagely defeated Dangerous Criminal. Kennelworth make you
start over at the bottom because you lost to me? -- Ghengis
Kennelworth -- My, my, my. I was perusing the Commission postings, and noticed that
Consortium teams seem to have a bloodthirsty nature elsewhere, as well. Mary
Catherine scored her second kill in three turns in Ardivent. *grin* Are you SURE
your organization would not fit in if The Consortium were to pay a visit to Mordant?
The taverns there provide free drinks to those that score that coveted 'kill.' --
Lord Xiang
<Looking over ads from the last arena cycle...> It would be interesting to see what
would happen in this arena if we started killing these Delarquans who showed up.
This Tripwire, Xiang, JWG, etc. They might mistake us for Andorians and start a bit
of...chaos. <a smirk> -- Zyn-kyr
We would draw too much attention to our other activities. Let it be. If you happen
to kill somebody, so be it, just don't prejudice against the so-called Andorians. Be
equal in your killings. And say nothing to Kronos, we need him to avoid fulfilling
his bloodlust. You don't want to fill the heads of vampiric demons with such ideas.
-- Fiona
Lord Xiang -- You might rue the day you welcomed US...to the arena. <coy smile with a
sensuous lick of her lip> -- Fiona Starmantle <green eyed elf with black hair and
strands of silver woven in. Seductive.>
Ghengis -- Tasty... <licks the blood off his axe and a wild light gleams in his
eyes>. -- Lord Kronos
Haunt -- Just here for a few wins! Isn't that -- Special!
Domingo -- I like stupid men, but not THAT stupid. -- Fiona
Geeamos -- Rrrr.... -- Zyn'kyr
Lord Xiang -- Tankesh is busy out of town, so we apologize for his lack of response.
However, I have a few words from Home Guard...Bring it on. -- Kalidor
Tangerine Toad -- Very colorful, but with such an electric shade, you should be
hopping all over the place. (I enjoy watching you jiggle when you hop.) -- Jon Fleet
P.S. Is it just your armor that color, or does the shade go deeper?
Burn Da Witch -- Do you find this works? -- Windchaser
Chester -- Earthbound indeed. -- Koro Cloud
Bootstrap Ribeye -- I had a steak the other day that made me think of you. Like
leather it was. Just a passing image, though. On a more direct note, that was quite
a match, was it not? -- Jo Mooncatcher
Yellow Streak -- It's a style thing with you, isn't it? -- Rockie Dee
Patton -- (shrug) That's life. -- Jon Fleet
Man's Best Friend -- What? You lost me on that one. It's true that I oversee Spot,
who manages the Red Dog Gang in Aradi, but that isn't what you were referring to, is
it? -- Leeta
Adie and Company in Spots -- Don't know if or how much I'll get into this newsletter.
I had the BEST intentions, but it's just been one darned thing after another. -- the

A few notes about e-mailed personals:
You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.
