Here is what a typical Andorian (Tankesh, in this case) says, and what a typical Delarquan (myself, in this case) hears. We will take a recent personal ad posted, and dissect it for your edification. (Note: this is for fun, I make no intentional efforts to make any of this personal.) Lord Xiang -- You know, I have lots of respect for you as a person... meaning: You 'Larqs get touchy if you don't feel respected...and are prone to do something dangerous if you feel slighted ...but coming from a 'Larq arena and then playing 'honorably' here is well...okay, let me put it this way. meaning: I'll try to use one or two syllable words, since you can only speak in grunts. If I had the resources to send a team to Mordant, and I did, and I was to play by 'Larq rules there and 'Larq style, I would be lowering my ethical standards. meaning: I'd get whooped badly if I sent my wimps to Mordant. Wait, hear me out. meaning: Please! I need to get this off my chest. It has been bothering me a lot lately, and I need some caring individual to let me talk to them about it before my feelings get hurt. I demand of my warriors that they try not to kill people. meaning: We have mandatory weapons maintenance scheduled to dull our weapons' edges and use leather padding on our blunt weapons. It doesn't work that way in 'Larq society. meaning: You guys really are NUTS!! Playing with sharp pointy objects like that! Now, granted, I would downchallenge, which is morally/honorably acceptable in that culture.... meaning: Once out of sight of Andorian nationals, I would get to do what I've wanted to do all along!! (like I will in Home Guard, where it is acceptable, if somebody pisses me off), meaning: Who cares in ADM? It's only Basic where we can lose somebody to death. but I could never bring my team to kill on purpose. meaning: I just close my eyes, and pray that there are accidents that I can 'apologize' for. I like to see that kill stat increase, just like everyone else! Can you say you've lowered your ethics by telling your warriors here in Aruak not to kill? -- Tankesh meaning: Gee, you're being a better Andorian than I am here. I'm impressed!! P.S. In any case, I would love to try smacking you around in your home arena. meaning: Unfortunately, with my wimps, I could only 'try' to smack you around in Mordant. I'd rather stay here in Aruak City where I have an established team and feel loved. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * A LOSS AND A PROMISE Aruak City: The summer thunderstorms had passed the day before and a stiff cold wind had blown in over the clanholds from the north, filling the low pressure left in the wake of the hot air. Now it was a breezy cool day with a warm bright sun. A beautiful day for a walk, but not one on which to dress lightly, spring had not quite passed. Lord Xiang was dressed appropriately in one of his long mandarin gowns. Even a culturally ignorant Aruaki however could not mistake it for a woman's dress. Long and simple with two wide sleeves, it was a brilliant red silk with a black waist 'belt', really a strip of elegant cloth wrapped around his waist. The gown was woven with gold silk, trimming the fringes as well as embroidered in patterns of eastern dragons winding their way around his body. The gown was slit down the center for ease of movement. In keeping with the eastern style he wore silk two toe slip socks and strongly carved wooden sandals. In his hand was his personal correspondence for the day. It was his usual attire when he went to the Bulldog Inn; looking smooth in social gatherings was a must. He enjoyed the company at the Inn; amicable, often sharp witted, mostly respectful (sometimes Tankesh was a bit too brusque), but it was more often than not particularly competitive in tone. Lord Xiang smiled at the thought and stroked one end of his chest length fu manchu. *** ** ***** ** *** The Bulldog Inn: Sipping a small cup of oolong tea in his favorite ceramic tea glass (Adie was amazing at getting her hands on exotic drinks), Lord Xiang scrolled through his teams' activities around Alastari. The Bulldog was quiet today...it was fight day. Everybody was at the arena. Well, almost. Kennelworth wiped down the counter in front of his manager compatriot. "How go things outside of Aruak?" the ol' barkeep inquired. "You are participating in TOGS and the Mordant Olympics, correct?" "We will learn soon enough...." replied the Delarquan Master, softly setting down his cup. Apparently, Adie had a small hand in the affairs of her teams, letting Tankesh handle most of the operations, because she just passed by Lord Xiang on her way to the kitchen rather than herself being at the arena. She caught his eye, smiled, and commented as she passed, "A beautiful gown, Lord." Lord Xiang grinned. But whether he was smiling at the compliment, or at some other thought as he watched Adeolar walk into the kitchen, was hard to tell. Perhaps both. She usually wore a long white summer dress trimmed in gold these days, and it was slit down the sides. She walked with confidence, and in a dress like that he saw she had legs worth showing. Lord Xiang knew better than that however. Having become more acquainted with Adie since she had been in town, he learned she was a very modest person, which meant the dress was meant for ease of movement...just like his gown. There was more to her than met the eye. That was something to learn another day, but for the moment he enjoyed the eye candy. Lord Xiang had made many friends in Aruak City since he arrived, despite being a native of Mordant. There was always some tension, but it was good natured and he was respected. Perhaps not always for his warriors' performances, which was improving, but always in person. He enjoyed the friendship...and the trust. Mordant was a ruthless place, but here he knew his new friends, although stiff competitors, would never stab him in the back. In Mordant he had true friends and allies to counter that, but here, although his allies had come to Aruak as well, he did not necessarily need them.... Pushing that thought out of his mind, he sighed, and thought to himself, "You must be getting old falling for these soft Andorians...." Letting out a long breath, Lord Xiang shook his head ever so slightly. His financial situation was looking grim for the moment, and he just learned he had had a 0-5 showing in his hometown for the Mordant Olympics. They needed help, and he wasn't there. TOGS would put pressure on him too. Dwelling on this for some time, sipping his tea, he came to a hard decision. Kennelworth saw the wall of blank expression on the Lord's face during this time, and he was wise enough to know something was wrong, but he did not say anything. Kennelworth was nosy in a good way, but he was never one to intrude. But he had a way of drawing out people. He stopped wiping the counter directly in front of Lord Xiang, pausing to look at his friend as if to say 'well, what is the matter?'. Xiang looked at the Consortium elder. "I have to shut my team and leave Aruak City." Kennelworth looked totally bummed! Lord Xiang was one of the best things to happen to Aruak City in a long time. He was a strong voice in the city, and now it would be gone. But the Consortium was not so keen on losing a companion and great competitor. Kennelworth pressed him then and there. "You are going to return, aren't you? It would be such a statement if one day, one of your warriors, a Delarquan managed by you, had their photo hanging on that wall in the Heart and Soul of Andoria." He pointed across the bar to the Hall of Fame. Lord Xiang knew what the ol' bar keep was pointing at without even looking. Flinging his long, braided tail of hair over his shoulder, he snickered at the thought, and told Kennelworth what he wanted to hear.... "You can count on it." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 270): INOCHI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) The celebrations, the disappointments... Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave LETHAL HERITAGE a 0-0-0! I got a good laugh out of it! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, SCARLET KNIGHTS II's 13th moved them up to 2-0-0 place. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well GERFEL'S FRIENDS moved up 6, to 3rd. What's with THE SINGING BANDIT? He actually beat ANIMAL FARM's VIOLET VULTURE, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight. BLACK PLAGUE was reminded on the sands why BIONIC BUFFALO is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. No matter the time or place, men will always duel. ARUAK CITY thinks PLATEMAIL POLITICS and their 30-34-2 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... In my day, no team with a 29-32-2 would scare me off! What's the problem, JGW EXPIRATION? What do people see in TANGERINE TOAD? Hers 10-3-0? ANIMAL FARM ain't talkin', but she's got 59 points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that NATAS gets in. He fights people like JON FLEET, 9 points below. I thought NATAS showed great skill and promise when he was beat by JON FLEET. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Warriors of ARUAK CITY unite. You have only your games to lose! Someone told FIONA STARMANTLE that COLORIFIC never Bloodfeuded, that she'd have an easy kill. Well, I'm sure whoever misled you is right sorry. AIRK ARCSTONE larned his lesson (RED TAPE taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any PLATEMAIL POLITICS members with the same gusto. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Lord Xiang -- We shall miss you. Return soon and travel well. -- Kennelworth Lon Braddock -- Aha! Immortal wins are always difficult for us Bulldogs. I was glad to contribute this one to the boss. -- Man's Best Friend Hurt -- I am glad that was all it was. There is too much killing going on around Aruak City as of late. -- Aries Superbeast -- I salute your talent. You are my better. Good luck in The Big Time. -- Bull Horn Tankesh -- "Spank then Consortium scum...."? Whatever do you mean? -- Kennelworth JGW -- Congrats and well done on your continued fine record. -- Kennelworth and The Bulldogs Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- Now will you think maggots are cool? -- Magenta Maggot That Aruak Guy -- We dromedaries can go a long, long way, without water, but that was pushing it. -- Carmel Camel The Red Tape -- I am impressed. Few can say they have done that. Salute. -- Tangerine Toad Blimey! Sailin' fer yon thousan' next. Aye! -- Mino Sacred Wars Smurf -- Thanks for the challenge. I needed that. -- Turquoise Tiger Treestump -- You gave it everything you had and I salute you for it. -- Violet Vulture Tankesh -- Dammee! Spank, eh? Bloody spank me some tiny tank 'n make the blimey whelp walk yon plank. Aye. -- Mino Jon Fleet -- I don't want to talk about it! I'm dead! Hah! -- Blue Eyes, Once Proud Colorific Fiona Starmantle -- You are on my sxxx list, you killer of color! -- Purple People Eater, proud Colorific Manager Elinae Silverbow -- OK. That was it. -- Silver Lining, Proud Colorific A Veteran Merc a day, makes this a simple trade to play. Gotta love it! Bionic Buffalo -- I WANT YOU! -- Black Plague, Proud Colorific From T542... White Lie -- The time and place I come from, you would be a paragon of virtue. Unfortunately, where I come from, virtues were the first casualties. -- Rommel Yellow Streak -- I meant to do that! *eh-eh!* -- Pee-Wee Herman Tangerine Toad -- Hey! I got back into the fight after my disgrace! It's what I'm good at. Why put up with my antics at HQ...make the enemy put up with my antics in the field!! -- Patton Violet Vulture -- A warrior wins, and a warrior loses. There is no dishonor in losing, but it is HOW one loses that earns honor or dishonor. Why, I remember during the Carthage Campaign.... -- Patton Jeb (or his replacement, I guess) -- JGW is having a grand ole time dominating the arena currently. If he maintains his record after a hundred fights, then I would say he is the dominant force in the arena. The only way you can disprove my observation is to knock him down. I don't see that happening any time soon, however. *grin* -- Lord Xiang JGW -- Touche! Same here. However, I am losing warriors left and right here, so maybe they are trying to knock US off. -- Lord Xiang the Scribe -- Who authorized a vacation? I sure didn't. Must have been Adie. She's got a soft spot for her writers. *chuckle* -- Lord Xiang T543... Kennelworth -- Aye, the Olympics are doing pretty well, however, I must confess that Amicitia Primoris has had a much better showing here in Aruak City than in our own home arena recently. *sigh* -- Lord Xiang Elinae -- *eh-eh* Yep!! I do!! -- Pee-Wee Herman Tankesh -- *grin* You'd have to ask JGW who he's whoopin' up on. I'm just happy sticking at the middle of the pack. As for being a hero? Yeah, that kind of gets, um, dangerous. Take a break, find out what's been going on in your guildhouse while you were gone. You know, have some fun!! -- Lord Xiang Tankesh -- I have never intentionally sought to kill my opponents (outside of a declared conflict) in the arena. I just don't get all riled up about death as do certain individuals. I won't downchallenge, unless circumstances warrant it, either. If somebody DCs me, I'll return the favor. If somebody kills my warrior, I'll BF instead of gripe. I'll grant I worked the personals for all it was worth when I had a warrior die at the hands of one of Kennelworth's warriors. That was pure propaganda from my perspective (even Kennelworth enjoyed the banter!!). If you have the resources to send a team to Mordant, run it as you see fit. We won't complain. If you win using our rules, we salute you! If you maintain your own ethical standards, and still win, would that not be the best vindication of your managerial style? Do I consider my standards lowered by changing my style here in Aruak City? I feel that I have lost some fights that I should have won, had I been aiming vitals. Granted I might have one or two kills scored by now, but even the Tuft Tuggers have 21 kills recorded. Consortium teams have a combined 69 kills credited to their three teams. JGW will be chartered here next turn, and I find it amusing that we more vocal Delarquans have a goose-egg in the kill column, and the two more vocal Andorians have almost 100 between them. Granted, the longevity of the teams have a significant effect on that particular statistic, but, as Andorians are prone to say *grin* it's the principle of the concept. -- Lord Xiang P.S. I'll use the Translator on the ad I am responding to. *chuckle* Windchaser -- Which reputation would that be? As a warrior? Or as a primadona? -- Patton Mino & Animal Farm -- Congrats on 1,000 victories! Well done! It was a good challenge to face you in Seam many years ago. A salute to that royal rug! My Stormguards are looking to hit that mark too someday, but in a slow arena, of course. We'll buy 10 kegs for your celebration! -- The Icelord, 1st Mage, The Council of Lords Congratulations to...Bionic Buffalo? What's that, like powered armor or something? Reminds me of Flinglebits...anyway. Congratulations to our Duelmaster and Lord Protector. -- Tankesh Silver Lining -- My @$$!! There's no silver lining in what you did! I hope your defeat is one of many for being so careless. -- Elinae Silverbow Kennelworth & Mino -- Thank you. We returned recently and only just learned of our loss. Jeb truly was a great person, he will be missed. It is a shame Greywand has a monopoly on Ahringol's allowance of resurrection. He was truly unique. Perhaps he will return some day.... -- Adie PPE -- That was just a warm up in my new quest to spank you and your team for what Silver Lining did to Jeb! Your mouth wasn't enough, now you'll get more than a verbal smack down! -- Tankesh Kennelworth -- Aradi? Aradi! You ARE getting up there in years my old friend to forget that it is the ARUAK Wall of Fame hanging in the Bulldog Inn of ARUAK City. <smiling and shaking her head a bit incredulously> -- Adie Dartor -- It is great to have you back. You have come and gone in the last few years, but we hope you stay. What are your goals with the Immortals now that you have finished with your Living Dead? -- Adie Two-Sopear -- Great fight. -- Kiri Seraphim -- Airk has been reprimanded for going too far and killing Embargo. You have our utmost condolences. We can assure you there was no intent to do such a dreadful thing, alas, he is a bit clumsy and his aim is poor. Again, our sincerest apologies. -- Adie for Airk and Tuft Tuggers Turpentine Elf -- I had nothing but varnish, and you took it all off. Salute to you. -- Kaelen Hey everybody... <glancing around> where is Lord Xiang? -- Tankesh PPE -- Grotesque beast, you have but one shot at attempting to revenge your bloodfeud. My associates and I must...shall we say, retire from arena life temporarily. Really, I don't quite understand how I could ever kill somebody with something as crude as a sword, I was not even hitting where I was aiming. But it was so easy. Despite the repugnance, I had a sense of fulfillment when Blue Eyes fell at my feet. There's just something about you I find very...annoying. Regardless, I will not be avoiding you, but do not bet I have no other...<grin> cards up my sleeve. -- Fiona Rockie Dee -- There is so little taste to be found on my blade...<frustrated> -- Kronos Geeamos -- It was inevitable. -- Special! Blue Eyes -- Norm endurance, great damage, 11-3-17-17-21-4-11 striker. A Proud Dead Colorific. XXXXX! -- Purple People Eater, proud Colorific Manager Kennelworth -- Try not to confuse Aruak City with Aradi. I'd rather not have my TCs credited to that city! It is safe to say I speak for my alliance-mates in this matter. -- Generalissimo Puerco Kennelworth -- Seeing all our TCs' names together in your ad makes me think we should set up an exhibition tournament between them, to be held here. It would be a nice way to give something back to the wonderful arena community here in Aruak City. Perhaps the Bulldog could sponsor it. Let's have Adie organize it! -- Generalissimo Puerco Adie -- RIP Jeb. So sad... -- Generalissimo Puerco Dartor -- Congrats on closing the Living Dead. Did those graduates help you move toward completing your life-list? -- Generalissimo Puerco This is just to fill a request. It is not bragging, but a stating of who my team has fought and the record against each team. I will list my Delarquan Mates and the record against them first, then followed by 'other' to identify those teams who I do not know their allegiances, but as far as I'm concerned they are Andorian unless stated otherwise; Records stated in win-loss-kill-death format. I hope to change those trends soon, and I hope to maintain the other win/loss percentages as turns go on. This is not a sprint for me; it's a marathon. Time can change these numbers for the better or for the worse. In any matter it's refreshing to be beating on the 'Andorian scum' of the arena <laughs maniacally>. Honestly, if some of you are not Andorian, but visiting this jewel of Andoria, let me know. I am willing to note your affiliation and adjust my attitude accordingly. Tankesh, I haven't faced your teams, but I have taken care of Adeloar's teams to a satisfactory margin. Of course, Special has a lot to say about the 50% record against Maniacal Tufts. But a funny thing "Tank boy" is I don't have a woman running any stables associated with my name. Or do you work for her? A man, working for a woman! <cackles> -- Joseph G Wellington Bionic Buffalo -- I dunno if that bionic stuff should be allowed, but Leeta tells me it's just golem things and I gotta live with it. Or die with it, as the case may be. At least this time, no dying. So far. Nearly, but no, as they say seegar. -- Jon Fleet Lord Kronos -- Well, heck, you didn't need to do that! I already KNEW I didn't like hospitals. Blood all over the place, and people screaming. Not my scene. -- Rockie Dee P.S. Leeta says your manager might want to try _Sunshine_ by Robin McKinley. I don't know why. *I* didn't like it. Too much blood there, too. It's...everywhere! Gods. Richard Hendrix -- Have I mentioned lately that people like you fill me with a strange desire to take a nap? Well, nothing strange about taking a nap, I guess, good things, naps, cats do 'em all the time, but NOT in the arena. Urg. -- Windchaser Jean Felix -- You did laugh. I could hear you. -- Koro Cloud P.S. Yeah, well, I guess you earned it. Bummer. Ghost of Blue Eyes -- An undefeated record is a curse waiting to happen. I did you a favor. Just, alas, too late. -- Jon Fleet Bionic Buffalo -- Ah. We see that you're about to be out of here. Congratulations and good riddance. 26 May 2006 The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire want to announce the joining of a new member who cherishes the same ideals, respect and loyalty that we hold dear. From this day forward let all know that Blackstorm is now a Dark Knight of the Desolate Empire Alliance. With him as our chosen brother, our alliance only becomes stronger. Let all his foes become ours, and ours his. May all our enemies' blood flow freely and give NO quarter in war. This is also a warning to any cowards, bullies, etc.... If you play with fire, you WILL get burnt!!! Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire 6 June 2006 To those involved, no, I have not abandoned your stories. But I've been letting them drift, and that has to stop, so I am taking the time to make sure that I know where they are going, more than just "what happens next" dreamed up on the fly, before resuming work on them. No new stories will be started until at least one of the old ones has concluded, for the same reason: quantity can't substitute for quality. Your patience in this matter is appreciated. -- the Scribe 20 May 2006 Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire Our newest Dark Knight disrespected?!?!?! ARE THEY SERIOUS?!?!
